Powerline: Jim Comey Was "Untruthful" When He Claimed In His Testimony He Took No Notes on George W. Bush

He said he hadn't taken notes about meetings with Obama or W -- just Trump.

However, Powerline's John Hindraker has found "proof" of extensive note-taking by Comey on a meeting with W.

Comey brought this episode up last week in order to paint himself, not as a sneak who dictated a memo to cover himself every time he had a conversation with a president, but rather as an honest man who was uniquely concerned about Donald Trump's trustworthiness.

...

A sharp-eyed reader pointed out that, as it happens, Comey has left behind an account of that meeting with President Bush. It is recounted in Angler, a book-length attack on Dick Cheney by Barton Gellman. Comey was one of Gellman's chief sources.

Angler includes a description of Comey’s meeting with Bush that obviously came from Comey. It is strikingly similar to Comey’s description of his critical meeting with Donald Trump in his written Intelligence Committee testimony....

In Comey's account, as transmitted by Gellman, he was a hero, telling the president something that other aides had kept from him: that the Department of Justice was in revolt over the surveillance program, and mass resignations, including his, were imminent. Comey claims to have quoted Martin Luther before the Diet of Worms, as he explained that as a man of principle he would have no choice but to resign rather than execute an order he believed to be illegal. One of Comey's colleagues, who also was about to resign, was Comey's good friend Bob Mueller, who waited for Comey downstairs at the White House while Comey had his dramatic conversation with President Bush....

But Comey’s Senate testimony was untruthful....

Comey's assertion that this "quick email" just told his staff "there was something going on" was false. The email was substantive: it documented Comey’s account of the conversation he had with the president. Comey didn’t wait five minutes to create a record of what he said to the president, and what the president said to him.

More important, he also made an extensive report on the conversation. Gellman's book is footnoted. This is where Gellman says he got his account of Comey's meeting with Bush:

317 "You don’t look well": Quotations from the Bush-Comey conversation are taken verbatim from unclassified notes describing Comey's report of the meeting shortly afterward.

Gellman's account of the conversation is two pages long and includes the following quotes attributed to Comey or Bush...

Hit the link to see how detailed these two pages are, filled with quotes, all apparently from Comey's "unclassified notes" typed up very shortly after the meeting.

When Hindraker first wrote this post, he couldn't say whose notes these were-- possibly, I guess, they were from Bush. Seems unlikely as hell -- this was an attack book about Cheney -- but it was possible.

But an update to the post includes this tweet from the book's author:

UPDATE: The same eagle-eyed reader found this tweet by Barton Gellman that nails it down:

In 2004, Comey left a 1-on-1 with Bush and sent time-stamped notes from the hallway outside the Sit Room. There will be more. From 'Angler': pic.twitter.com/y76CctRsIZ
-- Barton Gellman (@bartongellman) May 17, 2017

That was from the author of the book, tweeting before his source decided to claim he never took notes on any other president.

Bring him back under oath.

Once again taking detailed notes and sending them to friendly reporters who would paint him as a hero -- and once again making sure the notes weren't classified, so they could be leaked without legal consequence.

22 As was pointed out in a prior thread: Comey's attitude completely upends the fundamental principle of a representative democracy.

59 http://nypost.com/2017/06/10/comeys-truth-crusade-is-really-an-anti-trump-one/

Comey was leaking to the same NYT reporter at least as early as March 5.

"On March 5, one day after Trump accused President Barack Obama of wiretapping him at Trump Tower, the Times reported that Comey was furious at the charge. Its unnamed sources were "senior American officials.""

Recall that Trump put wiretapping in quotes, and has since been vindicated.

From this I infer that Comey has been in league with Deep Staters, and that they're all concerned with exposure of their surveillance of Americans at the behest of the Obamans and for their own shits and giggles.

I'd also take the bet that Comey's not having the FBI pursue leakers was a topic at some of his meetings with Trump. How can it not have been?

As much as I would love to nail Comey against a wall and expose him, where exactly are we on tax reform?

If you wanted to distract an Administration from actually implementing policy, this seems to be working pretty nicely.

Suddenly, after Omar Mateen terror attack in San Bernardino, Schmidt has a very high source in the FBI who knows Comeys thinking

171 If you put on a tinfoil hat, Comey's career rise (and cash in while in the private sector) intersects with the Clintons at several points.

And I know he at least purposefully looked away while Lynch fixed the Hillary e-mail investigation -- the key points of which was to let the spoliation of 33,000 incriminating e-mails and giving immunity to Hillary's minions.

But Comey is a sanctimonious fuck who can't keep his mouth shit. His big press conference and his recent testimony is his way of insisting that he's above the hypocrisy, when he's the biggest rat weasel of all.

204 As I've said since the first WA district "ruling", this is utterly lawless malfeasance by the judiciary (travel EO). Obviously. But a logical continuation of the constitutional collapse going on for years now.

