Overnight Open Thread 6/21/17 (tmi3rd)

Good evening, Morons and Moronettes. I'm tmi3rd,, and I'm filling in this evening. The fact that there just happens to be a tropical system about to go ashore on the Gulf Coast is merely a coincidence.

Seriously.

More beneath the fold...

Well, since tropical weather has traditionally been my beat, let's touch on it very briefly...

Cindy.gif

Tropical Storm Cindy will go ashore around Sabine Pass (roughly the TX/LA line), and a Tropical Storm Warning is in effect from San Luis Pass to the mouth of the Mississippi River (basically the greater New Orleans area). Winds are sustained at 50 MPH with gusts to 65 as of 8 PM EDT, and what's going to happen is that it's going to take its time moving into southern Arkansas. About 3 days in, it'll get absorbed by a cold front and haul ass off to the east.

The thing to bear in mind is that what typically gets people in trouble in tropical weather is not wind, but flooding. So anywhere you've got sustained heavy rain (particularly in the first three days after landfall with this one), you have that potential for severe flooding. If you're in the path of this storm, just please stay away from high water.

On to the fun...

So the Stanley Cup Finals finished up in the last week or so, and my Nashville Predators lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins in six games. It was a bummer of a way to lose a series, but I'm not going to re-litigate the series. Instead, I will extend my sympathy to one of the teams my Preds beat, the St. Louis Blues. The following video documents the pain fans of this franchise have been through.

CONTENT WARNING: if you're a Blues fan, this is absolutely BRUTAL.

Yikes. Sorry, guys.

Sooo... this is a thing, eh?

Australian man who binged on meth feared dead after attempting to have sex with crocodile

Welp.

...on this occasion, the man would make a fateful decision while his judgment was impaired by the drug. "He was a few hundred metres down the beach when he started pulling his clothes off," said the friend. "We thought he just wanted to streak or something but then up ahead we were shocked to see a croc."

The group of friends shouted at the man to leave the crocodile alone, which was estimated to be around 2 metres long. "We were worried he was so off his face on ice he'd try to provoke it, but nothing would prepare us for what he did next."

According to the friend, the man- now naked- leapt at the crocodile and started trying to have intercourse with it. "We were still a fair distance back, but I reckon he just about got it in," said the witness. "Of course, the croc wasn't having a bar of it, and it started thrashing around like crazy."

The man's friends were powerless to help as the crocodile clenched its jaws across the man's torso and hauled him into the water. "There was some thrashing around under the water for a few seconds before nothing- it was just still," said the distraught friend.

Tonight's musical selection...

This guy's name is Peter Kastner, and he's a session bassist from Los Angeles. He's playing a tune called "Nardis", and he's playing a really amazing instrument made by a luthier named Rob Allen. The MB-2 (or MB-5 in its 5-string version) is a semi-hollow instrument, and I was STUNNED when I picked one up for the first time.

I *SUCK* on upright bass, but I've done plenty of live and session work on bass. When I need to get an acoustic sound of one form or another, I can get EXACTLY the sound I'm after from this instrument, and I'll be picking one up shortly. Those of you who are familiar with my playing know that I'm a Pedulla guy when it's up to me, and usually wind up playing Fender in the studio. The Rob Allen basses are truly exquisite instruments, and you can check them out at roballenguitars.com.

One more musical selection...

This is just more of my study music. If I'm listening to classical, I'm conducting it and it's a distraction. So I stick to deep house.

Some closing thoughts...

So Ace and Instapundit have been spearheading the "punch back twice as hard" initiative (for lack of a better word) against the left, and I largely agree. There are a few things I want to point out that are worth imitating from the left, and there are a few worth avoiding.

As a preface- this is just my take, so it's worth exactly what you're paying for it. Your mileage may- and probably will- vary.

First of all, I agree with this piece: "Political Violence Is A Game The Right Can't Win". Here's why, part one: as the linked piece notes, yeah, we're better armed on the right, but they organize better. From the piece:

The first thing righties have to understand about Lefties is that lefties have a lot more practice building their own institutions, and assuming control of existing institutions, than their counterparts on the right do, and they share their practical experience with each other. Righties who like to build churches will build a church and worship in it. Lefties who like to build churches will build a church, write a book telling people how to build churches, go out and convince people church-building is the thing to do, run workshops on how to finance, build, and register churches, and then they'll offer to arrange church guest speakers who'll come preach the Lefty line.

Righties need to do a better job of teaching each other. And not just teaching the right-winger closest to them. The most organized groups on the Right are the pro-life and RKBA activists; everybody else on the Right should be learning from them.

