Monday Night ONT-Making the Sausage Edition

A lot of people have asked me how I go about writing the ONT (full disclosure: Nobody has asked me this), so I thought I'd lift the curtain and give y'all a glimpse at how the magic happens. My job entails being in front of the computer a lot, and a lot of this is dead time-I'm calling potential clients waiting for the phone to be answered, or I'm on hold with an insurance company-things like that. To amuse myself, I spend a lot of this time surfing the web. I always have my eye out for interesting or funny pictures or video to open the ONT with, and when I find one I save it. I have a whole file full of pictures like this:

smiles.jpg
The sun smiles, and the birds smile back

All during the week, if I find something that looks ONT worthy, I save it. I have a second browser open at all times, my “ONT browser”, and everything goes there. When the time comes to write the ONT, I have anywhere from a dozen to several dozen tabs to chose from. An ONT needs about a dozen links or clips (much more and things, good things, get overlooked. Thinks I thought long and hard about get ignored by you heathen bastards. Things I loved don't even get commented on. * sniff *) First thing I look at is to see if there's a theme buried there.

Tabs.jpg

If there is, great, that's the theme. If not, well then I start with the most interesting or funny links. (For the record, the above screen shot is not mine, it was sent to me in a report I asked Kurt Eichenwald to compile for me. I just used it to prove my point. Honest. Really. Would I lie about a thing like that?)

But where do I get the source material? Well, there are a bunch of places.

Twitter

Lots of people will tell you that Twitter is a dumpster fire. This is true. But remember, Las Vegas was a barren desert until Bugsy Siegel had the foresight to look at it and see an unlimited vista of crime, adultery, gambling and prostitution, and today millions of people live and work in Sin City (Don't tell anybody, but I prefer Den City). If Twitter is a dumpster fire, then it's a dumpster fire behind Ft. Knox, and the ashes are just filled with little nuggets of gold. Things like heroism:

And photobombs:

and cruel practical jokes:

The aid worker in the first clip's name is David Eubank, and his story is the stuff legends are made of. Hey Hollywood, that's your hometown newspaper, how about a film on his amazing life instead of trying to reboot My Mother the Car?

Twitter is also where I find stuff for the “Troll of the Week” segments, although I don't have one at the moment. It's also good for links to stories, like the LA Times one just above. Honestly, I could mine Twitter for ONT material forever, but I do check other sources.

Imgur

Now Imgur is the place to go for gifs. Believe me, you can spend literal hours on Imgur, just clicking the “next post” button. The community votes on the best ones, so just go to the front page and start clicking. I'll see you back here around dawn. Imgur is also where I host all of the wacky waving arms and legs gifs I use here. The Pixy image hosting system has the capacity of a mouse's bladder, so anything that moves pretty much has to go over there.

And this one is really just too cute. And clever.

Tumblr

What do you find on Tumblr?

No, not that (more on that later). Tubmlr is blogs, memes, gifs, etc. It's highly politicized-almost as much as Twitter- but at Tumblr you get conversations, and a real chance to see exactly how clever people can be. Like this exchange: (Ironicaly hosted on Imgr).

Or this:

tumblr.jpg

Contributions

People send me stuff for the ONT. This, for example, is fastfreefall's new bike riding shirt:

shirt.jpg

and the COBS were talking about this amazing video in our own sooper sekrit COB email:

I just wonder what the planes landed on.

Themes

I don't always do a theme for the ONT, but sometimes they're fun. I'll tell you how this one came about. I saw the clip from above of the lady watching her phone and walking into a cellar on Twitter. “Ha!” thought I, “That should be on Tumblr!”, and from that awful pun came this ONT.

Making the Sausage

So then I aggregate the links, write a little commentary on each one, which is harder than it should be for two reasons. #1, I'm disgraphic, so I can't spell cat if you spot me the k and the t. This is why my wife proof reads my threads. She's gone today, so I expect this one to be worse than usual. #2, I can't touch type. That's right, I'm just like an Ozark nymphomaniac (she's a-huntin' pecker), and it takes work for me to bang these out. I'm actually pretty fast at typing, but I look at the keyboard and not the screen. Then I have to look back up and scan for typos.