But the lazy, irresponsible, easy path of the judicial/legal "community" has been to defer to the usurpations, hoping it will just stop, or that the people in responsible positions will be out of office before something really disastrous unfolds.

As said in the thread below, I sort of hope SCOTUS actually upholds this brazen lawlessness - just to see if there is *any* life left in the constitutional system. But they won't. Too brazen.

Then again, one looks at the comically unserious, indefensible, consequential mischief in Hamdan v. Bush, and Roberts' two thigh-slappers on O-care, and there remains some hope. And oh the dark comedy of the mindless "judicial supremacy" drones who would then have to explain how even operational executive decisions on national security matters, explicitly vested in the presidency and in this case specifically delegated by Congress, are ALSO really the purview of the courts.

There is no doubt this was (a) work product that was (b) leaked (c) without clearance. Unless more dirt turns up on Comey, which isn't unlikely, he'll still skate.

Which brings us to the bazillion dollar question: of all the D.C. grandees Rothestein could have chosen, why Mueller with all his conflicts of interest? Again, before we became the Neo-USSR, someone like Mueller would have declined and cited those conflicts. But why did Rosenstein select Mueller, for God's sake? Was he on the Rolodex or stored in the cell? This hasn't sat well since it was announced.

If D.C. wants to do this thing, it should just use back channels to the JCOS and have tanks rumbling through the streets of Dallas and Jacksonville already. Drop the pretense and all that.

247 >>They aren't doing what they promised. That's the entire point. They spent YEARS promising repeal, and punted when the time came.

No, sorry. The vast majority, including Trump, promised repeal and replace. Just because a handful of pols claimed they were going to deliver a full repeal with no replacement it doesn't mean all or even a majority did. Straight repeal was never going to happen. Obamacare was too expansive and touched far too many people to just flat out repeal it. It took years for it to be rolled out and changed way too many things like the entire insurance industry and Medicaid just to do a straight repeal. It would have caused even greater chaos in the insurance industry and quite possibly in the economy at large.

And that would have been an electoral disaster. And yea, winning elections matters. Republican may not be great but if Hillary had won with a Dem Congress we would now be talking about single payer instead of what mostly free market approach is going to replace Obamacare and if they bork this repeal and replace we may still be looking at a single payer down the road.

Politicians speak in simplistic terms during elections. That hasn't changed in the history of politics and elections. The fact that it takes a lot of hard work and negotiation to actually get massive legislation enacted should be a surprise to anyone.

Which it has now been learned in retrospect was at the behest of foreign coal interests who wanted the competing coal under that land locked away from the export market, and who paid off Clinton handsomely to do it for them.

Mind you, I don't know if this makes economic sense, and don't know if it's worth expending political capital over, but it does give a chance to shine a bright light under some wet rocks that the Democratic Party still will not want to be having turned over.

And I see the problem - a refusal to question assumptions. To question "the system." To push back on the narrative.

For instance, there will be no "mostly free market" approach. If that were on the table, it would have been brought up much earlier. But it wasn't.

Thing is, all these byzantine rules and things are there simply to make We The People powerless and entrench the bureaucracy. It provides an excuse for an ostensibly-elected body to claim powerlessness when in fact the power is there.

Anyone can cry that "nothing can be done." That doesn't impress me. Anyone can say "well, it could be worse." Ditto.

What CAN be done is what the GOPe has been using as a fundraising tool for years now. What they ARE doing is coming up with excuses not to do it but still magically remaining in power.

And that doesn't impress me much either.

297 JackStraw the last Congress (comical backtrack on approps to influence Obama's lawless immigration polices, yet another CR, zero fights using Congress' main weapon, $$$$) sort of kind of spectacularly hints that, in fact, the GOP can deliver bupkis and STILL win. Very doubtful more than a handful of House members in the few remaining competitive districts have the slightest concern about a "bloodbath" in '18, regardless of their behavior.

We didn't get where we are by having a GOP acting in response to its voters' main concerns using Congress' normal powers. Quite the opposite.

So why the GOP House/Senate? Consider the alternative. A two-party system is a trap when neither side is sane/responsive. The inertia of incumbency (difficulty of primarying incumbents), plus national gerrymandering of the House = what we have now. A GOP that can run on a simple O-care repeal platform for 6 years, then suddenly, when in power, morph into an O-care-lite brigade.

Not to worry. The millions who suffer under a $10-15K annual surtax in the individual insurance "market" will see no relief, but the majority, who whine about comparatively small price increases, may see prices stabilize a tiny bit. And "tax cuts" will muddy the waters, while leaving the growth-killing tax represented by all this health insurance nonsense fundamentally unchanged. Though administrative actions, and a true "Phase II" to O-care repeal, could still deliver.

