Quotes of The Day

Quote I

The trend of opinion among eugenists is that we must make marriage more difficult. Certainly no one who is not a desirable parent should be permitted to produce progeny. Nikola Tesla

Quote II

If you think nobody cares about you, try missing a couple of payments. Steven Wright

Quote III

I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that his justice cannot sleep forever. Thomas Jefferson

Quote IV

Why has the Democratic Party become so arrogantly detached from ordinary Americans? Though they claim to speak for the poor and dispossessed, Democrats have increasingly become the party of an upper-middle-class professional elite, top-heavy with journalists, academics and lawyers. Camille Paglia

*****

Guess what will be 200 years old? No, not your Grandmother's fruit cake. The Erie Canal.

But next Tuesday will also mark another anniversary of surpassing historical importance to this country. For it was on July 4th, 1817, 200 years ago, that the first shovelful of dirt was dug and the construction of the Erie Canal began. Finished eight years later (ahead of schedule and under budget) it united the east coast with the fast-growing trans-Appalachian west.

A certain former U.S. President would say something to that effect you didn't build that. Or we are not an exceptional country. The ONT says "F" off.

*****

The Democrats have been losing elections steadily since 2008. Liberals still don't need to win elections to get what they want.

Nevertheless, as the recent war on President Trump and the more distant -- but certainly recent enough -- debate on marriage reveal, U.S. liberals don’t necessarily need to win elections to further their leftist agenda. In fact, as most any sentient political observer of the American scene is aware, arguably the sturdiest plank of the Democratic platform -- abortion -- became legal in America, not because of what occurred at the ballot box, but because of the tragically foolish decision of seven unelected justices of the U.S. Supreme Court. As the block (now lifted) on the so-called “travel ban,” the seemingly never-ending Trump-Russia collusion farce, and the Trump obstruction-of-justice myth prove, if the electorate won’t cooperate, the American left well knows that it can almost always rely on the cooperation of the courts and the mainstream media.

*****

The passing of the torch? Is Nancy Pelosi on her way out?

The Pelosi factor has been a drag on Democrats in all four of the special elections the party has lost since Trump’s November triumph.

Prediction: Democrats will not go into the 2018 Congressional elections with San Fran Nan as the party’s face and future. No way. As President Kennedy said, “Sometimes party loyalty asks too much.”

Crime Politics pays. Late phase capitalism.

In one of histories great ironies, the English speaking world went to war with fascism and defeated them on the battlefield, but ended up adopting most of the fascists socio-economic polices. Similarly the US government went to war with the mob, but is now embracing the same ethos as those long vanquished gangsters. Maybe like the oxpecker, the tiny bird that lives off rhinos, human society will always have a quasi-criminal class that lives off the people at the pleasure of the people in charge.

*****

Sarah Palin is in the news again. Palin suing the NY Times in Federal Court.

The lawsuit has to do with an editorial the NYT ran on June 14 that falsely smeared Palin as inciting the 2011 shooting of Democratic Rep. Gabby Giffords by a mentally ill man. There is no evidence to support the NYT’s implication that Palin played a role in inciting the Giffords shooting.

The ONT hope she wins and wins big.

A comforting thought, 600 million legally owned guns in the U.S.A.?

China. Green energy. Chinese province runs on green energy for 7 days.

And it seems they did just that. For seven continuous days, over 5 million citizens living in the Qinghai Province in northwest China survived on 100 percent renewable energy, according to the State-run Xinhua News Agency.

The ONT is skeptical, "State-run news" if they are anything like CNN FNN (Fake News Network)...............

*****

Bernie Sanders, not happy to be in this spot light.

Windows 10? Keep it clean. Not content to leave well enough alone Bill Gates is out to screw up hamburgers.

The Bill Gates-backed vegetarian burger is coming to a national fast food chain.

The ONT Musical Interlude

June 28, 1975, The Eagles started a five-week run at No.1 on the US album chart with their fourth studio album 'One Of These Nights'. The album which became their breakthrough album released three US Top 10 singles, 'Lyin' Eyes', (which won a Grammy), 'Take It To The Limit' and the title track. via thisdayinmusic.com

June 28, 1997, The Pink Floyd album The Dark Side of The Moon spent its 1056th week on the US album chart. It was rumoured at the time that if the album was played while watching The Wizard of Oz movie, and started exactly when the MGM lion roared the third time during the movie's intro, very interesting connections could be made between the two. via thisdayinmusic.com

The next time someone from the Left says there is no such thing as voter fraud. Introduce them to Andrew J. Spieles of Harrisonburg, Virginia.

