EMT 06/24/2017

I've spent every free moment the last 2 weeks rehabbing my first house to put it up for sale. Been a rental property for the last 6 years or so. Good tenants, but lots of stuff to do.

I think I am about 2 days from done.

New paint inside, pressure washed the siding, new kitchen counter, re grouted all the tile, fresh stain on the deck, repainted the garage, new caulk everywhere, reseeded the lawn... I contracted out for the counter install and some of the exterior trim repairs and painting. The rest is all me. The wife doesn't know this yet, but when this place sells, daddy gets a new TV.

35 16 DHS Secretary wants to regulate the internet. Not all of trump's picks are working out so well.

In my biz we have to deal with a lot of DHS regs. Kelly hasn't impressed me so far. But neither have any of his predecessors. I can only speak to the issue of import-export regs, but in a nutshell, in that arena (and of course, the DHS behemoth has metric shit-tons of arenas), ever since the DHS swallowed up US Customs in the Booosh era, it's mostly been one clusterfark after another.

36 Good Lord. That's more work than I've ever done on my house, and I live here and have no intention of selling.

The house was built in 1956. My dad had new siding put on back in the 80s and I had the roof replaced about 10 years ago, but the inside is mostly original. It still has the original gas range and the Formica countertops with the multicolored boomerang squiggles.

Hey, people pay good money for retro 50s decor. I've got the real thing!

66 I have neighbors who have extensively remodeled their houses, by adding decks, additional rooms, or knocking out interior walls. Someone on the street behind me added a whole floor to their existing house.

1950s suburban developments were once mocked for being cookie-cutter conformity.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_2lGkEU4Xs

That's what they were like when they were first built, but a few generations of owners put their own stamp on them. Add in trees and landscaping, and the houses took on individual personalities.

Private ownership. What a concept.

97 TheJamesMadison is probably still asleep or having breakfast., but here might be an interesting topic to address on the subject of films. Peoples widely divergent views of the same film My son rented a film from the library, "The Diary o f a Country Priest" developed from a novel byGeorge Bernanos-which is an excellent but talky(Hey, it's a diary!) novel about a priest serving in the countryside of France. I had read the book, but never saw the film. I have decided from now on never to read the film inserts before I see a film. I am glad I hadn't done so this time. The film was an acclaimed 1953 film by Robert Bresson and the person who wrote the essay wrote that it's a movie about a priest who is in "prison" figuratively speaking, and whose life is a failure. What?? My husband and I lookedat each other after reading the insert and said, "Did we even see the same film? All I can think is that the person who wrote the essay had no real connection to the RCC and no religious faith. Yes, the parishioners aren't receptive to his ministry and he's very lonely and isolated , but a failure-no. He's faithful despite all the circumstances he goes through and there are some transformative movements on account of his ministry. The movie ends with his dying yet saying "All is grace". To me that is not failure. George Bernanos won an award for his book and although a socialist he was a person of deep religious faith who-although frustrated by things with the church-
loved it.

Anyway, I recommend the book-if you don't mind novels in a diary form-and I liked the movie very much. I'm just discounting the views of the person who wrote the essay insert.

128 Apparently, New York sets up its judges as little kings:

The same law allows judges to take unlimited sick leave. The lax
policy has benefited at least two severely overweight judges. Daniel J.
McCullough of Queens was finally forced into retirement earlier this
week after failing to show up to work for over three years because his
morbid obesity kept him in the hospital and rehab center. All the while
he was collecting a $193,000 salary and will still retire with a hefty
pension.

Another judge, Elizabeth Shollenberger of suburban White Plains,
landed a $175,500 seat -- but her 400-pound weight prevented her from
being able to climb the three steps to her courtroom bench. She's on a
fully paid, indefinite medical leave.

Posted by: Vic We Have No Party at June 24, 2017 05:46 AM (mpXpK)

That Japanese ship was operating flawlessly, travelling straight and true on autopilot until it was knocked off course and speed by a deaf, dumb and blind U.S. destroyer.

It then made automatic course corrections to resume it's programmed settings and speed until someone manually turned the ship around to help the injured destroyer.

There is no excuse for the destroyer.

Even if the container ship was manned by crazed Filipinos bent on taking out the destroyer, there is no way they should have been able to get within a mile of it.

This is how far our military has degraded.

The house was built in 1956. My dad had new siding put on back in the 80s and I had the roof replaced about 10 years ago, but the inside is mostly original. It still has the original gas range and the Formica countertops with the multicolored boomerang squiggles.

In the mid 70s my new bride and I bought a 50s era range from a lady who was updating her kitchen. When I was moving it she said she knew it was a mistake. Cast iron griddle in the center. Heaven grates that would not chip. Wish we still had it.

Today he wrote down his weight in his Fat Book, where he's been charting his progress. He's so happy - and amazed. Added bonus - he can't wait to get to the gym each day.
