Left, Get This, Freaks Out Over No One Paying Any Mind to Their Silly Monster Baby Asses

The top 15 over-the-top reactions from the left -- but is there any other kind of reaction from the left?

Below, some of the ones I found.

This is a common signal from Progressive Messaging Central. The claim being made is that the Paris Accords are simultaneously an ineffectual nothingburger of meaningless symbolism, so why even bother withdrawing?, but also are The Only Thing That Will Keep the Earth from Literally Dying.

Obviously, these can't both be true at once: Either the Accords do something, or they do not do something. They cannot exist in a state of quantum indeterminacy where they remain in a mixed probabilistic waveform of both "doing something" and "doing nothing" until a Progressive Political Physicist takes a measurement of which state is most helpful for his Religious Fervor at this moment.

This one isn't over the top, so much as stupid.

Now for some over the top ones:

For context, remember this is not the first environmental panic we've seen. There have been others. Prior to the Global Warming Panic, we infamously had the Global Cooling Panic, with dire warnings of a coming ice age.

We also had the Population Bomb panic, in which serial environmental catastrophy fantasist Paul Ehrlich warned that we would have so many people we would all starve and eat each other, and recommended government-mandated sterilizations and abortions to save the earth.

It was that panic that birthed the sci-fi tale Soylent Green.

Anyway, I mention this, because even though the Population Bomb fable is thoroughly discredited, the environmental maniacs keep coming back to it. The Population Bomb is always in the mix -- Humanity, as Agent Smith said, is a virus the earth needs to be cured of.

Watch this Atlantic employee (I have no idea what she actually claims her vocation is) link global warming with, get this, the need for government subsidized abortion:

She's making the case, obliquely, that we have to stop the Population Bomb. If we can't have the Paris Accords, we damn sure better have Less People Making the Earth sick.

Because Humans are a disease, and Progressivism is the cure.

These are the #Science Lovers you're supposed to bow to -- still believing in End of the World religious predictions that failed to materialize 40 years ago.

Speaking of religion: Local atheist now prays for heaven.

Breaking: Trump's musky strength leads more nonbelievers to God.

And now, a warning:

Gloating Threat Level: Urgent.

By the way, we're all going to die anyway:

Calling my shot now: You will soon see stories claiming that, somehow, a minor change in the Earth's temperature causes more asteroid impacts, by Reversing the Polarities of earth's magnetic field, or something.

They've previously claimed climate change causes more earthquakes and volcanoes, so, you know. This is not as far-fetched a speculation on my part as it might seem.

Oh Yeah: We got word from the Oracle of Chicago.

Wasn't this loathsome cunt supposed to stop the oceans from rising due to the sheer radiant glory of his worshipfullness?

5 "You will soon see stories claiming that, somehow, a minor change in the
Earth's temperature causes more asteroid impacts, by Reversing the
Polarities of earth's magnetic field, or something."

The polarity of Earth's magnetic field is actually reversing, BTW. That's why the "areas of magnetic anomaly" keep getting larger, etc. So, yeah, it's almost certain that will be blamed on global warming.

There's a part in the Larry Niven book "Inferno" where they come across an environmentalist/scammer. He's chained to a stationary bike that drives a generator. In front of him is a big diesel generator with its exhaust pipe right in his face. If he pedals hard enough the diesel shuts down and he breathes clean air but when he stops it starts up again. Hayes better watch what he's asking for, a just God might have some ideas for ones like him.

Prior to the Global Warming Panic, we infamously had the Global Cooling Panic, with dire warnings of a coming ice age.

And while most of us probably remember the global cooling scare of the 70s, the 50s warming hype was before my time - but Frank Capra, with the help of the MST3K guy, made a nifty little propaganda video that Al Gore evidently stole liberally from.

Africa sure isn't.

Take, for example, Ethiopia. By midcentury they're projected to have 175 million mouths to feed. In an agriculturally unblessed country that has traditionally had major problems with feeding far fewer than that.

175M is a staggering number. That's about as many people who lived in the entire USA combined, circa the 1960s. Just in Ethiopia alone.

Except, good golly gosh, it's the strangest thing. Those folks who have for many years now been earnestly warning us about the terrible dangers posed by Too Many Bebbehs? And how we need to Have Fewer Bebbehs?

They don't seem to have anything at all to say about the number of bebbehs being cranked out when it's happening in Africa. Total radio silence on that topic.

But by all means sweat the polar bears! It makes it easier to ignore your own impending death as life passes you by.

