Overnight Open Thread (27 May 2017)

Do enjoy this weekend but do take time to remember why we have this long holiday weekend to begin with.

Safe Spaces

'Marie Claire': Men aren't allowed to criticize 'safe spaces'. Safe spaces are for losers who can't handle free speech. Ooops. I might've triggered Jessica Valenti. Deal with it Jessica.

Leaks

You know, with all these leaks and some of the latest ones sounding incredibly stupid, I'm starting to think that these are part of an effort to find who is leaking material. It is even more odd to break this story at 5PM on a Friday before a holiday weekend. Most people will be out and busy all weekend and not really pay attention to the news. WaPo has had this info since December so it really is weird that they published it when they did unless they just got some corroborating info that enabled them to publish. That's not clear in the article but it would be funny if the corroborating info was fake meant to trace leakers. Of note, the NYT has now published their article and it has some differences. Sort of like what you would do when trying to find leakers. Put different details in different reports, etc. and then see what info goes where. As to the actual allegations in the latest leak, here's some good analysis from WarNewsUpdate's Editor:

The more that I think about this Washington Post exclusive .... the more I realise that it has a lot of holes in it. One .... the Russians would never permit such a communications link. Two .... Michael Flynn who was present at the meeting would know that they would never permit it. Three .... what's the point of having a secret communications channel via through the Russian embassy to the Kremlin .... where it would not be secret at all. Four .... President Trump is the President .... he can do anything he wants with the executive branch .... including having his own direct line to the Kremlin should he (and Putin) want to. But I digress .... what the Trump administration wanted (and I am sure the Kremlin wanted it too) was a private back-channel .... and for those who may not know .... this is how it works. If the Trump administration wanted Putin to know something independent from normal diplomatic channels .... it will be done by having someone President Trump trusts telling someone that President Putin trusts in person (that Russian official will be living in the U.S. .... probably near Washington DC). That person .... once the message has been received .... will then be taking the first flight to Moscow.

Sadly, this latest leak helps the Russians. If true, they just revealed to them that we were able to monitor Kislyak's private comms. Related: The Kremlin seems to have bet big on the willingness of U.S. intelligence agencies to leak.

Eagle Cam

Cord Cutting

I really need to do this. US TV subscribers are ditching cable and satellite faster than ever.

Unprofessional Intercepts

Russian fighter intercepted, then barrel rolled atop a KC-10 flying over Syria. Fighter jocks being fighter jocks I guess.

Health

24 health 'facts' that are actually completely wrong.

Paris Climate Deal

Well this sounds promising. Trump tells confidants U.S. will quit Paris climate deal.

7 Baby Sister Update

Eventful day today: took Joyce on picnic lunch at local state park (beautiful!), but she ended up giving it back. Not sure what caused this: could have been heat, could have been new chemo (they upped her dosage), some combination of these, or something else entirely.

Got her back home and into bed for a much needed nap, and headed back to the hotel for our own quiet time.

Went back for dinner: she was rested and showered - feeling *much*'better

Ate a decent meal, then shmoozed a bit, then off to bed. We said our goodbyes (return home tomorrow) and parted.

Impressions this trip: there's no question that she's doing better cognitively, and mostly physically (the blood clots are a step backwards, but not insurmountable). I do wish Hubby would be more gentle with her, but there's very little can say in that regard. I'm sure we'll (or at least I'll) be back this summer.

Please pray for renewed strength and healing.

[To my fellow, beloved Hordelings, thank you all in advance for your prayers and well-wishes for my sister and our family.]

Also: I'm checking out early tonight - early flight out. Be well, Horde!

You're First In Our Hearts.

Thank you-- I appreciate the kindness. I don't want to beat the subject to death, but after posting last night, I got ruthlessly analytical (hey, I'm an INTJ to the max, for morons who have had to be Myers-Briggs-typed) about why baiting bugs me so much, purely apart from personal history. I should thank Slap a second time for nudging me to this bit of enlightenment.

