A stupid little pothole with a sharp, pointed edge did that.
They told me I ought to see what potholes can do to some of those fancy tires I see now. Very low profile, large diameter rims. It looks like the sidewall is no more than 1" high.
And those rims have been bent badly by the potholes as well. Very expensive, they say.

I took a walk to calm down, returned to my desk and sent the asshole an icy e-mail. I told him that euthanizing a dog was about $80, a figure I paid all too many times over the years and that I always sat with them as they drew their last breath because it was the respect they deserved, that in their final moments they should feel gentle words and a soft touch from one who loved them.

Same. For all my parents' faults and foibles, they got this one right. My earliest memories consist, in part, of my parents AND sisters encouraging me to read. They also consist of a teacher screaming at me for holding my pencil wrong because I had the temerity to figure out the writing thing long before teachers decided I needed to be taught to skill.
And people wonder why I don't think teachers are as indispensable to civilization as teachers do.

Anyway. Today I had *my* usual 6-month exam, and my doctor did *not* ask me that question, nor was it in any of the questionnaires I received. I'm in California too, btw.

Keith Moon moved in beside Steve McQueen in Malibu CA. It started off OK but by the time Moon left there was an extreme amount of animosity towards him, mostly due to Moon attempting to see McQueen's wife nude, but other things as well. So anyway, one time Idi Amin and I were at NDGT Cosmos & Kegel Camp - Idi was getting an award for being SETI Receptive - when some funny shenanigans started up.
Apparently we were under observation by aliens!

That apparently was the last straw. They challenged us to a sword fight, the earth and humanity's existence in the balance.
Well I run a mean 9 and figured it was up to me but Idi steps up and presents and dude - he's packing a riding crop!
The size of a sharpie around but knee-length! And ready to cut diamonds.
The alien leader - it said it's name was 'Wesley' or some such drops loincloth and... ouch. I mean, damn. Vienna Sausage time. Every guy in the place flinched.
Well, it was all over in seconds. Wesley had been penetrated in all 37 of it's orifices with the aliens fleeing, and Idi peeling NDGT out of that lacy thing for round two.
Idi still gets fathers day cards from Wesley... apparently something got fertilized in there.

Depends on the job but 'usually' contractors ROE is very strictly defensive under fire or imminent hazard only. There is no lighting up a dude placing an IED in the road for future use for example.

Mr. Buchanan, is antisemitic, IMHO, and is a dumbass. In his book "Churchill, Hitler, and the Unnecessary War", he calls Stalin a "political genius". Yeah, it's EASY to be a "political genius" when your method of persuasion is killing millions of people at a time. I see Mr. Buchanan going to Stalinist show trials for the entertainment value (if he could) the way Joseph Davies, ambassador to the USSR in the late 1930s, did.

Yeah that means jack. I was in the ER for 12 hours because they couldn't believe my heart was running less than 20% of normal because I could sit up and talk. Then they did an echo and they broke the sound barrier putting me in the ICU.
BTW the feet don't always swell either. The big thing is breathing while lying down or leaning back - but it depends on how bad your heart is (if it is, I ain't sayin' that's your problem).
Echos aren't that expensive.
P.S. I recovered to the point where I was walking on hills 40-70+ minutes most days, went back to work, 6 months, BOOM, failed again.

How? Why? If there is life out there and assuming that they have reached out technology level or are even above it, how would they know we're here? If they are 500 light years away there would be no external indication of life here, maybe they know there's a planet in the goldilocks zone but that assumes a lot right there. And even our external indication of radio wave transmissions really don't extend much past our solar system in a way that would be detectable.
And then for visiting? Well there's no real evidence of FTL being actually feasible. So maybe they can reach near lightspeed, that's still a long time and distance to travel all to maybe arrive on a planet you hope can support you to meet a group you know nothing about and might kill you just by a sneeze or you them.
If life has or does exist elsewhere in the galaxy they most certainly would not have visited us.

