All-male theatrical troupe preparing for a masked performance
House of the Tragic Poet, Pompeii

A week ago, before Johnny Depp, um, made the news, Neo-Neocon wrote:

The current New York production of "Julius Caesar" in which Caesar is portrayed as a Trump-like figure is no ordinary propaganda.

Caesar is a particular figure with particular characteristics. Why was he assassinated? Because the assassins thought he had become a tyrant. They met a bad end themselves, as assassins often do, but along the way they felt they were doing Rome a service by ridding it of a dangerous leader. They considered it to be not an assassination, but tyrannicide. . .

She goes on to make some interesting comparisons with the theatrical visions of John Wilkes Booth. But she also includes commentary on a writer at HuffPo calling for Trump's legal execution. The HuffPo writer also called for additional executions. The HuffPo writer's plan for purifying the land is considerably more disturbing to me than Johnny Depp's recent foray into heroic fantasy. Because Johnny Depp is kind of crazy. And because the HuffPo piece actually got published.

And because Julius Caesar was not the only guy assassinated in Rome.

When classical historian Victor Davis Hanson thinks about Trump, similarities to a later Roman emperor seem to become apparent. Is Trump our Claudius? You know, the guy who came between "the charismatic, youthful heartthrob Caligula" and "a young, glib, handsome, intellectual, and artistic Nero".

Claudius's rule of some 13 years as emperor was marked by financial reforms and restoration after the disastrous reign of the spendthrift Caligula. Claudius-haters like Seneca, Suetonius, and Tacitus focused mostly on Claudius as the uncouth outsider--and overlooked what he had done for Rome after the disasters of the Caligula regime.

The empire under Claudius grew and was largely at peace. Rome annexed Britain, and added a variety of border provinces in the east. While court insiders and gossipers ridiculed Claudius's supposed ineptness, he nonetheless assembled one of the most gifted staffs of advisers and operatives--many of them freed slaves--in the history of the Julio-Claudian and Flavian dynasties. . .

If Claudius constantly scribbled down observations on imperial life (unfortunately now mostly lost), Trump is an incessant tweeter, who daily issues forth a litany of impromptu impressions, half-baked thoughts, and assertions--that are likewise the stuff of ridicule by journalists.

What differences and similarities do you see between our day and the days of Claudius? I, for one, do not want to see anything like the installation of a Marxist Nero.

I get the feeling that palace intrigue goes way beyond the palace these days. Anybody else get the sense that way too many people want a part in political drama?

Neo-Neocon again:

People like the author of that HuffPo piece see themselves as heroes on a great stage. Their disagreements with Trump can't be just the usual political dissension, because that would make them petty and ordinary too. No, the scale must be grand, and the remedy equally grand. There are a disturbing number of people around who feel this way, and some of them almost undoubtedly will try to act.

Hope your personal life is not this dramatic. Anything good going on this weekend?

And those foaming drain cleaners that expand to touch the sides of the vertical pipe work pretty good too.

Today is Graduation Party Day.

Being held now so that those who couldn't attend the actual ceremony due to work/distance (being actual working class rednecks) can have a mini-reunion.

Now everyone can enjoy with little or no pressure.

Funny with kids, if you don't watch them, they grow up and graduate all of a sudden.

I re-read Julius Caesar last week, just because. My understanding is that Cassius and Brutus decided to assassinate Caesar because they feared he would become a tyrant. Future tense. He had only just been declared Caesar. But I am no Shakespearean scholar.

Hubby's disassembled the bottom of the sink twice - those pipes are clear.

He snaked the rest of the pipes but he just used a 1/4" 20" hand auger from lowes so it's possible there is grease build-up lower down.

He had hacksaws and clamps out today so I have to fix this!!! before he gets anymore enthusiastic.

Running hot water can help a lot, especially if it's a grease/oil restriction. Boil a large pot of water and pour it down the drain, followed by hot water from the tap for a few minutes.

Was Caeser elected by a popular vote, that stemmed from the fact that middle class Romans sensed the previous Senate wanted to destroy them?