A student at James Madison University who was working for a political organization affiliated with the Democratic party was sentenced to go to prison for at least 100 days after he pleaded guilty to registering dead people to vote.

Andrew J. Spieles of Harrisonburg, Virginia entered his plea on Monday in federal court. He had been working for the group Harrisonburg Votes last summer. A U.S. Attorney’s Office spokesperson said, “In July 2016 Spieles’ job was to register as many voters as possible and reported to Democratic Campaign headquarters in Harrisonburg.”

The ONT enjoys Mark Steyn. Cutting and funny as hell, Steyn comments on PM Trudeau of Canada.

When I first heard that Justin Trudeau had marched in the Toronto Pride Parade wearing Ramadan socks, my first reaction was that that was a bit under-dressed even for him. My mistake. It turns out the Prime Minister wasn't wearing just his Ramadan socks but also shirt and trousers.

Which, on reflection, is a bit boringly overdressed. Perhaps for next year's parade he could wear a niqab with cutaway buttocks and a crescent tramp stamp. Just trying to be inclusive here.

There are no words.

When I was watching "The Long Ships", which is just a fun adventure flick about a bunch of Vikings (a murder of Vikings?) pressed into service by a Moorish prince to help him find a huge golden bell, I was thinking how nice it was when, pre globalism, movies were made to appeal to your standard Western filmgoer and you didn't have to worry about twitterstorms erupting from easily offended types.

See the Daily Caller, Politco writer Anna Palmer made a drunken she-ass of herself at the Four Seasons Hotel. She was drunk off her ass, and noticed some Tumpsters, including a Breitbart editor and some others.

She stumbled over to their table and launched into a drunken, slurring, unintelligible rant at them.

21 Politico puts out an article about Tillerson reportedly lashing out at Priebus and Kushner. Of course, it's all based on anonymous sources, and it reads like Resistance fanfic written by Ben Rhodes. There's a whole paragraph describing Tillerson's frustrations as if he's a character being described by a narrator.
And of course, it's immediately accepted as a legit story, even by normally reputable conservatives.
It's not like multiple MSM outlets have just been caught pushing libelous stories in the past week or anything.

It will launch in eight of BurgerFi's 101 locations — Malibu, New York City, Poughkeepsie, NY; Philadelphia; Coral Springs, Florida; Coral Gables, Florida; and two stores in Delray Beach, Florida — according to The New York Times.

108 Cosmic: been a while since someone asked me that. :-)

qdp = quality desktop publishing. At-home business I tried to start up a million years ago (1994).

This was before I knew about domain names. My idea was that all my employees, if I ever had any, would via email all be "qdpsomething." qdpjim, qdpsara, etc etc.

The business never took off, but I've since found that the moniker "qdp":

- can stand for a lot of things;

- is pretty unique, and I like being known online as qdpsteve;

AND, if you draw q, d, p, just like that, on a sheet of paper, it almost looks like a face, without the eyes and smile. :-)

We assume they are just trying to shoehorn blacks or other minorities into movies. However, I think they are actually that bog stupid about history and mired in their own tropes.

Blacks have always been used by the white man to die for the white man's causes, ergo they MUST have been there.

131 if the electorate won't cooperate, the American left well knows that it can almost always rely on the cooperation of the courts and the mainstream media.

It's Congress' job to protect and defend the Constitution ... and that means that Congress is duty-bound to impeach and unceremoniously throw off the bench federal judges who try to make a mockery of the Constitution or America.

Lifetime appointments must carry with them the strictest obligations and those who violate these even a bit must be immediately removed from the bench. This is what has been missing in our system and this is why the judiciary thinks that it has total power to do any damn thing it likes. It's about time to start pulling the choke collars on these America-hating retard judges and justices.

I was thinking more about directly un-Constitutional decisions but I agree with you that a certain number of reversals ought to spell the definite end of a judge's career. It's impossible for anyone (with a brain) to argue against that. And if we had been doing this before, Sotomayor would have been a name that no one ever heard of.

- Klipsh

- Polk Audio
- JBL (still miss them)
- Acoustic Research (I think this was their name)
- Advent

All of those names were around from at least the early 70's. Cerwin Vega was associated with sound reinforcement, PA's, etc. Polk was a late arrival.

