RIP: Otto Warmbier, Returned from North Korea in a Coma after 17 Months Detention, Dies Days After His Return

Thanks, Kim!

Incidentally, Warmbier's fellow roommate recently spoke with the press and said Warmbier had done absolutely nothing wrong to warrant his imprisonment and abuse by the North Koreans.

He says Warmbier didn't steal that propaganda poster that the North Koreans say he did -- and used as a pretext to sentence him to 15 years of hard labor, and a fatal coma.

Their second night in Pyongyang was New Year's Eve and the whole group went out into the city square before coming back to the hotel for more drinking. This is the night that Warmbier allegedly committed the offense inside the hotel for which he would later be given a sentence of 15 years hard labor.

The charge was that Warmbier allegedly went into a staff-only area of the hotel and tore down a propaganda banner hanging on the wall, intending to steal it. Two months later, North Korean state media broadcast a staged event showing a tearful Warmbier confessing to that crime and begging for forgiveness, clearly under duress.

Gratton said that in the four days they spent together, Warmbier never said anything about a banner and that he saw zero evidence that Warmbier was planning any such act -- quite the opposite. The first Gratton heard of the alleged attempted theft was when it was mentioned in news reports weeks later. Gratton and Warmbier weren't together 24 hours each day, but they traveled together during the day and hung out each night.

"I've got nothing from my experiences with him that would suggest he would do something like that," he said. "At no stage did I ever think he was anything but a very, very polite kid."

It's not snark. It's an impassioned plea: DON'T GO TO NORTH KOREA!

How could it possibly be worth the risk? You want Korea, go to South Korea. Go to Normal, not Crazy/Savage Korea.

It's hard to get that through the heads of the "adventurous," but it could be a matter of life or death.

58 There are dozens of legit reasons to reduce North Korea to a wasteland uninhabitable for the next thousand years. Tragic as this is (whatever the facts of how he came to be arrested), this ain't one.

Though I'm open to ways to make them hurt for this.

59 I've been to about 50 countries, some of them kind of dicey. I'll admit that there's a cachet about going to places where rebels control the territory or the government is hostile to the U.S. but you can do it in relative safety if you do your homework and exercise judgment.

That said, I've had an opportunity to go to North Korea but I turned it down because the leadership is completely unpredictable and I was afraid of getting taken off the plane on the way out for reasons that were completely outside of my control, like Warmbier was. There's nowhere that I'm that eager to see.

We can ignore it and still have some sympathy for the kid and his family. Having sympathy doesn't make you weak. Not having sympathy doesn't make you strong -- it just means you're cold-hearted, which is a kind of weakness.

The message I read in the message is that Fat Boy will continue to be provocative. He leads a pariah nation that must be dealt with as such.

The Chinese need to do more. Else nukes for the South Koreans, if they'll take them, and certainly for Japan.

I read that article, and his roommate supposes a lot, but has very little in the way of facts to back it up.

Nothing excuses the NK government's murder of an American citizen, but the kid could have done what they accused him of doing.

Think back to when you were a 21-year-old college student. You may have done equally stupid things. It's certainly not outside the realm of possibilities.

You can't make anything that happens over there make sense in a Western, linear, cause-effect, logical way. They simply do not think that way. South Koreans don't either. And I don't know enough about the Chinese, but I suspect they don't either.

It's like the North Korean sub that sunk the South Koream ship a few years ago. I'm quite confident that firing the torpedo made sense to that sub commander. He was probably revenging his grandfather whose ship was sunk by the South Koreans in 1950, or something like that.
The entire ideology of juche makes no sense. Autarky has never worked anywhere, particularly communist autarky. It doesn't matter. It's North Korea's and it was invented by grandfather Kim. That's all you need to know.
Don't try to make any sense of this. It is literally senseless.

The poor kid was naive to a fault, and for North Korea to use him as a statement against America, as I suspect occurred, should not go unpunished. The problem is finding a way to do so sufficiently without setting off a powder keg.