If that is not the case, any analogy between Trump and Caeser is bullshit.

A Trimvirate? Hmm, kind of like the Executive, Legislative and Judiciary today. not an exact comparison I know, but apt because Trump is always being "freezed-out" by a congress that won't pass any of his reforms and a judiciary that won't uphold any of his EOs.

35 I always compared Obama to Elegabalus, the transgender charioteer enthusiast.

Doing some Wiki laps, I found his successor's successor, the wonderfully named Maximinus Thrax, which feels like a character's name out of Titus Groan.

Max was a Thracian barbarian "of such size, so Cordus reports, that men said he was eight foot, six inches. His thumb was said to be so large that he wore his wife's bracelet as a ring for it."

36 As some in the horde know, I’m divorcing my wife after years of physical and emotional abuse. I am a Christian who firmly believes in the institution of marriage and did not make this decision lightly. I hate divorce.

I just finished submitting a horrendous round of discovery yesterday. I’m willing to treat my wife well and don’t know why she is fighting this, other than cutting off the money gravy train.

Unfortunately for her, the discovery forced me to open up a lot of things I can use against her. She would have been much better off accepting my original offer.

I just want her to go away.

Then it depends on where your drain exists the house. Left, right, center. But the root span is roughly equivalent to the leaf span of the trees. Might have gotten in...

But you've said in the past that it is only the one drain which is slow. So hopefully not that.

Pipe connections are the usual point of entry. Ground can settle and set them a little out of alignment -- just enough for microscopic root to get in. Then they expand on the other side.

102 I've seen right wing calls for mass "tyrranicide" for "cleansing" the nation as well. Some of those calls have been thinly veiled ones on this very site by commenters -- not bloggers -- and I've even darkly hinted at having sinful dreams about such an event taking place.

The difference here is that these are the rumblings of frustrated, worried, angry, and even fearful people seeing what is happening to their home, dreams, and future at the hands of left wing radicals determined to destroy all we believe in and hoped for.

What's going on now isn't dark mutterings by people, but outright calls for death and blood by leaders, pundits, and major public figures... played out in masturbatory fantasies by leftists to the accolades of their peers. And when someone actually attacks and commits violence their reaction is at most a shrug of regret.

The difference is one of several magnitudes. This isn't just some muttering of people. Its a deliberate movement designed to bring about death and destruction.

108 The Trump/Caesar analogy goes much deeper than that. The Senators were the entrenched, corrupt, and feckless 'power' in Rome. Caesar was not a go-along to get-along kinda guy. They had been trying to destroy him for decades and he always beat them at their own games. When they finally threatened to try him for treason he marched his army into Rome and chased them all they way into Greece and Egypt. Those that survived the experience hated him even more. He was a threat to their special privileges and the status quo that sheltered them. (Sound familiar?)

They accused him of wanting to be King (Hitler?), and yet all that he did was take power from THEM and return it to the people - keeping only such power as he needed to enforce his reforms. He was planning on leaving Rome to conduct a punitive expedition against the Parthians to recover the Eagle lost by Crassus - hardly actions of a newly crowned King with a fractious/rebellious Senate.

Caesar's 'crime' was insisting that the Senate had a duty to the people of Rome that superceded their own personal greed, ambitions, and privileges. Pelosi, Schumer, and the Clinton's won't pick up the knives themselves, but - like Cicero - will provide the rhetoric that will motivate those that will.

143 votormom..

Is your hubby familiar with the term 'Vent Stack" or "Plumbing Vet" concerning home plumbing systems?

Drain systems must breath in order for fluids to drain away.

Many homes have two stacks, which are the penetrations which come straight up through your roof, and usually simply end about a foot above the roof penetration.

When you said that ONLY the single drain was flowing slowly, that seems to indicate that it isn't the main drain line itself, or your tub would drain slowly if you filled it up and then tried to drain it.

Or you might have trouble with a toilet, particularly a first floor or basement toilet, or laundry drain tub backing up.

Has he ensured that the vent pipe is not obstructed from the roof down to where it connects into the drain line.