You left out KLH, which was the real break-out bookshelf speaker company of the 60's.

If you're flying in an airplane at the speed of sound and you say something, what happens? :-)

There was a tall tale some used to pull. Some story about an airliner that under some conditions was just under Mach 1. Some little boy runs forward down the center aisle, thus breaking the sound barrier and causing a sonic boom inside the aircraft. Also, set his hair on fire, or something like that.

I'd like to see Bill Nye, cold, being asked to 'splain what's wrong with the above. Cold, now, no looking things up.

One day I was riding a bus, and I sat down next to this beautiful, blonde Chinese girl. I say 'Hello' and she says 'Hello'.

I say, 'What do you mean, you guess?' She said she had just come back from her analyst and he was still unable to help her.
I said, 'What's the problem?' She said, 'I can't tell you, I don't even know you!'
I said, 'Yeah, but sometimes it's good to tell your problems to an absolute stranger on a bus.'
She paused a minute, then said: 'I'm a nymphomaniac and I only get turned on by Jewish Cowboys. By the way, my name is Diane.'
I said, 'Hello, Diane, I'm Bucky Goldstein.'

Another good one: Airplane on treadmill.

If you haven't heard it, the "puzzle" goes like this. Imagine an airplane on a big treadmill, trying to take off. As the plane starts to thrust, you start running the treadmill backwards, trying to compensate for any forward speed it would develop.

Posted by: publius, the Persistent Poperin Pear at June 28, 2017 11:02 PM (8O3HH)

So what? If there's no airflow over the wings there's no lift. Now, if the jet is pointed vertically that's a different story. No need for lift from the wings. But no one has invented a vertical treadmill yet so that puzzle isn't going anywhere.

The jet can be doing Mach 2 on the treadmill (and the treadmill doing mach 2 in the other direction, of course) and the plane isn't going to lift off anywhere because the airspeed over the wings is 0. But the minute you point the jet up a bit it will go ... but that isn't allowed since we're on a horizontal treadmill.

A step backward: Joyce has been diagnosed with cellulitis in her right axilla (armpit). This seems to be a fairly common skin infection; she's on antibiotics to clear it up.

Last Friday, our cousins drove up to visit with her, and on Monday morning her friend Jessica picked her up for an "adventure" at a local park, including horses and a golf cart ride.

And I spoke with her this morning; she sounded quite chipper, and asked for some more word puzzle books (Yay!).

Please pray that she continues on a path toward healing.

[To my fellow Hordelings, thank you all in advance for your prayers and well-wishes for my sister and our family.]

You do understand that wind has to move over a WING to provide lift to the plane (excluding rockets that can lift unaerodynamic objects into the air - though that doesn't change anything in this question because those rockets are directed horizontally)?

The way you are answering your own question you seem to be claiming that wings are totally unnecessary (since you discount lift from the wings, entirely).

You have to go back and rethink this one. Imagine that wings are actually functional parts of the airplane ...

372 Pop,

Not at all. Jet plane. What causes the thrust? The high velocity of hot gases coming out the nozzle of the engine. This pushes the plane forward.

The wheel do not transmit the thrust to get the plane moving, as would a car. A car, with wings, on a treadmill would be different.

The wheels on the airplane have nothing to do with transmitting the thrust to push the plane forward.

It will get to moving relative to the surrounding air, creating air flow over the wing. The wheels will just move much faster, with the treadmill underneath trying to moving backwards.

Not at all.

Posted by: publius, the Persistent Poperin Pear at June 28, 2017 11:21 PM (8O3HH)

For this treadmill test to work, the treadmill would have to be as long as the normal takeoff distance of the aircraft.

An airplane cannot take off from a runway which is moving backwards (like a treadmill) at a speed equal to its normal ground speed during takeoff.

BUSTED
First some small-scale tests were performed with a model airplane on a treadmill and the plane was able to take off. For the large-scale test, the MythBusters used a 400 pound ultralight aircraft with a 2000 foot tarp under it. The tarp was pulled backwards to simulate a moving runway. The ultralight pilot had no trouble taking off. This is because the thrust of the airplane engines acts on the air, not on the ground.

