Quotes of The Day

Quote I

I never think of the future - it comes soon enough. Albert Einstein

Quote II

When in doubt, don't.Benjamin Franklin

Quote III

You have succeeded in life when all you really want is only what you really need.Vernon Howard

Quote IV

If you want to get laid, go to college. If you want an education, go to the library. Frank Zappa

Quote V

There is nothing so stable as change. Bob Dylan

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. In this case Ann Coulter.

She’s no shrinking violet.

What did Delta Airlines expect Ann Coulter to do when the airline summarily bumped her from a reserved “Comfort+’’ seat that featured 3 inches of additional legroom?

The 6 ft. tall leggy blonde political commentator was none too pleased with how the incident was handled by the airline and immediately took to social media to let her 1.6 million followers know.

Coulter unleashed on Delta, and given the airline industry’s recent history of poor customer service, it certainly didn’t help matters. Either way, her effort drew plenty of attention online

Bet that was worth the price of admission.

*****

The Nanny State. By God it is international.

Inmates are staging riots over a new Government ban on smoking in prisons, which is seeing tobacco steadily phased out.
A ban on tobacco cigarettes is now being slowly introduced into prisons, with several jails already having banned them outright.
Others, meanwhile, are preparing to be completely smoke-free by September.

Time stands still for no one. 18 tech products that didn't exist 10 years ago.

*****

The "Left", they don't care about quality. They don't care about accuracy. They only care about "diversity".

Academics and scholars must be mindful about using research done by only straight, white men, according to two scientists who argued that it oppresses diverse voices and bolsters the status of already privileged and established white male scholars.

Geographers Carrie Mott and Daniel Cockayne argued in a recent paper that doing so also perpetuates what they call “white heteromasculinism,” which they defined as a “system of oppression” that benefits only those who are “white, male, able-bodied, economically privileged, heterosexual, and cisgendered.” (Cisgendered describes people whose gender identity matches their birth sex.)

*****

10 Commandments not good enough for you? Then Sharia is for you?

If you think stoning women, forced child marriages, polygamy, killing gays and FGM are great ideas…
You are probably a useful idiot clueless Lib who babbles incessantly about “cultural diversity.”

ONT Commentary? I just can't without using every profane word I can think of.

Feminist Magazine Explains Why You Must Not Gender Your Pets

Progressives progress. Like the Geico commercials say, it’s what they do. No matter how insane their ideology, they always find a way to progress still further into lunacy — even when no normal person would think it could be possible, as with the transgender agenda. Now they tell us that it is politically incorrect to assign genders to pets. From the feminist revolutionaries at Medusa Magazine:

Fucking retarded assholes

*****

Do you recall the names Paul Nungesser and Emma Sulkowicz? Emma made Paul's life hell. And Columbia University is paying for it.

Columbia “recognizes” that “Paul’s remaining time at Columbia became very difficult for him”! That is as close to an apology and a confession as it gets.

July 16, 2014, Blues guitarist Johnny Winter died at the age of 70 in Zurich, just days after playing at the Lovely Days Festival in Austria. Winter, who was instantly recognisable by his long white hair, worked with some of the greatest bluesmen, producing several albums for his childhood hero Muddy Waters - with whom he won a number of Grammys. via thisdayinmusic.com

July 16, 1981, US singer-songwriter Harry Chapin, who had success in the 70s with 'Taxi’, ‘W-O-L-D’ and a No. 1 ‘Cat’s In The Cradle’, was killed aged 38 suffering a cardiac arrest while driving on a New York expressway. His car was hit from behind by a tractor-trailer, causing the gas tank to explode. via thisdayinmusic.com

Automation. How many people will it displace from the work force? Why robots may not replace humans after all.

The researchers caution that it can be hard to estimate these aggregate results because, while automation may displace workers, directly lowering employment opportunities and wages, other industries might hire those laborers. Furthermore, there could be productivity gains that may wind up expanding employment opportunities in the very industries in which IRs are used.