Some people simply take a garden hose up onto the roof, take the nozzle off, and stuff it down the vent pipe as far as it will go with the water running.

Ours has a sharp 90 degree bend at the bottom, and over the years has collected dust, dead leaves, and occasionally the debris which blocks air flow through the bottom of the vent into the drain system

That said, the FBI is a big big disaster and he has no one there. The other day he said Christopher Wray (yawn) would be his nominee for FBI Director. When I checked around to see where the nomination stood with the Judiciary Cmte and McConnell's office I was told that Trump had not "formally" made the nomination. Therefore, no action.

156 Actually Sulla had done most of the damage and rebuilt the 'mos maiorum' which, following his abdication, the 'boni' promptly set about destroying in their turn. Caesar (no Sulla in terms of political murder or personal power) worked - as much as he could - within the system which he (again unlike Sulla) respected. Almost all the deaths attributed to Caesar came in the Civil War. Most of his assassins had in fact (see Brutus and Cassius) had been pardoned by Caesar for their support of Pompey.

We had the same problem at Chateau Merde owing to palm tree roots growing into the sewage outfall, causing the sewage to back up about twice a year (typically on a holiday weekend - Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day).

I finally bought a real-deal power auger ($400) at Lowe's with a 100' cable and snaked it myself. Best money I ever spent.

Not that I have any real pressing problems, but I feel if I had a 10 minute conversation with PDT over a cup of coffee, I could express my personal concerns about the country, and how what is going on impacts my family and my job. I think he would listen and understand exactly what I was saying; and strangely enough, he could relate to it from his own experiences.

Now, as for say, Hilary, I'm not a potential funding source, a member of a victim group, nor even a sympathetic Democrat voter. Even if she listened and were cordial, there is simply no basis for shared knowledge based on personal experience. Not even on their radar screen.

I remember people being called a racist because they didn't want Obama's policies.

When it was first imposed, there was a real problem which AA tried to address. There were more than a few monumental idiots who would not hire blacks simply because they were black (see my previous post). Affirmative Action was an attempt do break that stupid system by government force.

Now, that doesn't make it any less based on bigotry: benefiting one ethnic group at the expense of another. But it was, at the time, more defensible in theory despite being an unconstitutional imposition of federal power over state issues.

In the course of running his business, he has dealt with people from all walks of life, unlike the career politicians who never leave their Ivy League law school/DC Beltway bubble.

It's downright spooky that his campaign rallied always ended with the Rolling Stones' "You Can't Always Get What You Want". He certainly seems to be the President America needs right now.

Heard a Philly talk radio host interview a reporter last week. These are almost direct quotes toward the end of the interview.

Reporter: Trump and his administration are racist.

Host: Whoa, whoa, I'm not going to let that slide, what do you mean and what evidence is there of that?

Reporter: I'm not going to spend my time arguing with you about that point. It's a fact.

Host: No, it's not a fact, you need to have some support for that opinion.

Reporter: Look, I'm not going to waste my time debating whether Trump's a racist. That's not a debatable point, because Sessions.

Interview pretty much over at that point as it was getting pretty hostile and the host tries to be polite.

That originally, that was just a wink at the crowd: I'll promise but it won't all happen. I believe he started out pretty much Bill Clinton without a hateful wife, but by the end of the campaign had been so savaged and so infuriated by the left he's got a revenge list ten miles long.

243 Jay, yes, but there are several areas of actual or potential overlap (where congressional investigative and subpoena power can directly play into legal action).

Take the example of Comey's appearance after his ludicrous July 2016 .... uh, not sure what to call it, the press event where he violated his oath, violated the accepted practices of his job, and beclowned himself with misstatements about the law.

Recall that Gowdy (I think?) followed up on something, the implication was that Hillary had perjured herself before the Congress earlier, based on Comey's statement of the facts - Gowdy said we'll follow up on this, Comey said please do, we'll provide what you need?

Whatever happened to that?