After that I resize all the pics so they don't blow out the margins, make any memes that I want to use and then wash the whole post through the unicode to HTML converter to kill any black diamonds, and viola! One ONT, ready to go.

Tonight's ONT brought to you by Lib tears:

The Yahoo Group got bored reading this self indulgent crap 2 paragraphs in and went to have a drink.

2 Reposting from last night's ONT:

I'm in the Jacksonville area this week until Friday evening. Well, Atlantic Beach/Mayport. I know there are a few Morons out this way. Anyone want to get together for a drink some evening this week? I propose Cap'n Odie's on Mayport Road, because Ace of Spades Lifestyle and it's within stumbling distance from my hotel.

Any takers? I'm free every evening until Friday.

36 An Evergreen Madness

There was a time when normal people could delude themselves that the hardcore madness of the Left was concentrated in a few self-segregating colonies of madness. Even in higher education, one could delude themselves that most departments and majors as most colleges were still teaching things of academic worth, with the Progressive insanity limited to the odd social studies department or a some oddball colleges or universities. Such a time is over.

I got my CCW when people still raised their eyes in Indiana for getting one. Way before 9/11.

I paid $325 for it. Cash. Out the door. From Rajo's Guns in Evansville, Indiana.

Heh. A couple who are friends of ours received an offer pending a house inspection. It's just an ordinary house, built in the 70's. Nothing remarkable about it. The 'inspector' came back with a 128 page list of 'concerns' and 'problems'. The potential buyers were so freaked out about it that they withdrew.

I flipped through the report (contained photos with circles and arrows), it was filled with petty crap that is just plain normal to a forty year old house.

Our house was 11 years old. Inspector report was 70+pages. The buyers identified like 6 things they wanted fixed. One we already knew about and had it in the plans to fix (new windows and the installers screwed up one window). So they asked for the window and $300. We signed as fast as humanly possible.

162 Heh.

Par for the course for their writers. They have no idea what to do with any of their talent. They still can't figure out what to do with the biggest talent in the biz and it's been obvious for almost a year that the fans view him as a heel.

203

One time at Carter Battalion camp Idi Amin and I were minding our own business, walking around with glass in our shoes to toughen our feet, and perhaps obtain Enlightenment, when this GIANT rabbit runs out of the bushes, climbs Idi's leg and try to bite his pair-a-dice off!

The damn thing was a rabbit sasquatch, covered in matted greasy fur full of ticks and libtard droppings, and smelled like a dumpster full of dead hippies after a bong explosion in a Dead concert outhouse.

It was savaging Idi's crotch, somehow desperate yet furious by his danglin beauties. Idi was trying to set it on fire with his flint and steel but the sparks wouldn't take.

I grabbed a bucket full of squid - they were used as punishment fucks in the Battalion - well, punishment except for Idi, who seemed to like a good squiding from time to time - and started beating the rabsquatch.

It turned and hissed at me letting me see into it's eyes. yes, the depths of it's soul was evil, demonic... as God is my witness, I say June Carter's hoo-haw in that rabbits eyes.

Well, I lost it and was about to run when out of nowhere a giant demented duck ran in and blasted the thing with a shotgun!

That put the rabsquatch off it's game and it hopped away, hissing like steam escaping. unfortunately the duck's aim was off and he blew idi's balls six ways to Sunday. We spent the rest of the night gathering the pieces up and sewing them together. they worked again, but they were ever after Idi Amin's Frankennuts...

230 Honestly, the Carrie Fisher news makes me really sad. When she passed, I remember thinking how absolutely tragic it was.

BUT, that at least she had exorcised her demons, she has a super close relationship with her daughter and mother; she was on top of the world as far as back in the center of the film universe, with her being a major factor in the current Star Wars iteration.

I took some comfort in the fact that she had gotten her life together, and was able to enjoy her golden years clean and sober and having a re-birth of sorts. So, yeah, to hear that....either she hasn't been as clean and sober as she said, OR this new wave of fame and work caused a relapse...just makes me sad.

233 What do you find on Tumblr?

I've spent some time on Tumblr. It is a vast area of the internet that is a world unto itself. Most of us don't realize it's there, and most of the denizens of Tumblr don't seem to realize that there is more to the internet than Tumblr.

