I mean it!

Wow. What a jaw-dropping week. Hard to keep up. In addition to the news items we've seen at AoSHQ, I was accidentally exposed to the Facebook page of an avowed communist. He lives in Canada. He was the only new lefty follower not blocked by a guy I follow who has some interesting ideas. In other words, this communist is a "nice" communist, not given to automatic abuse of those with other opinions. Rare. He said that Marxism was a way to analyze society - not a way to organize society. But wouldn't Lenin turn over in his grave (if he had a grave) to see how the USA rejected his message? Heh.

There were posts on his page demanding that imperialist Canada just leave poor Venezuela alone. There was an old video touting the ability of Soviet scientists to revive the severed head of a dog. There were posts of admiration for North Korea(!) including a clip from an old movie about a little Korean girl selling flowers and the Japanese occupation.

The posts on this Facebook page sent me on a search for context at The People's Cube. Why the nostalgia for the USSR among young communists at this time, for example?

Didn't help much with figuring out the Canadian communist, but during my visit to The People's Cube I noticed their news sidebar. I found this follow-up to California's official response against President Trump's ordered review of national monuments. You can't reverse the executive orders of other presidents creating national monuments, said the Attorney General of California. You can only make new monuments, or make them bigger. So:

Trump signs executive order making California and New York national monuments; residents have two days to vacate

Guess this weekend is going to be busier than I thought.

Meanwhile, back in the real world the oligarchs of Sacramento and Silicon Valley are cooperating in California's descent into socialism.

California's progressive regime of severe land-use controls has helped to make the state among the most unaffordable in the nation, driving homeownership rates to the lowest levels since the 1940s. It has also spurred a steady hegira of middle-aged, middle-class families -- the kind of tax-burdened people Gov. Jerry Brown now denounces as "freeloaders" -- from the state. They may have access to smartphones and virtual reality, but the increasingly propertyless masses seem destined to live in the kind of cramped conditions that their parents and grandparents had escaped decades earlier. . . .

The oligarchs of the Bay Area have a problem: They must square their progressive worldview with their enormous wealth. They certainly are not socialists in the traditional sense . . .

What would Lenin think of this alternate route to socialism? Why does anybody still care what Lenin would think?

You got anything interesting going on this weekend?

By this logic I'm a Marxist.

Marx - being a hater full of resentment - does well with sociology, because humans suck, so people who dislike humanity (like Macchiavelli and Hobbes) tend to do sociology better than hippies do.

Marx's problem is that he pretended, primarily, to be doing economic science. And this, he could not do. He couldn't manage so much as his own finances.

13 I always wonder what exactly is wrong with someone who thinks redistributionalist collectivism A. Would work, B. Is not a giant graft scheme, C. Is fair, D. wouldn't result in monstrous poverty, death, famine, etc.,

The idea that you can literally take the money and resources of one person, group, country, continent and redistribute it to another person, group, country, continent and thus make everyone "equal" shows an epic level of immaturity. I understand that those that push this scheme are actually stealing the money for themselves under the auspices of redistribution, but how stupid do you have to be to not see that? How are there not-elites who think that's a good? And do they only do it because they're A. Jealous, B.Lazy?

15 I think Marx did well in predicting a border-spanning upper class with no loyalty to the proletariats in their nations. We have this today in - er - San Francisco. He also predicted a proletarian reaction.

Marx did less well in predicting that the proles would find common cause across borders. The leaders of any "transnational proletariat" ends up hobnobbing with the transnational "Bourgeoisie", and seeking rents therefrom. Orwell illustrates this pretty well.

19 A friend of the family was a young girl living in Pusan under Japanese occupation. Her uncle was an electrical engineer and the war and following independence was very hard since they lost everything including the uncle. And the Korean war and rebuilding afterwards was worse for her family.

The thing that infuriates me today is that all the thought leaders are up in arms about the US kid who was pithed by the Norks, but couldn't be bothered by the entire population of North Korea who are treated worse, and have been living in a nation-wide prison labor camp for 50 years.