Wow. My only story of that sort is: I was eating at a restaurant in New Orleans, and the people at the next table gave me...my first taste of Jagermeister. Yeah. It was like Dr Pepper syrup, but with more sugar and alcohol.
I agree about rye. It's both, but there are sipping ryes that are mind-blowing. I was gifted one recently, and I can hardly believe how good it is: Whistlepig Old World Cask Finish. When it's gone, it's gone. But the memory will remain.

The Us, frankly, didn't do much to stop the Holocaust (it just ended up being stopped as an ancillary occurrence) and was not very welcoming to Jewish refugees from the Holocaust (to put it mildly). And the US had no obligation to be, anyway. So ... I don't see how talking about whether the US should have gone into WWII has anything to do with Jews, since consideration of Jews never factored into the decision to enter WWII, to start with.
But the US certainly benefited greatly from the exodus of Jews from Europe before and during the war. That was what made the US the sole nuclear power and insured total US hegemony immediately following the war. Had the Jewish physicists gone elsewhere it would be a very, very different world today.

They got their title last year anyways. But yeah that has essentially been the knock on him in Cleveland for a long time. The owner bent to his demands and then he ran off to Miami, and now that he's back and gotten them a championship already I imagine that coddling of him is even more extreme.

LONG STORY SHORT: I was told by everyone to go to an orthopedist, who I knew was going to recommend me for surgery of something or other, maybe even a knee replacement. Instead, I went to a very highly regarded and very physical chiropractor, who told me my real problem was with my hips, which had been knocked out by the quad problems, and it was shifting all the stress to my knee.
I was skeptical but desperate, and started to see him 3 times a week for him to adjust and move my bones (it was kind of impressive feeling him pop my hip back into its socket - didn't hurt, but I could feel it) I started to feel better quickly, and now a year later, I am almost completely back to normal. The old pain started to come back after a 5 mile hike along a rocky creekbank recently, but some more exercises later got rid of it.
And this with NO surgery. I'm a convinced believer - but you have to find someone who REALLY knows what they're doing.

If you need an expensive scan, talk to the manager of the radiology place and negotiate a large discount for cash. Tell them you will take a cancellation or schedule the scan during a slow time so they save money on you.
You can base your offer on the insurance company negotiated price, which is usually less than half the retail price for a scan.
Around here the negotiated price is about 45% of the list price. And for cash, and an accommodating patient? I'll bet it would be much less.

Jim, you are hitting about 5 on the 7 red flags list for 'back' issues - you need to be seen by back doc, Ortho or similar. ASAP. Make sure they know you are 100% cash paying - there are 'ideal' imaging packages but sometimes a $300 plain CT will tell you what is needed initially. Make sure the image center or hospital knows you are cash pay and get a hard price up front. Shop around.
The longer you wait the worse it gets and the harder the recovery. GO.

I had immobilizing sciatica as well and left a comment about my treatment for you the other day. But I have insurance.
There are "scan or imaging" deals/packages out there. I was at a clinic for therapy the other day and at the elevator there was a sandwich board list of all services for uninsured. And there were good prices on the imaging as well as a host of other things. This clinic is part of the hospital where I have been treated.
FYI My doc recommended MRI for my sciatica.
Good luck. There is affordable help out there. Thoughts and prayers.

Get an MRI and have them look at tendons...
Some tendons do not heal on their own, because they need blood flow to get to the deep part that needs healing...
Had that problem with an elbow... Doctors kept telling me tendonitis.... was in pain for 1.5 years until I insisted on the MRI...
Outpatient surgery fixed it, and was fine within 3 weeks of the surgery (they literally cut a V in the tendon, so it would heal all the way down, not just on the surface...).

Getting out of bed was terrible. Force myself vertical. Set on the edge of the bed for five minutes waiting for the spasms to stop. Stand up, wait for the spasm to stop. Look for pants, wait for spasm to stop and so on and so on.

