Was the FBI Investigation into General Flynn Just Payback for Him Embarrassing the FBI by Supporting an FBI Agent Who Complained of Sex Discrimination?

I don't know the answer.

But, as no less an authority than Chuck Schumer told us, you never go to war with the Deep State -- they have a thousand ways to get payback.

John Solomon and Sarah Carter continue digging:

The FBI launched a criminal probe against former Trump National Security Adviser Michael Flynn two years after the retired Army general roiled the bureau’s leadership by intervening on behalf of a decorated counterterrorism agent who accused now-Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe and other top officials of sexual discrimination, according to documents and interviews.

Flynn’s intervention on behalf of Supervisory Special Agent Robyn Gritz was highly unusual, and included a letter in 2014 on his official Pentagon stationary, a public interview in 2015 supporting Gritz’s case and an offer to testify on her behalf. His offer put him as a hostile witness in a case against McCabe, who was soaring through the bureau’s leadership ranks.

The FBI sought to block Flynn’s support for the agent, asking a federal administrative law judge in May 2014 to keep Flynn and others from becoming a witness in her Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) case, memos obtained by Circa show. Two years later, the FBI opened its inquiry of Flynn.

The EEOC case, which is still pending, was serious enough to require McCabe to submit to a sworn statement to investigators, the documents show.

The deputy director’s testimony provided some of the strongest evidence in the case of possible retaliation, because he admitted the FBI opened an internal investigation into Gritz’s personal conduct after learning the agent “had filed or intended to file” a sex discrimination complaint against her supervisors.

McCabe eventually became the bureau’s No. 2 executive and emerged as a central player in the FBI’s Russia election tampering investigation, putting him in a position to impact the criminal inquiry against Flynn.

Three FBI employees told Circa they personally witnessed McCabe make disparaging remarks about Flynn before and during the time the retired Army general emerged as a figure in the Russia case.

See this Flashback from the Washington Post: the FBI reviewed Flynn's calls with the Russian ambassador back in December and found nothing illicit at all.

And so they turned to trying to nail him on a paperwork foul having nothing to do with Russia at all.

Almost as if the top echelons of the FBI had been politicized and weaponized.

Thank God we have a cadre of "conservatives" to lecture us every day that anyone who works in a hierarchical organization and wears a suit is due the unquestioning obedience one would offer a living god.

Dear sweet merciful heavens above, I struggle mightily to not overreact and take the view that everyone who works at the FBI are vile cretins but this is making it much harder to not do so.

Mike Schmidt works at the NYT. He used to cover steriods in sports, Pete Rose, etc

A year ago he gets all these FBI stories. DOJ stories. He becomes "a big cheese".

He seems to know what Comeys thinking. Last summer NPR interviews him, the reporter, about Comey, the FBI and the HRC investigation. Schmidt defends Comey to NPR. Schmidt shares the NPR interview with the Columbia professor that we now know Comey leaked to. In hindsight its clear, Comey is leaking to Schmidt of the NYT.

Schmidt is a big wheel now. Lots of big breaking stories about Comey, the FBI, and investigations. All very favorable to Comey. Schmidt cowrote many of these articles with....Eric Lichtblau. Lichtblau worked for the NYT until April 2017

Then Lichtblau went to CNN. And got fired yesterday for the sourcing on his Trump/Russia stories and the FBI investigation thereof. And his source was most likely Comey

Uh huh. Do you mean the people who give false testimony on hair samples?

Or do you mean the people who completely made up the field of bite mark comparison?

Oh oh oh oh I know! I know! You mean the people who lied under oath about ignition points in arson cases?

Since you brought up child fuckers having rights too, do you, mayhap, mean the people who dropped child pornography charges against a guy rather than disclose the code for the malware that was inserted on his computer to track him after the court ordered such a disclosure?

No, no, no, no, I know, you mean the people who go in and take all of the records relating to the use of stingrays from local Florida police the night before the police are due in court to turn over the records to the judge who ordered the disclosure of those records on the grounds that it's a joint task force and the FBI doesn't have to honor a state court request.

You mean those people? Because, guess what, all of the above is true.

You know, I would take this high dudgeon of standing up for the noble people working in the trenches if those who try to shove that nobility in my face ever once acknowledged that there are serious issues that cause people like me to have such doubts.

Does the FBI do good work? Hell if I know because so many of the people toiling in the trenches have countenanced testilying for so long that why should I believe it.

Obama fired all the IG's and slashed OIG budgets as soon as he was coronated, instantly reducng the possibility of any investigations.

Oh and for years the FBI ran one of the largest "dark web" sites for the purchase of people's credit card and personal identity information and it's never been explained if the people whose financial information was used were aware that they were part of this. All signs point to no.

Mortimer, here's the thing. I admit, flat out, that my view on the FBI is biased by such events. I even ranted at length the other day about how much of this stems from the utter shock of discovering that the vaunted FBI labs were, to be polite, greatly overstating results. I *try* to fight that. But you and others in the Noble FBI Agent camp? You appear to be wholly unwilling to do anything but handwave handwave handwave when this is pointed out.

