SecDef Mattis: Trump' Blunt Warning to Assad Stopped Him From Launching Another Poison Gas Attack

Gotta be tough.

ABOARD A U.S. MILITARY AIRCRAFT — Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Wednesday that the U.S. warning to Syria not to conduct a chemical attack on its own people appears to have been taken seriously by the Bashar Assad regime.

"They didn't do it," Mattis told reporters on his plane as they flew from Germany to Belgium. "It appears they took the warning seriously."

Mattis would not confirm or discuss on-the-record statements by a Pentagon spokesman that the U.S. had observed the movement of chemical munitions at the Shayrat airfield, the same airfield from which a Syrian warplane dropped deadly sarin nerve gas on civilians April 4. Navy warships launched a cruise missile attack on the air base later that week, which destroyed several aircraft.

Maybe they didn't do it now because Trump was accusing them before they even did it. Maybe if that sort of pre-emptive condemnation doesn't come the next time they start loading the poison gas bombs on to the planes, they will go ahead and do it, and then just say The Jews Must Have Done It.

3 Not sure I'm big on getting involved in Syria, but this is the sort of approach that's necessary when dealing with these sorts of people. It reminds me of when people asked Castro why he wasn't jamming Radio Free Cuba (Marti) in the 1980s. Castro's response was reportedly, "if I did, the old man [Reagan] would bomb me" . . .

14 You know the left and CNN (but I repeat myself) are just itching to say that Trump made up the threat in order to claim that he made it go away.

This is the game plan they've been following with the globull warming scam from the start, and they know it well. But they don't know how to attack Mattis, who gives the story credibility - so they'll just try to pretend it didn't happen.

At the Q&A afterward, a young AF officer gushed "You're a personal hero of mine, sir!" and he replied "Son, ya got low standards!".

Another serviceman asked to shake his hand and Mattis said something like "No, it'll be bad for your career because everyone will think you're an ass-kisser!" but he then jumped down off the stage and went over to shake the guy's hand.

53 You all should look more at that supposed helicopter/terrorist/supposed coup attempt in Venezuela yesterday.

Here's some curious things about that one: The helicopter buzzed their Supreme Court building and hung around a long time, but none of the security forces on the ground ever got around to actually shooting at it. Never launched any aircraft to drive it away, either.

Meanwhile, although the helicopter displayed a banner and made a big public spectacle, they managed to be very careful and did not do *any* actual harm to any government operatives or government property.

And finally, when the helicopter left, no one followed it, and everyone on it got away. The government claims to have found the helicopter a few hours later, but everyone on it had disappeared and no one saw it land. In fact, no one say nuttin' about the entire thing.

And now Maduro is saying that this was a "coup" that is going to justify a new military crackdown. Hmmmmm.

97 The Homeland Security Department is demanding that airlines around the world step up security measures for international flights bound for the United States or face the possibility of a total electronics ban for planes.

Compliance with the new rules could lead to the lifting of a ban on laptops and other large electronics already in place for airlines flying to the United States from 10 airports in the Middle East and Africa. It could also stave off a much-discussed expansion of the ban to flights from Europe.

Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly announced the rollout of the new rules Wednesday.

The changes will be phased in over time and include enhanced passenger vetting, explosives detection and efforts to root out insider threats to airlines.

"Security is my No. 1 concern," Kelly said during a speech at the Center for a New American Security. "Our enemies are adaptive and we have to adapt as well."

We have rescued a lot of dogs over the years. Once we picked up two puppies, sisters. In a household with 6 other dogs, they always stuck together. When Lucy died of lymphoma, the personality of Lily changed drastically (much quieter), and she became very attached to me. But she was OK. Sadly, she also contracted lymphoma two years later, and died a year after that, almost three years to the day from her sister's passing.

All of which is a long way of saying (1) Cinnamon will probably notice, (2) be prepared to become the focus of her attachment (if she was inclined to be attached to her sister before) and (3) lymphoma sucks.

Oh yeah, another member of the audience (pinch-faced scold type) asked Mattis if the new administration's rabid nationalism was alienating our allies. He replied on the contrary, there seemed to be an improvement in relations. He was very eloquent in making a case for proceeding from a position of strength and was unabashed in stating that the American experiment is a precious and rare thing that deserves to be preserved and protected.

See, I wanted to observe the mythical Mattis that sips from a skull chalice, not this mature individual who patiently and skillfully parries with his prey.

198 So sorry about your kitty, skip.

We planted a tree at the grave of our kitty Whitefang. Other kitties would join him later (we live on a busy road). The tree is now a beatiful Norway maple; we call it the Whitefang tree. A few years a go a wind shear stripped about a third of the tree, but it has since filled in and is still a beautiful tree.