Strong stuff. Here's the second part:

The second thing to understand about Lefties is how they actually function. There's a lot of independence involved. Righties like hierarchy, so often think of the Lefties as taking marching orders from George Soros or whoever in a very hierarchical fashion. Not so much. A lot of left-wing organization is very decentralized, and they negotiate with other lefty groups as to exactly how they'll do things and time things to not hurt each others' work, so the labor movement's march is not derailed by black-bloc window-smashing (see, for example, DIRECT ACTION, L.A. Kauffman's excellent history of the Left from the 60s on).

The Lefties call that approach "embracing a diversity of tactics," which, taken to its logical extent, is a weasel-worded way of saying that the lefty mainstream is comfortable with radical leftist violence. People don't like to talk about this much. But while it's impossible to imagine, say, an abortion clinic bomber getting a cushy job at an elite university, that's exactly what happened to a number of alumni of the 1970s leftist terror group known as the Weather Underground. As fugitives, they were financially and operationally supported by members of the National Lawyers' Guild; afterward, they were so normalized that the 9/11 issue of The New York Times infamously ran a profile lauding Weatherman alumnus Bill Ayres. By contrast, right-wing terrorist Eric Rudolph's fugitive days were spent hiding in the wilderness because no one would help him. He was caught literally dumpster-diving for food. Potential right-wing extremists face opportunity costs that their left-wing counterparts do not.

As you can imagine, it's time to read the whole thing. I've got one final point to make, and then the rest of the evening is yours.

On the right, we've been led around by media hosts who told us what we wanted to hear, only to find out that about half of them were in it to take our money. Thus, my skepticism of Jack Posobiec and Laura Loomer. They created a spectacle, and the GoFundMe page for their legal fees is doing quite well.

Because we've had so many political candidates essentially run for office in order to do book tours and become Fox-famous, I want to see these folks put their money where their mouth is, which leads me to my bigger point:

Nobody likes a scold, and nobody likes annoying people. Ace has said this for well over a decade, and it can't be emphasized enough: we gain nothing by becoming snowflakes, SJWs, or all the things we rightfully point at, laugh at, and detest.

That doesn't mean that we shouldn't hit back, but it means that we need to not become exactly what we despise about the left.

Kick that around and decide for yourself a) whether that's something you can get behind, and b) what it means to you. Mine is a decidedly imperfect take on it, as I threw it together in the last ten minutes before putting this post up, but again,
see what you think.

Thanks as ever for reading- I'm back to med school in another couple of weeks, so I'll be pretty busy shortly. That said, if you need to get a hold of me, please don't hesitate to come find me on Twitter, and have a good evening! I have to be up with the kids in the morning, so I won't be around too late tonight.

On tactics? Yes. On Strategy? No.

The left is effective strategically because no derivation from the party line is allowed.

Get 10 conservatives together to talk about politics in a room and you'll have at least 11 arguments about high level philosophy and ethics.

76 What kills me about all the people on the Right who immediately condemned Loomer and Posoboec that they should have done this or that, that they were doing it wrong is this: What *do* these people support/endorse?

Every time a person or group on our side pops up and does something there are a ton of critics who sniff that it's not the right approach. Palin, who was good at conservative messaging and criticized Obama (unlike McCain) was too Midwestern and unpolished (that voice!). The Tea Party was icky, too. Silly outfits, to confrontational, etc.. Breitbart, James O'Keefe, the PP video people, again, too combative or whatever.

78 Nice ONT, tmi. Thanks. Down heah on the MS Gulf Coast, we have been getting hammered with rain for the last 2 days, with moar in stoar. In Hancock county alone, there were nearly 400 road closings due to flooding today.

A random thought crossed my mind while watching the bass video -- Most solos get their best attention when they move to the high notes section, whether bass or regular guitar. Now why is that?

Actually, I think it's true for piano solos, flute solos, horn solos, etc. You can't do a solo without an extended visit to the higher registers.

79 The most organized groups on the Right are the pro-life and RKBA activists; everybody else on the Right should be learning from them.

RKBA is one of the stunning successes against the Left. People forget that before hardcore pro-2nd Amendment people took over the NRA in th 1970's, almost everyone believed in heavy gun control, and outright banning civilian ownership of handguns was a popular opinion.

The NRA and similar groups took their time to change the culture regarding guns, even in the face of strident opposition, and pushed for incremental change where they could, and delay where they could not.

They works such that they didn't have to win political fights anymore... by the time the issue came up, they had already won. If the Heller decision had come up half a century ago in SCOTUS, the 2nd Amendment would be dead.