I think it has to do with the fact that that kind of stuff (rubbing a loss or second-place finish in the loser's face) has become nearly ubiquitous in the wider culture in recent years. Such as bat flipping in baseball, end zone dances in football, etc. And we see so much of it on the D side of the political aisle: Nancy Pelosi's little parade with the oversized gavel; Teh Won's "I won"; the gloating that goes on among the lefties whenever someone like Breitbart or Scalia dies, etc. I guess it's a sign of aging, but when I compare the disgraceful "nah, nah, hey, hey" chanting at Bush 43 during TFG's 2009 inauguration with the respect shown to Eisenhower (and Nixon too) at JFK's inauguration in 1961, I get nostalgic for civility and what I was taught as a kid about sportsmanship. Sometimes I think a large chunk of society has regressed to childishness (as distinct from childlikeness, which is a good thing).

Okay, end of lecture. I also want to thank CDR M for the M-Day thread. As I fessed up on the pet thread, my dad (82nd Airborne, WWII) died suddenly of a heart attack on Memorial Day weekend, so it's always a heavy weekend for me. But I am truly grateful for all the morons who have served or are serving in the Armed Forces. God bless you all.

And I commented further down the thread (in reference to that post) that it was one reason why I had mostly stopped posting on ONTs. Some people tried to explain that it's just silly fun (which I knew and know to be the case), but I felt compelled to explain that baiting behavior is not as easy for me to shrug off as it is for most people.

Hope that helps. I think most people by the time they get into their twenties have at least one sore spot somewhere in their psyches-- it's just that the location varies enormously from one person to the next. I must say I'm glad that the Horde is one place where it's safe to admit where one's scar tissue is located, 'cuz we all have some. (Oops, did I just call the HQ a "safe space"?)

After the service, some twentysomething accused my son of wearing a costume as no one joins the Navy any more. God saw to it I guess that I didn't go there, nor to any other war.

166 Greetings:

Back in the summer of the last '68, I was doing my military service down in Texas, which, besides the Bronx, is the place I'd most like to be from. For several months, I was assigned to the base's funeral detail. We would provide pallbearers and a rifle squad for those requesting military funerals in the local area.

Military-wise, it wasn't bad duty. On the days when we weren't scheduled for a funeral, we would spend several hours practicing our "drill & ceremonies" and a couple more squaring away our uniforms and equipment. On funeral days, we would head out as early as necessary on a 44-passenger bus, often in civilian clothes or else fatigues with our first-class uniforms and equipment in tow. Often we would change into our duty uniforms at the funeral home, once in the casket display room, or on the bus itself.

It being Texas and the Viet Nam war being in full swing, we often had several funerals a week to perform. There was a certain spectrum from the World War graduates through the Viet Nam casualties. The former might involve a local veterans' group and an afterward BBQ or such. The latter were somewhat more emotionally raw as most of us were facing our own deployments in the near future.

Two funerals of the latter sort have stayed with me through the years. The first was of a young Private First Class who had been MIA for several months before his remains were recovered. I was on the pallbearer squad that day and when we went to lift the casket, it almost flew up in the air. There was so little of the young soldier left that we totally overestimated the weight we were lifting and almost looked decidedly unprofessional.

The other was that of a Negro Specialist 4th Class. I was in the rifle squad that day. In the rendering of military honors, there is a momentary pause between the end of the (21-gun) rifle salute and the beginning of the playing of "Taps". It is a moment of profound silence in most cases. During that moment, the young soldier's mother gave out a yowl from the depths of her grief that so startled me that I almost dropped the rifle out of my hands. That yowl echoes within me still.

I'll readily admit that, as a result of my experiences, I became much imbued with a sense of duty and respect to and for our fallen. Hopefully, today, when our media do their reporting they will show some of the same and let "Taps" be played out in its entirety. It would be nice for a change.

168 We have our beloved SMFH, who is awesome (and, I'll add gratuitously, pretty damn fly), and while she has been very good at what she does and kinda scares me something in my gut would be more devastated if she'd be hurt (or worse) on the front lines than if a guy, even an outstanding guy, suffered the same fate.
--

IMHO, men are biologically wired to protect women. For the species to continue, there MUST be women available.

That's why women should not be on the front lines. Outside of the biology of it, men are wired to protect women, which interferes with "killing the guy who is trying to kill me." It's... distracting at a time you cannot be distracted, since you life depends on it. I admire the women who can get through the training (I never could) however, In battle.. please put them somewhere else.

172 Women "serving" in the military"

During WWII, there were women in units that shuttled Lend Lease airplanes (P-39's) up to Alaska, where the Russians picked them up and flew them back to the USSR.

