Saturday Afternoon Chess/Open Thread (Featuring Dress Pr0n) 06-24-2017

dogs playing chess.jpg
"OK, so you know the loser has to go over to the Obamas' house for dinner, right?"

Good afternoon morons and moronettes, and welcome to the Saturday Afternoon Chess/Open Thread, the only AoSHQ thread with content specifically for all of us chess nerds who pay homage in the temple of Caïssa, goddess of the chessboard. Also, dress pr0n. Each week, I pick out a few lovely, modest, conservative dresses for the 'ettes to admire and appraise. And, for those of you who aren't nerdly enough for chess, you can use this thread to talk about checkers, or other games, or politics, or whatever you wish, only please try to keep it civil. Nobody wants to get in the middle of a pie fight on a Saturday afternoon.

Lovely Dresses, Goofy Hats

This week, I grabbed some photos from this link to the Queen's carriage parade at the Royal Ascot racing meet in England. Lots of fancy clothes, lots of dresses, and some are pretty outlandish. And hats. Click on that link to see the photos I didn't include. All of the men have to wear the Ascot hat as is traditional, but the women are free to indulge themselves as they see fit. I have never seen such ridiculous, goofy-looking hats that some of the women were wearing.

But enough about hats. On to the dress pr0n:

Solutions Update

Problem 1 - White To Play

20170624 - Problem 1.jpg
rbb2r1k/p3qp1p/1p2pp2/8/3P2Q1/P2B4/1P3PPP/R4RK1 w - - 0 1

Black doesn't have much of an answer to:

1.Qh4!

Note that there are three squares White could have moved his queen to, h3, h4 or h5. But h5 is the only destination square that will enable White to force the issue. If 1.Qh3 or 1.Qh5, then 1...f5 stops the attack. Black can't move f5 after Qh4 because of the immediate Qxe7.

1...Bxh2+

Black really has nothing better. He should probably just resign at this point.

2.Kh1 f5
3.Qxe7 and wins

Problem 2 - Black To Play

20170624 - Problem 2.jpg
8/4R1R1/7k/7p/7P/2q3P1/5P1K/8 b - - 0 1

Black is in deep kimchi here, so he pretty much has to go for the draw. A simplification would be disastrous: 1...Qxg7 2.Rxg7 Kxg7 and the 2-pawn advantage pretty much seals the deal for White.

Black's king is kind of in a restricted position, so Black tries to force a stalemate with

1...Qxg3+!

Any of the recapture moves Kxg3, Rxg3, or fxg3 results in stalemate.

White's only recourse is

2.Kh1

But then
2...Qg1+

3.Rxg1

Forced. And there's the stalemate.

Problem 3 - White To Play

20170624 - Problem 3.jpg
3k4/ppqbr3/2r1PQ2/8/8/P7/1P3PPP/3RR1K1 w - - 0 1

1. Qxe7+ Kxe7
2. exd7+ Kf6

Not 2...Kd8 3.Re8#. If 2...Kf7 then 3.d8=Q Qxd8 4.Rxd8

3.d8=Q+ Qxd8
4.Rxd8 and the rook advantage is enough for a win.

An alternate line that will get you to the same place is:

1.Qh8+ Re8
2.Qxe8+ Kxe8
3.exd7+ Kf7
4.d8=Q Qxd8
5.Rxd8 and wins

Problem 4 - White To Play

20170624 - Problem 4.jpg
1r1q3k/1bp1n1pp/3p4/4n3/4Nr2/1P1Q3R/P1P2PPP/5RK1 w - - 0 1

1.Nf6 Nf3+

There are a number of early missteps that will cause Black to lose early:

1...gxf6 2.Qxh7#
1...Rxf6 2.Qxh7#
1...g6 2.Rxh7#
1...h6 2.Qh7#
1...Qg8 2.Rxh7+ Qxh7 3.Qxh7#

2.gxf3

And now it gets a bit complicated:

If 2.Kh1 then Rh4 3.Qxh7+ (3.Rxh4 Ng5 (3...Nxh4 4.Qxh7#) 4.Rxh7+ Nxh7 5.Qxh7#) 3...Rxh7 4.Rxh7#

Back to the main line, which is:

2...Rg4+
3.fxg4 Be4 (3...Qg8 4.Rxh7+ Qxh7 5.Qxh7#)
4.Rxh7+ (4.Qxe4 Ng6 5.Rxh7#)
4...Bxh7
5.Qxh7# 1-0

Endgame of the Week

20170624 - Endgame.jpg
8/1p6/8/2P1B3/8/8/p2K4/1k6 w - - 0 1

1.Ba1! Kxa1

No other choice.

