Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Christmas in July (MJ)Ohhhhh yeeessssssss. Hillary Clinton wants to play a role in next year's midterm elections. It's just not clear yet what that role will be.Seems to me she only has two roles: 1. Destroyer of hopes 2. Destroy of hopes and dreams This, my moron friends, is what we call a no lose situation. She either applies her reverse Midas touch and we watch every candidate turn to shit or the spry, youthful, mid 60's bench players bring the Dem cold war hot. Wood status: Oak [x]Balsa [ ] As I've said before, my political views have shrunk down to observing who's acting the fool, but in my entire life of observing politics I have never seen the cluster**k that is our opposition party--both the media and professional Left. I did something I learned long ago never to do and that is get into an argument with someone of FB. They really believe that Trump's impeachment is imminent. And they keep believing that Mueller's investigation is going to follow the exact contours of Watergate. I keep pointing out that Watergate started with an actual crime and actual arrests and that to avoid jail, people began talking....But it's no use.
But I got to thinking--what if they do manage to put something damning together and Trump gets in trouble? Well, Trump is NOT Nixon and WILL NEVER resign "for the good of the nation." That leaves impeachment which Trump will fight in a scorched earth policy that will lay bare all the sins of Obama and Clinton for all to see..... Regarding the wind turbine in the sidebar, the short answer is: no, it won't.
Slightly longer answer: 1. It appears to be a downwind turbine, like the Savonius rotor. The maximum peripheral speed of such is slightly less than the wind speed. Limits the amount of energy one can extract from the wind. But downwind turbines are self-starting, so there's that. Vertical-axis turbines that use airfoils, which can spin a lot faster, are not self-starting, so you have to motor them up. 2. Regardless of its efficiency, or lack thereof, the wind doesn't blow 100% of the time. You will need a LOT of battery backup. Or a small nuclear reactor. Your choice. I and I'm sure all right thinking, fair minded people are happy to see you back and continuing to fight for the important issues that affect the hard working middle class families of America such as climate chaos, the proliferation of military style automatic assault weapons wreaking havoc on our streets, the lack of safe spaces on our college campuses, the denial of bathroom rights for the transgendered, and the continual assault on the first amendment rights of our unbiased and nonpartisan free press!!

All I could think of was this: Picture me smoking a big cigar . . with my feet up on a desk. You know, like an 1890s old west rich guy ~ huge oak desk, paneling all round in an office room in the newly built state capital. Lots of flunkies around harrumphing. I take my feet off the desk, lean forward, quieting everyone with my hand and say, in a southern/western accent: "Boys, what we have here is a win, win situation."

bWe have reached the point where resounding defeat of the Dems at the polls - while of course preferable to the alternative - amounts to very little (at the federal level).
So I find it impossible to get very excited by the prospect of making the Dem rubble bounce, to borrow an expression. If a pause, a freeze - with the GOP being the key reason that no actual change can occur - is the most that can be accomplished any more, then all hopes are false ones. And, paradoxically, the absolute necessity of minimizing Dem power is the main asset the GOP has in not just refusing to represent their voters, but now increasingly becoming part of the problem. Because where are their (more sophisticated, informed) voters going to go, regardless of how histrionic GOP failure is? As I noted this morning, the Dem slogan (parody or real) "Have you seen the other guy?" is in fact the implicit GOP slogan. Posted by: rhomboid at July 09, 2017 09:22 PM (QDnY+) 117

Posted by: t-bird at July 09, 2017 09:31 PM (pszv/) Here in Canada, most all of the remote wellsites have a solar panel to power the telemetry radio which sends production numbers back to the field office. Oil companies are not stupid; where solar power makes economic sense, they use it quite readily. Here's an idea I'd like to see tried: set up solar stills to distill produced water from oil/gas wells. Many wells produce several barrels of water for every barrel of oil. That water is invariably very salty. Run it through a solar still, sell the clean, potable distilled water to local ranchers for livestock watering (or just give it to them to purchase goodwill), and have a much smaller volume of extremely salty brine to truck to the disposal wells. Win, win. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at July 09, 2017 09:39 PM (XUcIQ) 174