Yep. I am a herpes magnet.
I had chickenpox twice, I get cold sores from the sun, (and stress and fevers!) I've had Bell's palsy and that vestibular neuritis, both of which they think is a strain of herpes on various nerves in the head. All in late June/early July, which I find hard to believe is coincidental.
Thankfully I don't have the socially awkward type!

Jim mine was totally debilitating and a hair short of immobilizing. Before all the fancy dancy MRI I told you about...my first attack was during Christmas week around 4 pm in a store in a town an hour from my house.
I called one of those emergency clinics closer to home and made it up there barely. For pain this is what they gave me --
A cortisone shot (goes into muscle not a joint so not as lasting, but helpful). A 5 day deescalating dosage of prednisone. And a script for a muscle relaxant called Baclofen which knocked me on my ass. 3xday. I took 1/2at night.
After 3 days or so I could move. But not too much and not without pain. Eventually eased up.
Got it a second time a month later. On my other side . That's when we did MRI and longer term treatment. Hope this helps in your decision making.
Clinics and meds can be affordable. Once you get mobile you can go further. Not medical advice, just my experience.

I still wake-up stilted and with two numb fingers on my left hand.

Back in college, I fell down a flight of stairs. I wasn't even drunk at the time. It was in a movie theater, and when the movie started I decided to go from the balcony down to the main floor. There were no lights in the stairwell, and I stepped into the abyss and went head over heels.
I was shaken up but seemed to be uninjured at the time, but soon had persistent lower back pain. I saw a chiropractor for 2-3 years, and eventually stopped going because I didn't have any more pain. I don't know the exact nature of my injury or what he did to correct it, but it apparently worked.

Jim., I'm sorry to hear you are dealing w/ this. I read a lot after I went to bed last night. You got some good advice.
One thing that wasn't mentioned is laying on the floor on your stomach for 10-20 minutes, It can help get things aligned.
You really do need anti-inflammatories from a doc. I've been thru this for yrs. Email me and we can talk, link is in my nic, I think I could give you some help from my experience. Be well.

Ok fine...but there are a lot of stars and it would take time to explore each one at a time. That is true, but that would be a frankly dumb way to do it.
Instead you build Von Neumann probes. You fire them at the nearest star system with instructions to build more probes, and send them on to the next few systems and so on.
And within 100M years, at most, you have explored the galaxy with your probes and can follow up with your traders, death fleets, or Raëlian cosmic bang buses depending on the nature of your civilization.

One final thing if you are around. Undoubtedly you have lots of inflammation. Work on that -- maybe with aspirin or some other OTC anti inflammatory you can tolerate. Won't help with pain but will ease up the inflammation which will help you heal.

I understand what you mean, I really do, but he is like those people who are obsessed with Bilderbergers, or whatever the hell it is, which, by the way, I thought was some kind of joke or meme, but they really exist.
He just seems to look at Jews like some kind of all powerful boogie men, pulling the strings behind the scenes.
Aside from being weird, it's the kind of thing that makes people nervous, because that is where shit usually starts when people start in with pogroms and other horrible things.
They don't start off with the yellow stars and concentration camps, it's whispers of "Damn Jews are everywhere, too many of them, they own too much, they're too influential" and it's all down hill from there.

Ok fine...but there are a lot of stars and it would take time to explore each one at a time. That is true, but that would be a frankly dumb way to do it.
Instead you build Von Neumann probes. You fire them at the nearest star system with instructions to build more probes, and send them on to the next few systems and so on.
And within 100M years, at most, you have explored the galaxy with your probes and can follow up with your traders, death fleets, or Raelian cosmic bang buses depending on the nature of your civilization.