91 The asteroid tweet is one of the factors confirming AGW is a fraud. Asteroid impacts are proven extinction event generators. Mass extermination of the species.

We will get hit by a big one again. We can potentially detect and avert this with existing technology. But we barely give a fuck. That is human nature.

Instead, we have this global push to change our way of life to supposedly avert a poorly modeled potential threat that will primarily inconvenience our descendants if true. If it was a real threat and not a huge power and cash grab we would let the last generation before NY needed water taxies deal with it. No one would give 1/10th of a fuck.

95 Our founding fathers understood the nature of man and the nature of government. No matter its original intent, governments eventually prioritize themselves over the people. They find ways to justify ever increasing control and ever increasing taxes. Climate change is the ideal rationalization--it's completely made up, there is no way to know if anything that is done is having an effect, and one can always argue that man if messing up the climate. This is why politicians pursue it so rabidly, even though an 18-year hiatus shows conclusively the climate models, upon which the hysteria is based, are bullshit.

Posted by: IanDeal at June 01, 2017 05:59 PM (teGBX)

96 I liken the global warming hysteria to "peak oil."

Yeah we're eventually going to run out of oil, no one's arguing that. But we shouldn't stop using it BECAUSE it's going to run out. Eventually it will become more expensive than other forms of energy and then we'll simply switch to that.

All the people who said oil supply would never make it to the new millennium were obviously lying.

115 The latest bit of journo-list-ism on the withdrawal from the Paris accords. This from the _Daily Telegraph_, which purports to be a *conservative* UK news source.

"Environmental campaigners said the American absence will make it
considerable harder for the remaining 190 or so countries to reach their
agreed goals, given that the US is responsible for about 15 percent of
global emissions of carbon and promised $3 billion to help other
nations."

$3B? What the Paris accords specifically called for, starting less than three years from now, was a sum of $100B *annually* to be "mobilized" for "climate adjustment aid" to developing countries.

If you figure that the money thus "mobilized" was going to be coming from the pockets of Uncle Sugar and pretty much no one else, congratulations on your skill at reading between the lines. That's exactly how it was going to work.

The magnetic poles have been flipping polarity with great regularity for millions of years, as recorded by remanent magnetism in the lava rock flanking sea-floor spreading ridges. The flip seems to happen in an eye-blink of geologic time, as intervals of no magnetism, or of greatly-reduced magnetism don't appear to exist; it's binary. And, statistically, we are long overdue for such a flip to happen.

Quick Bing:

While combustion of natural gas does produce carbon dioxide, it produces about 30 percent less than oil and 45 percent less than coal, and natural gas doesn't produce ash particles like coal and oil do, which adds to air pollution.

No question about the particulate problem, which coal in particular has.

The difference must arise from the greater extent of reduction (hydrogenation in this case) of natural gas compared to coal or oil, so that oxidation of H atoms to water (very exothermic) contributes to the energy output.

You can - and must - in fact destroy the religious cult of "climate change", and not just discard stupid things like Paris as "bad deals".

The American public has never succumbed to the lysenkoist disinformation campaign, or the corruption of real science required to sell it.

So in fact debunking the very basis for Paris AND all of the collateral crap, from the int'l level to the state level in the US (CA, etc), is an important thing to do. Otherwise you're just a speed bump, potentially, and not a change in direction.

And there's not the slightest bit of tactical or political trade-off involved. Not a bit of logical or political tension in saying that Paris is a bad deal, but that it also is based on non-science. In fact, quite the opposite.

260 I've been reading a bunch of my dad's old science-fiction from the '60s and early '70s (when he stopped reading because he got sick of the constant nihilism).

Every one of the stories from the period references overpopulation. Not one imagines it to be solved in a positive fashion. (In the '50s, you'd get that.) Every one imagines poverty, starvation, overcrowding, etc.

This, while Norman Borlaug was actually actively solving the problem, and these guys were usually up on the latest science. (Traditionally. I guess by the '60s they were just reading social "scientists" like Ehrlich.)

