25-Year-Old Contractor with Top Secret Clearance Charged With Deliberately Leaking Classified National Security Information to Media

A criminal complaint was filed in the Southern District of Georgia today charging Reality Leigh Winner, 25, a federal contractor from Augusta, Georgia, with removing classified material from a government facility and mailing it to a news outlet, in violation of 18 U.S.C. Section 793(e).
Winner was arrested by the FBI at her home on Saturday, June 3, and appeared in federal court in Augusta this afternoon.
"Exceptional law enforcement efforts allowed us quickly to identify and arrest the defendant," said Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein....

The "exceptional law enforcement" consisted mainly of noticing that someone with Top Secret clearance was named "Reality Winner."

Yeah.

According to the allegations contained in the criminal complaint:
Winner is a contractor with Pluribus International Corporation assigned to a U.S. government agency facility in Georgia. She has been employed at the facility since on or about February 13, and has held a Top Secret clearance during that time. On or about May 9, Winner printed and improperly removed classified intelligence reporting, which contained classified national defense information from an intelligence community agency, and unlawfully retained it. Approximately a few days later, Winner unlawfully transmitted by mail the intelligence reporting to an online news outlet.

Update: This doesn't seem to herald a reckoning -- many are pointing out that the national-secrets leaker seems to have been caught only due to very sloppy spycraft:

The outlet leaked to is being named as the Intercept by some, though that's not in the charges, so I don't know if it's true or not.

So I wouldn't take this as evidence that there's a move against the Deep State leakers. Just seems to be bad spycraft by a would-be spy.

My point is a TS clearance should not be given out to just any contractor she was not military she took no oath. A 20 y/o in the military who has a clearance has been through basic and advanced training before they see any classified information and is subject to the UCMJ.

She should not have had clearance she sure as hell should not have had it in the first six months on the job.

I mean, according to the warrant, she has admitted downloading and sending the document. Admitted knowing it contained information that could harm US security.

Interim Clearances are pretty quick to be granted, since they require less work. It's possible her investigation was still ongoing. Or the reports are poorly written, and she's had a clearance for a while and just started this job in Feb.

They appear to have hacked into the accounts of a company that did voter registration, but didn't get any farther than that. What it does show is the vulnerability of software to be corrupted, again not new, but something the states that want online voting are ignoring. Along with the states that don't have paper ballots as back ups.

She served at Fort Meade, then got a job as a contractor at Fort Gordon after she was discharged. I retired from the Marines in 2014 and still have my TS/SCI because I support military training and it requires I have an active clearance. I went through 4 different schools at Goodfellow as do almost all military SIGINT collectors and analysts.

Pretty solid analysis here. I would assign this a probable on the validity meter. She sees some supposition, with a few anecdotes, no technical data, and says this is the proof. She only proved that she is not very smart, both in the content of what she stole and in the execution of the information transfer. Winner, Winner lucky there is no BIG CHICKEN DINNER.

I am tracking your point now. A lot of my Marines were leaving active duty with 2 or 3 years left on their TS/SCI's and were hot commodities for Cubic, SAIC, Man-Tech, et al.