Assuming the time the probe hits the system there is worthwhile life there. What if the probe came through 100,000 years ago? Nothing here worthwhile. Life? They have life already where they are. Even now, the Solar System could be teeming with such probes, and we wouldn't know it. Figure something about 10 m in diameter. It would have to be withing 0.1 AU (IIRC) to be detectable with our current "eyes", unless it was transmitting, and transmitting something we could detect.
Oh, and on a time scale we could detect. We humans exist on a certain time scale. 0.1 seconds is about the lower resolution of consciousness.
Imagine some intelligence that exists much slower. Or faster.
On of their equivalent seconds is about 100 years to us. Or 1000 years. Or a microsecond.
Either one of those would totally escape us. And we couldn't communicate as we think of it now. Imagine it would take a 1000 years just to introduce themselves.
And say they comminicate with neutrinos instead of RF. Or dark matter based tech, which when we discover it, we'll soon learn is the ideal thing for communicating over light year spans. The idea of using EM for that would seem like using smoke signals.

As I have said before, cats are extremely sophisticated and successful parasites. Think about it.
Traditional parasites, like intestinal worms, live off their human hosts but nobody likes them. We try to get rid of them whenever we can.
But cats have us catering to their every whim, and even paying big bucks for expert medical care. All they have to do in return is be adorable. Pretty sweet gig, if you ask me.

I've been silently in despair for months, knowing that my Father's downfall was inevitable.
My Mother has been dealing with it, (poorly), for about a year, now. She exaggerates.
When I went to see him over the past week, it is no exaggeration about his mental capacity. He's doing poorly.
His physical well-being is above the doctors' expectations because of the diet my Mother and I laid out for him.
She chides him on "snacking", but that's not only Who He Is, but his physical health is superb.
I told her to "lay-off" because she is just too worried, and I cannot blame her. I Love them both and I rarely let tears fall from my eyes, as they should remain in a Man's head. Where they belong.
My Father is no longer "My Father" that I grew-up with. I'm losing him slowly and my Mother drives me nuts.
I'll ask you all to pray for me in this instance because I'm not of a Sound Mind.
I'm not alone in this, I know. Most of you have already lost at least one of your Parents, if not both.
I'm sorry to ask for this, but I'm just not "all there".
I'll ask God for guidance tomorrow.

possibly "swimmer's ear" post shower or being immersed in water...
simple preventative treatment: several drops of rubbing alcohol instilled in each ear, with head tilted, after shower and/or immersion. you can pour a skosh in the cap, and use that to instill, instead of a dropper.
the IOTH breaks the surface tension of the water in the canal, and thus displaces it. tilt your head back the other way, and it all drains out. then clean the canal with a Q-tip (and not one of those cheap generic things either)
likely won't help with an infection, but it's a good way to help prevent them going forward.

Every year four urban school districts sue in State Court to get more money. The Supreme Court rules for schools. They then tell legislators to cough up the money. But not how much. But more than 50% of the budget for sure.
The budget has to be settled by 30 June to have schools open on time. The legislators caved.
This is all without the slightest evidence that it raises educational outcomes. I fact, I postulate that the other 50% of the state budget could go to schools without materially bettering educational outcome.
Last election only 35% voted to not retain the judges, so the people failed to protect themselves. The legislators will not impeach those same judges like OK threatened. They can't even say "Swim in your own lane", the all-purpose Washington DC admonition.
I have to pay for it.

Yes, Things are looking up.
I had DeplorableJewells45 make me a bespoke necklace for an upcoming anniversary. It looks great, and it's packed with allegorical goodness.
It's all about spousal maintenance.
I'm up a tad early because of the tick bite reactions and chiggers. We have a lot of ticks this year, and even more chiggers. Even with multiple layers of protection they get to me.
I supported my up the hill neighbor with mowing, which is where they come from.
She has a beautiful extended garden, and it takes 6 hours of turning my riding mower to cut all the intervening grass. Her kids, grandkids and two great-grandkids are visiting this weekend. I want her place to look cared for, and now it does. She is a bit frail at 90 years old to mow, but she tends her gardens for hours daily.

Road construction contracting in this state is ridiculous.
Simply building a new entrance at the hospital where I live, a thing that should take no more than a week, has been going on for the past 6 months.
Somebody's got to be making out like a bandit on this. We really need to tighten the timelines on these contracts, and increase penalties for time overruns.
