8 Nice pastoral, like an illustration in a good children's book.

Very pretty and pleasant to place on the wall of the dining room.

looks like a cartoon.

Went on a four day bender; didn't eat, didn't sleep, just read the words of Nathan Lowell, and he writes a lot of'm. If you get taken in by the characters, you will read every word Lowell writes. At least, I did.

The contrasts between the idealized, and somewhat naive point of view, made the return to reality more than jarring. I'm still ignoring the news, and still trying to get my thoughts collected.

The idyllic and pastoral scene in the painting doesn't really exist, assuming you see the scene as idyllic and pastoral.

My method of mole removal is simple. Peel a single clove of garlic. Cut lengthwise. Before going to bed, place half clove over mole and cover with band aid. Avoid sleeping in close proximity to spouse. Sleep. Wake up. Remove band aid and clove of garlic.

Ignore mole for about a week. Finally take a look. Mole gone.

There is some science behind why this works.

Regarding gerrymandering --

I got back into researching my family history lately and, unfortunately, there were a large number of folks in my southern Germany feed that settled in Cook County, Illinois and then were stupid enough to stay there. Eventually in my search activity I had to use maps of Chicago's wards to figure out who was where.

Compare and contrast:

Chicago Wards from 1870 to 1930 -- http://www.alookatcook.com

Chicago Wards today (actually 2012) -- http://preview.tinyurl.com/y7s7y52d

The bright green monstrosity that is Ward #2 is especially blatant. Just who are the gerrymander junkies these days?

Yeah, no offense to the ladies, but once upon a time it was permitted to say that SOME women could not be trusted to make important decisions, because they don't factor logic and reason into their thought process.

It remains true, that if women did not have the vote, not a single Democrat, perhaps since FDR, would have been elected President, and there would essentially NEVER be a Democrat majority in Congress.

It seems that Kirk Douglas' son Eric tried to enter show business, but had problems with drugs and booze.

The story goes that, attempting a stand-up career in the 1990s, he debuted at the notorious Comedy Store in London. His act was bombing, and in frustration, he yelled into the mic, "You can't do this to me! I'm the son of Kirk Douglas!"

Immediately, an audience member stood up and shouted back, "No, I am the son of Kirk Douglas!".

And at that, the entire audience stood up, repeating the line and driving Douglas off the stage.

I had a real prize over the weekend. Three calls from the same call center, obviously the same guy each time, giving a different name that in no way matched up with the South Asian accent.

The "Do Not Call" list is such a bad joke. I'm sure it's just getting sold as a "valid phone numbers" list...

It's a weird story - some kid on a bike pissed off the illegal, so he got out of the car and chased the biker and the rest of his gang w/a baseball bat. He caught up to the muslim gal first, so she was the one beaten. How the heck kidnapping got added to the story is a mystery. Think there's more to it than that?

The US has shown itself to be an unserious and unreliable country, in any overseas matters, so rational decisions involve limiting exposure to our behavior. Not a fan of Ford and Chrysler; both are UAW shops, plus Chryslers are not the best mechnically.

Honda has a higher resale value than Toyota, but is generally more expensive. However, when I compared a Rav4 and a CRV several years ago, the interior of the Rav4 was much nicer.

I'm on my third Toyota, and still have my 1999 Camry. Love it.

Toyotas are made by non-union labor in the US but the transmission. Don't ever plan on buying from an American car company again, due to mechnical issues with a variety of vehicles over the decades.

We have a Rav4 and love it. They inexplicably stopped making the V6 version a few years ago - is this a way to meet newer fuel efficiency standards? We're holding on to ours until it dies, even though the dealership has tried to entice us to trade it in (no doubt because people want a used V6).

347 Last night, soninlaw came over to replace all the spark plugs in my old Ford Windstar (2001) because youngest couldn't get back to her 2nd job when car check engine light came on. Bless his heart (unironically) because my car knowledge consists of getting the oil changed every 3 mos and whatever fluids need changing at the same time. Went to a local Autozone, plugged it in, and the consensus was that spark plugs hadn't been changed in a long time.

348 324 Yesterday's art was all blurry and down-and-to-the-right brushstrokes.

Today's art is all crisp and down-and-to-the-left terrain.

The art thread: not necessarily fair, but balanced. Or maybe teeter-tottering?

If I have anything to contribute, I'll let you know.

The other difference is that Corot was a wonderful painter, and Pissarro fils was...not. Seriously, just put the two paintings side by side. This is a wonderful painting.

To ask the question is to answer it.

Because cars of that nature are bought by poseurs who have a need to be seen in something new, expensive, and exclusive. Once the newness wears off, so does the reason for owning it. And the cost of parts and service remains sky-high, so the secondary market is small, because smart buyers avoid them like the plague.

Japanese only here.

If you look at the stats from places like Consumer Reports (if you believe them) the most reliable vehicles in general are Asian. I've had Subarus as well, they' a bit more expensive to fix than Toyotas, and have the whole lesbian vibe going on now. So.. no.

Buy Japanese, or more accurately buy American made cars from a Japanese company. No bailouts and no unions that fund Democrats.

Toyota is the best in terms of reliability, and I've owned a lot of brands.

The best bargain though is Hyundai.

Regarding the RAV4, the wife's has about 110K miles. It's decent, but its a bit too low for my likes and runs like a 4 cylinder.

i looked into it and just maintenance for a bentley, not repairs, is just absurd - $500 for a yearly oil change & filter; new tires every 20 years ($thousands); brake repinings or more serious work 5-10,000. just unreal.

but another factor may be it's too new to be collectible.

but it's a beautiful and solid car and a huge depreciation.

Luxury cars of any make have high depreciation. Once they become the least bit shabby, the original owners get rid of them.

And Bentley is part of the Rolls Royce family, but it's not a Rolls. So, double whammy.

Some new cars are collectible; Ferrari for sure.

Oops, I posted before I wrote my comment. I think that Otto W., like many young Americans, really didn't grasp what "totalitarian dictatorship" means. Apparently he went though a travel agency named "Young Pioneers" which specializes in setting up tours for young people in "countries your mom doesn't want you to go to." Like NK. And Syria.

Yeah, it's dumb and that agency is reprehensible. But it speaks to the desire some young people have for danger and excitement. OW was motivated by the same impulse that drives other people to take up extreme sports. In earlier generations, he would have been an explorer.
