Hillary Clinton wants to play a role in next year's midterm elections. It's just not clear yet what that role will be.

Seems to me she only has two roles:

1. Destroyer of hopes

2. Destroy of hopes and dreams

This, my moron friends, is what we call a no lose situation. She either applies her reverse Midas touch and we watch every candidate turn to shit or the spry, youthful, mid 60's bench players bring the Dem cold war hot.

As I've said before, my political views have shrunk down to observing who's acting the fool, but in my entire life of observing politics I have never seen the cluster**k that is our opposition party--both the media and professional Left.

Slightly longer answer:
1. It appears to be a downwind turbine, like the Savonius rotor. The maximum peripheral speed of such is slightly less than the wind speed. Limits the amount of energy one can extract from the wind. But downwind turbines are self-starting, so there's that. Vertical-axis turbines that use airfoils, which can spin a lot faster, are not self-starting, so you have to motor them up.

2. Regardless of its efficiency, or lack thereof, the wind doesn't blow 100% of the time. You will need a LOT of battery backup. Or a small nuclear reactor. Your choice.

I hope that some kind of discreet announcement can be made on AOSHQ regarding the most effective ways to help Vlad. Yeah, you can use the grid as a "battery", too, but the game is stacked against small "alternative energy" producers, and with good reason; too much non-dispatchable energy in the grid makes it unstable. Sort of like a Ponzi scheme; the first few ~~investors~~ suckers do well, and the rest get screwed.

If I really wanted to go "off-grid" here, I'd build a whole mess of big, dumb Savonius rotors, and dump the unused electricity into electrolyzing water to make hydrogen, and burn the hydrogen for heat, or even use it as fuel in a piston-engine generator to make electricity. Efficiency? Pathetic. Capital cost to build it? Piddling. Time to build it? Daunting.

GE had a pilot project building 20Kw batteries for rural cell towers and such. Places around the world without consistent power. These things were pretty small, and just sit, trickle charging until the power goes out.

Here in Canada, most all of the remote wellsites have a solar panel to power the telemetry radio which sends production numbers back to the field office. Oil companies are not stupid; where solar power makes economic sense, they use it quite readily.

Here's an idea I'd like to see tried: set up solar stills to distill produced water from oil/gas wells. Many wells produce several barrels of water for every barrel of oil. That water is invariably very salty. Run it through a solar still, sell the clean, potable distilled water to local ranchers for livestock watering (or just give it to them to purchase goodwill), and have a much smaller volume of extremely salty brine to truck to the disposal wells. Win, win.

195 OT (sort of) : I always thought Carceri, especially Monte Cook's vision of it, was the best-designed of the D&D lower planes.

It had original monsters (besides those Titans) like the Vaath and the Demodands. The settings were terrifying yet evocative. And the reason the plane exists was the best reason of any of the planes: this is the multiverse prison.

In 1e "Manual of the Planes", Tarterus, as it was called then, just had the Titans. But in Planescape it also had the Revolutionary League. The people who were there were all certain that the only reason that the various Hells exist was because of oppression. So where do they make their base camp... that's right, the specific Hell that does exist because the other gods have sent their evil losers thereto.

I think Monte Cook was a closet Burkean Conservative.

That's actually a vital part of every commercial communications site. Cellsites, cable TV hubs, switching centers etc. Great big honkin' deep-cycle battery banks, usually the size of a refrigerator.

Thing is, they're expensive, heavy and can be dangerous if they aren't inspected and maintained on schedule.

Lead acid batteries are supposed to last about twenty years, (in stand by duty). At different facilities I worked at, we were doing good to get twelve years. We babied the things, temperature controlled, discharged only every eighteen months to two years, etc. They weren't being charged and discharged daily, and deep cycled often. Even then, we would have some batteries that failed in three years (big oops with the lead alloys by the manu), and we had to scramble to replace them.

VLRA, Ni-Cad, and Lithium batteries are even more short lived. Plan on replacing them every few years.

Battery storage is great in theory, not in practice.

You are better off with a stand by generator for back up power, and using wind and solar as it is generated.

Let's round up to 2 kwH a day. A 1000 W hybrid wind and solar system (500W of each) would be a pretty good generation source to cover that. You can do that for about $1000 on eBay.

Probably ought to do a full days worth of battery, and actually you need 2x because you don't want to cycle the battery too much - using an online solar bank calculator it says 347 AH of 12v batteries, that will run about $700 right there. Then you need to tie that into your grid so tie box is another $400 or so. Need a pole for the windmill.

So this could be done for ~$2500 or less.

ROI on that (for me, lookng at our bills) would be about 18 months.
