Saturday Afternoon Chess/Open Thread (Featuring Dress Pr0n) 06-17-2017

The Chess Players
William Orpen, 1902

Good afternoon morons and moronettes, and welcome to the Saturday Afternoon Chess/Open Thread, the only AoSHQ thread with content specifically for all of us chess nerds who pay homage in the temple of Caïssa, goddess of the chessboard. Also, dress pr0n. Each week, I pick out a few lovely, modest, conservative dresses for the 'ettes to admire and appraise. And, for those of you who aren't nerdly enough for chess, you can use this thread to talk about checkers, or other games, or politics, or whatever you wish, only please try to keep it civil. Nobody wants to get in the middle of a tomato fight on a Saturday afternoon.

Solutions Update

Problem 1 - White To Play

20170617 - Problem 1.jpg
6R1/p4p2/1p2q2p/8/6Pk/8/PP2r1PK/3Q4 w - - 0 1

1.Qe1+ Rf2

If 1...Rxe1 then 2.g3#

2.Qxf2#

Problem 2 - White To Play

20170617 - Problem 2.jpg
5nk1/p2p2bp/1p1qp3/3N4/2P3QP/1P2B1P1/P7/5K2 w - - 0 1

White can win a piece:

1. Nf6+! Kf7

If 1...Kh8, then the moves are as in the main line.

2.Qxg7+ Kxg7
3.Ne8+

White forks the queen and comes out a piece ahead. Should be enough for a win.

Problem 3 - Black To Play

20170617 - Problem 3.jpg
3Q4/5p1k/5Pp1/pB5q/Pr6/6P1/6KP/3R4 b - - 0 1

1... Rb2+
2. Rd2

Not 2.Kf1 because of 2...Qf3+ 3.Ke1 Qf2#.

2...Qd1
3.Rxb2 Qxd8 and now the material is roughly equal.

Problem 4 - White To Play

20170617 - Problem 4.jpg
2r1r2k/1b5p/p2QNq2/3p1P2/3Pp3/8/6RP/6RK w - - 0 1

1. Nf8!

For Black's response, I counted 4 main possibilities:

#1
1...Qxd6
2.Rg8#

#2
1...Rxf8
2.Rg8+ Rxg8
3.Qxf6+ Rg7
4.Qxg7#

#3
1...Qxf8
2.Rg8+ Qxg8
3.Qf6+ Qg7
4.Qxg7#

#4
1...Qg7
2.Rxg7 Rxf8
3.Rg8+ Rxg8

Or 3.Rxh7+ Kxh7 4.Qg6+ Kh8 5.Qg7#

4.Qf6+ Rg7
5.Qxg7#

Endgame of the Week

20170617 - Endgame.jpg
k7/8/PP6/K7/4p3/2Rp4/2r5/8 w - - 0 1

1.Rc8+! Rxc8
2.b7+ Kb8
3.Kb6 Rc6+
4. Kxc6 d2

Instead of d2, my chess app played 4...Ka7. There followed:

5.Kc7 Kxa6
6.b8=Q Ka5
7.Kc6

Threatening Qb5#. I do not want to allow Black to get his pawns going. Fortunately, I can just use the mating threat to work his king down the board and mate him in the corner.

7...Ka4
8.Kc5 Ka3
9.Kc4 Ka2
10.Kc3 d2
11.Qb2#

Now, back to the main line:

4.Kxc6 d2
5.Kb6 d1=Q
6.a7#

Easy peasy.

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and past it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

27 Now I'm reading about Realist art in 19th Century Europe, which succeeded Romanticism. This is the movement that gave us such beautiful depictions of Everyman like Van Gogh's The Potato Eaters and Millet's The Gleaners (and Angelus, even popular immediately in its day).

Wagner's Die Maistersinger von Nuernburg incorporated a prophecy from the Middle Ages that "Evil deeds threaten us; once the German people and the German Empire fragment under false foreign domination."

170 I keep forgetting that I don't have ampersand privileges.

But I do have rum. (((rum))) It's not bourbon, but it will do.

171 I guess I'll have to stomp around on this old thread, all by my lonesome. I don't care. I'm shameless. Well, almost.

Someone was a poor loser today.

173 I'd share a scotch but I'm all out now

174 Have some of this rum, Skip! There's plenty.

175 I've got these hummingbirds less than three feet from me, but I can't get the little bastards to show me their ruby throats. Wrong angle.

176 If they're not males, their throats will be gray...

177 Yeah, it's easy to see the males, but their throats are black from the side.

Okay, counterattacking with 1. ... Rc6 doesn't work as it weakens his 8th rank too much while leaving the 7th rank unprotected as well. Black needs to focus on defense in this position.

But on positional grounds, Ng5 blocks the g-file, which should weaken white's attacking position. White still has various deadly traps if black stumbles, but since black has well positioned pieces (except his bishop), I've tried various combinations and I think black can barely hold on by offering a queen exchange when possible, which would simplify the position by eliminating out the diagonal attacks. Black needs to watch out for white's possible knight and rook combinations, though, along with white's f-pawn.

Thus black's best reply to 1. Ng5 looks to be 1. ... Qe7. And 2. ...Qg7 if white moves 2. Qh6

179 #4 - I looked at Ng5 as well. It's a strong move, but not as decisive as Nf8 as it blocks the doubled white rooks. Better to block the black rooks...

180 So that's why there are $99 flights from Stewart International to Bergen!

On problem #3, I think there's a simpler approach: 1...Rxb5 2.axb5 Qe2+ is a perpetual, no?