My Grandmother, while she wasn't in uniform, worked for the Army Air Corps in a "classified" job. She was the first women that was assigned to rebuild Norden bomb sights. They would bring the broken and damaged Nordens to Wright Patterson to be rebuilt. Her late husband (my grandfather) had taught her how to read blue prints (he was an architect for a while). Classified work, that took brains and skill (my grandmother was not a particularly big women).

178 howdy horde....just wanted to give an update to the Days of Our Lives from last night.

So, I guess at this little cookout, everyone "had someone" and he was feeling particularly lonely, which was why he was so sad. Why he didn't want to talk to me about it...who knows.

But, after talking to him extensively...the long distance is taking quite a toll on him. He is not used to being tethered to his phone/computer, and feeling like he has to check in all the time. Which...I guess I get, but everything you read/hear about long-distance relationships is that consistent communication is absolutely necessary. It's pretty much all we have.

He said he is used to, with his current friends....not texting much, but just talking to them in real life, and that's what he prefers. I told him he was comparing apples and oranges. Sure, I understand if you are going to see someone in an hour or the next morning, I can understand his point. But, we can't just be like...."See you in 4 months, bye" It's gonna be a while before we see each other (if at all, at this point) We have to keep in touch, that's all there is to it. I understand it isn't ideal for him, and I'm sorry that it adds a layer of stress to his life.

He's not done with me, nor I with him, but I think the situation is just hitting him a lot harder than in the past few weeks.

Just wanted to keep ya'll updated.

And this makes sense - MSG is nothing more than a common amino acid with a sodium atom added. The placebo effect is more than strong enough to account for the negative effects sometimes associated with MSG.

You know what happens when we combine that same sodium atom with plain old water? Sodium hydroxide, aka lye. It'll eat holes in you if you let it.

But, that's chemistry for you. You can take a couple of harmless things, combine them together, and things can go sideways.

So, something that may or may not have been pointed out.

When people are starting a relationship, they are usually on their best behavior.

Your guy seems to be coming across as needy and emotional. So it's possible that his BEST behavior is needy and emotional.

What is his worst behavior going to look like? Do you really want to go there?

Also... just for fun, look up Histrionic Personality Disorder and Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

That was one of the things that the "24 health 'facts' that are actually completely wrong" article was claiming to disprove. But, when you look at their "proof", there isn't much there. They actually use the phase "scientific consensus". But, no link or anything. Just that, plus some stuff about how MSG is made from harmless sodium and a harmless amino acid, so it must be ok.

MSG never bothered me, but with so many people saying it bothers them, I think it is the opposite of science to just shrug and say it's all in their head.

You are completely out of control.

Pharmacies make you show ID for controlled substances. The ID requirement for OTC medicine containing pseudoephedrine is a stupid overreaction to the whole meth thing, as I'm sure you know. I don't like being catalogued and scrutinized just because I want to get my sinuses unclogged.

My plan, even before talking to him today, was to back off. But, now, I am afraid it will come across as petty or like I am punishing him or something. So, I may just have to be a little more strategic in my backing off.

I actually backed off about 3 weeks ago, and he came back at me stronger than ever, and in fact got upset that I was acting distant.

From wife's cousin

20 yr retired Army

Here's
some ground rules for this weekend, Memorial Day Weekend.

1.
Don't wish me a Happy Memorial Day - there ain't nothing happy about brave men
and women dying

2.
It's not a holiday or a sale, it's a Day of Remembrance

3.
You want to know the true meaning, visit your local Cemetery or a VA Hospital,
not Disneyland or mall

4.
Don't tell me how great anyone in political power is; tell me about someone who
gave the ultimate sacrifice for this country, or I can tell you about The
Montford Point Marines during WWII.

5.
Don't tell me I don't know what I am talking about, I have carried the burden
all too many times for warriors who now stand their post for God.

6.
Say a prayer, and then raise a glass and thank God for the men/women who are no
longer here.

PS:
Do NOT "Thank" a living Veteran for his/her service... we'll get
honored on Veterans Day in November!!

This
is time to remember that the true price of freedom is paid in the lives that
defend it. Honor our brothers and sisters that have given the last full measure
to secure our freedoms

ONE is a rather poor sample size.

Um, no, years is rather RARE.

Nearly everybody wants to meet up at some point to decide if it's worth carrying on. Because if you wait months/years then meet and it doesn't fly, look at all that time you wasted.

