Cowbell? New Jobless Claims Rise At Lowest Rate In 44 Years

"New" jobless claims, contrasted to continuing jobless status, and it's the rate of increase not the absolute level that's particularly tiny but still, that's a nice mark: Only 1000 new applicants in May.

Thursday's report beat forecasters' expectations, which were for new jobless claims, adjusted for seasonal variations, to rise to 237,000.

And it provided a good sign for the economy. Few claims indicate that layoffs are rare, and that, in turn, net job creation is strong.

Economists believe the real growth sector in the economy is Internet Trolls paid by Russian Spymasters to Hack the Election.

It begins again...?

28 Our local media are doing the MFM's work by telling the FSA's and LIV's that Trump wants to make them starve to death by cutting food stamps.

They're totally ignoring the fact that there are more jobs available here now, and new home construction and sales are up.

In 2008, there was a yuge multi-million $$$$ riverfront development in the planning stages, that was going to be an extension of the Historic District, that was cancelled.

Front page of today's paper is it's back on.

So yeah, Trump has been a disaster.

29 And from the art thread: "From Drudge: California farmers face urgent shortage of farm workers, blame Trump"
===

Man, I'm no fancy economist, but I suspect there is a correlation between "wages offered" and "workers available."

Almost something like "higher wages draws more workers who will seek out those higher wages."

But, that's racist math an' such.

I also suspect we're about to be hit with "do you want to pay more for your lettuce? Huh, do you?"
"Do you want to pick lettuce?"

From the same crowd who is demanding $15/hr at McDonalds.
On behalf of corporate farms with millions in revenue.

82 Why the "don't give a shit's and are living in ex-wife's trailer" aren't segregated from the "unemployed but working ass off to find a job" and simply statistically discarded is beyond me.

One of the unemployment rates ignores those who have stopped looking. When the economy improves, the "stopped looking" number decreases, as many formerly discouraged are, uh, encouraged.

But not all, so eventually that number levels off.

That being said, the way the stats were massaged and adjusted, it's hard to know how accurate any of the numbers are or were. Ultimately, though, you know if you have a job, and you probably know if your neighbor does, and people respond more to that than vague numbers about "the economy."

142 The labor participation rate is still way too low, last I saw, more adults were working in the early 2000s than today despite the population increase.

Posted by: Maritime

Labor participation about 60% or so now. Almost twenty years ago it was about 65% and our budgets balanced.

Puerto Rico has a 40% labor participation rate and is bankrupt.

Getting it 5% higher (quick math) would mean nearly 20 million new jobs required. That's not going to happen unless business taxes are cut. Democrats will fight that, tooth and nail, because they don't give a f_ck that 20 million new jobs would be created. And their patriotism, or lack thereof.

143 First-time claims are a shitty indicator, always have been. Largely unfit for purpose from the get-go, then cynically gamed by the government's statistical stewmakers into complete lack of trustworthiness and/or utility.

You need to be looking down in the fine print, at stuff like hours worked, wages paid, and mean duration of unemployment, to get an idea whether the labor market is improving.

FYI, I do see some signs of just that. In one case just the other day, a literal sign, from a vendor apologizing for price increases and attributing part of the necessity of imposing same to their recently increased labor costs.

I have a part time job at an entertainment venue that's slated to close. The team associated with it is moving to a brand new venue and everyone has been told they will no longer have a job on October first. They are selling game tickets at the new venue.

Well... every time I talk to someone about what's happening, I get a new insight into mental illness.

Yesterday, a co-worker told me that the team moving to the new venue is not a done deal, and that although they have hired NO ONE from the current venue at the new venue, that she expects that our department will be working there. This is a person who owns a house, lives on her own and is seemingly functional.

Key word I guess is "seemingly."

Sigh.

Need to get out of there sooner rather than later. The crazy is really, really exhausting.

That wasn't a healthy economy, either. If you looked just below the surface of all the reports at the time, almost all of the job creation was shitty service sector jobs. Most of the so called job creation in those years was the melting away of the good stuff being replaced by baristas and fry cooks.

All through the Magnificent Epochal Obama Economic Renaissance, and all through the Terrible Drugstore-Cowboy Bush Economic Wasteland, I carefully tracked grocery outlays as a proxy for inflation.

Which was remarkably steady through both the Renaissance and Wasteland years. Also remarkably higher than what the federal economic spinmeisters claimed as an inflation rate during both administrations.

One thing that makes this difficult to get a handle on is stealth inflation via retail product packaging. That went on all during the Bush Wasteland years and the Obama Renaissance years, and it's still going on in the Scalpweasel Scheme years.

I had been about to pick up a half-gallon tub of a particular ice cream last week, and I suddenly said to myself, wait, something is weird. It looks the same and yet not the same.

Yep. What had been a half-gallon tub had been reduced, at the same sticker price, to only 75 percent of a half gallon. But cleverly presented so as to make it appear nothing had changed. Down to the grocer changing the shelving height so two of the smaller containers still neatly filled out the intershelf distance.

