Bits and Bobs Open Thread

David Frum had a bit of a snit today.

Charles Cooke demolished his spasmodic, full-auto-ignorance tweets in two posts, the second one specifically mentioning David Frum, who, by the way, looks like he spent twenty years in Barad-Dur being raped by Gollum and learned to love it.

His every spastically uninformed argument rubbished, he then turned to -- get this! -- emotively shrieking like the sad Gollum bitch he is.

Jazz Shaw digests a good Peter Bienart piece about how Democrats -- who once routinely spoke in favor of border enforcement and even noticed (gasp!) that of course an unlimited stream of new foreign workers must depress native-born wages, have since decided that to repeat any of the things they uncontroversially said just 8-10 years ago is a vile heresy.

They did the same thing on gay marriage and Choose Your Own Adventure bathrooms, too, of course.

The FBI has bizarrely claimed that James Hodgkinson had no "particular target in mind," and that his assassination attempt was -- of course -- definitely not terrorism.

I forgot to mention this classic excuse earlier -- a Democrat operative said Ossoff lost because it was impossible to reach his voters, because they live in their parents' houses.

Sounds about right!

A precinct captain for Democratic candidate Jon Ossoff's congressional campaign complained recently that many of his constituents are hard to reach because they still live at home with their parents.

"Those were the angriest people," Jessica Zeigler told Slate, referring to the Republican parents of the young Democrats. "When you are targeting their child, or heaven forbid their child might not think the same way as them, it becomes ugly."

Living with your parents at age 27 does tend to make one angry.

The parents aren't too thrilled, either.

Speaking of Monster Babies, I linked this earlier, but it's worth highlighting: The President of Evergreen State Day Care Center says he's issued a "stern warning" to some of the thugs at his Monster Baby Nursery.

And that's all I got. Night!

I recall many years back, a pastor somewhere in one of those rectangular flyover states was stabbed to death, stripped naked, stuck to the floor in crucifixion pose at the altar of the church, and pentagrams and "666" were painted all around.

The FBI assured us that not only was this "not a satanic crime," but that "satanic crimes are an urban myth."

The crime was perpetrated by (I love this phrase) "self-styled satanists."

Hmmm... I've never heard of a "self-styled Christian."

189 Great day, Ace. BZ!

On the not terrorism-terrorism:

(5) the term "domestic terrorism" means activities that-
(A) involve acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any State;
(B) appear to be intended-
(i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population;
(ii) to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or
(iii) to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping; and
(C) occur primarily within the territorial jurisdiction of the United States.

Spin up a new version of the CIA based on Military Intelligence. Have them report to the Secretary of Defense. Current CIA can join the new organization on a case by case basis but would require personal approval by Mattis, and would become military personal.

Make leaking intelligence gained through intelligence assets, operating within the US, or working with another country to operate within the US a capital crime.

For the FBI identify the most competent state level cops and prosecutors. Have them spin up a shadow FBI that current FBI members are banned from joining.

The new FBI reports to the collective governors of the US - and every two years the current head of the FBI gets an up or down vote by state governors. If the vote is no, they get to nominate and vote for the new head of the FBI.

Move cases and budget from the old orgs to the new ones over the course of the next 4 years.

As for Wheel of Bathrooms, I've heard lots and lots of opinions, but I've never heard one thing explained: how will we secure the dignity and safety of women and girls if every man in the world gets to chose which facilities he wants? That is the central question and it's dismissed as some superstitious quirk of history, if its addressed at all.

I've never heard that explanation and I never will. Because there is no good explanation.

btw, I wonder if its occurred to some of these smaller countries that demand Open Borders that a country like China could simply flood a small nation, such as, say, Panama, and end up with the Canal.

283 "PT just said people coming into our country must be able to support themselves for the 1st 5 years. no welfare."

How do you define "support themselves"?

I've talked in the past about a notional immigrant couple who "work hard and play by the rules". Except they have two kids who they promptly enroll in the public schools as soon as they get here.

In Commiefornia, those two kids promptly blow a thirty thousand dollar per year sized hole in the budget for their local school district. Because that's what K-12 costs these days. About $15K/pupil/annum.