A friend was gonna wait 6 months to meet a guy. That was too long. Need to find out from her if they ever met.

When I was in Detroit I tried with a chick in Rochester, New York. We only waited a few weeks. Waiting months/years is typically pointless.

If you are prepared to hop on a plane and fly for eight hours to Paris to meet some emotionally fragile young man, why won't you hop in a car and drive for an hour and half to meet some real good men?

374 @358

I have read /seen some 2 or 3 years, 5 years, whatever. It was a bigger sample size than One....was just giving an extreme example.

Listen, I agree with you....years seems bizarre to me. I know I couldn't do it.

For me....it would be 6 months from beginning to meeting. So...about 4 months from now. And, even then, it feels like forever.

If I met someone online nearby, like within 2 or 3 hours of me....I would want to meet much, much quicker, so as to not waste my time.

Posted by: Tickled Pink at May 28, 2017 12:49 AM (smD62)

375 You have studiously ignored my suggestion to volunteer at USO or a VA hospital. I seriously doubt there is any small town in a Midwest State more than a hundred miles from a larger center with a VA hospital or a military base with a USO presence. If you are prepared to hop on a plane and fly for eight hours to Paris to meet some emotionally fragile young man, why won't you hop in a car and drive for an hour and half to meet some real good men?

This is actually a really good idea.

Europeans of a certain class have entirely different standards than we do.

Regardless of how I feel about that, if it didn't bother his wife, I'm not sure why it should concern anyone else and I can think of no reason whatsoever why a daughter should not stand by her father's casket, regardless of her parents' behaviour.

452 so, anyway, I have been ranting and raving to Mrs.YankeeFifth about the stupid personalized license plates we have been coming across. Today, after grocery shopping we were walking to our car and there was a prius with a bike rack and some liberal bumper stickers right behind our car. I pointed out the stupid personalized license plate and Mrs.YankeeFifth was sounding it out when she suddenly said it aloud and said "what a stupid license plate." She was right by the driver side window of the car which was rolled down and the driver heard every bit of it.

Mrs.YankeeFifth blushed slightly but the guy driving the car turned beet red. wonder how long he has to keep that plate?

Guess I am going to have to set a better example for her.

Good points. Thank you.

One minor quibble is that I always thank vets for their service, regardless of whether it's Memorial Day.

532 And Montana seems like a really excellent place for
an adventure, and I don't know why Miley might not like to go out, say,
fly-fishing there. Fly fishing can be very adventurous.

534 453 I personally think the observation that the leaders of France, the UK, Luxembourg (heh, not like the others but singled out for rump wrangling), Italy, and Germany have no children of their own is astute.

Hmmm. I did not sire any children but I assure everyone here that I am 100% straight and enjoy women very, very much.

Sometimes having children just doesn't happen for various reasons. I was born with some internal birth defects "down there" that weren't discovered until age 27 or so. It required several surgeries to correct but I suspect that was the reason I never became a father.

546 Why do you think that the Trump campaign would not set up back channel communications with Russia? During WW2, the allies had secret connections with senior German officials. We have the hot line to Russia. The initial communications between the US and North Vietnam were secret. Carter communicated with Iran in secret. Reagan with Iran. The list goes on and it is hardly exhaustive. I see nothing even slightly unusual about a presidential political campaign trying to set up secret connections with Russia. If Hillary did not have such connections I think that she would be incompetent. The vast majority of communications between countries is not done in the public eye. That is good for everyone.

547 If you haven't read Max Hastings, but you are reading this thread, you should consider it. His two books about the ends of WWII, "Retribution," and "Armageddon," are classics. If you really want to understand the sacrifices made by veterans, to the degree that you can from the comfort of your own home, there are no better books IMHO.

He's as readable as Ambrose.

548 "America owes an unpayable debt to our fallen heroes & their families."
I'm going to respectfully disagree with the "unpayable" part. We pay that debt by continuing to keep our country free (on the political side) and a Constitutional republic. It's the ONLY coin in which we can pay that debt. Sadly, that's the biggest deficit we have right now, far outpacing the fiscal deficit our gov't runs up.

549 I lost my Dad just a few days after Memorial Day, 1965. It's always tough around his birthday and this weekend.

All gave some, some gave all.

Miss you, Dad!