234 Mister Metokur really distilled down the crazy for his latest video, a chronicling of one insane Randy Stair.

This dude was a transsexual brony who thought he could becoming a ghost girl if he killed enough people. Sadly, he was able to kill 3 people at the supermarket he worked at, but given that he had hundreds of rounds of ammo for his shotgun and trained with it, it could have been much worse.

235 I know every generation says this, but I swear to God it's gotten worse in my lifetime. What happened to people's manners?

I'm an insurance agent. A big part of my job involves calling people who want insurance. These are not random people, mind you, these are people who went online, entered their names and phone number, and clicked a big button "Please contact me about insurance". I never hide who I am either, my caller ID is my number. I'm a financial professional, how professional is it to hide who you are?

So, a few minutes ago, 10:30 at night. My phone rings.

"Hello"
"Who is this?"
"This is <my name>, who is this?"
"I don't know a <my name>. I got a call from this number"
Remember, it's 10:30 at night.
"I'm a local insurance agent in <my town>. Earlier today (unsaid-during normal business hours), I was calling people who had inquired.."
<click>

And this wasn't even a late one. I've gotten calls after midnight (not often), but these kind of callbacks happen a coupe of times a month. Now sometimes people are nice, and I've gotten more than a few of them as clients (Which is why I don't answer "You called me, asshole, who the fuck are you?"), but really, so rude. If I miss a call, I call back "Hi, this is <my name>, I missed a call from this number about X minutes ago".

What the hell happened to common courtesy? It doesn't just make my life easier, I'm a big boy, I can take it, <i>it makes your own life easier as well</i>.

Now I feel like checking my call records and finding out who this asshole is and putting him on a Nickleback fans calling list.

Just saw breaking news at CNN, the Dems have decided to give up on impeachment, at least for Trump's first term. Instead they're now going to go with a little-known ancient process called "peachment." Sen. Chuck Schumer defended the practice: "Hey, what could be more patriotic?!? We're just trying to offer our president healthier snacks!!"

If I know I'm calling a business, I will think nothing of calling in the middle of the night. Even if I know damn well they are closed, I figure voicemail will pick up. If I just want to find out their hours or whatever, most times, the voicemail will tell me that. Or, if I'm so inclined, I can leave a message.

It surprises me that you would answer your business line in the middle of the night, since it sounds like anything that might come up in the middle of the night, a claim or whatever, could wait until business hours.

Well, I got it fired up again today. Had to put 24 volts to the starter to make it crank fast enough. It started, and didn't sound too bad. But after I put about 4 gallons of water into the cooling system, enough to bring the level in the overflow tank up to the line, the tank looked like it was boiling. Huge bubbles of air rising and bursting in it. Blown head gasket for sure.

I put it in gear and drove it to a more permanent parking spot and shut it down. Did get a nifty Pioneer stereo out of it. And the engine is a rebuildable core, for sure. Just no way it can be used as-is, no way, no how.

They don't know it's a business. It's just a number on their phone with my name. I have had a couple of people call me late with just your logic. They are usually mortified when I answer. These don't bother me a bit.

It's not my business line (I have one in my office, but this isn't it), it's my cell phone. And it's not people calling that bothers me, in fact that bothers me not the tiniest little bit either. Really. I want them to call me. I'm up until midnight at least, anyway, and people that get me this late are impressed that they did, and more likely to do business with me. I'd rather talk to a client that can make me money, attacking Rome in Civ V can wait 5 minutes.

No, what bothers me is the rudeness. Hey, you called me. Identify yourself politely and go from there. If everyone called me back the way I call missed calls back, you wouldn't hear a peep out of me, even if they called at 11 PM. But "Who dis?" Who the fuck calls someone like that? We sold our previous house to a limp dick liberal and his wife. Limp dick's father did all the negotiation, and obviously was the one paying, while limp dick stood there with his finger up his ass, and it turned out he was unemployed.

I wondered whether limp dick's sole contribution to the family was to act as a sperm donor, but then I saw his kids, who were very obviously adopted and not his, so he wasn't even a sperm donor.