The second thing to understand about Lefties is how they actually function. Theres a lot of independence involved. Righties like hierarchy, so often think of the Lefties as taking marching orders from George Soros or whoever in a very hierarchical fashion. Not so much. A lot of left-wing organization is very decentralized, and they negotiate with other lefty groups as to exactly how theyll do things and time things to not hurt each others work, so the labor movements march is not derailed by black-bloc window-smashing (see, for example, DIRECT ACTION, L.A. Kauffmans excellent history of the Left from the 60s on).

This is what is known as a "Stand Alone Complex":

95 Just for the record, the Jacobites were the supporters of the Stuart pretenders. Jacobus = James, that is, James II, and later James (III, as Jacobites counted it). The most famous was of course Charles, best known as Bonnie Prince Charlie. It was strongest in Scotland, of course. (Those who have read Kidnapped will recall Alan Breck.)

They predate the Jacobins by almost exactly a century.

The leftists' propaganda has a surface appeal, so they are able to spread their ideas like a virus, and most people are too lazy or historically ignorant to think of counterexamples. 162 Nice job, TMI3rd.

I am for using the tools the founders gave us to wipe the floor with the left, but first we need to persuade the non-idealogues what a threat the left is, i.e. the Evil Empire, Uncle Joe Stalin USSR. This means using the new media and hopefully breaking up the media monopoly the left has. Six or so companies control nearly all media in the US. We need to break them and their hold on the public.

183 A kind and / or fair word about Andrew Klaven:
He seemed to have read the criticism he got, for his take on the Julius Caesar protesters. The angst of his detractors being 1) watching and worrying about the deep state or garbage baby protesters for the past two months, 2) that the double standard can show up in a billion deniable ways in the business between the government, the media and the public.

I imagine he was reacting to only the event in particular, which was cringe inducing. "Goebbels! You are are all Goebbels!"

He points out that we swept up the majority of the federal government in the last election, and we should not do anything to imitate the other side. Well actually he said the opposite in his sarcastic radio voice, but you know what he meant.

The double standard must be talked about as something the Left cannot help but to do. They are too tribal to stop, or to even know what they are doing. A newly elected conservative should say "Politics wasn't my first choice, but I took this job because you you treat me like an inferior and you wouldn't leave me alone. You lost because you couldn't hide how awful you are."

190 Yes, the left has worked their Alinsky magic on the influential cultural organizations. They have captured them all over a five or six decade span. And yet: Trump.

They continue to throw everything including the kitchen sink into the mix. And yet: half the country cannot be turned anymore.

If you wanted to capture the United States and fundamentally transform it, you could not ask for a better set of tools, a bigger or more powerful podium than the left possesses. And yet they are losing. Oh yes, they ARE losing. Their increasingly desperate, crazed, rhetoric and actions are not symptoms of strength. They are admissions of failure.

All this, and yet the right has scarcely begun to fight back. We have kept our heads down. We have cast our votes. We have marked well their hypocrisy, violence, double standards. Here they are at the peak of their power--and yet they just lost big...and keep losing.

I disagree with the linked piece. The left may have built a mountain out of their corrupted institutions, but the right is the glacier that is inexorably going to grind them into dust. It won't take a civil war, although if provoked we would exterminate them. All we have to do is keep our heads down and keep driving them and their insane ideas into the sea. One way or another, the right wins. We will bury them.

241 Related to the last post in the ONT There is a real simple reason why the right would get crushed in a civil war. Leftists have poor, minority shock troops chomping at the bit to go #thepurge on "nazis". Also, violent leftists from around the world would be gladly imported to do the same. Eurolibs really do believe republicans are the greatest evil on the planet. They would come into the U.S. in droves. That bizarre alliance among the left and Islam would only be enhanced if arms were involved. Nevermind the quiet coup that has occurred throughout the military. You think all the folks in the armed forces are reflexively right leaning? Not anymore. Maybe 60 percent of active military. No. A civil war would be a bloodbath. And not a particularly close fight at that.

251 >>>So Ace and Instapundit have been spearheading the "punch back twice as hard" initiative (for lack of a better word) against the left, and I largely agree.

I largely disagree. Sortof. I'm in favor of punching back, but I am in favor of the "Ender's Game" initiative.

When a bully goes after a soft target --- which is what the Left always does... you never saw them go after Black churches during the Prop 8 situation or go after Muslims when it comes to misogyny and gay issues --- they do so with the expectation of not getting hit back.

So imagine a bully getting hit back. This will merely annoy them. Kinda like the Karate Kid standing up to Johnny on the beach. Now imagine the bully getting hit back twice as hard. Kinda like the Karate Kid sucker punching Johnny in the face. Did this stop Johnny? Nope. It just pissed him off and made him realize that he needed to stop messing around and go all out to put the little twerp down.

