Ace of Spades Pet Thread

cop dogs.jpg

(I'm hoping a certain dog in my world is paying attention.)

Welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Let your furry buddy know it's time to kick back and relax.

*****

The Pet Thread wants to know, which one of you Morons did this?

Jerk? That's harsh. Moron? Yes.

A Little of This. A Little of That.

We all have our thoughts about Lena Dunham. Poor dog. But, at least it wasn't sat on by the whale or eaten. h/t Lizzy

The next story is an awesome one sent into us by PaleRider. In a crazy world full of hate, intolerance and awful restaurant food, A miracle story!!!

Blast from the distant past

The guy who wrote "the waltzing cat" wrote lyrics to it.

He's also the guy who wrote the typewriter song and sleigh ride. submitted by Katy

Meet The PetMorons

Quite the story behind our first PetMoron of the week.

This is Roscoe, a foundling pit bull mix. He was a terrific dog, great around kids, horses, other dogs, and the indoor cats. (Outside cats, not so much.) One night, I went to let him in for the night, and he refused to come in. Flipped on the porch light, and this is what I found.

roscoe 1.jpg

Took a bit to figure out what was going on, but when I turned the porch light on, this is what I found:

roscoe 2.jpg

that’s nine baby chickens huddled up behind his bed! The hen (which belonged to my neighbor, across the road) had been hit by a car, and the chicks decided that the safest place to roost was behind that vicious pit bull. I had to find a box, gather all of them up and bring them into the house before Roscoe would come in. Put them in the laundry room, and he spent the night in front of the laundry room door. I’d let them out in the morning, and he’d follow them. Bring them in at night, and he’d follow them into the house.

That was the routine until one morning, he couldn’t get up (he was almost 15 then) and we made the last trip to the vet.

Don’t let anyone tell you that pit bulls are vicious.

(And Charlie Brown was right: The more I learn about people, the better I like my dogs.)

The survivors in the backyard.

We discovered these two beautiful creatures living in our outdoor garden shed when they were kittens, around the early fall last year when it was still hot here in California. They were little, maybe only a few months old and they were tiny. We estimate the time because there was a heat wave, which is normal for late September. By our backdoor is a spigot with a big metal bowl under it to catch the water. Normally birds drink, splash, whatever out of it, and one night, my sister came in the house and said something scurried into the bushes, it was at the bowl, and she must have surprised it. Seriously freaked her out (we had just gone through the experience of a possum taking up residence in the shed, but it was long gone). And she said it was little. Whatever it was, it was little.

The boy, on the left - we call him B-man or BB, short for Batman because of his cowl-like coloring - we eventually found sleeping in a small wire hanging basket filled with sphagnum moss, and God only knows where the girl was sleeping because we never saw her out in the open, only occasionally, a good few weeks after we found him, a brief glimpse of fur here and there. And we call her Mommy, because, well, she became a mommy.

They were both feral, her more than him. He was friendly, easily seduced by food. A little petting here and there allowed, but still skittish. And her? She'd eat and disappear. Not too interested in making an acquaintance. We discovered that our neighbors were feeding them, too, and they seemed interested in adopting them. But they weren't really locked into it, and really, we have a much nicer backyard, and they liked it here. Lots of plants to sleep and hide under and not be seen. Reluctantly, we'd spruced up their accommodations. Beds in the shed were made, toasty blankets, water, food. It was starting to get cold by then, and the girls next door didn't have any place outside set up for them, but still were weakly saying they wanted them. We advised the girls to get them fixed, gave them out vet's name, the feral fixing rate, all the information. But nothing happened, so we made plans to do it, just in case.

And then. She could not have been more than seven months old when we saw her tummy. When we told the neighbors our suspicions, that was that.

Three beautiful kittens were born in the early morning hours on April 1st, in the ivy, under a ladder, right next to my bedroom's sliding glass door. That was when Mommy had to trust us, and we got to know the loving, sweet, gentle girl that we have to find a good home for.