Uh ... NO! It isn't moving anywhere. The treadmill is moving backwards at the exact rate that the plane is being thrust forwards. The plane is not moving. I could be standing on the side with my hand on the wing - as per your setup with the treadmill. That is ZERO movement relative to the ground. Well, tell me what the windspeed is over the wings if the plane, itself, is moving at 0 mph relative to the ground. How far does the plane actually advance, relative to the ground (which is exactly the same as the surrounding air, with no wind)?

An idealized treadmill has no resistance to traction - it has no resistance to horizontal force. Brakes in aircraft are useful at low speed to counter crosswind and slowing down on landing.

Therefore, a treadmill would be like landing on ice.

It does not 'help' but conversely, does not harm.

Because we already know that.

We also know that a plane on wheels will accelerate very similarly (almost identically) on the ground and on a moving treadmill (barring inane things like a treadmill at the speed of light).

Because it thrusts against the air, not the ground.

As it accelerates *against the air*, it gains airspeed, and eventually sufficient lift.

Wheel rpm is irrelevant (at the speeds we're discussing).

Unless you spin the treadmill so fast the wheels explode, the plane easily rolls forward to achieve flight speed.

Because the wheel rpm doesn't matter (within their engineering limits).

Let me try it this way: If the plane is applying forward thrust sufficient for takeoff, you can't apply enough force to the *plane* through rotating the tires to keep it from taking off.

The whole point of the hypothetical posed was that the treadmill moves the plane back as much as the thrust had moved it forward so THE PLANE DOESN'T ROLL ANYWHERE. That is the hypothetical posed. After 10 minutes on the treadmill, the plane is in the same place that it started - i.e. no movement relative to the ground and hence no movement relative to the surrounding air - i.e. no airflow over the wings.

That's true. It's the ma "pushing", but for continuous throwing off of mass, you get the famous rocket thrust equation:

F (thrust) = v * dM/dt,

where v is the exhaust velocity and dM/dt is the rate you're throwing off mass out of the ass end.

469 465 >> Hmm...not strictly true. It is the acceleration of the gases that generate the thrust.

That's true. It's the ma "pushing", but for continuous throwing off of mass, you get the famous rocket thrust equation:

F (thrust) = v * dM/dt,

where v is the exhaust velocity and dM/dt is the rate you're throwing off mass out of the ass end.

So, that's where you think of velocity, which is the terminal velocity of the exhaust, after it has been accelerated.

Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at June 28, 2017 11:41 PM (rZ+mb)

That hypothetical treadmill is the real problem. Is there a treadmill that can roll well over 200 mph, in fact fast enough to smoke the bearings in the wheels before the prop induced airflow lifts the plane into ground effect.

Yeah, the treadmill is the issue, really. But that was the basis of the hypothetical so we were all nice enough to assume its existence and proper operation.

I think the basis of publius' argument is that there is no such treadmill - though he won't come out and say that. His thing with the frictionless wheels was to promote the idea that you just could not move the plane ANYWHERE by moving the treadmill - even with no thrust moving a treadmill under such a plane wouldn't move it at all, hence the theoretical treadmill was just a ruse that we were not supposed to accept from the beginning. I'm not a big fan of things like that. When one proposes something as unlikely as a 100 yard airplane treadmill, having to declare the amazingly unlikely thing impossible (and thereby making the whole question of no use, at all) is just not very ... fun.

Posted by: publius

You're ignoring the initial velocity and mass of the incoming air. Both critical.

In essence, the thrust will be the product of the velocity and mass of the exhaust gas, less the product of the velocity and mass of the incoming gas. It is that difference in velocity that is acceleration.

526 Pop,

This thing goes way back. I remember it back in college, late '80s, and it goes back before that.

Imagine the big treadmill, and you start moving it before you fire up the plane's engine. You start dragging it backwards.

The plane will still take off. It may take it longer, but it will take off. Because it is pushing against the air, not the ground.

The whole point is to make you think what is important *relative* to what. What reference frames are "governing" and all that.

Posted by: publius, the Persistent Poperin Pear at June 28, 2017 11:59 PM (8O3HH)

527 "The whole point of the hypothetical posed was that the treadmill moves the plane back as much as the thrust had moved it forward so THE PLANE DOESN'T ROLL ANYWHERE. "

This presumes the treadmill has something to do with the planes motion. It does not. The plane is freewheeling. Except for the possibility of a little extra friction from the movement of the treadmill it will have no affect on the forward motion of the plane.