Apparently his sole contribution to the whole outfit was to turn food into shit.

Press F8 repeatedly as it's booting up from a cold start. You'll need to do this several times, since Microsoft decided that it was okay to ignore user inputs most of the time and go on booting towards a dead-end. They really don't think a lot of their users... or techs... (but at least it's not Apple. UGH.)

That should get you into a different menu, where you might have options for system restore, factory reset, or "boot to windows". Try boot to windows first. I don't know why, but that's fixed more problems than it ever should have. If that doesn't work, try system restore. If that doesn't work, do the factory reset.

If that doesn't work, judge the market value of the laptop. If it's worth less than $300, don't bother getting it repaired, just get a new cheap one to replace it.

376 MS changed the NT boot system with Vista, introducing "Boot manager". Before that, it was Ntldr (plus some other files, depending), controlled by the "Boot.ini" text file.

With Vista and later, it became a complicated mess using the "BCD" database, which is in the registry format. They make a number of GUI programs that can allow you to edit, such as EasyBCD, and then VisualBCD.

If you have only one OS, the boot menu is disabled. You can add a timeout with (with admin privileges) with the command "bcdedit /timeout [value]".

For example "bcdedit /timeout 10" will give 10 seconds before the default is booted.

With Windows 8 they added this enhanced graphical bootmanager mode. It actually boots a minimal windows kernel and system just to display the boot menu.

I always turn that off. But I've got a shit ton of boot options. And only multiple hard drives which have different boot manager configurations.

It's a complicated mess and I shudder at the thought of trying to learn all that from scratch.

Sorry i was walking around and medicating the old horse with COPD.

Thank you kindly for the well wishes. Funny thing about the way i imprint them, i pull baby into my lap and play with the feet and ears until they relax. Mom and i are good enough friends she just hangs around. I have produced four lap horses this way. The only one i didn't imprint was a bitch to shoe her hind feet. Lesson learned. All the rest we messed with feet till they thought it was cool to just hand em to us. But the four lap horses would cuddle in your lap as babies, and sleep under you like a mattress as adults.

I think between 5th and 8th grade. Put it towards the later end of primary education, and really hammer the methodology in, particularly the part where the facts and results determine whether the hypothesis is rejected, amended, or accepted.

So much of Leftist thinking revolves around starting with the conclusion, then cherrypicking or outright fabricating the data to justify it.

We'll also need to bring back Civics or American Government classes, and probably philosophy classes that give people a grounding in rational, objective thought instead of the subjective BS the Leftoids push.

418 The problem with Them Kids These Days On My Lawn is that they learn history too late - it's lame-ass Social Studies until sixth grade - and they learn the lessons of that history much later, and when they learn it, it's that utopian autist Plato teaching it.

So we get a whole load of idealists full of Feelz showing up at the DMV to register to vote, after which time they contribute to our government in much the same fashion a schoolbus full of second graders contributes to the neighbourhood swimming-pool.

Speaking of CAGW crap, I can't believe it.

For the longest time the warmists denied that there had been a Roman Period Climate Optimum but finally had to concede it existed. (I think they downplayed it pretending that it only affected Europe mind you.) But today I watched a documentary on the Roman Empire (part two of a short series) by Mary Beard. And she claimed that Roman industry like silver mining in Spain caused the increase in methane (shown in Greenland ice cores) that made the warm period happen!!! So the Romans caused the Global Warming that made their time period so successful.

It's so full of shit on so many different levels that I couldn't help but repeat it aloud during the rest of the documentary. It's too bad because there was plenty of interesting information in it but I was just incredulous at the backwardness of that "belief".

For St. Stanislaus pierogis (Youngstown OH) the secret ingredient is the
sweat of the lunch ladies who are boiling them in the Church's basement
kitchen.

For a variety of reasons my Uncle Milt used to do the pierogies with the ladies in the basement of the Church. For years. They loved him. Husbands and children would pass away, tragedies would come and go. Lots of love as well as sweat and blood went into those pierogies.

BTW, he knew more about women than anyone I know.

If they keep comparing Trump to Caesar, he may just come to the conclusion that if he's going to be accused of it, he might as well actually do it.