So even if mama and papa are "working hard and playing by the rules", and even if this family draws on the public fisc in no other way (a vanishingly rare thing in practice), mama and papa still need to be paying thirty grand a year in taxes just for us to break even on having the family here. And odds are, they're not paying anything even remotely close to that in taxes.

145 That's right! A stern warning! You heard me!
Do bad stuff again...and it goes on your permanent record! YOUR PERMANENT RECORD!
Don't test me!

I am ashamed to admit that I have a stain on my permanent record while an undergrad in the wilds of northern Michigan. My roommate, who was graduating one quarter earlier than me, may have been out imbibing adult beverages and may have been a little rowdy when we returned to the dorm. The charges, pressed by the lickspittle RA and revealed to us a couple of days later at a "disciplinary board" comprised of said lickspittle and the dorms' two adult managers, were that we had entered the hall after midnight, laughing boisterously, kicking doors and loudly saying "Ooooo!" References to a Three Stooges routine may have been made by our witty selves.

Boom. Lowered.

Trying to keep from laughing anew, we smirkingly accepted the shame and stain on our permanent records and promised that we'd not behave so churlishly there ever again. The guffawing when we returned to our room, which was next door to the lickspittle's, went on for some time, aided by further consumptionof adult beverages.

How I have lived with and endured this shame for all these decades, I'll never know...

365 "Just dont mention the teat known as ethanol"

oh good grief ... farmers supply food ... we have the cheapest and safest and most 'diverse" food supply in the world. (not China dog/snake style diverse I guess).

We pay farmers to grow nothing on millions of acres because we produce TOO MUCH. Farmers dies from job injury at twice the rate of the union cops, probably ten times the rate of union teachers that preach communism.

Yet you morons still cling to your religion of "kill the farmers first" to show how loyal you are to "capitalism".

You really want all those flyover acres run by globalist billionaires that hire third world aliens to run them? Have you thought this through at all?

Apparently not. We need a vibrant rural America ... the cities are run by Dem commies. Farmers in America produce TOO MUCH ... as used to be the case in Zimbabwe before the commies took control ... now the UN feeds them and they beg for white farmers to return, they promise not to confiscate their farms ... this time.

Ethanol the answer? It is just a way to sell some of the excess. But it is indeed a good way to convert sunshine into energy. Competes with drilling and refining oil. Dummies say burning food is bad ... must feed starving people in Africa. Well then growing cotton for your jeans (instead of food), or growing grass instead of food (in your lawn) is just as evil.

buncha dummies ... the Bible says use the food to defeat your enemy. (Joseph stored up corn and used it for "political leverage") ... but "we" must feed the nations for free? while they tried to screw us on the oil?

wake up people. lol

Well, thank you for the pinch faced scold rural farmer lecture, dummy.

Ethanol reduces mileage and ages car parts far faster than pure gas. The answer is to blow off burning food for fuel and stop paying farmers not to produce corn. Ya know, kill farm subsidies. Hows about that, Hoss?

Last I checked, a great many different produce items can be grown on land corn currently is growing on.

Maybe, get this, farming operations will have to grow crops that there is no longer an artificial demand for to survive as a business. It would almost be like market economics would rule the day, and not the Ag lobbyists.

Freaky concept to those of you in corn country, right?

Posted by: GOULD at June 21, 2017 09:29 PM (oux+a)

408 my brother and uncle sell corn to the ethanol plant. that same corn IS also used for food. it's just a process that separates the corn into different substances.

ethanol cuts emissions and keeps the air clean. It cuts down on the use of foreign oil and it helps family farms stay in business.

it's been fantastic for my family and for the midwest.

Last I checked, a great many different produce items can be grown on landcorn currently is growing on.

Maybe, get this, farming operations will have to grow crops that
there is no longer an artificial demand for to survive as a business. It
would almost be like market economics would rule the day, and not the

not freaky ... concept and reality are not the same.

