Guest Post: Observations From Flyover Country (Cumberland Astro)

Since Donald Trump was elected I have seen a spate of local news stories about companies building, expanding, or investing in manufacturing plants within a 50 mile radius of Chattanooga. With these new plants there will be hundreds of new manufacturing jobs. Although pundits in Washington who are much smarter than me (just ask them) keep saying that manufacturing in America is dead, I'm observing a multitude of companies behaving otherwise, including several foreign companies. I don't think the Acela crowd is aware that manufacturing is expanding in business-friendly states.

A semi-skilled worker could live fairly well in Dayton, TN for $45k per year, especially if his spouse is also bringing home a paycheck. Even better, Dayton is so far from DC that the factory's employees can work at their factory job without hearing Democrats call them "deplorables" or having Acela Republicans shrieking at them "YOUR JOB IS NOT COMING BACK!" Donald Trump wants these working class Americans employed, but it genuinely seems that a lot of politicians in both parties want to see them them contrite, broken, and out of work. Many Republicans would rather a Chinese peasant be lifted out of poverty by one of these jobs than have it stateside so a small-town Alabaman can live a middle class life.

Below is a sample of what I am referring to.

400 new jobs coming to Dayton, TN as Nokian Tyres opens plant

LA-Z-BOY INVESTING $26M, ADDING 115 JOBS AT TENNESSEE PLANT

Mohawk creating 380 jobs, investing $70 million in new Alabama fiber operation

Walmart to invest in 442 textile jobs at Renfro Corp. in Fort Payne, AL

Mohawk building new Tennessee plant, creating 245 jobs

Wacker starts work on $150 million plant expansion in Bradley County (Cleveland, TN)

Aerotek to hire over 200 more production workers for VW plant (Chattanooga)

My wife and I (age early 50s) moved from Austin (our hometown) to Chattanooga in 2016 in part because we could no longer tolerate the suffocating left wing nanny-ism of the Austin ruling class. The evangelists of the Sustainable Organic Church Of The Carbon Apocalypse have taken control of Austin city government and were closing roads, evicting Uber, criminalizing grocery bags, downsizing parking spots, and engaging neighborhood volunteers to train/spy on residents' recycling and composting compliance. There is another whole story about how Americans are self-segregating themselves into politically compatible locales. I've ceded Austin to the fascist left, and I want to live in a community where I can fight to preserve the conservative-liberty culture.

I am very familiar with the Dayton, TN area and, yup, you can live nicely there for that and be within a hour of Chattanooga which is a lovely city, about an hour and a half or so from Knoxville if you are in the mood for what at least used to be some excellent pro football and it's, what, three hours to Atlanta? Nashville's a few hours away too.

The greater Dayton area is very lovely indeed as well.

21 I'm a free market conservative that believes in some economic nationalism that isn't afraid of trade protectionism.

To me, the same economic arguments for open borders are there for Free Trade. I don't doubt that some sectors and individuals benefit, but I don't buy for a minute that as a whole we benefit from policies like that.

We've tried "free trade" and now about 99% of the time the goods we purchase are no longer made by American workers.

This meme needs to be smothered in the crib. It may be accurate to say that mass[/] manufacturing* is a thing of the past in the US, high tech/precision manufacturing is still very viable. This is also more desirable from a business standpoint: higher margins being driven by a (higher) skilled workforce.

That's what I decided to do in 2007, but it took 'til 2012 to pull it off. Maybe others are getting the message too.

Also, I've been in DFW 5 years now and am still amazed at all the building and expansion. If anything, it seems like that's accelerating also. Seems like every nook and cranny is being filled in, at least here on the south end.

We haven't tried free trade in a long, long time. What we have had is managed trade, government managed trade.

If we had real free trade we would all be driving flying cars and crushing the rest of the world economically.

41 It's funny, I was thinking this morning about the whole those jobs aren't coming back that the Democrats have been yelping since NAFTA.