Also, the across-the-board refusal by the GOP to use Congress' main power - that of the purse/$ - has been as disastrous and inexcusable in these areas of law-breaking as in areas of policy. Take the "unmasking" scandal - which probably includes criminal as well as outlandish ethical and policy violations. Relevant agencies, AFAIK, *continue* to refuse to provide the oversight committees with info on this that has been requested.

WTFF? None of this scene, none of it, is comprehensible, or recognizable as the US, based on direct relevant experience that was not *that* long ago.

But few (understandably so - most people aren't govt. geeks who've wasted their lives inside the beast) really know much about the mechanics of how things did, should, and can work. So the jaw-dropping refusal of the GOP to engage in politics, or use their power to that and good policy ends, is only perceived by a few, even though many are frustrated just based on common sense.

Things are changing rapidly, my friend. Just heard of a local employer that just tripled the referral 'finders fee' for any employee who finds them a qualified applicant who stays 90 days or longer.

On the other hand, finding out an employers turnover ratio is never a bad thing. Zero to about 15% is country club, above that pretty normal. You see a company with higher than 50% turnover, you're into sweatshop range. This employer I mentioned above with the bonus, I ran their numbers -- greater than 100% turnover per year.

That is true. There are some options Impeachment, Contempt of Congress. I am totally clueless about what they can do. But it would only seem logical that more can be done. For instance, if there is evidence of suspicion of wrong doing that becomes clarified, under oath, can they not request something like a Special Prosecutor, refer it to a law enforcement agency, send it to the Ethics Committee, the all time WDC favorite -- leak the information?
If there truly is no recourse, then why bother at all? What is the reasoning? If it were proven without a shadow of a doubt that Hillary Clinton herself made a call to stand down for the Benghazi rescue (clearly not true) what would happen? What path would that take?
Further it seems there are things Congress an do but does not. Like request that the Susan Rice unmasking info be retrieved from wherever it is and returned to Congress.

256 I qualified my comment about the "only mass political assassination attempt in our history" with a reference to the Puerto Rican attack on the House chamber - and the wider plot of which Booth's murder of Lincoln apparently also qualifies.

My point did not rest on those particular historical details.

Point was what an outrageous, shocking, and (practically speaking) unprecedented event this was - and the astonishingly small little ripple it seemed to make in the pool of public opinion and even Beltway mood.

Do you agree that affirmative action is good?

Affirmative action as it was intended or as it is practiced?

Yadda yadda

Well then no - I think AA is more destructive than constructive.

Then you're a bigot.

No - by your own definition AA is institutionalized bigotry - and I am opposed to bigotry.

265 stand there patiently listening, then at the end say, "Are you done?" and then ask the original question again.

Yeah, that does't seem to go over well, either. That's why stupid feminists came up with the term "mansplaining."

Men tend (not all men, nor consistently) to be more rational and analytical, and women tend (not all women, nor consistently) to be more emotional and intuitive. That causes clashes, when a woman will intuit or feel something to be true, but is not experienced or skilled at analyzing why she came to that conclusion or arguing it and the man wants to know and understand.

Sometimes language betrays us as well: she will say something that to a man's rational approach means one of a few limited things, but to her means another set entirely. The more tired, hungry, and sickly I feel, the less patient I am with this and the more I demand answers. That never works out.

266 Shame on me - my patience and rage-management policies prevent any closer attention - but take the current/recent case of the "unmasking" outrages.

There was talk that re-authorization for certain surveillance programs would be delayed, or denied, absent agency responsiveness to inquiries about who ordered unmasking and who had access.

This is exactly the sort of leverage that Congress has, in myriad little and big ways, over the agencies. It goes beyond holding appointments or $$$ hostage. (BTW, I don't know what happened with those re-authorization threats related to unmasking info)

Back when I was there, it was a daily, ongoing process of exerting influence over the executive branch. Just part of the framework within which everyone worked. Now?

Congress has presented a bizarre image of helplessness, when it actually holds most of the cards. The GOP's absolute refusal, their Stalingrad-defender-like resolution in NOT engaging in politics (using your power in a high-profile way to get results, and explaining and crowing about it to the electorate, while forcing opponents to take opposing stands - "differentiation"), is mostly to blame, I think.