2. Kc2 b5
3. c6 b4
4. c7 b3+
5. Kxb3 Kb1
6. c8=Q a1=N+!

If 6...a1=Q then 7.Qc2#

7.Kc3 Nc2

If 7...Ka2 then 8.Qb8 Nb3 9.Qxb3+ Ka1 10.Qb2# is an alternate line.

8.Qf5 Ka2
9.Qxc2+ Ka1
10.Qb2#

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and past it into your chess app.

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

42 Gaming news: 'Zoe Quinn' van Valkenberg of Five-Guys infamy is once again hassling developers, this time for ever having been involved with #gamergate.

#gamergate was, of course, about corruption in the gaming press. Said gaming press has learnt nothing; they are again lying about #gamergate, that it was a harassment campaign of misogyny. Game journalism is still a cartel looking out for its own.

So, GamerGate is about to make a comeback. . .

(That's pretty much Anita Sarkeesian's own words, that #gamergate never went away, that it is still silencing women - although, some would prefer to call it challenging the lies from this particular sorry excuse for a woman. They refer to Camilla as the Duchess of Cornwall. Duke of Cornwall is one of Chuckles other titles. By the rules, she is the "Princess of Wales", since she's the consort of the Prince of Wales, but they don't call her that for PR reasons.

The rules about all these royal titles are convoluted, and ancient. The male heir to the throne is the "Prince of Wales", and the sovereign's first born son is the "Duke of Cornwall" (in England, but called something else in Scotland -- long history). Those are usually one and the same.

Now, the Princess of Wales is just the wife of the Prince. But now that've gone to absolute primogeniture (first born girl would be Queen Regnant -- succession follows birth order, not gender), it would be possible to have an unmarried girl who be the heir to the throne. But there's no official titles for that.

They'll come up with something if need be when the time comes.

86 "Princess Royal" is defined (IIRC) as the first born daughter of the sovereign. However, once a gal gets the title, she retains it until death. So if the current sovereign dies, and the successor has a daughter, she won't be called Princess Royal until the existing one dies.

The current Princess Royal is Princess Anne, Lizzy's only daughter.

William is the heir, not Harry. Every kid Kate pops out bumps ol' Harry down one more notch.

They also say they're not to going to call Camilla Queen.

By the rules, the wife of a king is a queen consort and gets the style "Your Majesty". It doesn't work that way for the hubbie of queen regnant.

But since Camilla is, well, all that mess, they say they're not going to do it.

This is the main reason I don't have TV or watch movies much anymore. I have no patience for propaganda disguised as entertainment. 108 Most European royalty are closely related.

The King of England was first cousins with Tzar Nicholas II; I think it was unconscionable that he and his wife and young children were left to be shot like rabid dogs.I can't remember why they weren't brought over; Nicholas probably wouldn't have left, but I think his family weren't allowed in for some reason. I make it sound like they showed up and were turned away...I think they just weren't invited, and they ought to have been IMHO.

Charles dilly-dallied around enjoying his freedom and Camilla got tired of waiting around. She wasn't a virgin, which might have been an issue, but I think the marriage would have been allowed. The first time they met, she is said to have told him that her gggrandmother was his ggggrandfather's mistress, so they should give it a go.

I think she is the one who picked Diana out, and I do not believe her and Charles' relationship ever stopped. I am glad they're together, and I think Diana could have handled a hideous situation slightly better, but it's a shame she was put through such anguish.

She's a splendid, wise jurist.

The committee rejected the Yale Law School grad, 61, for appointment to the post.

But she got the job anyway, and promptly went on the first of several medical leaves just a week after being sworn in to her $175,500-a-year job.

The job also provides $65,000 worth of annual health benefits, which the currently hospitalized Shollenberger has been putting to good use.