No, punching back twice as hard will do nothing but stir up the hornets nest and piss off the Leftist bullies even more.

What needs to happen is the Ender's Game initiative. Those who have seen the movie know what Ender did to his bully to get not only the bully, but all the bully's friends as well, to stop bullying him. He fought to win not just the current fight, but to win all potential future fights as well. He won them before they even happened, because he prevented them from happening in the first place. Making picking on him so awful, that no one wanted to do it anymore.

That's what needs to happen if we want this to end. Punching back twice as hard is what needs to happen only if we want to start a drawn out battle with these a-holes.

252 I disagree with the piece that says the political right depends on hierarchy. It is the political left where everyone is a cog in a machine.

The political right dislikes an organized hierarchy so much that there is no political machine

People like me on the political right don't take orders. Given an order, we'll wander off and do whatever we want which breaks both the hierarchy and the machine.

259 190 Yes, the left has worked their Alinsky magic on the influential cultural organizations.

Posted by: rickl at June 21, 2017 11:06 PM

THIS.

I appreciate Lawrence Larson's optimism, but we --- conservatives --- are definitely not winning. Trump is all we have. And that's not much.

The Left has the media, Hollywood, grammar schools, high schools, colleges, universities, music industry, sports (i.e. the athletes now getting more politically active, such as the GS Warriors, Michael Bennett in the NFL, Kaepernick, etc), control of influential companies (ie Facebook, Twitter, Google, etc)... in other words, every communication medium of influence, the Left controls. And they enforce speech codes and black lists. In addition, they encourage leftist domestic terrorism and political violence (ie OWS, Black Lives Matter, GOP assassinations, etc).

And let's not forget the LGBT terrorism that happened over the years to shut down anyone opposed to that (bakeries run out of business, churches and homes and CEOs terrorized over their positions on Prop 8, etc).

Winning would be moving this country's culture back towards conservatism, small government, individual freedom and liberty, supporting American citizens over illegals, condemning obvious cultures of death (Islam) instead of giving them special privileges to commit terrorism without consequence.

Instead, we are a culture of "diversity", "safe spaces" and "cultural appropriation".

Really, other than Trump, who of any influence is standing up for America and conservatism right now? Oh yeah, and now the only slightly right-of-center media outlet that existed has gone left (Fox News Channel).

This is winning? I'm sorry, I just do not see it. A Trump Administration to fend off a Hillary Administration was simply a band-aid. But this country is bleeding badly from the Left's constant attacks.

In a weird way I think getting rid of Pelosi would be a disaster for the Democrat Party and therefore, a good thing for us.

She
has amazing power and control. Everyone is afraid of her. She almost
single handedly rid the party of Blue Dog Democrats after forcing them
to vote for Obamacare.

Yeah, she is old and perhaps senile, but
crazy like a fox. There would be a lot of damaging infighting with the
Party. Again good for us.

300 Nite all, I'm headed to bed.

Posted by: Farmer at June 21, 2017 11:25 PM (yJ1e6)

301 I need moron advice here....

There is a bar I like to frequent. It has good food, good drinks, and fun events.

The main waitress/bartender is incredibly moody though and sometimes a pain to deal with. We've argued and gotten over it before (over what was a stupid over-reaction on her part).

I went to the bar this past weekend with my cousin. My cousin is in his late 30s and balding though he was wearing a hat.. She hassled him about his ID, which was a valid ID.

I got tired of it and left to go to another bar with my group.

Anyway, my girlfriend forwards me an email...apparently she took it on herself to email the bar to complain.

My girlfriend got back what looks like a form e-mail saying they would look into it. My girlfriend thinks this means that they are going to be all nice and fluffy if I go back.

302 Related to the last post in the ONT There is a real simple reason why the right would get crushed in a civil war. Leftists have poor, minority shock troops chomping at the bit to go #thepurge on "nazis". Also, violent leftists from around the world would be gladly imported to do the same. 307 The key is the left leadership rarely attacks one another, or at least do not fall all over themselves to be the first to say how "concerned" they are about one of their own.

Posted by: MAGA at June 21, 2017 11:09 PM

I was thinking the same thing.

I think it is a great thing that there is no "leadership" on the right. We're all individuals and stand up for something, instead of taking orders or spouting talking points.

The difference between the left and the right is that when someone on the Left goes out on a limb for liberalism, the Left 'circles the wagons' and supports that person. Strength in numbers.

But when someone on the right goes out on a limb for conservatism, the same circling of the wagons does not happen.

And of course, both of these actions --- or non-actions --- send a message to people. The Left's support of their own encourages more of their own to be active. The Right's non-support of their own --- or worse, throwing their own under the bus --- encourages their own to stay silent and non-active.