I've been asking this even before Mueller got picked. The Trumpsters made Rosenstein the DOJ #2, and had to know that there was a good chance Sessions would be recused. There was actually a risk that interim AG Sally Yates would pick a Special Counsel.

Rosenstein played ball on the Comey firing.

I get that Mueller may be in cahoots with Comey. There's an alternative theory that he's not.

333 >>JackStraw the last Congress (comical backtrack on approps to influence Obama's lawless immigration polices, yet another CR, zero fights using Congress' main weapon, $$$$) sort of kind of spectacularly hints that, in fact, the GOP can deliver bupkis and STILL win.

Au contraire. The last Congress actually did a good job of running interference against Obama. Do you not remember his Pen and Phone whine? They were rewarded for not doing Obama's bidding. They even forced Reid to change the rules in the Senate which obviously came back to bite them in the ass bigly. And we have a conservative on the Supreme Court and not a liberal because McConnell held the line. That's kind of a big deal.

The idea that a Republican Congress was going to somehow get Obama to do what they want is laughable. You noticed Schumer and Pelosi chalking up a lot of wins lately? They are trying the same obstruction game plan that the Republicans played under Obama and they are being about as successful as the Republican were when they were in the minority. They can gum up the works and slow some stuff down but in the end they really don't have much power to do squat.

Though administrative actions, and a true "Phase II" to O-care repeal, could still deliver

Everyone knows the pain we are all feeling thanks to Obamacare. It's not exactly a mystery. But if you have read the House plan you will also notice that the vast majority of those taxes are repealed as is the funding for PP among many other things such as no mandate and special risk pools for those with pre-existing conditions.

If they don't deliver real reform and fix some of these problems they will pay a price. Not all of them obviously but enough to make a serious problem. I prefer to wait and see what they actually produce rather than insisting nothing will happen except more bad before the Senate even delivers a bill let alone a conference committee bill.

342 Not gonna beat this horse any longer, JackStraw, but just noticed you repeated one of your familiar lines about O-care "being the insurance industry" or some such, too difficult to repeal.

Nonsense, of course.

How was the industry run up until Jan. 1, 2014? Oh, that's right, under a horrible mish-mash of state and fed distortions built on top of a real-world, actuarial basis. O-care just added another, huge, disastrous layer of distortions.

Those can be removed as easily as they were implemented (much easier, of course, actually). You can't possibly mean to be claiming that the industry can't easily return to pre-O-care practices, as that is obviously silly.

Yes, O-care "touched" millions - almost exclusively for the worse. The "beneficiaries" are outnumbered 3/5 to 1 (individual market) to gawd-knows, much higher ratios when the group market is considered.

And lumping in Medicaid completely distorts the picture. Entirely separate question, about expanding a 50-yr old federal program. Medicaid expansion was NOT the political juice of any election since 2008, obviously.

Things are a lot simpler and easier than many seem to want everyone to believe. But those who were alive and in the market prior to Jan. 2014 know that the "old" system was perfectly workable, it just had unsustainable inflation.

>>Those can be removed as easily as they were implemented (much easier, of course, actually). You can't possibly mean to be claiming that the industry can't easily return to pre-O-care practices, as that is obviously silly

It was done over a period of years not all at once, or didn't you notice? And no, they can't be removed as easily as they were implemented. Again, the entire fucking point of Obamacare.

What exactly do you think is one of the overriding issues they have been negotiating? If you don't know, it's timing.

The insurance industry, yes I did notice how it works before 2014, works on annualized periods. It does not turn on a dime and it does not handle radical change all that well. Or haven't you noticed how insurance companies are now fleeing market after market because they find losing hundreds of millions of dollars per year a difficult business model to sustain.

I'd prefer not to further damage the insurance industry and drive them completely out of the health care market because the alternative is exactly what the left wants, single payer Medicare for all. The insurance industry may suck, the alternative which is the government sucks a whole lot more.

Of course lumping Medicaid expansion completely distorts the picture. That was the entire point. 32 states, which is a majority since we don't actually have 57 states and PR is not going to be our 51st, have added Medicaid expansion under Obamacare and many of those stares are run by Republicans and some are swing states like Ohio. If you don't think there is some serious infighting going on over that shit as part of any repeal and replace then you are not paying attention.

You can stop whining about how great the old model was. It wasn't great. It just sucked less than what we have now. And we aren't going back to that. That ship has sailed. What they are trying to do with the multiple phases, just as Obamacare had multiple phases, is implement things like sale of insurance across state lines and other free market things that will actually bring down the cost of insurance. You know, reform.

Stop pretending this is some easy thing that you just wave a magic wand and get exactly what you want with zero blowback. They not only need to come up with a replacement but they need to come up with a replacement that A) works which Obamacare most definitely does not and B) helps them hold their seats because this is politics and every single thing that politicians do is done with politics in mind.