93 Maybe having a child today makes this news even more difficult, and maybe it's that I have a toddler at home. Otto Warmbier was somebody's child. Going to NK might not be wise, but it's something he was free to do, and in no universe should it have led to his murder. And that's what this was. Murder.

We should go in there and put the heads of all resisters on spikes.

Posted by: CPT11A at June 19, 2017 05:46 PM (njAaQ)

94 Nothing excuses the NK government's murder of an American citizen, but the kid could have done what they accused him of doing.

Think back to when you were a 21-year-old college student. You may have done equally stupid things. It's certainly not outside the realm of possibilities.

That being said, I would love it if Trump cut a deal with the Chinese to knock the fat fuck off in exchange for a new iPhone factory or whatever....

I sort of agree

He probably did something stupid (considering he went to NK in the first place, he obviously lacks judgement) and pissed off the wrong person.

Completely undeserved and was murdered over probably something trivial.

I just don;t know what you do with NK unless you want to blow $10 trillion dollars in aid and a possible nuclear exchange.

133 I remember watching Warmbier on CNN pleading for mercy in the North Korean court what seems only a short while ago. Turns out he was pleading for his very life - clearly, to no avail.

The Kim family simply needs to die. Every single one of them above the age of 15 needs to be eliminated.

Final thought; I've heard more than one Marx quoting college student bloviate about how North Korea was being victimized by the West due to racism, sexism, imperialism and capitalism.

I have a strong suspicion that some professor of Warmbier's must have convinced him and his co-travellers that North Korea was a victim of Western propaganda, and that a visit to Pyongyang would be a poke in the eye of racist, sexist, capitalist, imperialist America.

Hopefully, eyes have been opened now.

287 The NORKs never paid any price for boarding the USS Pueblo and jailing the 83 US sailors in 1968. One sailor was killed during the attack. They tortured the crew for almost a year before being released. The USS Pueblo is in Pyongyang and is still listed as an active USNavy ship. We did not do anything then so the NORKs probably aren't too worked up about our response for torturing and killing a 22 year old US college kid. Whatever bad decisions he made and whatever he may have done he didn't deserve to be reduced to a vegetative state near death. At least he made it home and was with his family. RIP Otto.

Girl was 17 and killed by a 22 yo man - who is Hispanic. Beat her to death with a baseball bat and dumped her body into a pond. She was in a group of other Muslim girls.

I don't know what to make of it all. My guess is that there was a relationship and it was a crime of passion.

I had a remote starter on my car when I lived up north so I could warm up the car in the winter. Now it's nice to have one here to cool the car down in the summer.

435 Like any cult, the Great Leader of the Norks has to do something appalling every now and then, so that the justifiable outrage of the public can be spun as oppression and discrimination against his cult members. Same as the Westbrook Baptist Church. Same as the religion of peace. The outside doesn't matter to the Leader, other than as a mirror that reflects how much power they have to make a greater power react to them. The real reason is always to isolate their cult members, and keep them devoted to and dependent on the Leader. Great Leader needs to be killed or ignored. I think the prezzy tried the ignore route. Trump is giving Kim all the attention he could wish for. Ignore, or kill, or respond with a sunken ship for each attention getting tantrum. And not a single press release or speech.

447 For many years these Sailors stood the watch. While some of us were in our bunks at night, these Sailors stood the watch.

While some of us were in school learning our trade, these Sailors stood the watch.

Yes. even before some of us were born into this world these Sailors stood the watch.

In those years when the storm clouds of war were seen brewing on the horizon of history, these Sailors stood the watch.

Many times they would cast an eye ashore and see their family standing there needing guidance and help,
needing that hand to hold during those hard times but they still stood the watch.

They stood the watch for many years. They stood the watch so that we, our families and our fellow countrymen could sleep soundly in safety, each and every night knowing that these Sailors stood the watch.