The findings suggest that the impact of robots is distinct from, and only weakly correlated with, potentially confounding variables such as imports, offshoring, the decline of routine jobs (such as information processing), and other computer technology. The researchers also determined that their results, in areas that saw great increases in robot usage, were not due to a preexisting downward trend in employment or wages prior to 1990.

Whew, big sigh of relief here at The ONT.

Who knew? Power causes brain damage.

A spate of recent articles corroborate what I already suspected, that holding elected office is the neurological equivalent of getting kicked in the head by a donkey.

"Subjects under the influence of power," Dacher Keltner, a professor at University of California, Berkeley found, "acted as if they had suffered a traumatic brain injury—becoming more impulsive, less risk-aware, and, crucially, less adept at seeing things from other people's point of view."

In other words, power turns people into sociopaths

I've started talking with LIV friends about how health insurance is no longer insurance...and that is why it is so expensive.

When you compare it to car insurance which doesn't pay for:

Inspections (check ups)
Oil Changes (routine office visits)
Damage from before you bought the insurance (pre-existing conditions)

etc...

They get it.

Following up on a recent ONT when I mentioned an email being read the wrong way or going flat and you said you could relate bc you had the same experience in front of a live audience that you had to entertain.

My point was this about correcting grammar here: Be careful in the way you word such corrections. Sometimes, it comes across as haughty or like you're shaming someone when you are sincerely trying to offer constructive criticism.

So that's all I have to say on that subject.
Hope you're sleeping well night times.

As for whether Star Wars or Star Trek reigns supreme, the answer, sadly, is Star Wars.

Why? Despite Imperial Storm Troopers having small arms accuracy that couldn't hit a Borg cube at 50 meters, the Red Shirts are always killed.

116 YouTube is dangerous.

Found a vid on Making of Back to the Future 2. Then found Making of part 1. Then part 3.

Then there was "Teens react" to BTTF2. Which was amusing. Not quite as amusing as Teens React to Windows 95, but amusing.

So, then, I wanted to watch the whole BTTF series again. (The edit that merges all 3 is best.)

Then I watched making of Ferris Bueller. So, then, I wanted to watch that again. Love that parade sequence. Cast of thousands, no CGI in those days.

Then there was a bit of Kwai Chang Caine fighting some angry cowboys, mostly by ducking. But I did not want to watch the Kung Fu series again. Milady and I used to watch it every week. Gosh, that was a long time ago. SNL early season days, IIRC.

Then there was a clip from Big Bang Theory about how the elevator got broken. Clips are the best way to watch this series, I think.

Oh, look. There's content in the post. Guess I'll check that out.

By which I mean,

Howdy, Hordey.

Just saw "Rogue One". Stormtroopers were fucking deadly.

Gives heavy credence to the supposition that (like Leia stated), they'd let Han, Leia, and Luke go deliberately by shooting everywhere but them.

"They let us go..." is what Leia said, and she was right. Remember what Obi-wan said : "Only Imperial Stormtroopers are so precise.."

They're crack shots. When they miss, it is because they want to.

178 I get the part about "diversity" and "inclusion", the question is whether these concepts are ever discussed or implemented without an industrial grade hate whitey component.

It begs the question, if those who are the champions of these ideas are simply out to tear everything down. It's largely a check-the-block exercise in too many fields. The left have so many contradictory ideas, the mental gymnastics involved must really be tough on them. They aren't allowed to think for themselves, if they are capable of it. Race and sex in particular are used to work everybody over into a big guilt trip starting at an early age.

Rather than argue ideas, it's a simple matter to claim that "you didn't vote for me because I'm a Woman"; or half the country is irredeemably deplorable etc. Leftists are awfully lucky that most people aren't really anything like they are portrayed.

Normal people are operating at a distinct disadvantage because leftists are far actually worse than they can imagine.