271 A few years back during the height of the global warming craze (and that is already in the past, except for the people with tremendous buy in a certain amount of skepticism is starting to rear it's head) in various science magazines and sites that entire field of science was somewhat like a drunken bar conversation. A bunch of drunk guys all sitting around a table, and thinking, what is the most outlandish thing that global warming could cause. Could, emphasized, because it's not like they did any particular research, they were just speculating. At it's height, Global warming could cause everything and it's opposite. It could dry out the world and cause an ice age. Increase mosquitoes but kill bees. Increase or decrease the birthrate (depending upon which the particular scientist thought was bad.) They'd even apply it to things totally unrelated. For instance, there was something or another they observed on the other side of the galaxy (or universe) which I don't even remember except that they described it as being like "global warming in space." And no matter what global warming did, all it created was harms. There were no upsides what so ever. Let me ask you, in a chaotic system, say, the stock market- when something changes, up, down, it doesn't matter. Is it even possible that everyone involved loses? No! Chaotic systems don't work that way. As long as the environment stays within the range that support life- both of which the Earth has already seen and will see again, there will be winners and losers. Humans too. Even in an ice age, we'll adapt. Even if Ohio becomes a sea (again) We'll adapt. But. In our modern culture human adaptability is precisely our financial power. And regardless of hot or cold, or "we don't know." Their solution is all the same- to take our financial power and use it as they see fit. Generally in a direction that doesn't actually do anything useful, because they don't even know enough to do something useful.

On top of that. Climate change is itself entirely natural. We've been hotter and colder. It hasn't even been a million years since most of the northern cities were under a mile of ice. CO2 has been more and less. Those events aren't necessarily correlated, and if they are, we don't know which leads, but it seems like it might be temperature. Rather, they want to fight climate change. Basically, they want to be god, setting the world's thermostat to their own convenience. Setting the world's thermostat isn't necessarily itself a wrong idea, though we have no idea how to do it, but one thing is for sure. I'm damned well not going to let someone who blames me for having set it wrong in the first place be the ones with their hands on the control. Especially when they don't really care about hotter or colder (most of the people who want the population to drop to a million odd people are on their side) so much as being able to justify control over the wealth that we've earned.

*sigh* TLDR, yep, they'll certainly speculate that global warming will cause more asteroid impacts.

275 Trump is more conservative than Reagan

I've thought about it recently, and Reagan's greatest effect on the US was primarily societal. He brought back patriotism. And he was a big plus in foreign policy.

Governmentally, he rebuilt the military, and cut taxes. But actual systemic reform? Not a whole lot that I can recall, and did a few things that made things worse (amnesty, EMTALA).

Trump has the potential to REALLY reform government. That, at least, was his stated intention in the campaign. Hopefully, he'll leave it a shadow of its former self.

287 The difference must arise from the greater extent of reduction (hydrogenation in this case) of natural gas compared to coal or oil, so that oxidation of H atoms to water (very exothermic) contributes to the energy output.

Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at June 01, 2017 06:28 PM (Z4Ct4)

Nevertheless, the energy density of a hydrocarbon fuel increases with decreasing hydrogen content. Methane contains less energy per gram than ethane, ethane less than propane, gasoline less than diesel fuel, and diesel fuel less than coal. The heat of combustion of hydrogen is very high, but hydrogen is so damned light, you can't fit very much of it in a given space.

It may sound counter-intuitive, but there are more hydrogen atoms in a gallon of gasoline than in a gallon of liquid hydrogen. Carbon is the "glue" that binds hydrogen atoms into a compact package to make them useful as fuel.

329 Nevertheless, the energy density of a hydrocarbon fuel increases with decreasing hydrogen content.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at June 01, 2017 06:43 PM (7MWCL)

First, I'm not surprised by the liquid hydrogen point. I'd have guessed that, since hydrogen atoms in a hydrocarbon molecule pairwise are well within van der Waals radii of each other.

I don't think that the energy density per gram (i.e., the specific energy density) is the relevant consideration vis a vis CO2 production.

I think the relevant consideration would be the number of carbon atoms oxidized in the production of a given amount of heat (i.e., the energy density per mole of carbon).

361 Some morons here brought up an interesting idea last week - about submitting the Paris thing to the Senate as a treaty, for a put up/shut up moment.

Technically a bit off (esp. now, of course), but at its heart a very sound idea.

Kyoto was never submitted - as I recall a 95-5 non-binding sense of the Senate resolution rejected it, anyway.

Consistent with my general reco to the WH - to force politics back into politics, by actually forcing votes on key issues - it would be smart to force a vote on a sense of the Senate resolution on Paris. Something for Mitch to do, so it won't happen.

But with a more politically ambitious WH, and a non-useless Senate majority, this would be an automatic move that would generate great butthurt among the worst incumbents, and put a few vulnerable Dems on the spot (which should be part of *every* f***ing thing the WH and McConnell do - but apparently that would be too much like the old Washington, where there were politics, and votes, and things like that).

Their children are *literally* their future, as in if they don't have enough children no one will take care of them and they will starve to death.

There are plenty of people living on this planet who are like five steps down the civilizational ladder, and there are way too many people who think you can pull them up without doing the work that was required for us to get up each rung.