The other difference I see is that the Left treats every single issue and incident as a "hill to die on", while the Right more often than not has the "this is not the hill to die on" attitude. The former attitude means that while you may not win every battle, you'll at least win some battles, including some that you didn't expect to win. It also means that you have practice in fighting these battles and you learn lessons from victories and defeats to help you win battles in the future.

The latter attitude means that you are guaranteed to lose battles you don't even bother to fight and you don't learn any lessons from the battles you didn't fight.

The supply lines for those goods are quite long once they arrive at those cities.

Those power lines travel over long distances where there are very few people around, and over terrain that makes repairing them very difficult. About 5 years ago a big storm knocked over some of the high voltage transmission lines that supply the western part of the state, it took 5 days for those lines to be repaired. Just imagine what it would be like if multiple transmission lines were knocked down. Rural area people? Most have a backup power generator and a good supply of fuel.

Food? Most city dwellers have maybe a couple of days of food stored in their home. Their grocery stores have a couple of days of food. Most rural area residents have weeks of food stored because they are used to not being able to get to the stores for weeks because of weather problems.

Water? Rural people are usually on wells, urban on municipal water supplies.

For the record, we are farmers and are against all farm subsidies. I understand, if someone was going to pay me more money for a certain crop, or the government would give me money, we would do it too. I don't blame the farmers.

Posted by: orginal jake at June 21, 2017 11:14 PM (bMFhC)

I agree such a terrible thing would be a bloodbath. After all, if the last Civil War proved anything, it's that Americans are never so good at killing as when we're killing each other.

It's also true that the hard Left is leery of taking this all the way. Why? Because--with reason--they fear us as much as they hate us.

If I were them, I'd be scared of us, too. So far, violence has been limited because we--ordinary Americans just trying to live our lives--have gone out of our way not to engage them at that level. If this violence starts touching everyday lives, that will change with a quickness.

Counting myself, there are three combat veterans in the little suburban cul de sac in which I live. Imagine that pattern repeating itself nationwide. Now imagine the fate of anyone dumb enough to start shit in such neighborhoods.

There's your bloodbath right there.

Not really. Lefties don't build anything. They wait for a normal person to build a church and then they lie their way into the administration of that church and turn it into a lefty slush fund.

Lefties are just parasites. Nothing more. They destroy things that other people build. That's about it.

People keep on assuming that they are representative of an overwhelming majority, and that we only have to take out a few evil swamp dwellers, and then #winning, is folly.

The Left have been fundamentally transforming America for well over a century. They have converted, as Marxists call it, the "superstructure" (i.e. the fundamental tenants of society).

The only thing that keeps and conserves anything any element of American society are those edifices that the Left still has to pretend to give a damn about. Abolish that, so as to "fight back like they do" does nothing by remove the one restraint upon them that may allow us to find out way back to before their evil work started showing poisoned fruit.

The Left used our own values to justify their end goals. Once, they've justified their policy, they seek to delegtimize the values that they appealed to, while all along normalize their own twisted values which at least temporarily justified the end position.

If you want to emulate the Left, use the Left's own values and justifications to re-normalize good American end goals, then use that acceptance to renormalize our values while delegitimizing the Left's. Then, and only then, will we be able to achieve victory over their perfidiousness.

362 My dickhead BIL and his latest girlfriend came over to the house this weekend to celebrate fathers day with the FIL. Each one went into the bathroom individually for about 10 minutes each, and when they came out were much more alert than when they went in. Both fidgety as hell,

I think the behavior is dispositive.

365 Plutarch: "The millstones of the gods grind late, but they grind fine."

I share most of Laurence's optimism. We are winning the culture war, whether it feels that way or not. Generation Z sees how transparently grasping the millennial SJWs are. A very high proportion of them roll their eyes or quip a joke that is almost worthy of Teh Horde.

I'm taking a statistics class. Every class the teacher works in a liberal talking point in a labored and desperate way. I'm gonna keep my head down, knowing and swearing on a stack of bibles that she's not influencing a single person even the tiniest bit. She's self medicating, but otherwise counterproductive to her cause.

It's true that liberty must be defended every generation. The current generation opposition is in a downward spiral. They are tone-deaf and have zero self-awareness. Hillary gave a speech and declared Pepe the Frog haram. Take that as a sign of who is in whose OODA loop. Take that as a sign to start acting like a winner. Magnanimous, stoic, or fuck-you-salt-the-earth. Your choice, but you are a winner.