23 boulder terlit hobo, well said about Marx and some of his social analysis.

Not that it seemed brilliant or uniquely good, but solid. And I like your explanation that misanthropes (of the non-humanitarian variety) sometimes have easy insight into human behavior.

Just last week, I think, some commenter mentioned The 18th Brumaire of Louis Napoleon, one of Marx's essays (actually more journalism, of the real and heavy sort), of all things. I recall enjoying that one way back, when reading most of Marx's political and social analyses.

Contrasted with the dense nonsensical gobbledegook I heard at the Zhdanov Institute of Marxism-Leninism, at Leningrad State University, around the same time, Marx's stuff was actually well done and interesting.

I think in the end, the demise of western civilization will be traced to the ubiquitiousness of the TV, followed by electronics which just exasperated the initial problem.
People are miserably ill read, ill educated, ill trained to think. They imagine themselves "good" because they "care about people" or "care about the poor."
Well, if you "cared about people" you wouldn't vote for those who want to force the world into a redistributionist anti-colonialist collective where the only possible result within a generation would be famine, poverty, disease, war for resources, death and oppression.
You could take every dime from every American person, corporation, government then sink the continent into the earth then give it to the African continent and it would be in the pockets of a few thugs within a generation and they'd be right back where they started. No, worse off, because there would be no US to "help" them discover new drugs, clothe them, send food, design technology, know how to build roads.

Destroy the US and the world will sink into chaos making the post Pax Romana era look like dinner at Buckingham palace.

Lots of people have an erroneous belief that evolution means progress, which is reinforced by the famous graphic depicting the stages of the evolution of man from a chimpanzee-like creature to modern humans.

81 Moderns genetics research does tend to muddle as much as it resolves. Even relatively isolated populations as southeast Britain are in dispute from recent research. The English are either mostly Teutonic (angle/saxon/jute), mostly Britonic (Brito-celtic/Belgae), or muttic.

Hey, since my paternal ancestry is southeast British (Wolverhampton area), I've been reading up on this!

The research is doing well at pinpointing the ancient Celtic stock of the British Isles, to a mass invasion during the Bronze Age from the "bell beaker culture". This invasion nearly wiped out the farmers who were there beforehand. (Ancient European farmers were basically Sardinians.)

The research is not doing as well - yet - at finetuning a Celt from a Saxon. Since they are both Western Europeans speaking an Indo-European language, their genetics look very similar.

121 "Socialism is slavery. Communism is genocide. Leftism is treason to Liberty.
Posted by: Inspector Cussword

good summary. I at times call Communism "the mafia with a government kicker". The globalist thing is sorta where the Soviet infiltration has turned ... Clinton Crime Family was one of the biggest mafias, to join/coordinate with the other oligarch families, in dividing up the turf.

But mafias and kingdoms are effective, as long as they control their territory/properties well (and their property includes humans).

So our founders recognized the need for a government to defend from the invading hordes of those that claim ownership of their people (kings, popes, imams, cartel run states). So "Liberty" can never be quite "absolute" (except in anarchy perhaps, which would fail). The fight to limit centralized power (over some of our liberty) is always the battle.

Man is basically moral.
Groups tend toward immorality as force of the group defeats those not "organized".
So we are forced into "gangs" of one sort or another.

145 Too Good Not To Repost:

Just finished reading a collection of Poul Anderson sci-fi that ended on the short story called "Industrial Revolution."
https://www.amazon.com/Third-Golden-Science-Fiction-MEGAPACK-ebook/dp/B00KO6DL42

The premise? An entrepreneurial asteroid mining facility, funded with borrowed capital from a bank but turning a handsome profit and poised for growth, is visited by an earth warship commanded by officers who are members of the Social Justice Party -- no kidding, they're called the SJs -- who have won elections back on Earth on a platform of bitter "you didn't build that" socialism. The warship attempts to sabotage the facility and drive out its owners so it can be seized by the government. The CEO, an engineer, and his team outwit the warship's officers but the story is told in flashback as the first incident of a war between Earth and the productive asteroid mining colonies.