I have a couple vehicles over 100K miles, ethanol never an issue. It is hard on small engines that have not changes some things to adapt ... that does suck. I found a place that sell no-sthanol gas FTW. But small engines just need to change ... I think they like the revenue from rebuilding the carbs.

other crops can be grown sure ... but profitably? I am working on that ... grapes, other horticultural products ... but we have that "free market" (BS) thing that floods us with third world products that use slaves and pollute. Two buck chuck is a wine ($3 after out of state tax) that lets slave labor in CA sell cheap wine, and depressed currencies in Chile and the like sell on the cheap. It is a complicated thing, and "free market" is a misnomer meaning globalists can sell products into America that were produced using third world slaves with little restriction on pollution or labor law. Get It? (no you don't)

Technically ethanol is not subsidy either, if you want to be pedantic. The point is government actually spends a LOT on a superpower military that provides an umbrella of defense for many nations, yet gives tax ADVANTAGES for some ethanol plants to support our food production.

But the real "subsidies" for sending dumb kids to college to be brainwashed by subsidized commie college profs ... that's just hunky dory? Or the "subsidy" for incompetent teachers that can't be fired to brainwash our kids into hating America? (in IL we MUST pay all their golden retirement bennies, even as everything else is shut down ... bennies they got by bribing union officials that bribe our government).

But sure, let's cut the knees out of all those programs that have given you weenies the best/safest/diversified food supply in the world. I can tell you farmers have to be competent on their own ... or they fail, unlike most of the unionized babied government workers. This farmer hate is pathetic. Ethanol is just one program to keep the food production base energized.

So much better to have China pay $4/bushel than $2/bushel. Most of that corn goes to beef ... so quit eating meat if you "really care" about feeding the world. sheesh

well congrats on getting out I guess. I actually moved back here a little less than 20 years ago. I'm "down with the struggle". ha

I can't make sense of your gold comment ... or how that crazy person is "one of mine". We have a fully fiat currency since Nixon, so the "feds" can print as much as they want regardless of Ft. Knox gold, but IL has to balance their budget, supposedly.

One solution that has a little attention ... "cold fusion". That is using quantitative easing to create all the money we need out of nothing ... no bonds that have to be sold, just add the money to the electronic ledger.

We paid the Continental Army with paper currency, so if you like going back to those days ... voila. Not sure lottery winners will like their IL colonial style paper, but it is what the whole federal government is operating on now ... so as you say "There you have it! Problems all solved."

Gould said "no subsidy for anything". Subsidy is a specific term perhaps, but our government funds things for the "common good". Ethanol is not a subsidy ... not a direct payment, just taxed at a lower rate, to encourage production in a certain area.

Military is closer to a real "subsidy" as it is completely funded by taxes. That is "pure subsidy". It is just a semantic argument that started with the misnomer of lower taxes being a subsidy. As if government taking less of the profit is the same as government taxing others to give it to the ethanol thang.

Ethanol is not "subsidized", so un-drop your jaw. Some items pay lower taxes than other things ... that is different than straight funding. But establishing consistent food producers is at least as important as being global policeman. If government ran all the farms, we'd probably be like Russia or Zimbabwe, even as gov union farmers went on strike for longer vacations, higher pay, safer conditions.

heh ... well it is (intentionally) "provocative", but it is not silly.

The Chicago School of Economics (if it was an exact thing) started teaching that only the bottom line mattered. (no obligation to country or "liberty"). That maybe was always true in a sense, but when government played along (politicians had their own greedy reasons) ... it became a problem.

The saying used to be "what is good for GM is good for America". You being one of the smart guys here, can surely see the problem of corporatism, which is what led to policy that propped up markets, at the expense of everything else.

"Free Trade" was the banner under which easy money policy led to "irrational exuberance", and that was way back in 1993 (or so). Trump in 1990 was testifying about the taxation problem (it's on CSPAN) and how tax incentives were bubbling up the market and depressing US (real estate especially) investment.

Smart guys like Bill Fleckenstein write books about the easy money problem, and deem guys like Greenspan to be the worst evils for America.

(that is just my brief summary, but I appreciate that my provocative statement got your attention. I basically believe it to be true though, even as I understand the good things that came from all that easy money. But the debt is also a real thing)

no, just the ethanol haters that don't understand the big picture, and that call it "subsidy".