Today we are here to say, Shipmates the watch stands relieved. Relieved by those you have trained, guided, and led. Shipmates you stand relieved we have the watch

Taiwan would be too provocative with China though it's the one with the most acute and direct check on the ChiComs. Freeing Japan is the best of bad options. I firmly believe all three are 'four turns of a torque wrench" from being nuclear states. Japan has a robust space launch industry and could easily modify (or already has) several of their designs for delivery systems. RoK and Taiwan are both capable of developing ballistic missiles - but that would take some time. Both cloud be well served by artillery or bombs as well.

Looking at it from their perspective - this belligerency gives them the best excuse to join the nuclear club, and with a growing threat from China - why not. They could of course continue to trust us ...

On the other hand, my most sincere and heartfelt derision, disdain and disgust for the putrid pustule noted as Mortimer....
Good riddance to that heartless mofo.

492 My first thought is that we turn all of North Korea into a glowing nuclear wasteland. But there are a lot of innocent people there who deserve a better life than the Kim family business has inflicted on them.
How about drones start to mysteriously explode around Nork government and military buildings? We don't know anything about them but if we get Kim dead or alive, we will make sure they stop.

493 Lesson to be learned: never go to places like North Korea, Afghanistan, Iran, etc, etc, etc. I feel very sorry for this kid, who was just a victim of North Korea's ruling family's utter insanity.

494 Since the topic seems to be the Norks, I'll recommend the book "Nothing to Envy" by Barbara Demick once again.

495 The kid went with the "Young Pioneers" North Korean tour group.

"Young Pioneers" in the Communist hellholes are their analogue to the "Hitler Youth." (Or the other way around, since the National Socialists copied the Communists in many ways.)

497 When visiting norkland, the USMC is the only qualified tour operator.

498 Please don't go to Iran, either.

btw, North Korea practices forced labor chattel slavery on a mass scale. Truly Evil.

499 Who the fuck goes to North Korea for vacation? Mexico is dangerous enough. But NORTH KOREA!

500 Otto Warmbier made a MULTITUDE of mistakes.

1) He went to North Korea.
2) He took the poster. I don't care what the roommate said, there was enough testimony from other people around him at the time - his church people who had asked him to bring one back, for example - to make it pretty clear that he did in fact do it.
3) He somehow never clued in to what "police state" actually means.
4) He begged for mercy. Thugs and bullies love that, and never grant it.

Quite a lot of what happened to him can be laid at the feet of people who taught him to be an idiot and encouraged him to do idiotic things. There's also the portion of the blame that can be assigned to people who ought to go up in a nuclear flash ASAP. But the balance of it rests with one person, Otto Warmbier by name, who as an adult man of 22 years old should have known that he was doing a series of things that were each utterly fucking stupid, and that stacked together made this sort of outcome far more possible.

What happened to him is terrible.

But.

Stupidity kills. Don't be stupid. Don't be Otto Warmbier.

501 "I feel very sorry for this kid, who was just a victim of North Korea's ruling family's utter insanity."

That's the only thing he was a victim of?

Not his own arrogance? His privilege? His blind eye to human suffering in North Korea? His inability to recognize evil? His willingness to throw his own life away?

What if an innocent Nork subject had been blamed for the poster theft? They could have been tortured to death, or sent to a prison camp for ten years.

This privileged white guy saunters in, oblivious to the point of arrogance, making a mockery of the tremendous suffering of people born in North Korea, and giving hard American dollars to the Nork regime that can be used to fund criminal operations and terrorism around the world... and people around are throwing a pity party for him.

502 PDT: Look, Kim, if you give us Otto Warmbier back, you can have another American in return.

Kim: OK, You give me Dennis Rodman, and I'll give back Otto Warmbier, in as is condition.

503 We love our sublet in Acapulco, MX.

Especially the 10 foot tall, three inch thick glass doors that line the front.

It's in the 'tourist section', and we've never had any problems.