No, you think those jobs shouldn't come back. You think that working with your hands is somehow immoral and wrong and a lesser form of employment. You think, frankly, that slaves over *hand waves* there somewhere should do it and who cares about the massive environmental problems, it's just in the middle of China, like that's a real place.

Funny Eastern TN story. I was out hiking with a college boyfriend (yes, Horde, I have a bad tendency to be not loathing of people who like going Outside) and we came across a yuuuuge, luxurious field of pot. We decided discretion was the better part and headed back down the trail post haste. We were discussing this with someone local who said, all casually, oh, yeah, that's the sheriff's field, don't go up there again.

70 There are a lot of mid size companies that are expanding , relocating and retooling, because they are able to respond to markets much faster than giant behemoth manufacturers.

Kentucky has been putting ads on Facebook touting the amount of midsize manufacturing the state has welcomed in the last decade.

Go to any of the business friendly states, which excludes Illinois and some of the coastal states, and their state websites will have a list of press releases pertaining to the expansion or development of light industrial, tech, or even heavy industrial businesses in their state. If their state allows, development of fossil fuels and mining.

These jobs DO however, requiring the ability to read, write, do math and have problem solving skills. The days of simply standing on a line and packing a widget into a box for eight hours a day , with the exception of Amazon, are leaving as robots and mechanical packaging take over.

And I believe that those states in which an emphasis on stem and basic education has not been totally overrun with SJW crap will produce the employees who can do just that.

103 It's not that manufacturing output in the US declined. It didn't. However manufacturing employment went down as more was done by computerized robots with fewer but higher skilled employees. If we increase manufacturing employment to levels that were there before the computer/robot revolution, say late 60s, then our manufacturing output will be many, many, times what it was then.

107 In manufacturing here in WI:

1. More jobs than qualified people available.
2. Failed drug tests still the biggest obstacle to hiring.
3. People making it a few days and then just not showing the second.
4. Specialty CNC operators are a 6 figure job within 5 years at some places.
5. With some industries starting to make a comeback (mining, oil and gas, some extent ag) things are going to be crazy for awhile.

First order of business should be current welfare/public assistance structure:

Absolutely no public assistance for any able bodied person that cannot pass drug tests or keep a job consistently.

Lack of jobs is not a problem...of course the Acela corridor doesn't see these jobs as quality ones.

Had to transverse town by freeway and went inside the city limits. Took my exit onto another freeway at an interchange and the weeds growing on the elevated ramp were waist high. Reminded me of going to New Orleans in the late '80s or early '90s when the state of LA was broke and I-10 had weeds growing over the roadway from the shoulder.

And the problem in Colorado is that The Resistance is in overdrive in all the necklace counties surrounding Denver county. Denver and Boulder counties gave PDT less than a third of the vote, but the adjoining counties didn't even give him 40 percent.

We're in far NW Chicagoland now, been staying here for the past few weeks. Here, the ring counties surrounding Cook county gave PDT a majority, and there's a distinctly different feel to everyday life when the left is not in control.

Friday, in a moment of sheer frustration with my out of state boss and job, I wrote him an email detailing some of the bullsh*t that I have to go through for him. I NEVER do this, but thought "you know, he needs to know what I go through for him."

His response?

I don't know if Houston has gone downhill. It's always been run by the Democrats but tempered because Harris County was an overall conservative county. I can't see any discernible difference but maybe I'm just that frog in a pot of soon to be boiling water.

Now Dallas has always been a wanna be NYC or LA and full of SJW.

184 I'd like to see manufacturing of basic items come back as well as manufacturing of precision components. I'm tired of buying Chinese crap that falls apart quickly and doesn't work well before that.
Example, while terraforming my two acres, in four years I went through two big box store compound loppers at $30 a pop. Broke the blades - it was the damn bull briar roots mostly that did them in. Tipped wise, I got a Stihl for about $120. After 20+ years it now needs a few replacement parts and a good blade sharpening. You get what you pay for, if you can find it. I could run through a list of other simple products, ones I bought, Chinese, and ones inherited from my Dad, domestic. Almost inevitably, the Chinese are inferior in every way to meet a price point. Isn't there an opportunity there?