And then gave Regulatory power to the Executive Branch... with the power of Law...

Oh, and on Supreme Court Issues, if its about a Law Passed by Congress... how about Sense of the Congress Bills which TELL the Supreme Court what it meant by a Law... (like Robert's Obamacare is a tax crap, when Congress said it was not a tax... a resolution passed by Congress to the effect it was NOT a Tax, would have torpedoed Robert's sophistry...).

Husband insists that it will not go on the market as a fixer upper. The biggest problem is that the yard is hopeless. Front yard is shaded and clay soil. Backyard is overgrown with blackberries even though it was cleared out a month ago. We have had a little help but really need to sell a few things and see if we can get it finished. We've found a place we want to buy.

And when we finish this, we get to put money into the place on the river and sell that too. It's a mobile we have to remodel because they won't let you build there. At least I get to retire at some point.

Thanks for the reminder that there are things that can be done. And that for some reason Congress, or better the Republicans, whether in power or not, fall back on "helplessness". It's not that they can't. They won't.

I wonder if the House realizes that it has the power of the purse.

280 This is really cool. Somebody at NSF.com managed to sync two launch videos together, the Iridium-1 launch in January and yesterday's BulgariaSat-1.

https://tinyurl.com/ycsnnsdw

What makes it remarkable is that the same rocket was used in both launches--and landings.

If you missed the one yesterday, don't worry. They're launching another one tomorrow. Friday's launch was from Cape Canaveral and Sunday's is from Vandenberg. They haven't managed to turn around the same launch pad in 48 hours...yet.

286 Yep Don the substitution of Continuing Resolutions (omnibus appropriations) - with essentially one up/down vote conducted under the pressure of "government shutdown" theater - for individual appropriations bills has been the ultimate, and spectacular dereliction of congressional duty.

Again, geeks in these matters will appreciate the audacious dimensions of this better, but by acceding to this approach (esp. starting in 2011, after being handed the House by an electorate that was not looking for their reps to hide and do nothing), the GOP almost formally announced they hoped to prosper entirely by luck and inertia and the idiocy of their opposition, and refused to actually lead or do anything useful.

Which they have. While the country and its future continue to be damaged.

Dunno if Bannon and Trump et al even know what to do about this, or what role the WH might take. So far they've been very passive, which I think is squandering Trump's peculiar but very real mandate.

Lead - not sit like a potted plant and take anything you get - on undoing the damage of O-care.

Make it clear ONLY individual appropriations bills passed in regular order will be signed.

Engage in politics. Not just tweets mocking the press or Chuck Schumer (wonderful and useful as those are). State your priorities and put members of Congress on the hot seat if they oppose you (BOTH parties).

Politics in a representative republic "works" when it involves choices, and consequences. That's the whole point. The GOP has hidden for years. Trump should go into their dusty spider-holes with a firehose and flash-bangs, and force them out.

296 For a historical novel approach to the fall of the Roman Republic I suggest (hesitantly and with reservations) Colleen McCullough's "Masters of Rome" series, beginning with "First Man in Rome"

Caution - while more than merely accurate history these can become tedious and tendentious exercises in reading frustration. Her research was exhaustive and awe-inspiring, but she was so proud of it she could not help but put it on display: repeatedly and annoyingly. After she has described the entry to the Forum for the eighth time you will scream in frustration - but you will keep reading. After she has interrupted a dramatic action scene with a piece by piece description of the tile work and statuary you will groan aloud: 'OK, I want to know this but NOT RIGHT NOW!

Her history, as I said above, is very impressive. I may take issue with some of her inferences and analysis, but every time I felt compelled to check facts she was right.

That is what's really scary. Congress has voluntarily neutered itself and ceded power to the Executive. And no 1933-style Enabling Act was necessary.

I suspect Trump is poorly advised. He would do well to beef up his staff. Priebus has proven to be -- no surprise -- useless. Or worse.

