Also, dress pr0n. Each week, I pick out a few lovely, modest, conservative dresses for the 'ettes to admire and appraise. And, for those of you who aren't nerdly enough for chess, you can use this thread to talk about checkers, or other games, or politics, or whatever you wish, only please try to keep it civil. Nobody wants to get in the middle of a tomato fight on a Saturday afternoon. “Openings teach you openings. Endgames teach you chess.” “Gerzadowicz? Here is some traditional Norwegian attire: Finally, here is a screen grab from one of the pop-up ads that have been appearing in my browser ever since I started doing searches for dress pr0n: 6R1/p4p2/1p2q2p/8/6Pk/8/PP2r1PK/3Q4 w - - 0 1 5nk1/p2p2bp/1p1qp3/3N4/2P3QP/1P2B1P1/P7/5K2 w - - 0 1 3.Ne8+ White forks the queen and comes out a piece ahead. Fortunately, I can just use the mating threat to work his king down the board and mate him in the corner. 7...Ka4 8.Kc5 Ka3 9.Kc4 Ka2 10.Kc3 d2 11.Qb2# Now, back to the main line: 4.Kxc6 d2 5.Kb6 d1=Q 6.a7# Easy peasy. Hope to see you all next week! ___________ Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and past it into your chess app. ___________ So that about wraps it up for this week. Now I'm reading about Realist art in 19th Century Europe, which succeeded Romanticism. This is the movement that gave us such beautiful depictions of Everyman like Van Gogh's The Potato Eaters and Millet's The Gleaners (and Angelus, even popular immediately in its day).
Wagner's Die Maistersinger von Nuernburg incorporated a prophecy from the Middle Ages that "Evil deeds threaten us; once the German people and the German Empire fragment under false foreign domination." --Hmm, I think that prophecy has come to pass, for different reasons, both in 1945 and the past few years. . . . I think on the endgame I go Rc7.
If black trades rooks the pawns neatly box the king in the corner and he can't get a queen in time. If he abandons the file then white gets a back rank mate. If he harasses the king then white can quickly reduce it to one of those previous resolutions. If he tries to advance a pawn White can advance his pawns. ...d2 b7+ Ka7 Rc8 RxR bxR>Q d1>Q Qb7# Posted by: The Sarcastic Dead at June 17, 2017 06:48 PM (pvAk6) 104

Okay, counterattacking with 1. ... Rc6 doesn't work as it weakens his 8th rank too much while leaving the 7th rank unprotected as well. Black needs to focus on defense in this position. But on positional grounds, Ng5 blocks the g-file, which should weaken white's attacking position. White still has various deadly traps if black stumbles, but since black has well positioned pieces (except his bishop), I've tried various combinations and I think black can barely hold on by offering a queen exchange when possible, which would simplify the position by eliminating out the diagonal attacks. Black needs to watch out for white's possible knight and rook combinations, though, along with white's f-pawn. Thus black's best reply to 1. Ng5 looks to be 1. ... Qe7. And 2. ...Qg7 if white moves 2. Qh6 Posted by: civil truth at June 17, 2017 09:33 PM (t3LBb) 179
#4 - I looked at Ng5 as well. It's a strong move, but not as decisive as Nf8 as it blocks the doubled white rooks. Better to block the black rooks...
