Trump Tweets Out Support for Charlie Gard;
Media Refuses to Mention

The media, strangely, chose not to report on this tweet.

Though maybe that's not so strange-- many have entirely embargoed the name "Charlie Gard" from their coverage.

Meanwhile, Francis seems to be disputing his advisory council and now saying he supports Charlie Gard's parents' right to choose what "care" is given to their child.

“He prays for them, wishing that their desire to accompany and care for their own child to the end will be respected.”

Ed Morrissey notes that the word Crux (the magazine that was quoted from) translated as "care for" is better translated as "treat," as in "medically treat:"

Veteran Vatican reporter Francis X. Rocca translates it into a more explicit reference to “treat” the baby from the official Italian-language statement..

"Treat" might be the better translation -- wordreference.com lists the first definition of the word in question (curare) as "nurse," and then "take care of." Obviously you can see the word "cure" lurking around in there.

I wouldn't get too hopeful that Francis is having a general change of heart on his liberal instincts -- he just refused to renew the term of service of a conservative Cardinal.

Hard choices like that are always required in conditions where the supply isn't infinite. However, it became another question entirely when they tried to tell the parents that they couldn't bring him to the States, when someone else was paying.

They mixed politics and medicine, and it has blown up in their faces. The only solution to problems like this is humility and the separation of politics and medicine. They failed on both counts.

As long as American tax dollars aren't involved in any way, but I don't see how that's possible if they're using American facilities.

Besides, if the Brits were willing to tell a family that they couldn't take the child to the States, it's unlikely that they'll let American doctors do the procedure there. It is a JOINT Air Base we're talking about, not sovereign territory like an Embassy.

Way simpler and cheaper to just fly them to the US.

The parents can pay for the treatment, I wouldn't object to a few plane tickets from the US govt.

I wouldn't even object to a US helicopter flying them straight from the hospital to the airport. It'd be expensive, but good training (urban landing and traffic), and great publicity.

The US hospital would be a better place to treat, anyway, and they've already made contacts and are better prepared for it. It's not a boo-boo, it's a severe genetic disorder.

Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at July 03, 2017 04:38 PM (wB8Tg)

62 As I understand it the British health service doesn't want to spend the resources keeping the kid alive for as long as it would take to transfer him to the USA. Plus, I suspect there are a lot of docs there saying "waste of time, don't put the parents through this."

But doing stuff like saying "we'll allow you more time with your child" that's just ... wrong on every level.

Infant mortality is one of the most glaring examples. Our statistics include all babies. Everyone else jukes their stats by not counting babies below a certain birthweight, or sometimes IIRC those that die within a short time from birth.

This is the other point that never got put forth adequately in my opinion. Furthermore, even if the treatment doesn't work, the information about learned about the treatment might save many other lives in the future, and rather than the child "dying passively with dignity", the child might die actively fighting to pull through from an experimental cure.

I can respect that viewpoint. I'll offer another one: If he was forced out under the threat of death, he had the choice to accept martyrdom like our first pope, Peter, did and many of the early ones did. Thankfully, I won't get to be the ultimate judge of his decision bc I'm not sure that I would have accepted the alternative I just suggested. But it's what Chrust asks of us all. Of course, we were created with the gift of free will so our final fate will be determined by how we exercised our free will and what choices we made.

The practical side of me gets that there's no chance. But the parent side gets that if there's a 0.00000000001% chance for your baby, you fucking take it because that is your baby.

174 I can respect that viewpoint.

I'll never forget the night when my dad and I were drinking scotch and smoking cigarettes on the patio, and he told me that he liked me, as a person.
I always knew he loved me, even if he didn't understand what I was up to (any more than I did). But it meant the world to me that he liked me, too, because I had so much respect for him.

You and I pay -- out of our several-trillion-dollar military budget.

Right now, all around the world, the US military is treating innumerable third-worlders for free, as part of humanitarian missions. It's actually most fo what the military does these days -- war-style shooting engagements take uop less time and money than "helpful" interventions (building hospitals Afghanistan, treating ebola patients in Africa, helping tsunami victims in Asia, etc. etc.).

Spending a couple thou on a quick mission to save a child would be about 0.0000001% of our annual humanitarian budget.

363 "So car experts, what's a fair price to replace brake pads and resurface rotors on an old minivan?"

Depends upon make and model.

On rotors, I'd ask if the guy on the shop floor measured the thickness, and also ask what the factory spec is for minimum thickness.

In a lot of shops, cynically enough, "rotor resurfacing" often means leaving them totally alone and charging the customer for work, because the rotors are actually fine.

However, even in a shop that does do a resurfacing, on a disk that has surface issues requiring same, bear in mind that what's being done is to machine metal off of the brake disk, making it that much thinner.

And if the disk is already close to minimums, all it's doing is expensively hastening the day when it warps from being too thin, and you're back in the shop writing another check.

If you know for sure how many miles you've got on the disks, and it's a big number, or if you're hard on brakes, I'd ask to quote a full disk replacement v. resurfacing. I've seen that be a smaller number!