233 I cannot imagine (no exaggeration) why I would ever fly again. Hearing situations that Ann Coulter most recently and others just this past year have gone through cements that attitude. From the incompetence, uselessness, and arrogance of TSA thugs to the brain dead clowns of the gate and flight personnel, it is not worth it. Add to that, by my standards, Coulter is a Munchkin.

And they still haven't said which individual made the decision to pull this stunt and who condoned it. Makes me wonder if the 'careful' security screening is to protect the plane and passengers or if it is to make it safe for the arrogant, inexcusable behavior of the crew.

I hope she successfully sues the living shit out of Delta. There is no apology or even firing some lower level flunky that will make a damn bit of difference. Hit Delta so hard in the purse that they will have to actually value their customers. I don't give a hoot in hell if the airline has the 'legal' authority to act this way. Such incredible stupidity must be dealt with.

The airline personnel who are competent and pleasant, probably the majority, must be driven crazy by these brain damaged fools.

Instead of the cost of a plane ticket, I'll put the money into maintaining my car in good working order.

Mini rant off.

Werner Von Braun must have stolen the idea for lug nuts from the VW factory as he fled Germany. Because for decades, VW didn't use lug lug nuts; they used lug bolts, which meant there was nothing to center the wheel on while you tried to start a bolt. So you had to balance the wheel on your toe or some other appendage, while turning the brake drum behind it, so as to line up one hole in which to start a lug bolt.

I got a 7 shot revolver that sticks on one of the chambers. Any ideas on how to fix it?

Serious question.

I can fix it, but I hesitate to offer specific advice to one unique problem with one gun, for all the usual reasons.

Get some toolmaker's dye, and use the common steps to help determine where the interference is occurring.

Factories have been know to let an out-of-tolerance part slip by Q.C., every now and the.

And with a revolver, the timing, which is the interplay of various moving parts at EXACTLY the right millisecond in the operating sequence, is beyond critical.

So, it could be a "fit" problem, or it could be a "timing" problem. Or, both.

Generally, this is a send-back-to-the-factory problem, or alternatively, to Cylinder & Slide or other high-reputation revolver gunsmith.

I can walk a rookie through "general purpose" smoothing, but the problem described is not this... it's fraught with hazard and manifold opportunity to make it much, much worse.

Which is kind of strange because they have pretty tight gun laws in most of those places on the list. Venezuela tightened them even further a couple years ago.

357 And I have to say that I don't get the great need for Square. A store can easily allow credit cards to be used by just having a credit card transaction page on their website and then letting people use the web page to pay at the counter. Those pages are pretty easy to set up (and have been for some time) and were available to use long before any Square stuff was around. In fact, they made credit card transactions much easier because the online rules for credit card transactions were minimal.

But no one ever seemed to use this idea, for some odd reason, even though it was simple as pie.

373 Why robots may not replace humans after all.

Southwest has, in general, created a giant mess at check-ins with their little randomly placed "self-serve" kiosks. Lines form randomly and then break down (as do the kiosks).

At MSY (New Orleans), however, they've solved the problem with a human. One lady directing a single, l-o-o-ong line of people to the next available (and working!) of the twenty kiosks. Easily five times faster than San Jose.

(And don't get me started on phone menus!)

Of course, their automated belt was down, so all our luggage was just piling up behind them...

In my senior year in HS, would've been late '84 or early '85, I too got slammed in the rear by a chick. I was driving a '74 Ford LTD, stopped to make a left hand turn.

She was driving some little fureign POS. It was totalled. Front end smashed to bits. The only thing it did to the LTD was bend the tag up under the rear bumper.

It did one other thing. The right front door had a squeak to it, it would sort of catch. The impact fixed that.

Posted by: Anon Y. Mous at July 16, 2017 11:21 PM (FUu/Z)

Older cats can get plugged up, and they stop eating and go skeletal and can die from it. The treatment is an enema, and the longer term maintenance is to make sure they eat wet food instead of dry, and at times they can be treated with some of the same class of laxatives people get - but talk frankly with your vet before you start dosing your cat with OTC stuff - some of it will kill cats.