So we need the morons help. If anybody knows anybody in the San Gabriel Valley - we live in Covina - that would be so kind to adopt these sweet, sweet, deserving creatures, please let me know. There are also the three kittens that need moms and dads so if you could help us out, we would be forever grateful.

If okay with Mis Hum, you can contact me through the pet thread email.

P.S. We would keep all five if we could but we already have eight wonderful catz and we just can't keep 'em. And apologies that this is so long but sometimes stories can't be told in a damn paragraph.

Sincerest thanks!!

20 On the police dog meme: Our dear departed Warrior Princess, Maggie, just knew that her job was to protect us and to keep everyone in line. She scolded the other dogs if they misbehaved. She was nanny to an abused puppy and kept him in line. She kept her humans in line sometimes.

She also stationed herself by the back yard gate many times when the other dogs were in the house.

Miss her. We think she was part German Shepherd and part Cocker Spaniel. More attractive as an old dog than as a young one, somehow.

She used it as a freakin' prop to promote herself - lied about it being abused to cast herself as savior, used it in magazine photoshoots, put it on prozac because she was projecting that the dog was neurotic, claimed it bit her, then dumped it when she got two cute puppies. Let's hope she never has kids.

My brother had tarantulas when we were kids. Well, one climbed over the terrarium partition and ate the other. Then he would taunt us with the skin after it molted; would leave it sitting on his desk (or other odd places) so we'd think the live one escaped. Good times!

I've spent plenty of money at the vet for the last six months for my 17-year-old cat.

I don't feel like she's ripping me off. Veterinary costs are orders of magnitude less than people doctor and hospital costs.

When Kira had to have surgery in March, the vet gave me an estimate beforehand. Does a people doctor do that?

No, they don't, and that is a big part of the problem.

Kenny and Taz were my 2 kitties. Kenny was our love child, and Taz was a rescue. Taz was a few months younger than Kenny, and they fell in love at first sight.
Taz disappeared one day, after a few years - we never found out what became of him. Kenny was distraught, always out looking for him. Then he started to act out and got in a few fights with the neighbor cat. He finally accepted the loss, but it was heartbreaking to see his bewilderment.

56 As much as people don't like Lena Dunham(and I find her opinion and self involvement objectionable as well) I have to cut a bit of slack on the door story as well. Shelters don't usually know what happens to the dogs behavior after they leave. The only reason I say this is because we adopted as a pup a dog that came from a shelter NC. He had two of his two chewed off by other dogs, but he was a cutie. He was fine for a while, but then he got very territorial over food and her bit our son-twice. The second time he bit him so hard he bled and needed stitches and the dog just missed his eye-and no, son was not being mean to the dog and never hurt him nor did anyone else. We just never knew after that when he would bite or really do some more damage and we had to put him to sleep. Our son cried and we were very sad.

Hiya horde!!
Yep this is a problem I have. I once had water newts (really!) and my 10 yr old nephew scooped some out in a cup and dropped them in the toilet, flushed, and waited for them to come back up. They didn't. So when he got older, he bought me a chameleon. Perky critter. I tried to bond with it but it never stayed still long enough. Like a speed freak. And I hadda feed it live crickets. The crickets would just sit in the palm of my hand, chirping happily. I could not feed them to the chameleon. I bonded with the crickets. Eventually I gave the chameleon away so it didn't starve, and released the crickets in the park. I still, to this day, cannot feed anything living to another living creature.
So, no snakes in my future, I guess...

Seriously. You should have seen the high cost of the estimate that the vet gave me - over freakin' $400. Oh, and because I could bring her in a cat carrier, she's not eligible for the feral spay of $50 anymore.
We've been going to the same clinic for 11 years and they have never, and I mean never, given us a break on any treatment price.

59 Dad went to the county animal shelter and brought home a Sharpei cross dog yesterday. Toby is fitting in pretty well. I was reluctant to get a dog that was there because of being an escape artist but since dad is pretty much home all of the time I think it will be OK. He is content to stay in our yard when we are outside. We had to go get some hay today and left Toby in the house for the three hours and he didn't chew up the couch or anything.