Please think about that when your kids ask you for input on their majors in college.

205 Ditto to those above pointing out the multiple problems with the economic "data". A while back I asked commenter redbanzai - who works in econometrics and forecasting - if the quality of govt. data had declined to the point that real analysts now used them less, or relied on them less than before, and I think she said "yes".

OT: Trump remarks to NATO were good, incl. the snark about the new HQ bldg., but all the focus on budget and GDP % misses the macro point he made less elegantly but correctly during the campaign - it's an alliance with fundamental problems of purpose and relevance.

For the super-simplified illustration, imagine a NATO where Germany is spending 2.5% of GDP on military efforts, and the UK 7%, and France 4%. This changes nothing about political will to actually do anything in a real world contingency. Changes nothing, really. The UK might - MIGHT - be of some marginal use in some imaginable scenario (though doubtful, any more), France might do some limited below-radar stuff in Africa as they've been doing for decades, Germany will remain as relevant as Uruguay to any real-world scenario.

225 Here's my guess on the wine whiners in CA being unable to find workers:

There already exists--and has for years--a farming method and machinery to mechanically harvest wine grapes.

The old vineyards aren't set up for that.

The same method is being used for olives.

What you have then, is farmers whining that their old methods aren't making them any money any more.

It's the guy out there with a horse-drawn plow complaining about tractors.

I also suspect a little snobbery--"my wine grapes are hand cut and that means a better wine."
If you really believe that, sell your wine at a premium and let the market put the proof.

The local public radio station had a live forum where a bunch of dingbat Democrat dignitaries were squeaking and beeping about The Resistance to Trump.

One of them -- I think it was former L.A. mayor Antonio Viva-La-Raza -- was incandescently indignant about how Trump has been repeatedly needling Angela Merkel about Germany not spending its minimum treaty-determined percent of GDP on defense.

Why, he spluttered, what if there's some sort of TERRIBLE GLOBAL CRISIS which requires COORDINATED INTERNATIONAL ACTION, and Trump has to pick up the phone to abjectly beg Merkel for assistance, and she won't take the call, because Trump's arrogant blundering has alienated a key ally?

I had to pull over. I couldn't drive for laughing. Merkel is supposed to do what again exactly in a global crisis? Dispatch the Bundeswehr? I'm not sure where they all are, but here is the one from last week:

The saga:

At the DNC a skeletal being raises its claw and says "Speak."
"Oh Skeletor..."
"I'm Tom Perez. Skeletor was in children's show."
"But you look just like..."
"Get to the point before I have your puny body blasted to atoms like I did with He-Man!"
"Yes, Oh Skel - Mr. Perez. Trump is going over seas on foreign visits. He has been greeted with non-stop disdain and a whiny middle school bitch fest from the media domestically. But a president's great strength is foreign policy. We fear that Trump may appear Presidential and Normal overseas and people may see this and wonder if we aren't the ones that have lost our minds and not him. What are you doing?"
Perez looks up from the brain he has been tinkering on. "Hmm? Just giving Nancy Pelosi a tune up. I think her timing belt is about to go, though. You were saying?"
"Overseas. During Trump's visits. We need to deploy the same tactics we have done here, see to it that Trump appears as reviled by everyone as he is by us. Then when he is seen as a failure everywhere we will put on Operation Impeachment Pie and elevate Hillary Clinton to the Imperial Throne - I mean, presidency."
Fingers deep into the cerebral cortex Perez nods and says 'Good idea; contact the Democrats Who Left America Because They Hate It and have them get bids on riotous mobs; remember to get receipts we have to watch the pennies these days - between Hillary's bar tab and Nancy's drinks cart it's a wonder we can keep the lights on."

**********

At the White House Trump prepares for overseas travel.
"Let's see - shave kit, extra underwear, clean shirts, extra long ties, mace, .45 with extra magazines, phrasebook on "How To Speak Foreign", weasel gel in gold - yep, got everything."
A man blunders into the room, his fez askew. He blinks behind thick glasses. "Meester Tromp?"
"Ah Morocco Mole! How's my best spy at the DNC?"
"I am fine. Secret Squirrel sent me to tell you the DNC plans protests while you are overseas to make you look like you are hated world wide causing you to be impeached into a pie."
"A pie?"
"They aren't very clever over there."
"Well, no. Thanks for the warning. I'll give Erdogan a call and borrow a couple of curb stomping Turks, and maybe see if Vlad can spare a squadron of Cossacks. What do you think little buddy?"
The Golden Scalp Weasel straightens its Hawaiian shirt, adjusts its Ray-Bans and gives a thumbs up.

I also call bullshit that prices will go up in any noticeable way. Think about what an extra $5 an hour across, say, 10 people (so $50 an hour) actually adds in cost when you divide that by thousands of heads of lettuce or whatever. Pennies.

If they're really worried about the cost of produce at my local store, lower the diesel tax, sales tax (where applicable) and tolls for trucks. That'll have more of an impact.