And yes, I am told they hate it, sulk a lot, and if you love the cat, the possibility that she might wind up crapping in your shoes in revenge at least shows she is regular.

Posted by: yankeefifth at July 16, 2017 11:53 PM (0wem/)

491 Thing is, a skilled driver in a two-wheel-drive, damn near any brand or model of vehicle, can often successfully go places that an unskilled idiot in some 4x4 will end up stuck, high-centered or rolled.

Ground clearance is the most vital thing. And a 2wd with a front-mounted winch can still be a formidable off-road conveyance.

No, we're not gonna take a Lucerne rock climbing. But I've taken '71 & '72 SuperBeetles up some pretty gnarly dry washes on a certain Texas ranch. And once had to press a '91 BMW 735 il into deer-hunting duty, over a rain softened, mudholed caliche road.

Yes, I got stuck, and yes, a four-foot section of "corduroy road" made from small branches, allowed me to roll out, too.

Bagged the deer, got out and got to the processor's, too.

And Ford's Explorer didn't start the SUV thing. Honors there go to various Land Rover marques, and Toyota's revered (original) FJ "Land Rover clones", as well as the vaunted Land Cruiser, which really led the class into more luxurious SUV prototypes.

What is to be lamented though, is the Unit Body evolution of the SUV. A proper SUV will be body-on-frame, with some inherent truck grade capabilities.

Not many such being made anymore, are there?

But, I guess two can play that game.

517 There's another scary story at that link. An Air Canada Airbus attempted a landing at Frisco. On the taxiway, with the other aircraft on the ground. Pulled up at the last minute, missing the closest aircraft by 29 feet.

I read that a few days ago. He didn't pull up of his own accord, though. Another plane alerted the tower that he was lining up on a taxiway parallel to the runway (with 4 planes as sitting ducks on it) and the tower ordered an emergency abort.

Said I'd used their music. The only music in the vid was me playing "shave and a haircut" on my end-logo.

I filed objection and they dropped the dispute. Not the first time.

They weren't going to take down my video, just give any monetization to the other folks.

I only recently learned that some folks actually make significant income off of YouTube. So, I started allowing ads on some of mine.

I looked today and found that I had doubled my income since the previous week. I've earned 4¢.

549 Always fun to see one of those huge companies that seem to have customer service a notch below that of the KGB take a sharp punch to the kidney.

Delta seemingly alienated a customer for no logical reason other than that they don't really care what some troublesome customer thinks. And because many of their policies are based on what makes their lives more convenient. Instead of focusing on how to make customers happier, the model is trying to find the lowest point they can get away with without killing their bottom line.

563 My family was always pro-GM. Grew up with Chevy, Pontiac and Oldsmobile cars. My first owned car that I bought and paid for myself was a Buick Century. The Oldsmobiles had their Transmissions bust several times. Once was after coming back from some repairs, I drove it to the post office, and then had to walk home because the transmission broke. Also water pumps breaking a lot. The headgasket on my Buick broke at a bad time. Oh yeah, the Buick also only had a 12-13 gallon gas tank despite being 6-cylinders so I was lucky to get 300 miles before needing to refuel.

Now I drive a Hyundai, that gets much better gas mileage and has a much bigger gas tank. Fuck GM.

594 Alright. I'm the sound tech for the current one, which is a musical version of "Shrek" with an 18-and-under cast.

Next, is a production of "Moon Over Buffalo", a very funny farce. I have a part, but not a lot of jokes, because someone has to play the straight guy, dang it.

After THAT, in the fall, we're presenting a musical written and composed by an area native who has worked on Broadway since the 80s.

That's a lot of time in the theater over the next 90 days, but since I don't have a girlfriend anymore, at least I have the free time.

I think you have that backwards. You should demand that the ticket is invalid since it wasn't filled out correctly. You don't have to offer any information about anything.

I guess if you drew in a "driving while blonde" box with a Sharpie, and pencilled in a checkmark, the court wouldn't see the humor in it.