369 Related to the last post in the ONT There is a real simple reason why the right would get crushed in a civil war.

Posted by: Jason4 at June 21, 2017 10:59 PM (yN+zo)

I think you are wrong. It would be a bloodbath, but I do not think it would be as one sided as you seem to think. The thing to remember if it does come to a shooting civil war is the amount of civilian arms and those are primarily in the hands of the right. The heavy arms are in the hands of government, but who knows which side they (the military) would come down on- and it would most likely not be an en mass thing, depending on the circumstance, shall we say.

As far as whether we are likely to get into a shooting civil war- in a way we are already in a cold civil war. I sometimes worry that the worst thing would be that we do not finally have it out with the left, and instead we do a slow slide into statist tyranny and Stalinist purges.

On the other hand, history has a way of making fools of prognosticators. "Events, my dear boy, events."

388 Hat you are giving the conscript militaries of Europe too much credit. Yes there are a few elite units in the mix, but most of the conscripts are just that - conscripts.

Two weeks before Christmas, you do not want to get between the Italian Air Force conscripts and the gate because that is when they are released from their mandatory service.

In the German Luftwaffe, a conscript can sometimes choose their career field. So some choose to be the waiters in the NCO and officer clubs to have the skills for a job once they get out

Then there is the matter of logistics. Look how fast the RAF ran out of munitions while bombing Libya for example. The massive stockpiles in Europe are gone.

With national infrastructure and channels paralyzed, we'd be at a disadvantage.

Add in, not just Euro troops, but millioins of troops from far less restrained parts of the globe, and it could be a route.

But you also assume people will have the time and luxury of organizing and establishing defensible war-time infrastructure.

Consider this: During the day, enough troops/police are sent into to public schools and sealed off... "for the children" of course. While this is happening, communication is shut down and all people are told is that there is some terror threat. All the Left has to do is have cameras waiting for some armchair warrior try to free their children from the school, and then distribute the unadulterated video. Combined with a release of targeted individuals (thanks to Silicon Valley's date mining) and labeling them suspects in terrorism, those targeted individuals will be rounded up. Plausible excuses will be prepared before hand for why most of them end up dead.

Tell me, how do you counter that?

408 There's a lot of independence involved. Righties like hierarchy, so often think of the Lefties as taking marching orders from George Soros or whoever in a very hierarchical fashion. Not so much.

There's a Darwinian effect, though. Soros, the Tides Foundation, the Ford Foundation, etc provide the money, which is the grease that makes everything work. Sure, they don't take marching orders from Soros. But only the groups that do what he wants get money, so those are the ones that survive.

Lefties don't want jobs. They don't want to spend the whole day at Walmart and then come home and make posters. They want to do this shit full time, and the Soros money allows them to do it.

428 400: AOP, did you get your golf cart battery charging problem figured out?

Posted by: publius, the persistent poperin pear at June 22, 2017 12:18 AM (8O3HH)

I did indeed. Turns out there were a host of problems. I bypassed the cart's on-board computer (charge controller), and neither charger would put a milliamp of juice into the batteries.

Charger #1 turned out to have a fried negative wire in the 3-wire cord adjacent to the plug where it enters the cart. So I robbed the charging cable off Charger #2. Still didn't charge, but bypassing the relay which seems to be NFG, made it come good. Twenty amps, initially, coming down to about 13 by the time I shut it down. And reconnecting the OBC with a now known good charger: it doesn't charge. Pretty much condemns the OBC, I'd say.

I spliced the fried charger cable, and installed it in Charger #2. The diode bridge in that one was shorted, which is why it kept popping its circuit breaker. I found another diode bridge in my junk box, and installed that. Had to bypass the relay in that charger, too. It put out 13 amps, which was the same as the other charger did before I switched them.

To make it really right, buddy is going to have to order one charger cable (special 3-pin plug), 2 relays, and the on-board computer. But he can use the cart now, just by treating the chargers as "dumb" chargers, and unplugging them after charge rate plateaus at a minimum.

445 379 Many European countries still have mandatory service, and what military they do have are competent.

The restraint you see is not because of innate wussyness, but because their "enemy" is not a politically correct one. They will act far, far different against an approved "evil".

Posted by: The Political Hat at June 21, 2017 11:55 PM (vBeA5)

Hat, that's the distinction that defines the difference, isn't it?

If the American Left imports Euro Antifa types, as would be expected, it'd be a rout.

Should they be wiser, and import properly trained EuroVets, then the shit gets real. And that, quickly.

Still, after the first shockwave hits, and is registered... then, they lose.

They could not fly in sufficient numbers with which to deal with what would come after their first attacks.

At the height of the Iraq war, there were about 170K US troops in Iraq. Iraq has a population of 36M, about 1/10th of the US population. Iraq has an area of 169,000 sq/mi, the US has an area of 3,797,000 sq/mi. California has an area of 163,000 sq/mi for comparison.