The story was first published in 1963.

I'm not sure I agree that man is basically moral. If that was true, then socialism and communism would work. Instead we get socialists and communists saying, "It will work *this time*, once we get the right people in charge."

Also the Founding Fathers sought to prevent concentration of power into too few hands, since they knew how that ended up.

In my first tour of duty in Germany in the late 70's I met a few as well. The old soldiers were great to chat with, the old ladies not so much. Bitter.
Second tour included deploying to Desert Storm. The old Wehrmacht soldiers started showing up at the gate into the base and would tell us how to protect the vehicles from the desert conditions. We finally invited them in to get some details. It was a great experience.

157 Grammie (still here?), here's another way of thinking about imperfection:

"Imperfection" simply measures the distance between desire or expectation, and what is actually there.

The space between "what is" and the "what should be" that imperfection describes is a subjective value judgement, not an objective measurement.

Strictly speaking, imperfections don't exist.

(I don't know, I find this clarifying...)

187 Somewhere along the line, the global elites must have decided that there can be no white-majority nations. It would be interesting to read the minutes of their meetings and see their reasoning.

I'm convinced that something of the sort is happening because all of the Western leaders seem to be on the same page. I don't think it's a coincidence and I don't think they're all stupid and can't envision the consequences of their actions.

The only explanation for the tidal wave of Third World immigration to the First World that makes sense to me, and it is loony as hell, is that the elites are planning to depopulate much of the Earth, and want to maintain as much genetic diversity as possible in the countries that will still have people when they are through. Remember, the more hardcore environmentalists say that the population should be reduced to no more than a billion people. That won't happen by itself. It will have to be a deliberate policy.

No one who knows anything about American cities would rate Houston as more culturally diverse than New York (all boroughs), LA, or Chicago. The surviving in-white diversity of Chicago alone exceeds the overall diversity of Houston.

212 Anybody know where Christopher Wray is in the nominating process? Does McConnell have him locked in the basement or is he in the Judicial Cmte., stuck in Ethics where?

I think it would be a good idea to shake up the Rosenstein/Mueller love affair by introducing a third party post haste. Wray worked as personal attorney for Christie so this should be interesting.

In 2003, Wray was nominated by President George W. Bush as assistant attorney
general in charge of the Department of Justice's criminal division. The
Senate unanimously confirmed him.

Acting Director McCabe was also being considered. The Dems and NBC like him very much. So I expect that Wray's path to confirmation will be torturous and may not happen until after the August luxury vacation month, if at all.

The local French (Quebeckers) and Germans didn't speak; when my mother's parents, one of each, married, they were mutually disowned for ten years.

It was a miracle! that Poles, Bulgarians, Baltics, Ukrainians, plus Lebanesers and Syrians (Eastern Rite) and yer Jews all "learned to get along" in these parts. And now allasudden they're just one tribe? Why, it's an insult to bigots.

Disagree too. I would change that statement to "Man is basically selfish." We operate first and foremost out of self interest and self preservation. Selflessness is a virtue and must be taught. It is a supernatural virtue I would say bc it operates against our own self interest.

230 @221 No, re-assigned. Fifty years ago there was still a significant Francophone population in the Nordeast. Kerouac's kinda-sorta Frenchiness was taught as a prime factor in his beatiness, because we French were like that.

As that population vanished, so did that "academic insight." The new racial realities have brought it all rushing back. To what end, we may wonder.