So officer takes license and then he asks 'Do you have any guns. knives, grenades in vehicle?' I laugh and say no while thinking dude really grenades.

So yeah get warning about the lights and a ticket for the insurance goof. So continue on my way stewing. Finally get home and look at the ticket. Everything is faintly written but in the violations section where he's supposed to check off what I was cited for, all the boxes are blank.

Really? He gave you a ticket because you had an out of date proof of insurance? Everytime I've been unlucky enough to get pulled over and didn't have an up to date PoI all I had to do was send along a copy of my PoI and it was all good.

As for all the boxes being blank, its probably a triplicate form and whatever winds up being sent to the courthouse will have the checkmark showing. So their advice is going to be to send in the check with the amount for the "No insurance" citation.

It's a term that alt-right Trump supporters use to denigrate other men-- typically on the right, who do NOT support Trump- who let black men eff their wives/girlfriends while they watch.

It gets kind of fuzzy here, but the alt-right Trump people hate the non-trump people by letting the wives/girfriends do that with black men, it's a blow to their white supremacy kkk agenda.

Others will explain this better than me. Bank on that.

"Blue Check Mark" media, is a "Rating" given by (I think) Twitter, for CERTAIN USERS having been "verified" as honest, truthiness, toe-the-left-wing-line, etc., CONSISTENTLY, so that their posts, tweets, twerks or whatever, are considered as "VERIFIED" by Twitter, or whoever.

You will not see anyone such as David Burge, "Blue Check Marked" on Twitter. Nor, Bill Whittle, etc., ad infinitum.

But if you post as a transgendered cross species identifying as a suppressed alt-pigment minority suffering from body dismorphysm and subsequent judgementalism from neo-Nazi conservatives....well....here's your Blue Check Mark!

Or, something like that.

633 Nothing says fun like:

Being over the Atlantic in a C-5, just got served the meal, fork is raised. and the plane drops in under a second what feels like a hundred feet.

Or over South American rain forest in a C-130 when lightning zaps one engine, so the crew feathers it, levels the plane out of its 60 degree combat turn, and fly five hours to nearest friendly base while the loadmaster wonders how quick he can kick the three pallets out the back if they lose another engine.

But the most excitement I've ever had? Surviving an Italian taxi driver's idea of driving in Rome. That was scarier than the planes.

They will have to age the actress then because as you know the character has a daughter in her twenties. We'll be using makeup to age the leads, George and Charlotte, and George's mom, Edith. As for being a bit young for their roles...unfortunately, there are cliques developed around each of the directors associated with the theatre, and some actors won't audition for productions if a certain director is at the helm. Or maybe I'm just insane to be involved with three consecutive productions.

643 My family was always pro-GM.

Fuck GM.

Yeah I tried to go American every time we went for a new car, but I kept going back to acura. they go forever. The last good American car I had was a 2000 dodge intrepid with the 3.2 engine. What a great car that was. It had a trunk that could fit small music store, got a solid 32mpg on the highway, was comfortable as hell, and drove real nice. I wasn't trusting much out there when the Intrepid got old, so I went back to acura. When that acura got old the wife started looking for a car again. I couldn't find anything American with a glowing reliability report. Chrysler was now owned by fiat, the ford V6 is shit, chevy was ugly, etc, so she went back to acura again. Then when it was my turn I looked at a new mustang, and was sooo close to getting it but forget driving that in snow, and everything that I really liked or would buy American wise (Camaro, challenger, mustang) were all rear wheel drive, and anything front wheel drive looked like frigging ass. Was frustrating.

Aircraft anti-lock-brakes seem to have preceded Class 8 semi-truck anti-lock brakes. Which had amassed quite the horrid reputation within the industry, but I'm not sure of the reasons why.

Both, came before the common availability of ABS brakes in the mass-market automobile and light-truck industry.

There is a pre-history of ABS brakes that is not known by the average consumer.