Those Eurotroops will have to operate in climates and terrain that they have never seen before, and against defenders that are familiar with the terrain and have family and friends that will hide them and supply them.

Also, they can't blend in. The first dozen of so that go into the mountains of WV,VA and KY and don't return will be a wake up call to their comrades. And mamas back in Europe not being able to bury their babies' bodies will sour them real quick.

What spin?

Considering worst case scenarios assumes the worst, and they the other side has the luck and our side does not.

A few nights ago there was an exchange with some 'ron (don't remember the nic) and zombie. The 'ron said that they've never met anyone like a S.F. Leftist. zombie replied that (s)he'd never seen a place like the 'ron described and that S.F. madness was normal, particularly amongst those with power.

The reality is in between, and likely not in our favor. The Left have for so long so deeply infiltrated society, that the basis for their support has been laid. Show the correct proverbial "Queen of Diamonds" and plenty of people you thought were sane and rational will side against you because the basis for your position has for so long been delegitimized, while the other side's has been normalized.

Never assume that you will win just because you are on the right side.

Never.

539 535: At the distance, the trajectory was far from a straight line.

Reading some more, the rifle was made in the USA. McMilian TAC-50, .50BMG. I'm sure that's that's about the only "normal" round capable of such a distance.

The shot was from elevation. The sniper was was high up, and the shot hit the target on a dropping trajectory.

Back in school, in Mechanics we had to solve some ballistics things, just for an exercise. You can add air resistance and still get something with a solution in closed form.

Rather than a parabola, it's actually a logarithmic curve. The horizontal velocity goes to zero and the bullet is basically just falling vertically, at terminal velocity.

For a real bullet, with spin, and taking into account all the other factors, well, it's a numerical solution.

I'm betting they've got some real fancy equipment now, for that purpose.

544 The maximum range for the TAC-50 is listed at 3750m (4100 yards).

This guy was pushing that envelope.

IIRC, the problem is the "transonic" region of flight, which is very chaotic. SUpersonic and subsonic are predictable enough, but the transition is a mess, and effectively unpredictable.

So I'm assuming that 4100 yd figure has to do with when the .50BMG round slows to the transonic region.

Again, I'm betting some of these elite sniper teams have some very fancy "sight" equipment. It would seem to me you'd need an on the fly ballistic computer and it would need to know wind velocity, and I mean wind speed vs distance to the target, temperature (and maybe that to as variable vs position) and all that.

395 Hat, that's the distinction that defines the difference, isn't it?

If the American Left imports Euro Antifa types, as would be expected, it'd be a rout.

Should they be wiser, and import properly trained EuroVets, then the shit gets real. And that, quickly.

Still, after the first shockwave hits, and is registered... then, they lose.

They could not fly in sufficient numbers with which to deal with what would come after their first attacks.

Jim

Posted by: Jim at June 22, 2017 12:03 AM (v5iqM)

You should go to a bass pro shop. They'll turn you into a pro in no time.

590 I think I'm working in your old neighborhood, Rick.
Right around the corner from DePaul.

591 DePaul, as in the hospital? That would be right next to my old, and now torn down, high school.

But going by my admittedly faulty memory, what businesses are around there? I remember the area being mostly residential.

592 Watching PDT's rally in Iowa from yesterday. Absolutely worth a watch.

For a non-politician, the man is one HELL of a retail politician. Something the Dems still do not "get."

593 Flipping houses, man. It's all residential still.

Being an older neighborhood, I'm sure there's lots of renovations involved in getting those houses ready to flip.

Tear down many load bearing walls yet to get that 'open concept' look? Open as in no bloody roof.

597 Heh. Just blew the roof off a house near me (Newtowne Rd) to add a second story room over the garage/kitchen area.

But I'm just painting & tiling down off Granby. Will refinish oak floors. Nothing too drastic. Nice house though - I really like that neighborhood a lot.

Hope you're doing well, brother!

Posted by: Albert Kings Flying V at June 22, 2017 05:48 AM (vugdY)

598 I'm actually doing quite well considering.

Had a minor issue with my blood pressure (too low), so my meds were adjusted. And the best of all (fingers, toes and eyes crossed to prevent any jinxes), no shocks or ER visits in over a year.