The planes wheels aren't locked and they don't drive the plane. - If the treadmill were turning at 200 mph and plane takeoff speed 200 the wheel would be spinning 400 but the plane would be moving 200. Takeoff.

Retreating Blade Tip Stall.

Posted by: Eromero at June 28, 2017 11:15 PM (zLDYs)

Which is why conventional (horizontal plane main rotor and vertical plane tail rotor) helicopters, have a aerodynamic speed limit of around 220 mph, +/- a bit.

But some 'copters are a bit faster, such as the Chinook, with counter-rotating fore-aft main rotors, or hybrid 'copters with pusher propellers and fuselage mounted stub-wings.

And the Osprey, which when in level flight, is not a helicopter, but a weirded out conventional aircraft with prop thrust and wing lift.

The various Kaman type, intermeshing rotor type helicopters though, don't suffer retreating blade stall effects. They're just too damn slow to ever get there in the first place.

But they're the most stable platforms in hover, yet developed.

As much as we've all hated on the Osprey for it's insane development costs, in both dollars and lives, it's proving to be one hell of a workhorse in active duty environments.

I think we'll see many more such platforms, from large to small, and with mission envelopes yet unimagined.

572 This presumes the treadmill has something to do with the planes motion. It does not. The plane is freewheeling. Except for the possibility of a little extra friction from the movement of the treadmill it will have no affect on the forward motion of the plane.

I think I had this discussion in sixth-grade science or something...my point was that more wind in front of the plane meant the props or jets had more air to push.

I didn't quite grok that the plane was floating in a big moving ocean.

you're not far off, chili around here usually starts off with my wife breaking out the 50-year-old (yea, damn near literally) crock pot and asking 'what beans do you have up there in the cabinet?'

So almost anything that'll cook down in eight hours might end up in the pot, though the pur-sang recipe is much cleaner than that.

644 I was skimming and kind of half reading this argument about fucking treadmills and airplane takeoffs and then someone posted that link to that cute blonde with the small titties and the nice ass trying on bikinis when I had a thought on how to settle this argument.

Find some dumb fuck Congressman to slip in a provision into some omnibus defense spending bill that creates a ginormous treadmill that can go 200 miles per hour that can be used to test take off and landing of F-fucking-22s. 400 Million bucks divided between Boeing and fucking Gold's Gym, sounds good. There's some asshole stupid enough to make this shit happen. Fucking Republicans, what are they good for? This. This is what they're good for.

Well, Richard Pryor and Mel Brooks never got their hands on authentic Argentine Yiddish tango, so they had to settle for frontier gibberish instead.

I finally beat Rome 2 a while ago. I never have beaten it as Rome though. I of course did the smart thing and went with the group that is as close to the Mongols as you could get. The Scythians. My armies consisted of majority horse archers. A few melee cavalry and some axemen to provide front support for my ballista/onagers. Send out the archers and just line them as close to the enemy as possible and just watch as they rain arrows and fall back.

I just get back to the thread and see ^this^.

Guess I'll be drinking some more gatorade later to compensate.

I had pig tails while on a business trip to Canada. They were just as good as ribs. I ate both the BBQ and Kraut cooked types. If I remember corectly (which is happening less and less these days) it was at the Blue Moon Tavern in Waterloo/Kitchener.

731 Holy crap, just a couple of weeks after a mass assassination attempt on GOP Congressmen, Atlantic editor Jeffrey Goldberg is saying Trump will be to blame for violence against reporters.

I do not believe it is possible to lack *that much* self-awareness and still use words.

I keep using the acronym DARVO a lot lately, for some reason.

732 Maybe like the oxpecker, the tiny bird that lives off rhinos, human society will always have a quasi-criminal class that lives off the people at the pleasure of the people in charge.

Why isn't it called a rhinopecker?

737 We're not here because we're free; we're here because we're not free. There's no escaping reason, no denying purpose, ... without purpose we would not exist. It is purpose that created us, purpose that connects us, purpose that pulls us, that guides us, that drives us; it is purpose that defines, purpose that binds us.

743 How's the water temp? Pretty frigid?"

Gather late last night, so haven't been near the water.

But I'm guessing that it's not terribly warm yet.

If I play my cards right, I won't see sand or salt water this trip.

Cool, cloudy morning in the Adirondacks, only 72 for the high today.