86 ThunderB -- keep talking about the dog flu. So sorry about your dog.

Peoples, listen carefully - any large group (humans, pets, herds, etc) are vulnerable to massive viral infections. 'Socializing' your dog does not mean doggy or kitty daycare. Before you leave your pet for a procedure they must have a kennel cough vaccine. New viruses appear all the time.

I'm in IL, and two years ago at our scheduled appointment, the vet was called for an emergency. When she finally came in (approx 2 hrs later), she said that was the first dog that she was able to save -- and only because they were already coming in and the owners called ahead. She was almost in tears because she wasn't able to save the others.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but old-fashioned hypochlorite bleach kills viruses. If you have a site where toddlers or pets are around, the old bleach water once or twice a week keeps most of the viruses away.

116 #ruralAdventures

I was gonna rush down, leave a comment, then return to the post, but gosh darn those pet pix wouldn't let me just whiz by. D'aaawwww.

The comment I was gonna rush to make has little to do with pets, I guess. But pets is an anagram for pest.

Earlier, I walked outside barefoot, as I frequently do, on the asphalt driveway, and I felt a sharp rock under my foot. Only, as I lifted my foot, a red wasp flew away and I realized that, for the first time in decades, I'd been stung.

I am kind to wasps. Usually will catch and evict if I find them in the house. I noted earlier today that they seemed drunk on the heat and humidity, as a mud dauber bounced off my forehead. They're usually harmless. But this red wasp didn't care to be stepped on.

Manymany years ago, a mud dauber advised me I was too close to its nest, touching my hand with its stinger, but no injection. This red wasp gave me a solid dose. Possibly a saving grace was it was on my calloused heel, but it still hurt like heel! ; )

(The order of wasp evil: lazy ol' mud daubers, twitchy black wasps, aggressive red wasps, and -fortunately unseen for many years now- terrorist yellowjackets.)

I had barely comprehended that I'd been stung badly, hobbled back to my desk, when my lower back started screaming - maybe the poison had hit a nerve? I managed to lie down, but couldn't find a not-hurting position.

Fortunately, that part passed relatively quickly and I napped out. The feeling that someone was poking my foot with an ice pick eventually faded. My heel is still swollen, so I hobble a little, but it's not gaw-dawful anymore.

Of course (PET TOPIC ON-NESS ACHIEVED) my little fuzzy yellow buddy Charlie came in to sleep with me. Such a great kitteh! Likes to lick my hand (or whatever bare skin is handy), and likes to stretch out a paw to touch me - and only once nailed me in the back today. Cats! Like wasps, they can't help it.

117 The good thing about vets is you can shop around and compare prices. Most vets have a price sheet and can at least estimate what you're looking at. When I worked at the vet, we knew exactly where we fell as far as price level with other vets in the area. We were in the sweet spot. Not too cheap (signs of a struggling or crappy vet) and not to pricey (signs of liberal yuppies taking over your neighborhood.) If you aren't happy with the cost, make some calls. Vets will give prices, unlike people doctors.

123 #3 kid just left. After five years, he finally picked up his amps and miscellaneous stuff (filled his truck). He tried to go through the garage, but could only take his ladders and nothing else. My only concession was that he finally 'understood' my anger with all four of my darlings -- because each and every one of them claims that there is nothing of theirs in my house or garage.

Once again, I wimped out and let him go home without major healthy guy labor (because grandson is due any day now), but mostly because his dog was spayed yesterday and he wasn't happy leaving her.

Our family dog and cat were ecstatic to see him.

grammie, you know, that's true. But I also think that if the level of personal care is there, price isn't so much an issue. My vet clinic moved to a larger, newer facility, and the best vet left to go work in some small, low-cost clinic. She was so awesome in her care for all of our pets, I can't begin to say. Just wonderful.

The new place has a lot of new people - vets, technicians, office staff who are perfectly adequate, but the personal touch is gone. They still have some of the same vets and old staff, but it's changed. It's all about the business now, you know?