Barky fired IGs thereafter as well.

Remember Gerald Walpin? The IG for the ludicrous boodle program left over from the Clinton years, Americorps? (Which the "compassionate conservative" Dubya Bush had left in place?)

Walpin found evidence of illegal diversion of Americorps cash to benefit the mayor of Sackamanura, CA. Federal felony stuff. However, said mayor was an old crony of Barack Obama's. Obama instantly fired Walpin. Said he was senile and unfit for his post.

I hold no brief for Glenn "soccer balls and teddy bears" Beck, but one thing where Beck did do the national discourse a favor was to have Walpin on his show, where Beck administered the standard medical senility assessment. Walpin proved to be entirely in his right mind, oriented, and focused.

What did our diligent watchdogs in the Capitol Hill GOP do once this outrageous abuse of the inspectorate general was revealed? They yawned in boredom and scratched their nutsacks and went off for long liquorous lunches with K Street lobbyists. Obama was keeping the pork flowing copiously, and that's all that really mattered to them.

It wouldn't matter how he cut his hair. These insane nutters would try to tie it to some apocalyptic sign.

Just saw on my Facebook feed a posting by a couple of acquaintances some "resistance' facebook page in which they state that Kelly Anne Conway, who tried to explain there are no actual cuts to Medicaid in the health care bill, it's a return to authorizing states to adjust their Medicaid dollars to best serve their population and that Obama had increased Medicaid rules to include those well above the poverty line. She said that able bodied adults who can work should go find a job and get insurance(yes, I know all the ifs and buts with that statement) because Medicaid should be only available to the elderly , the sick, the truly poor, etc.

So of course, all the fake outrage sites are posting that Kelly said people should be kicked off Medicaid, and the stupid that flock to those sites are saying their father with Alzheimers in a nursing home can't work, their niece's 15 year old isn't allowed to work, etc.

Oh, and CNN is peddling the story that the bill cuts $800 Billion from Medicaid. Kelly told Allisyn that is false, there are no cuts, just moving money around, and Allisyn, who hasn't read the bill told her she was wrong.

Seems to get ramped up the closer those people get to making laws and enforcing them.

254 I had a shaved head, and got told I looked like a Nazi. I grow my hair out, and clean up the sides a bit, and still they say I look like a Nazi.....

With hair grown out I look like the professor from a silent, German, sci-fi flick.

255 Only a little OT:

Remember the Fast & Furious whistleblower, Dobson? Well, he's still at ATF and get this...they have "transferred" him 11 times in the past six years.

No retaliation. No, no, none at all.

257 I think it is safe to say the FBI, like many big organizations, is bifurcated into two factions: the upper echelon and the worker bees.

The former is a small, tight-knit cadre of people with many of the same goals and world views - they are "the job." They work long hours and enjoy the office politics and decision-making and empire building that comes with running a large organization.

The latter makes up the bulk of the organization. They are usually 9-to-5ers who don't get involved in office politics, are not in management, and usually look forward to leaving on time to enjoy life outside their job.

One can criticize the upper echelon without tarring the worker bees. This seems to be the scenario with the FBI right now.

Lt Col. Matthew Markinson said it best when he described Col. Jessup as "someone who knows how to sidestep a few landmines" to get to his position.

259 But you and others in the Noble FBI Agent camp? You appear to be wholly
unwilling to do anything but handwave handwave handwave when this is
pointed out.

Handwaving. Riiiight.

I have been nothing but critical of bad FBI agents and supervisors.

However, I name names.

But by all means , feel free to continue yelling at faceless masses and mass indicting thousands over the actions of a few.

260 242 Shall we discuss the lawyering profession while we are gettting all honest and introspective?
Posted by: Mortimer - Finish Her! at June 27, 2017 02:08 PM (Uxokn)

Sure. The legal profession is horrible, soul destroying and I'm not kidding about that, full of vile people and rewards the very worst in human behavior. I am not in active practice because the legal profession rewards the very traits I hate the most about myself.

There's a reason why first, let's kill all the lawyers has been around since Shakespeare. Lawyering, as a profession, is disgusting. Lawyers, including those of us with JDs who are not in practice, are arrogant, nasty, vain glorious people who are not nearly as smart as they think they are, myself at the front of that line.

There you go.

Alex, you know that is an untrue statement. Shakespeare wanted the lawyers dead because they were educated. And your overreaching characterization of all lawyers may be your experience, but is patently untrue. There are a lot of good lawyers laboring in the trenches doing their jobs taking care of people and working for good things. I know, because that's what I've tried to do for the last thirty years. Sorry for your bad experience; but you can shove your snotty attitude to the profession.

261 The "worker bees" are intensely involved in politics. A lot of the stuff that's been going on would've been shut down if a single one of them went on the record. They refuse to do so because they support what's going on.

The so called intelligence community has the same liberal monoculture as the EPA or NASA or any other government agency.