Some enterprising, income-from-writing-commenter, could make a feature length article from this, and shop it to Car & Driver, Road & Track, and other popular periodicals.

I'm looking at a WHOLE BUNCH of commenters/writers from amongst Teh Horde, here.

And no, don't look at me for this, either. I'm a knowledgeable layman, at best.

It's a test of the visual vocabulary of the movie that you can immediately identify the characters, but I think The Matrix, at least the first one, does much better than the Star Wars 7 through 9.

665 The most excitement I ever had? Trying to get out of Venezuela from a Carribean resort town where Toyota had an assembly plant. A coup against Chavez was underway, and rumors were that all air traffic was going to be shut down. The airline we were using from Cumana to Caracas actually sent people to the Toyota offices to get us to the airport as soon as possible because they didn't want their airplane stranded in a small town. We were rushed to the airport, and the plane actually came to the terminal (to pick up up passengers rather than waiting at the gate).

Talk about the door not hitting you in the ass? That plane door was actually closed with people in the entrance and the engines torquing up. Well, we got out of Cumana, but that was just the start. And I had a 102 degree fever.

688 Only about four movies a week are financially viable at a medium budget. Everything else falls between the cracks. Tough week, too bad. And through this bottleneck, character actors like Landau do not get recognized, despite the merit of their watchable acting or devotion to the craft. Ben Stein said that when UPS delivers a package in Beverly Hills, the guy is as handsome as Brad Pitt, and is as talented an actor as far as he knows. 2016 was considered a hard year for celebrities, but it's only the start. Every year we will take note (or not) of someone who the Hollywood system could never pay back enough as much as he deserved. Do you know Michael Nyqvuist, who died this year? Or Adam West, or Roger Moore, or John Hurt? Anyway, here's Martin Landau.

My first GPS was on a flip phone in 2007. If you heard the voice say that, then you missed your current turn. You were going to miss the next one, guaranteed I fckng assure you, because of how long those 3G phones with tiny circuits took to get a new set of directions.

699 That robotics article was Pollyanna nonsense. The robots they used as the basis of their study, while more sophisticated than pre-1990 models, are extremely limited compared to what is now in development. The difference is AI, which is advancing quite well now. Don't hold your breath waiting for something that pass a Turing Test but that isn't needed to expand the effective applications into a vast range of previously untouched areas of employment. And you only have to train one unit for every other unit to be able perform the same task.

This is unprecedented and it will be a big issue, especially when we're importing large numbers of the people most likely to be rendered unemployable.

700 I just dropped a Magellan GPS off at Goodwill tonight. I have a newer model in addition to my phone and they wanted a ridiculous price to update the map data. It was already getting badly obsolete four years ago, so I cannot imagine how bad it is now.

I haven't used the big newer one in over a year but I keep it around in the back of the car in case I unexpectedly go outside the region on local storage in my phone and cannot get a cell signal. The last two times I turned it on was to install updates.

It won't take long just watch and see how the fellas lay their money down.
Her style is new but the face is the same as it was so long ago,
But from her eyes, a different smile like that of one who knows.

Well, it's been ten years and maybe more since I first set eyes on you.
The best years of my life gone by, here I am alone and blue.
Some people cry and some people die by the wicked ways of love;
But I'll just keep on rollin' along with the grace of the Lord above.

People talkin' all around 'bout the way you left me flat,
I don't care what the people say, I know where their jive is at.
One thing I do have on my mind, if you can clarify please do,
It's the way you call me by another guy's name when I try to make love to you.
I try to make love but it ain't no use.

Work so hard I couldn't unwind, get some money saved;
Abuse my love a thousand times, however hard I tried.
Heartbreaker, your time has come, can't take your evil way;
Go away, Heartbreaker

Why yes, I AM listening to Led Zep II.

"Let me put every inch of my love into you". Whatever could this mean?

"With a purple umbrella and a 50 cent hat"... Gee, Prince, is that anything like a raspberry beret, the kind you find in a second hand store?