And then there's this:

An obese judge did not do his $193,000-a-year job for over three years because he was too fat - and will still retire with a hefty pension even though an ethics panel found he milked the system, The Post has learned.

Acting Supreme Court Judge Daniel J. McCullough, 65, stepped down last month, after a state ethics probe determined that he "persistently failed to report to work" since April 2014 instead of going on proper medical leave.

Had he taken such leave, McCullough would also have taken a pay cut. His decision to remain an "active" judge prompted the state Commission on Judicial Conduct to find last month that McCullough failed "to respect and comply with the law."

"He was basically forced out," a court source said.

Despite being pressured to leave, McCullough will take home a $143,000-a-year pension.

Slight quibble; the title "Prince of Wales" is given at the Sovereign's pleasure.

It can only be given to the Heir Apparent, but it is granted not inherited.

It's like the various Dukedoms; the Duke of York is always the second son, but it is at the Sovereign's pleasure. Prince Andrew was granted the title on the occasion of his marriage.

And Prince William was made Duke of Cambridge on the occasion of his marriage, as well; he was not born to it.

Again, labeling this logical, common sense, inarguable approach to the court's role "conservative" (as, of course, all reports do) merely distorts the picture. Same as the term "originalist".

These aren't merely schools of thought or particular takes on something, they are direct, well-founded approaches to performing a constitutional role in accordance with the actual constitution. Other approaches are lawlessness and indefensible usurpation, not "alternative" schools of thought.

George I (and the II probably) didn't even speak English.

And there were plenty of people who had a fit when Elizabeth II named her first born Charles, since there is no actual blood connection.

211 "Princess of Wales" is a *courtesy title* attached to the wife of the Prince of Wales according to the rules/law, whether written or traditional.

George VI, Elizabeth's father considered making her "Princess of Wales", because it was pretty obvious he and his wife weren't going to have a new son, and Elizabeth was going to be queen. But they didn't do it for whatever reasons. And she was never Princess Royal either, because her aunt was still alive until her father died.

Because of the new absolute primogeniture rules, the situation can well develop where they'll have a female heir apparent with living brothers and all that.

So, when that happens, they'll have to come up with something new.

Whether the female heir apparent will be called "Princess of Wales", who knows?

If Chuckles becomes king, William will then be Prince of Wales and Duke of Cornwall, and Kate will automatically become Princess of Wales. He will still retain Duke of Cambridge, but it will be just another lesser title.

The children will then get "Wales" taking precedence over Cambridge, ie "The Princess Charlotte of Wales".

There is no accounting for trends.

I still get French manicures, but they are not the height of style. I am not sure why they call them porn nails, but one does see them a fair bit on the ladies of that particular genre!

I can't stand the trend now for short dark nails. The dark and weird colors bother me more than the short part. I guess it really isn't just dark nails any more, you see a lot of lavender and pale blue and putty and such, too, especially in spring and summer. And I have seen some pretty stunning navy blue nails, but it just looks odd on really short nails to me.

I don't really like super long talons, but I don't like super short ones, either, like they've been bitten down to the quick..

White Women under 40 are between 85-95 percent feminist.

I also live in a college town so there is that as well.

I have been getting out more and more recently the last 4 months and have been unplugging from the Internet. I was going to go out again tonight, but I'm exhausted from the training and waking up at 6am. I have to wake up at 5:30am tomorrow to work on Depositions coming up this week.

I do appreciate your positive encouragement though.

As Tammy corrected, it has to with "Princess X" vs "the Princess of X".

That Charlotte was "Princess Charlotte of Wales", not "The Princess of Wales". She was the daughter of The Prince of Wales at the time of her birth.

The kids of "The Prince of X" are "princes/princesses of X", basically.

Not really; long nails were common for both genders among upper classes in many cultures, as a sign of not having to work or use ones own hands for menial tasks.

Long painted nails also signified whores at one point.

And I think the reason short nails are now popular has everything to do with texting and smart phones, as was pointed out above.

Also, makeup and high heels were both first worn regularly by males. French, undoubtedly.

Both my grandmothers, born in the mid 1890s, viewed nail fashion with disdain and disgust. There was a bit of "painted whore" in that disdain, but the main thing was they saw that as a frivolous, useless woman of leisure who couldn't do any actual work with her hands.

