Oh, Canada!

Well, today is July 1, known to our brothers to the north as Canada Day, the equivalent of our Fourth of July. This year is the 150th anniversary of the confederation, the day on which the Dominion of Canada was formed.

The relationship between the United States and Canada is a remarkable one. We truly are brothers from the same mother, after all, when we won our independence from Britain in 1781, we did not execute the loyalists, but instead allowed them to leave. Most of them went to what would become Canada, meaning that our blood is their blood. We demanded to become citizens, they opted to remain subjects (a small but crucial distinction which echos in our national characters to this day), but still and all, we ARE from the same stock.

Nevermind that today they are governed by an empty-headed progressive pretty boy (and really, is FluffyHair von FancySuit anything more than a cheap knock-off of our own SCOAMF?). Forget that their disastrous health system is being held up as something for us to emulate. Ignore the fact that they can be more socialist than we are because we are paying the freight for their defense (you might say that we're standing on guard for thee *wink*). These are simply merely the intra-familial differences that are well know to any human being. Canadians are our brothers, with ties forged not only of a common blood, but in the crucible of conflict and iron and death. Personally, I'm awfully glad to have them next door, that's one border we don't have to watch too closely, we know they've got our back. One day soon the blessings of liberty will be restored fully to both of our great nations, but right now, today, we Americans raise our drinks to you, Canada, and cheerfully shout:

HAPPY 150TH CANADA! MANY HAPPY RETURNS, EH?

9 I'll note that Canadians are a great ally. They punched well above their own weight in both WWI and WWII. They were very helpful in Iran in 1981.

Plus, we invaded them in the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, and got our asses kicked each time.

13 Benedict Arnold's greatest moments were getting his ass kicked in Quebec and running a fighting retreat.
Building and fighting a fleet on Lake Champlain was everything a delaying action in the face of overwhelming force could be.

Just think if Arnold was awarded command over Gates. And praised like Gates, since Arnold made victory at Saratoga possible.

The battle of Camden and the entire southern strategy of the British would have had much different results with Arnold in command, IMHO.

I also noticed that petty commercial fraud and deception are more common up there.

Wierddave,

Where in the Northwest Territories?

Anyway your post is spot on.

My favorite place in the world is Quebec City. I think of it as New France in the sense that it has colonial French architecture and culture but a breezy informal New World attitude.

Whitehorse is interesting as well. Don't know of any other place in the world that has a bar where you can have a drink (i.e. sourtoe cocktail) with an amputated toe in the glass.

This is a family reunion for my wife's side of the family. They're all a bunch of rural folks- farmers and oil patch workers, welders and mechanic types. I told them that the only difference between this get-together and one down in the states is that down there, we'd have been shooting guns by now. ( We would too. Everyone's camped right by the Hay River, with huge clay bluffs on the other side. You could shoot all day and never worry about where the rounds were going, I've rarely seen a better natural shooting range)

Peaceful?! The Canadian government *slaughtered* the Eskimo tribes' dogs and *forced* them to use snowmobiles (and this was relatively recently). On the surface this may not sound bad, but a snowmobile can't be fed fish so it's range is very constricted compared to a dog team.

Admittedly, I only found out about that in the last few years so, yeah, the crap we were taught about the moral superiority of the Canadian government is just that. And you are correct that the proof is in the outcome (and this comes from someone who agrees that many tribal practices *needed* to be stopped. I remember, back in the early '80's, visiting an Eskimo Dog rescue shelter in Yellowknife, where the operator was trying to preserve sled dogs abandoned by the natives. Indians and Inuit took to the snow machines like a duck to water. Greatly extended their hunting range, and also reduced the amount of hunting they had to do, since no longer a dog team to feed.

103 Over the years, I've tried to find cases where Canadian actors have played POTUS in movies, plays and TV shows. It's all part of the insidious plot to take over the US by culturally appropriating you without you knowing it. Those that come to mind are:

Alexander Knox in Wilson and You Only Live Twice.

Gordon Pinsent in Colossus the Forbin Project.

Bruce Greenwood in 13 Days and National Treasure 2

And of course, Raymond Massey basically own the part of Abraham Lincoln.

Watch out for reporters that have quietly invaded the USA. I don't want to make you paranoid. Just sayin'.

Posted by: Les Kinetic

I once had breakfast at the original Tim Horton's in Cochran, Ontario.

They had a big plaque on the wall, telling the Tim Horton's story.
Tim was a hockey player (of course) and started the store when his hockey career was over.
Started to be a success, got drunk one night and killed himself in a car wreck.
In many ways, this is the story of a lot of Canadians, especially the Indians.
My late uncle used to own an island with a cottage up in Lake Huron. He would make jokes about all the drunken Indian car wrecks up there, and all the taxis that existed in such a small town (to take all the drunken Indians home).