It would be interesting to have something like one of these numpty Peace Corps groups that focused on getting people up *just one rung* on the ladder and not trying to provide Solar Internet Bicycles to everyone crammed fifteen to a tepee made of crap that has no water or power.

If people are starving you gotta first stop the thieving overlords, then you gotta teach 'em about irrigation and fertilizer. Don't start trying to get them to build a microwave oven with a handful of rocks and a rudimentary lathe.

Posted by: gNewt at June 01, 2017 06:58 PM (GTeFT)

Possibly, but it's an incremental difference.

Here's the Wiki on heats of combustion of various fuels, calculated by various methods. Note that they are determined by heat/weight, not by volume. Gasoline and diesel are close to one another in heat per weight, but gasoline is a little less dense than diesel, so heat per volume is closer. Hydrogen loses out big time, because it is so light, a large volume of it weighs little; even as a liquid.

I agree with you on that completely. A lot of times during the Summer, I carry a Berretta .32ACP Tomcat because I can carry it my back pocket. Back in my former life, on duty I always carried a .45 because I wasn't concerned about concealment.

Hydrogen, all by its lonesome is a shitty fuel. It works for rockets because weight is critical, bulk not so much.
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at June 01, 2017 06:58 PM (7MWCL)

I think the combination of liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen are considered the ideal rocket fuel because it provides the most energy per unit of weight (or volume, I forget which). But liquid hydrogen is hard to handle and thus expensive.

Just my opinion, but I think the tried and true combination of RP-1 (similar to kerosene) and LOX is best for a first stage, since that stage makes up most of the mass of the rocket. LH2 and LOX are better suited for upper stages, where the amounts required are much smaller.

Nothing's stopping you from doing your part and sending money to Paris out of your own pocket, unless you're on Food Stamps. I doubt they take EBT.

402 My agency had a gunfight in which two of our officers armed with 9mm peppered the bad guy 14 times (true, their shot-placement wasn't very good, but still that's not very impressive). My buddy with the .45ACP ended it with two hits to the bad guy's upper torso.

Posted by: Retire Buckeye Cop is now an engineer at June 01, 2017 07:01 PM (5Yee7)

I know everyone has moved on, but what bugs me about the shooting community is that it's full of anecdotes like this that are treated as if there's useful information in it, but there isn't.

What 9mm load? Where were the hits? What 45 load? What order were the hits in? What did the autopsy say? How many similar tests do you have?

9mm vs 45 is like V6 vs v8. Is that an Indy 500 v8 or a crappy 80s diesel conversion v8?

Is that an oil-burning late 90s dodge V6 or a GM 3.8 Turbo from the Grand National?

Just not enough information.

I've never called myself "conservative". Occasionally a "radical Jeffersonian". Since I'd be fine with a complete reset to 1791 (and the amendments to the 14th), I can't see that as "conservative".

But I used to talk with a lot of conservatives on Twitter and IRL, because they won't kill you like liberals would, when you disagreed. DJT revealed a lot of interesting things.

404 I just did the calculation. A liter of LH2 (density 70.85 g/L) has 70.85 moles of H atoms, whereas a liter of n-hexane density 654.8 g/L) has 106.37 moles of H atoms.

Interesting.

And that liter of n-hexane can be safely stored for years in a one-liter pop bottle, but a liter of liquid hydrogen, lasts for a few hours in an insulate Dewar flask, unless some hugely expensive refrigeration system is in place. Which would you rather run your car with?

I think combat is just ... combat.

The weapon doesn't matter. It's really will vs will. Occasionally , a mechanical function will get hit and fail spectacularly.

But my experience, and the guy's whose experience that I rely on say that it is a matter of staying in the fight. Human will to win, I guess.

412 Rockets: Look up specific impulse. H2 and O2 are pretty damn high.

I think H2 and Fluorine would be higher, if not the highest, but the output is HF, hydrofluoric acid, which is toxic as hell.

I see something about lithium and fluurine maybe having the highest specific impulse.

Specific impulse is best thought of as the ratio of thrust to propellant mass consumption. Force per (mass per second).

414 "Because Humans are a disease, and Progressivism is the cure."

If human beings are a disease then Progressivism (Socialism/Communism) is in fact the cure, as proved by the more than 100 million bodies it has buried over the last century. No single idea has resulted in more people losing their lives.

If human beings are not a disease, however, then Progressivism (Socialism/Communism) is the disease.

I encourage freedom loving people to visit the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation website at victimsofcommunism.org