Some bog-standard maint tasks such as brakes, alignments, oil and trans fluid changes, and such can turn out to be attractively priced at a dealership service bay, with coupons. Check dealership Web sites.

It's a loss leader to get people in to hopefully sell them more expensive stuff once they are on the premises.

I've gone that route on vehicles I've owned, esp. if still under factory warranty. I would never pay full list for routine maintenance at a dealership, though.

I do have to say that my divorce was remarkably civil. My Ex had inherited some substantial family coin, so we agreed to leave each others individual assets alone and split the sale of the house and our one joint investment account.

We also put our daughter first, which was nice.

Let me guess...you're "angry" "controlling" and "disruptive" for trying to keep your kids from being malnourished. Am I close?

Yep. And delusional for bringing up the domestic violence facts she admitted in court. And even though I've never been violent nor have a history of violence, her lawyer actually framed a question to where is justified in her fear of me because of the fact that she was violent towards me in the past.

400 "Gettysburg" in honor of July 4th.

Channel or Netflix?

Of course it is. I don't the comments from morons about women in a personal way bc I understand what is causing them. It's still hard to read sometimes when they take over a thread. I just leave when it gets to be too much for me to read. I feel bad for all you guys and what you've had to go through with bad women.

402 I can't even imagine what that kids parents are going through. If ever there were a reason to hang bureaucrats and politicians from lamp posts, that'd be it.

403 Could I talk you into Nashville? I mean, you
already have the title. Wouldn't even have to change the monogram on
your luggage.

I could be amenable to Nashville. And after all, we do having matching titles.

409 387 BTW... I know some have said there's a lot of woman bashing going on lately due to child/divorce issues.

Men do get screwed over in divorces and especially in regards to children. Not all the time, but.. a lot. And it's not right.

I hope all the guys out there that have had that experience know that there are decent females out there who know that you're an integral part of your child's life and don't want to see you estranged from your child via lawfare.

It's only white women under 40 who are infected with the mind virus

I blame feminism, white knights, and social media.

But yes I'd give a limb for a decent woman in my life since I obviously can't have my sons in my life. I'd love to move closer to home, work on myself, and get set up with a good woman through family contacts. I know they exist.

410 You're probably too young for me, Widespread Pepe. Practically everyone is, except for the ones who are too old for me.

412 This Vatican never would have objected in the first place if it was Raul Castro seeking heroic medical treatment.

What's the worse-case scenario? The child dies anyway? No; the worst-case is that the Blob-ocracy is no longer in control. That is their nightmare scenario.

As for the Professional Liar Media; they are uninterested in a Trump tweet that's not about them. CNN was sponsoring the Trump/Caesar Assassination Play and the New York Times gave directions to the baseball field to the Democrat assassin, plus helpful tips about the security detail.

But Trump is Quashing Dissent(tm).

Dirtbag Liars.

I like Trump more every day.

I either need older or generation Z, both of those groups are conservative.

At this point a night of spooning, watching a couple of movies, and falling asleep and waking up to cook breakfast would be like losing a second virginity for me.

414 This little boy's story is breaking my heart. My
youngest is about the same age, and I can tell you in deadly seriousness
that if some bureaucrat tried to tell me I couldn't pursue a treatment
he needed, I would kill them. And I don't mean that metaphorically. I
mean that I would literally murder that person. With no remorse.

The practical side of me gets that there's no chance. But the parent
side gets that if there's a 0.00000000001% chance for your baby, you
fucking take it because that is your baby.

415 So car experts, what's a fair price to replace brake pads and resurface rotors on an old minivan?

Posted by: @votermom @vm pimping great books usually free or sale at July 03, 2017 05:59 PM (hMwEB)

Take your minivan to O'Reiley's Auto Parts, or NAPA, or Auto Zone, or Advanced Auto Parts. Pick any two, but DO get quotes from two or more.

Pads, Rotors and Fluid. Get the parts prices.

Then, ask 'em for a referral to an independent, local mechanic of good repute. Get one such referral from each parts store, if you have the time.

Get a quote for the labor only, to 'em to spin the wrenches so as to effect the removal of the old parts, and the installation of the new bits you'd bought over the counter.

My mechanic does 'em for me at the price of only $20 per corner. Because it only takes him about fifteen minutes per corner, start to finish.

It would cost a LOT more to get rotors turned and resurfaced. That's because each rotor is going to be on the lathe for another ten or fifteen minutes each, not counting the labor to mount each disc to the lathe, measure the remaining thickness, test for runout to be within tolerances, etc.

Those Made in China brake rotors the auto parts stores sell, seem to work just fine for me. YMMV.

Good luck to you, ma'am!

417 Is this that British family that raised 1.4 million pounds to get their seriously ill baby treated by American doctors, only to have the British courts and the EU courts work together to say, "No! We can't save your baby, so we can't let someone else save it, either, because that would make our socialist healthcare program look bad"?

I'm glad to see the Pope and President Trump get involved in this!

Good luck to that family, and I hope their baby ends up living to be 100 years old!