One other "conservative" source dismayed me as well, a few weeks back. They said they calculated how many people died from starvation due to using corn for ethanol. ... well gee, are we responsible to feed the world?

AND, what about those cotton jeans ... people grow cotton instead of food? How many die so we can wear cotton jeans, did he calculate that?

It is just crazy ... mostly I just give up on those completely spurious arguments, but really, we could feed the world if we all quit eating meat, and bulldozed every acre into crop ground, and ... what else. Ethanol has became the "whipping boy" ... thank God we have fracking and brought the oil price down as the evil OPEC and gang tried to screw us ... but anyway.

yeah the mandate is close to "subsidy" in that sense. Choice is always better. But it is a real fuel that works fine in engines made for it, which is most. It made more sense when we were under "peak oil" conditions.

15 years ago Illinois was pushing a wine grape movement, sending out a couple viticulturists to get people/farmers to invest a few acres to grapes. It fell apart largely due to the wine grape glut ... which is supported by cheap foreign labor and "free trade". Sadly it is hard to get American help on the farm, to do horticultural type field work. Robots may offer a partial solution. I think a vital rural America is essential, ethanol was one tactic.

494 here is another smart guy ... Jim Rogers.

Biggest crash in history coming. Others have been saying such, but Rogers has been pretty good.

America First has broad implications, and broad applications. We have to support the real producers in America (that is coal and food and steel ... everything). So that is why the "blame ethanol" stuff is irritating. Do people not see our debt cliff, or market bubbles, on top of all the corruption?

Maybe it is already too late economically, and maybe "they" already run all government. I know a smart Berkeley guy who says America was toast long ago. Trump and "America First" is a last hope ... but there will be pain.

496 I think a vital rural America is essential,

I agree. And I have no problem with some governmental "help" in this. It's a matter of national security, to a good extent.

ethanol was one tactic.

This is where we split. There was nothing good about ethanol, ever - not to my mind. I would have been fine with many other methods of helping and sustaining American farms and production but ethanol is just not one of them.

497 And when I say "ethanol" I mean forcing it into gas, not just the idea of ethanol. I have no problems with anyone making ethanol but I just want the freedom to not have to buy it.

498 I used to know that kind of hardcore libtardarian who insists that everyone is a slave of the government. For a little bit I was that guy, thinking I was the prophet of profit. It's a popular ideology if you have a trendy urban job- or want work in a think tank. But it has little to offer anyone else, which might explain how a Clinton puppet highjacked the LP's #2 slot. And how President Trump utterly humiliated them.

Does anyone remember the global rice crisis back in 2008? Farm subsidies are a small price to pay to avoid that here.

PS: Claiming that Virginia agriculture/ government was always about freedom and "constitutional principles" should get you houndeed out of the room.

499 well I have my own level of hate for ethanol when I couldn't find non-ethanol gas, as I still have several small engines not running, which I largely blame on the ethanol component. But in larger vehicles, even riding mowers, it has never been an issue for me. My truck supposedly takes e-85, but I never tried it.

500 This article helps explain how we went off the rails with Friedman and the alleged "Free Trade, Deficits Don't Matter (in the end)" baloney. Everyone took advantage of us, corporations played to their tune. Buying up our assets instead of goods is not trade, it is conquering.

"When Congress debates what the Chinese government considers trade
distorting legislation, he states, it is not unusual for the Chinese
government "to pressure multinational companies to weigh in with
Congress to prevent the legislation from passing"
American companies give into such pressures because the Chinese
leverage them to do so in and it helps to ensure higher profits, at
least in the short run, for their shareholders and top managers."

501 Thank goodness this thread finally came to an end. A non-discussion of non-subsidies for ethanol (not directly subsidized, folks) and a spew of hate from ethanol haters -- who forget that 1) they can buy gas w/o ethanol (as I do for 2 cyl engs), and 2) some of us actually *like* 'gasohol'! Imagine that!!

All across Georgia's 6th Congressional District this fine morning, live-at-your-folks-homes Millennials are arising and smiling. "Today we vote!" they think, "Today we vote!"

Well done, Moms and Dads! Well done, indeed!