Still cooking. (I have to get some recipes off to Bluebell this weekend). My local grocery store's deli will sell the end pieces of their cold cuts, chopped into cubes, and sell them at a very reduced price. Got two containers of ham, close to two pounds, yesterday for a whopping $3. Made ham salad. (I tried it this morning and it is good.) I like cold food in the summer as my kitchen gets too hot and I stay out of there. I also made fish cakes (from whole fresh fish) over the weekend, with my homemade tartar sauce. I have got to buy more fish (and mayo, capers, gherkins, and tarragon for the tartar sauce; I hate jarred tartar sauce as it's use is so limited whereas making your own one can find other uses for the ingredients). I really like homemade fish cakes that actually taste like fish and not just breading.

601 Capers are a great secret ingredient. Tomato sauce bothers my ulcer so I make a tomato-less pasta sauce with olive oil, chicken broth, artichoke hearts, whatever Italian meats I have on hand (pancetta, prosciutto, soppresatta) a cup of the pasta cooking water, and capers. Basil, oregano, S & P and some chopped up hot peppers or dash of crushed red pepper for spice.

Always loved reading your recipes, Rick. I barely visit here anymore (even the fun weekend threads) other than to say hi to a few friends. The place just ain't the same.

Anyway, be well! Miss chatting with you at odd hours of the morning!

605 Garlic is the best thing for your health. And scallions. I put scallions in everything. I eat a couple cloves of garlic per day. Even if it's just raw. I've learned to chew that shit like gum.

606 dash of crushed red pepper

Posted by: WhatWhatWhat? at June 22, 2017 06:11 AM (ul9CR)

I gave up buying those silly little jars of crushed red pepper flakes. I now buy a one pound bag of dried Thai bird chilis at a nearby Indian (feather) grocery store. When I need crushed chilis, I grab a few and crush them, along with grabbing some of the seed 'shake'. The bag I currently have is down about two-thirds but I've had it for almost three years. Very economical. At least it's economical for me. I use hot chilis in so many things. Just like I use smoked paprika (in my book, a food group all its own) in so many things. I blame all that on my Bohunk heritage.

One time, when I was a wee lad visiting my Hungarian grandmother, I saw a pig hanging upside down near the kitchen door, with a neat bullet hole in its head. A day or two later, I saw my Grandma, an aunt and my Mom making homemade hot sausage. My Mom complained that night about her hands burning. The next day, my Grandma was cooking some sausage for Grandpa and just walking into the kitchen, my eyes were watering. Now hot stuff like that is a walk in the park.

607 On the left and its organization, a lot of that comes from motivation. The Left is simply more motivated than we are, and I don't see a way around it.

The source of their motivation is simple. Religious fervor. Humanity is wired to want to be part of something larger and meaningful, and their philosophies all throw God out the window. Having abandoned God, their need to have faith in some larger cause has found a new receptacle: An Almighty State devised by the greatest minds, a perfect Government that will deliver an Earthly Paradise.

They don't believe in an afterlife, they believe this is it, then poof, you're done. That fills them with a crusader's zeal to bring about their promised Utopia *RIGHT FREAKING NOW*.

Their impatience may be their undoing. The old Communists were smart and played a very long game. The new blood is so close they can smell it, and it drives them into a frenzy - a sloppy, idiotic frenzy where they're not aware of exactly how stupid they look.

612 Capers are a great secret ingredient.

Posted by: WhatWhatWhat? at June 22, 2017 06:11 AM (ul9CR)

I love non-pareil capers, not those big ones one has to chop. But I hate those small jars. So I started buying the economy-sized 16 oz. jar. Worth every penny to make sure I'm well-stocked in kitchen staples (and, for me, capers are a staple). Can't make my chicken/egg/ham salads without them.

Here's something to try if you can't do tomatoes and like capers. I use the sauce to top my sauteed/baked fish and it freezes well. I roast about 6 sweet red peppers, then peel and deseed. I put the roasted peppers into a food processor to liquefy. Removing it to a bowl, I then add sliced kalamata olives and non-pareil capers until the sauce is chunky, but still loose. When it's time, I reheat it; it goes really well with firm white fish like sole or even swordfish. And, like I said, it freezes well so I make a larger batch than needed at the moment. (This is one of those recipes I have to send to Bluebell.)

615 "Thus, my skepticism of Jack Posobiec and Laura Loomer. They created a spectacle, and the GoFundMe page for their legal fees is doing quite well."

But what incentives do we want to create. If Jack and Laura raise a bundle, even if they are simply in it for the money, won't their fundraising success incentivize others to fight back against the cultural left? In other words, even if their motives are not pure, do we not want them success so others will be encouraged to stand up to the left?

We should not over-analyze motives and ignore results.

616 "Political Violence Is A Game The Right Can't Win".

Bullshit.

Just because you think some of us haven't been organizing doesn't mean we haven't.

Should it come to war - and it most likely will - the bodies on the left will be piled in the streets and lit on fire.