This might seem minor, but I believe the press has been the biggest enemy of freedom. How they've been able to shape the weak minded and push a one sided agenda has been criminal. I mean that sincerely. Nobody other than Trump could have exposed this. Politicians like Rubio, Romney etc. etc. always wanted to play nice with these fucks thinking it would help them. They never grasped that they are an enemy. If they were actual reporters, that's one thing. They've been disguising themselves as journalists for years and I could give two shits if their feelings are hurt. Eff them.

Exactly. I call this the "minefield scenario."

If you know exactly where the minefield begins, you can dance right up next to it with impunity.

But if you're not so sure ... better give it a wide berth. A VERY wide berth.

In short, you are not controlled by the minefield then, but by your FEAR of the minefield, and your UNCERTAINTY of exactly where it is. To be safe, you err on the side of doing what the other side wanted in the first place.

In a management position you NEVER give your problem children a program: "if you do X, I'll do Y."

They might decide Y isn't so bad, and/or be able to take steps preemptively to mitigate the impact of Y.

Much better: to give them to understand - preferably non-verbally - "if you do X, you're not going to like what happens next."

Let their imaginations do the work.

After all my horses have run away I am considering closing the barn door.

292 "The reaction by Saudi Arabia to President Trump was rather interesting. After his speech to 50 Muslim-majority national leaders, the Saudi
press referred to President Trump as a 'Servant of God.' On top of that,
he got an enthusiast greeting by the King."

The Saudis are in *way* over their heads in dealing with the Yemenis. They've gotten mauled in every major and minor engagement. Their high-tech kit has availed them naught against barefoot insurgents. There's a real risk of loss of Saudi sovereign soil. They desperately need American military help.

Note also that with regard to the "servant of God" rhetoric, in a Muslim culture, dhimmi slaves are still serving Allah's will so long as those dhimmis are doing what their Muslim slavemasters desire.

Some cynical old Mideast hands pointed out that if you look at who was participating in the ceremonial "sword dance" staged by the Saudis, alongside Trump and Tillerson and company, it was all anonymous powerless household-help types dancing alongside the Americans.

None of the House of Saud themselves stood up. They watched from the sidelines with the proverbial hooded eyes.

Symbolism. Semiotics. Doing their bidding.

294 31 Plus by giving Assad credit for not being a CA using douche bag, President Trump keeps the door open to use the Syrian tin horn as a lackey down the road should the opportunity arise.

Refreshing having an adult again in the White House.

Can you dig it?
Posted by: Hairyback Guy at June 28, 2017 08:39 PM (5VlCp)

The take by Sundance at The Conservative Treehouse is that Trump was sending a message not just to Assad, who gets some brownie points by not attacking with chems, but to McCain and his fellow ISIS travelers that a false flag won't get us in deeper. It also gives Assad some motivation to attack ISIS rather than keep them in play a a way to keep the game going.

Interesting that this could be another bank shot from Trump to maximize his position against all players, foreign and domestic.

Concur.... we are trusting the same Intelligence types who are leaking crap all over Washington... to know when they are 'moving chemical weapons' around an air base...

Like the Syrians do not know they are under observation from Satellite?

Add in it would be terminally stupid of the Russians to allow this??? KNOWING they are being watched?

And to kill a few civilians?

Strategically the whole thing would make no sense from their perspective.

Very sad. But typical. Almost every major Hollywood film and TV production since the 60s has inserted a black character or two due to political correctness "requirements." Hogan's Heroes is one of the earliest examples. But now that I think a moment - wasn't the M*A*S*H TV series awfully Caucasian? What happened there, Mr. Alda? IIRC, in the movie, Fred "The Hammer" Williamson played a black surgeon. Maybe my memory is bad on both counts.

It's not like it was ever proven that the Syrian government ever did any of the other chemical attacks. So far all the actual evidence of those attacks point toward the so called "moderate rebels" and ISIS.

325 "how they kill each other in Syria"

This is a proxy war with Iran and Turkey.

Iran and Turkey are kept from doing greater mischief if the Kurds are a threat to them. Remember Sadam and the no-fly-zone. Apparently the Kurds kick Arab, Ottoman, and Persian asses real well. That is why the preferred weapon of their enemies is poison gas dropped from an airplane.

The reason we aren't hearing much about Israel is because the war front is now in Syria. Don't know much about the Kurds. I'm thinking they have 1776-North-America style leaders because they seem to be doing quite a lot with very little.