Antifas and Islamists don't think selflessness is a virtue. I think this has allowed things to degenerate to the point they have. Whether I'm right or whether I'm wrong
Whether I find a place in this world or never belong
I gotta be me, I've gotta be me
What else can I be but what I am
I want to live, not merely survive
And I won't give up this dream
Of life that keeps me alive
I gotta be me, I gotta be me
The dream that I see makes me what I am
That far away prize, a world of success
Is waiting for me if I heed the call
I won't settle down, won't settle for less
As long as there's a chance that I can have it all
I'll go it alone, that's how it must be
I can't be right for somebody else
If I'm not right for me
I gotta be free, I've gotta be free
Daring to try, to do it or die
I've gotta be me
I'll go it alone, that's how it must be

Watching LeMans, and they do a nice breakaway about 1968 and the US victory. Then they mention that Dan Gurney drove east, and won the Belgian GP, in his own car. All true, and it was great. And then they say that was the only Grand Prix victory by an American in an American car.

They do this all the time, just like the TV guys who begin Indianapolis history with the first year the 500 was televised. No, guys. "Formula One, Inc." of the post WWII era is not the whole history of Grand Prix racing.

Jimmy Murphy won the 1921 French Grand Prix. In a Duesenberg.

Hey, bluebell, I just submitted a recipe. the submission is slightly off though - since it's an appetizer and the recipe calls for 2-21/2 lbs. shrimp, I didn't fill in servings and so it automatically filled in 5 Morons. As an appetizer it can feed more than that. (Although I confess I made it for dinner occasionally and am entirely capable of scarfing down 2 lbs of shrimp over the course of an evening.)

309 @283 You're just being a smartass now. 1940 was the end of racing for a while, but Nuvolari beat the Germans at the course Hitler had built just to show off the Benz cars, and it was a glorious victory. Alfa F'n Romeo, baby.

There's a certain irony, or aluminy, to how good Fascists were at building "a certain type of automobile." And it was fun to watch them fight. Alfa had a top engineer, Wilfredo Ricart, and a pretty good team manager, Enzo Ferrari. They both had a quirk or two (Ricart wore thick crepe soles on his shoes, so his brain would not get joggled). He left first, and ended up at a Spanish (fascist) bus and truck maker, Pegaso, where in the 1950's he got the apprentices to build some very nice sports cars indeed. Ferrari left, and you know what came of that. Ettore Bugatti, in Alsace, was also not a democrat.

The post-WWII F1 regime was headed up by Britons of an unfortunate political background. We're just now getting to a remove where you can joke about it. Hard to imagine that in the 60's, early 70's, sports car racing had a hippie following. That's all over now.

343 64 years ago today, East Germany de facto ceased to exist as the people rose up all over the country and rioted. At first, the protests demanded a rescinding of new work norms demanding more work for less pay but quickly took a turn to demands for fully free elections. A group of youths even went to the top of the Brandenburg Gate, tore down the red flag there, yelling "We want freedom, we want bread, we will beat all Russians dead!" Enter the Soviet soldiers and tanks which were sent in to restore order. Most likely a few hundred East Germans were killed, and the country was restored to the East German government, which in the meantime was hiding out in Karlshorst while the Soviets did their bidding.

345 "Countries like Sweden and Great Britain are held up as examples of socialism "working" while Venezuela is ignored.
================================

It seems to matter not to Swedes that the government confiscates about 70 percent of their wealth. "Cradle to grave". That's what they want."

Ah, but it DOES matter to Swedes...it just manifests itself in different ways. For instance, it cannot be said enough the reason they are importing taxpayers is this: Swedes have stopped having kids. Children are expensive enough as it is, but more so when the government confiscates 70% of your income, and God help you if you do well for yourself: the government WILL kick your ass. The government there is fine with immigrant rapists: they consider being successful and personal achievement to be far greater crimes (millions of Americans are of the same mindset).

Also, I read in Maclean's some time ago that Sweden's education system has slipped in PISA rankings. There is thinking out there that the reason for this is the kids in school. They see up close and personal that if they attempt to do good in school and make something of themselves beyond that, the State WILL severely punish them and make examples of them. So, at a young age, even the kids are saying "why bother"?

The desire of some people for whatever reason to enforce mediocrity at the point of a police officer's gun has pernicious effects far beyond what people think at first glance.
