126 Superb art.

I don't understand the title on the top one. Spruce trees are known for their pacifistic tendencies, forming highly communal societies. They don't really have warriors, and anyway are monecious. Here you can see them communicating, almost conspiratorially, planning to populate the clearing in the foreground.

The bottom one is nice though. The rosy tones of the ? rock in the middle highlight the iris. Could use a cabin, though. Cabins are always nice.

Not sure what that third drawing is. An incomplete drawing of an ash? Difficult to be sure. Anyway. Thanks for the art!

196 OK I've already heard the sweet-leftist take on "Help Wanted." BIL and SIL say you can't get a contractor for anything now, because all the Mexicans have been scared away by Trumpism.

They're real snobs. Only Mexican they've ever hired is retired from the GM engine plant next town over, and his family's been here longer than theirs.
Also, he's a skilled mason, not a tomato picker.
And yet they paid him to till the garden they told me they weren't putting in this year, while my tiller sat right there in their garage hog-barn.
I said, "It's because I'm part French, isn't it." And they didn't say non.

Racistes.

The Exploding Mohamed is looking like a problem for which the Cloud People have no way to ignore, but they are working hard to find a way to turn this problem into a weapon against the Dirt People. ...

The most obvious solution to the exploding and stabbing Mohameds is to stop importing Mohameds. If BMW’s exploded at this rate, Britain would ban the importation of BMW’s and demand the manufacturer recall those in the country. Volkswagen is facing billions in fines for violating trivial emissions regulations. Yet, no one dares say, “there’s a problem with these Mohameds. Let’s put the brakes on importing more of them until will can figure out what’s going on with them.” Nope. It is a mad dash to import more of them.

305 269 I was a Creative Writing/Literature major in college. I found there were two kinds of creative writers:
(a) The kind (like me) that views it as a job and sits down for a set number of hours per day and does the job; and

(b) The kind that likes the idea of being a writer or a poet because of the cool
cachet associated with creative endeavor and talks a lot about inspiration and
The Muse. They also talk a lot about agents and movie rights and won't talk about what they're working on because they're deathly afraid someone jealous of their genius might steal their ideas.

There was so much I disliked in the second John Wick I don't know where to start. It went from a semi-realistic world in the first to some type of steam punk unrealistic world in the second. It abandoned the story structure of the first that made you root for Wick even though he was a bad guy. And if your character is supposed to be the ultimate boogeyman with no equals, then don't put in another character that's basically his equal.

Someone somewhere made the observation, the cell phone has ruined essentially every trick in "romantic" movies, where the boy meets the girl, they have some sort of conflict that separates them, and... what. Nowadays, he can text her or call her or hit her up on social media or whatever, man.

So the only plot device they have is to break the damn phone, or have her in Siberia or somewhere else with no cell service or wifi.

I happen to think I'm a brilliant writer (not without some cause for thinking so), but the writing I do professionally is not for public consumption. It has a purpose, and if I'm doing it right (which I believe I am), it can have important consequences.

So.. when I come here, I get to let words flow. I sometimes think if I could gather everything I ever said here, and could spend about 10 years sorting it, I could assemble the "Meaning of Life."

414 "Ace in The Hole" is (loosely) based on the true story of cave explorer Floyd Collins. Quite a story about popular culture (live radio coverage in 1925, nationwide prayer meetings, and so on) and a real ironic tragedy, too -- guy was good enough that he got a steady job exploring a cave system, so bought a pair of good lace-up boots, and it was the boots that got him stuck, and he wouldn't let them saw his leg off to save his life.

One of my dad's earliest memories, hearing the reports on the new radio.