OT (sort of) : I always thought Carceri, especially Monte Cook's vision of it, was the best-designed of the D&D lower planes.
It had original monsters (besides those Titans) like the Vaath and the Demodands. The settings were terrifying yet evocative. And the reason the plane exists was the best reason of any of the planes: this is the multiverse prison. In 1e "Manual of the Planes", Tarterus, as it was called then, just had the Titans. But in Planescape it also had the Revolutionary League. The people who were there were all certain that the only reason that the various Hells exist was because of oppression. So where do they make their base camp... that's right, the specific Hell that does exist because the other gods have sent their evil losers thereto. I think Monte Cook was a closet Burkean Conservative. Posted by: boulder terlit hobo at July 09, 2017 09:47 PM (6FqZa) Posted by: Eromero at July 09, 2017 09:47 PM (zLDYs) 197

I'm thinking it's more and more likely that FBI investigation of his wife is due to him critically injuring Hillary in the primaries. She still would have lost to Trump, but that did her no favors. It could even be a situation where Bernie's wife is guilty, but would've have blissfully gotten away with it if he'd been content to sit in the Senate and yell at clouds. The new allegation from the MSM is a meeting between Kushner and some Trump advisors back before Trump won the nomination with some Russian lawyers.
Supposedly they were promised 'dirt' on Hillary Clinton, but the most interesting detail is the supposed involvement of Fusion GPS, who were HILLARY's oppo research team. They're the ones who wrote the BS 'dossier' claiming Trump's Pee Party with Russian hookers, remember? And who wound up getting paid by Comey and the FBI, as well... So Kushner is told he can get dirt on Hillary by people acting on behalf of Hillary's paid oppo research team? The media doesn't want to seem to draw this connection, but to my seasoned eye it looks like the whole meeting was a set-up by Hillary for the 'Trump Collusion' BS. Yep the mid-terms are obviously critical to America's future.
If, somehow, the Dems should gain ground (esp. in the Senate), then the urgent GOP agenda is in peril. You know, the urgent agenda. The one they've been advancing since January. The one where they're forcing vulnerable Dems to take very unpopular votes on big issues - you know, the way politics actually worked on the Hill for centuries, up to fairly recently. So yeah, it's vitally important that Hillary get involved and help suppress Dem victories. Because of the urgent agenda. Posted by: rhomboid at July 09, 2017 09:59 PM (QDnY+) 227

Batteries, I hate Batteries!
Lead acid batteries are supposed to last about twenty years, (in stand by duty). At different facilities I worked at, we were doing good to get twelve years. We babied the things, temperature controlled, discharged only every eighteen months to two years, etc. They weren't being charged and discharged daily, and deep cycled often. Even then, we would have some batteries that failed in three years (big oops with the lead alloys by the manu), and we had to scramble to replace them. VLRA, Ni-Cad, and Lithium batteries are even more short lived. Plan on replacing them every few years. Battery storage is great in theory, not in practice. You are better off with a stand by generator for back up power, and using wind and solar as it is generated. Posted by: rd at July 09, 2017 10:06 PM (4dz1m) 243

Looking at my energy bill we fo an average of 50 kwH a month (we have a fairly large - 2800 sqft - house in the midAtlantic region, with gas heat and water heater.)
Let's round up to 2 kwH a day. A 1000 W hybrid wind and solar system (500W of each) would be a pretty good generation source to cover that. You can do that for about $1000 on eBay. Probably ought to do a full days worth of battery, and actually you need 2x because you don't want to cycle the battery too much - using an online solar bank calculator it says 347 AH of 12v batteries, that will run about $700 right there. Then you need to tie that into your grid so tie box is another $400 or so. Need a pole for the windmill. So this could be done for ~$2500 or less. ROI on that (for me, lookng at our bills) would be about 18 months. Posted by: blaster at July 09, 2017 10:16 PM (jHrzU) 247
Oh, shit, I was looking at my usage wrong. It is 50kwH per DAY not per month!
That makes me off by, er, umm, a factor of 30! That means my battery capacity would have to be 8667 AH - that means the batteries would be about $15000! And the generating capacity would have to be WAY more than above. Let's just say ROI would never prove out because battery lifetime is going to be <10 years.