I did not know this. Still not pleased with the no nail trend. Men wearing high heels, probably because they wanted a calf muscle or be taller or both.

My ex wife is tall (5'9"). She should have been a hand model. Unbelievable perfect hands and long slender feminine fingers with a French Manicure. I noticed the past 3 years she has kept them short. It's a shame, really. I want to tell her that but she may be the original Jezebel Spirit so I keep a safe distance.

I was approached several times about being a hand model, but Daddy forbade it. And then I got married and didn't want to be away from Thor, and then the RA gave me Gigantor knuckles.

And now my poor hands, which are the only thing of true beauty I ever had, look like hell. Thor says they still look nice, but as we all know, love is blind.

I like nails that are not too short, not too long. But some length, for sure. 1/4 inch, maybe?

Mama would probably have done her nails if she didn't bite them so much, but she never wore makeup, either.

I think that was more about daddy thinking only whores painted up, though.

I seldom wear makeup. Wasn't allowed to as a teenager, so I never got in the habit. I do have a ton of lipstick and I love lipstick, but I usually forget to put it on when I leave the house!

I did wear mascara, eye liner, blush and lip gloss when we got married. Thor was sort of taken back; he prefers no makeup.

275 All the titles really belong to the sovereign. Queen Elizabeth is Queen of England and Scotland, Princess of Wales, Duchess of This That and the Other, and probably a list of other titles as long as my arm.

By courtesy, the heir of a titled noble is allowed to use one of the boss's surplus titles -- so the heir to the UK throne gets to be called Prince of Wales, and the heir to the Spanish throne is Prince of Asturias, and so on.

The sovereign can also grant Royal dukedoms to other family members, but I don't think they are hereditary. So I don't think Andrew's kids will continue to be Dukes of York.

When the sovereign dies, the heir steps up and gets all the list-as-long-as-my-arm titles, and can grant them out.

The dukedoms actually matter. There's property and (a little, mostly symbolic) authority to go with them. The courtesy titles are just something to make up for not having a proper last name like other people.

Posted by: Trimegistus at June 24, 2017 08:49 PM (Puwyi)

276 I don't think Andrew's kids will continue to be Dukes of York.

Andrew's kids are female, so they can't inherit the Duchy, nor are they able to have any other title on their own merit than the Princess they were entitled to at birth. Women can never be anything by birth other than Princess or Lady. (Or I suppose Queen, under certain circumstances) Duchesses, Countesses, and Marchionesses are wives; they are not born.

The Duchy of York would pass to Andrew's sons, if he had any, (For instance, William will be getting the Duchy of Cornwall from Charles at some point) but interestingly enough, it has never worked out that way. And it ceases to be a Royal Dukedom once an HRH no longer holds the title, I think.

Posted by: Tammy al-Thor at June 24, 2017 09:17 PM (tJeKM)

277 Cornwall can only be held by the first born son and heir apparent of the monarch. It does not pass on. Usually, the Duke of Cornwall goes on to be king. But if he dies before or something, it expires. William will likely be Duke of Cornwall, but it would have to given to him by the future King Charles.

Now, York would actually be hereditary, I think, but it has never had to for some reason.

Posted by: publius, the Persistent Poperin Pear at June 24, 2017 09:39 PM (8O3HH)

278

I looked it up. There have been cases of women with titles "in their own right" in the past. It's rare, but not impossible.

In modern times, they came up with "lifetime peerages", mostly baronies, and they've made quite a few women Baronesses.

But in the past, usually in some unusual situation where some some historical and important hereditary title was going to expire (revert to the crown) for lack of male heirs, or there was some sort of dispute over inheritance, the monarch granted it to one of the daughters to preserve and cement the line of inheritance.

279 Posted by: publius, the Persistent Poperin Pear at June 24, 2017 09:39 PM (8O3HH)

Yes, the Duchy of Cornwall has to go to the first born son and heir apparent; I guess I took "hereditary" too literally! I would imagine most of Charles' estates are thus entailed, although presumably something will have been acquired for Harry. I figured he'd get Highgrove at least, but that was bought by the Duchy.

On the other hand, since it was bought rather than being part of an inheritance/entailment, maybe it can be dispersed however Charles wants to?