She is not in pain and still scampers about like a kitten.

Fortunately, with diet and supplements, I may be able to give her another five years of being the most spoiled cat on the planet. I have to focus on enjoying her now and not grieve too much in advance. Crap, it got awfully dusty in here.

143 Butch and Peaches - Delurking to suggest that you have your vet teach you how to give your kitties subcutaneous (sub-Q) fluids. You've probably watched the vet tech do it before--Ringer's solution, hose, needle. If you can do it, you'll extend your cats' lives and maintain a higher quality of life for them. I've done it for 4 cats now. It's not as scary as it sounds, and the cats do get used to it.

I think part of the difference is, dare I say this, due to corporate shenanigans. In my area, a surprisingly large number of the formerly private vet practices have been bought up by VCA (Vet Clinics of America, NASDAQ:WOOF). Needless to say, the corporate culture was soon transferred to these smaller clinics.

151 VCA sucks donkey bawls. And even the donkeys are not happy about it. Find an independent vet, they're everywhere.

152 138 Yeah, we're in the same boat with our calico Clarissa who showed up on death's door, abandoned and malnourished. Oh, and as it turns out, feline leukemia. She's been nonsymptomatic for about four years, but now she's going fast. Fortunately our cats are vaccinnated and the older ones are fine, but we did lose a kitten before we found out about the leukemia.

She has a few weeks left, tops, so,we're giving her the affection and comfort we can before we have to do the necessary.

153 The vet will euthanize at home, so Obie won't have to go thru the stress of a visit to the office.

Butch, that's what my sister and bil did for their beloved golden retriever, Dutchess. Cancer. My bil had to come to grips with her being at the end of the road for treatment and end her suffering - he loved that dog so much. They choose to do it at home, which I must say, from their experience, sounded like the best thing to do.
They also had someone else come and pick her up afterwards for cremation, with her ashes delivered back to them.

If anybody's still here, this is something to learn. Nothing will kill a pet faster than dehydration.

155 200$ later Cecil is back from the vet, thoroughly traumatized. Its as hard on me as it is on kitty. Luckily, our vet is a sweet Thai woman who is incredibly sweet and gentle, and understanding that all our cats are former ferals, and treats them gently. They usually have to get shots instead of pills or liquid (theres not enough band aids in the world for medicating ferals that way) but antibiotic shots cost more.

But when your big crybaby kitty gets a skin problem, you fork out and make sure he's ok, because pets>nearly everthing else.

156 Lena Dunham: It's understandable. The dog just didn't like them. Who would?

Posted by: Alana at July 08, 2017 08:53 PM (WFVVX)

157 That Lena Dunham thing is just... weird. She invented a terrible back story for the dog just to make herself look/feel better for dumping it. I'm glad the shelter stood up for the dog.

Sometimes pets and people just don't bond; sometimes you just don't have the time and attention to give your pet. It's not shameful or anything. Dogs are pretty needy. Should have gotten a cat to begin with.

158 Great pics of moronpets, as usual.

Sorry to Butch and others who are dealing with illnesses and bad news.

I think Noodle is having some teeth issues (she had bad breath the other day - very unusual) so time for a vet visit.

159 I guess living in the sticks has some benefits besides peace and quiet. Couple of years ago, I came home from work to find my Arab-Appy mare standing in the middle of the pasture, and refusing to put weight on her right forefoot. Called the vet (at home, it was 7 PM) and he was here in 30 minutes, although he lives 20 miles away. Diagnosed as a abscessed hoof, he gave her antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, (both injected) plus more meds to mix with her food, including probiotics to stave off the gruesome poopies caused by the anibiotics. Advised me to get some cheap fruit flavored yogurt at Walmart, to help her digestive system as well. Four days later, she was moving around like nothing was wrong, and a week after the visit she was running. Total bill, including an after-hours farm call, two injections, three meds, and a band-aid (he cut himself with the hoof knife), the total bill was $205.

Vets who go into a large animal practice are NEVER going to get rich!