I am not sure what it is that is holding Trump back. But he is either going to have to lead or be hamstrung.

I would take some bold moves soon. I doubt that many would agree with that. But soon, any decisive move that Trump makes will be heralded as that of a "dictator". A meme the media and the Dems have not quite polished as they have Russia/Trump one. But it's coming. And it will reinforce all the thinking of the "patriotic" crazies who will feel justified in their actions.

You can directly ask them. Or get the numbers by asking how many employees work here, question one. Then ask how many employees left or were fired in the previous year.

100 employees total. 50 left or were fired in past year = 50% turnover. Time to look some more. Or be prepared.

You take the job, first confrontation you're armed with 'Now I understand why this company has such a high turnover ratio'. It might slap the right person in the face. Or maybe not.

318 In 2005, a group of MIT students, prodded by "a desire to play with some expensive equipment," tested the effectiveness of [tin]foil helmets at blocking various radio frequencies. Using two layers of Reynolds aluminum foil, they constructed three helmet designs, dubbed the Classical, the Fez, and the Centurion, and then looked at the strength of the transmissions between a radio-frequency signal generator and a receiver antenna placed on various parts of their subjects' bare and helmet-covered heads.

The helmets shielded their wearers from radio waves over most of the tested spectrum (YouTube user Mrfixitrick likewise demonstrates the blocking power of his foil toque against his wireless modem) but, surprisingly, amplified certain frequencies: those in the 2.6 Ghz ( allocated for mobile communications and broadcast satellites) and 1.2 Ghz (allocated for aeronautical radionavigation and space-to-Earth and space-to-space satellites) bands.

350 Devil at #324:

The First Triumverate (Caesar, Crassus, and Pompey) was long gone when Caesar marched his legions on Rome. Pompey was now firmly in the Cato/Cicero camp and led the senatorial exodus in flight.

The Triumverate was 'active' from about 59 BC to 53 BC. Caesar 'Crossed the Rubicon' in 49BC and was murdered 5 years later.

359 Any suggestions RE: questions one should ask in an interview for an hourly/commision sales job? Asking for a friend...

Posted by: shibumi at June 24, 2017 02:28 PM (aT+Bx)

Average commissions for other employees doing the same/similar job. Any recent change to commission schedule? (Sometimes employees leave in huff when commission rates are cut) Is there a certain quota as far as sales generated? Territory. Travel reimbursement, if appropriate. Travel as percentage of job. The companies recent sales -- flat, lower, or rising? Is this a new position, or replacing someone who left?

That's about all I can think of in a minute.

Not just the average, but also the minimum and maximum commissions. Is there a draw, and how is it offset against commission. Any seasonal trends in sales/commissions, so you know to lay aside some of the fat months for the lean ones.

384 My response will surprise you. Married 24 years, separated 11 years, divorced 6 yrs: and yes we are still in love with each other. Talk on phone daily, meet 3-4 times per week, dinners lunches and breakfasts are routine. Every meeting and phone call ends with mutual assurances of love. During a very emotional angry 36 hours things were said that cannot be unsaid - forgiven, but not forgotten. The mutual trust that was absolute was broken. The unspoken agreement that 'no matter how angry I am, I will not attack you "there" ' was lost.
We were both at fault - and we both remember.

But the love is still there and 40 plus years later we will watch Camelot together and reach to take each other's hand.

385 I don't see how Trump can be compared to Claudius.

Claudius was an insider (scion of the Augustan House) who was known as a hapless dork - a beta, to use a common metaphor. He was elevated to Caesar because there was no one else of the House who was even marginally plausible, and no one feared him. He didn't even want the job.

Trump is an outsider (politically), known for aggressiveness, major success in business, and alpha-male strutting, who gained the Presidency through a ferocious struggle.

I wouldn't call Suetonius a Claudius-hater. He recognized Claudius' faults, but he generally praised his rule. He did of course blame him for Nero, but that was a fair cop.

Nice argument. And yet the House of Clinton and the media pushed Trump to prominence during the primaries because they did not fear him and because they viewed him as ridiculous in the world of politics.