As a kid I thought a store at the end of a dock was the coolest thing ever. Pull the boat up to the pumps, gas up, then pull around to the boat "parking lot" and hit the store for supplies. Then fish off the dock while scarfing sel et vinaigre chips. Inside it looks too much like a modern convenience store rather than the olde-timey general store it used to be, but at least it looks the same outside:

192 One can never actually live in the present.

Whatever causes a sound, you hear the sound delayed.

Even light, speedy as it is, is nanoseconds away from your perceiving orbs.

And then there's the delay in processing to become aware of what your senses are telling you.

It's like, no matter how many clothes you wash, when you strip off at the end of the day, there's still more laundry.

The present is a place we head toward, but we really only experience life delayed slightly.

197 NaCly Dog--actually there *was* a third Canada/US conflict, the Pig War in 1859. Hardly anyone outside of a few OCD military historians and people who grew up around the San Juan islands in Washington State know about it. (My theory is everybody was so embarrassed by the sheer lameness part of the armistice agreement was Don't Mention The War). Nobody got shot. No big battles. It was all a boundary dispute, that got mediated by the Kaiser. But yes, a real declared war with all the forms filled out.

The Pig War got its name from the inciting act, an unprovoked incursion by Canadian pigs on a peaceful potato farm. The American farmer defended his precious potato seedlings with lethal force (BBQ to follow) and the Canadian pig owner protested that the pigs dindu nuffin and were turning their lives around.

Obligatory historical note: Pickett of Pickett's Charge was up here during this incident. Good luck charging anything in the PNW, we've got serious glacial hills all over the place.

Too true. Visiting Juno Beach was very moving and I would love to visit the memorial at Vimy. Most people don't know that the Battle of the Atlantic was very much a Canadian war. At the end of WWII, Canada had the 3rd largest navy in the world. They always punched above their weight until Lester Pearson and then Justin's dad became PM. After that, they concentrated on UN peacekeeping (which accomplished very little). That's when the NATO contributions slacked off. However under Harper, Canada did make a big contribution in Afghanistan. I still have hopes that my native land can start to remember its gloried history. A key person contributing to that is Mark Steyn.

238 One can never actually live in the present.

Which is to say, I caught up on comments. Now what? Quit reading and do other things, I guess.

325 Justin Trudeau is much worse than Barky, IMHO. I recommend this video with Stefan Molyneux and Ezra Levant for the whole ugly story:

326 What the heck is going on in Little Rock?

327 My great great...grandfather, Pader Rupert and his wife Catherine Little Fawn (Mohawk Indian from the Schoharie valley in NY) took four of their five sons to Canada after the American revolution. Pader, from Germany, and his sons fought for the British. The remaining son chose to stay and became a pioneer, heading to the Ohio River Valley. Many of the the Ruperts in the Midwest, where I now live, are descendant from that son. I am technically only a third generation American, as my father's dad was born in Cornwall Ontario.

329 "Forget that their disastrous health system is being held up as something for us to emulate."

It is estimated that in 2030, 80% of the budget of the Province of Ontario will go to medical care. That's before it goes to other silliness like education, law enforcement, infrastructure, and much else besides. I expect that even before that point, their Ontario Consent and Capacity Board will be very busy. And efforts are being made to soften up Canadian attitudes to legalized murder. In 2013-2014 Maclean's ran a series of articles about euthanasia to that effect.

330 What in God's name are you on about? Canadians aren't our brothers. They're more like nasty, stupid mothers-in-law. They are smug, complacent and unintelligent. They are, at the end of the day, Commie Canucks. Don't ever say they are close relations.

331 Most every Canadian I've met (with two exceptions, both Torontonians) were awesome people. My most memorable was in 1989 in Fort Lauderdale, FL during Spring Break debauchery. There was this guy staggering around the outdoor pool bar drinking out of a pitcher of beer--not a cup, the pitcher. Turns out, after talking to him a bit, he told us he was from Yellowknife, NT and had DRIVEN down to Fort Lauderdale to see some 'Murrican college boobies. Really nice guy whose most memorable line was "I really love you guys down here, but you make some shitty beer, eh?"

The Torontonians were a husband-and-wife combo of tow-truck drivers who were vacationing in St. Pete Beach when I was down there one year. Grumpy, nasty, surly, just totally unfriendly to everyone and everything around them. I guess even Canada has to have a couple of people like that.

332 Oh. And Canada has given us The Tragically Hip. That makes up for a huge world of sins.

333 Unfortunately, they also gave us Toledo, OH.

Frick them with a rusty fork...