There was one, post-WWII, when "cheap manufacturing" in Rest of World lay in a smoking ruin. And that was the period when sellers of stuff had it demonstrated to them that American buyers would go for a cheaper anything, once or twice, so long as they could get More Stuff.

Third-rate US-made goods were as crappy in their way as third-rate goods from anywhere else. Their market went away really fast, at a point.

Sadly, some of the "production designers" whose job it was to cheapen things up retained their employment when the line workers moved on.

Since the earliest gun in their collection is a Spanish Arquebus from 1499, I'm inclined to believe their claim - and when it comes to some of the amazing multi-shot test guns created and submitted to the War Dep't in the 1800's by aspiring inventors, it's obvious that the item in their collection is the only one that ever existed.

What is the cause of this?"

It's obvious, and again the thing that no one wants to talk about because everyone gets mad.

White voters like new shiny areas and the jobs that go with them, so they move out to the suburbs. As they go black and mexican (I hate the faux- intellectual "hispanic" come on, they're mexican) politicians move in and start putting in racial favoritism as a basic social policy. Also, the LBLT (whatever) community allies with them and seizes the moment as a golden movement of Twink Power, and they use their White Privilege (and also daddy's money) to elbow their way to the top of the heap.

The normals all say "screw the core, let it turn into a ghetto" and move into the suburbs ringing the city and continue running everything important.

So in both Dallas and Houston, you have a minority dominated ghetto core city with a lot of gay politicians, surrounded by a much more populous ring of staunchly conservative white suburbs.

Also, school districts play into this a lot. This is the reason that the Dallas Independent School District is 97% Black and Hispanic (seriously, no joke) and places like Addison and other new suburbs are just as white.

And that's how racial politics plays out in Texas today.

246 67 I've always wanted to do a pig roast like they do in Hawaii.

Been there done that. It's ok, but nothing like a pork shoulder on the big green egg.

247 Second best brisket I have ever had in TN was at Sugar's Ribs in Chattanooga.

Best is at a little place called Neighbors in Nashville. Tucked back in a little neighborhood called Sylvan Park, and it is real hard to find if you don't know where it is.

248 I thought Memphis must be a dirty city -even though I have
never been west of Little Rock. One of my favorite movies -
Mystery Train (Jarmusch) takes place in Memphis. The impression I got from film is that Memphis was very run down. Mystery Train came out in 1989 though.

249 Likewise left Portland, OR to the left. Drove a rented truck 2500 miles away at age 75. Damn commies.

251 Haven't posted in a quite some time. I've been in the Austin area since 1985, its all true. Now I live a county North and a couple of towns away. I still need to be here for work for a little while longer. When I got here it was still a live and let live kind of place. That went away quite some time ago.

253 If Trump can pull the jobs part of his campaign off, smooth sailing! Go Pres.Trump and team! For all of us and our families. Dem or republican. We need this.

254 Plus, now that you are out of Austin, you'll be able to enjoy real winter weather. White Christmases, without all of that nasty sunshine. Just kidding. I think you made a great choice.

255 So, I had to chuckle while reading this. Seven years ago, I moved from Silicon Valley to Austin for many of the same reasons that you cited (summarized as "liberal stupidity"). Before I moved, a liberal friend in California who had grown up around Austin said, "So, you know that Austin is the liberal part of Texas, right?" To which I responded, "I grew up an hour north of San Francisco. The folks in Austin are junior varsity liberals as far as I'm concerned. Besides, the rest of Texas has them surrounded." But yes, Austin is the Berkeley of Texas and the Austin city council are a bunch of SJW nitwits. Perspective!

257 Chattanooga went real big for Donald Trump. God bless 'em. My dad and brother live there.

Ain't it great to live in a city where you can SPEAK YOUR MIND without flinching?

258 Vic, you're thinking of Chattanooga decades ago. They lost their old tanning plants, which used to put out a Sherlockian fug, but they closed years ago. My dad used to do business with them: a large and profitable black-owned corporation, he said, "that had the BEST PARTIES."