It's an incentive problems.

The incentives to not work are too high, and the incentives TO work are too low.

The government can easily fix #1 by making it less desirable to not work.

And the market will fix #2 by forcing employers to find ways to incentivize people to work. That could mean better hours, more consistent work, higher wages... who knows? The market can and will fix it.

1. department of agriculture sets farm prices.

2. the Obama administration would shut down any business if illegals were not hired.

RWR was probably the last administration before DJT that didn't encourage or require illegals to be hired. There is a law that pays illegals social security if they leave the US when they retire. The reality is that illegals don't have to leave the US to collect because the law isn't being enforced.

The issue is allowing people who (nominally) believe in socialism to be in charge. What socialist really believe is that Special socialist know best and wealth creators are their inferiors. Inferiors who have to be shamed and ordered around and the wealth taken for the Special socialist to consume and distribute. Calling Special socialist socialist is racist.

Drug tests are another ridiculous barrier to entry in the labor market. Do you know who doesn't get drug tested? illegal immigrants.

And yet the government has all kinds of incentives for companies to drug test, a lot of companies do it on their own, and they end up excluding a kid who smoked pot 3 weekends before his job interview and wasn't smart enough to buy detox or fake piss from the workplace.

Does a resort really care if their waiters smoke pot on the weekends? No, why should they?

But the 100 ounce bottle sure did look bigger to the naked eye.

And yet the government has all kinds of incentives for companies to drug test, a lot of companies do it on their own, and they end up excluding a kid who smoked pot 3 weekends before his job interview and wasn't smart enough to buy detox or fake piss from the workplace.

The incentives to not work are too high, and the incentives TO work are too low.

358 I dunno about row crops, but meat producers do not set the price for what they produce and I suspect it's the same with farmers. So a farmer can't just charge more for lettuce when his labor or other costs increase.

Ok so the way adam smith's pimp hand does this in a market economy, either the price will rise across the board for that product or the farmer and rancher will no longer produce it and an import may be the alternative. The farmer or rancher will then move to a more economically viable crop.

however, if it becomes scarce prices will rise and it will be grown locally again.

Yes, because they've convinced kids that they MUST fill up their CV with all sorts of unpaid internships and other good works/activism in order to get into a good college. Flipping burgers, cleaning rooms, etc. doesn't count.

This, along with the open borders and lavish welfare benefits, has ensured that we "need" all of those uneducated illegals to do these entry-level jobs.
What they always fail to acknowledge is that you chance one piece of this system - such as take away the illegal immigrant employee pool - and other things will change, too.Fore example, IIRC Tyson chicken was busted with an ICE raid and they had many citizen applicants willing to fill in those vacated positions.

402 Last, weed is not the main problem. I'd say meth is the big problem, followed by heroin.
Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at May 25, 2017 01:55 PM (SRKgf)

Then why test for weed? The overwhelming majority (I think I read 95%+ recently but I can't find the link) of pre-employment drug screening failures are for marijuana.

Most likely because drug addicts a) know how to fool the tests, it's pretty easy. and b) know that meth, coke, opiates, etc only stay in your system for 24-48 hours and that c) if you have a prescription for any drug in any of those classes, you can fail for the drug and it's not a problem.

For example, if you have an adderrall script, you'll fail for meth. The tests can't differentiate the amphetamines from each other, so as long as you can show a doctors note, you can fail for amphetamines and still get the job.

403 I figure that knocking off the bong hits for a month or so prior to interviewing is one of those things employers may expect as a simple diligence filter. Akin to showing up on time to the interview, and being neatly groomed. If people can't even get it together to do those basic things, well...

As for hiring stoners, there was a piece about the economic boom in CO after the legalization of weed, which did quote a guy who ran an ordinary non-marijuana business in the state, and who was despairing over what legal weed had done to his workforce. Absenteeism, workers' comp claims, and employee theft way up. Quality control and productivity in the toilet.

405 It's not that there's no room for imported labor. LEGAL, regulated, normal imported labor. Mostly seasonal, and short-term. It exists already, and it existed in the past.

There probably IS room for that. But it has to be done up-front, explicitly, with REAL economic impact analysis and real requirements to first find US labor.

Costs will, should, rise. But the hidden costs ("externalities" - in this case a legit use of the concept that otherwise has been hijacked to lend faux legitimacy to statist/authoritarian efforts to run everyone's lives) will be eliminated.

There is no serious, remotely persuasive argument for illegal labor if the alternative of regulated contract imported labor and H1Bs run by the actual requirements of the law were in existence. Ag or other sectors who would "suffer" are no different than an energy company that was allowed to skirt all the environmental regulations and thereby have lower costs, then was forced to comply. No violin music, sorry.

But there are some pretty godawful mines in the road ahead that need to be cleared, yet.

Same problem with urine or blood tests. Hard drugs are out of your system very quickly and usually don't show up in the hair of a casual user.

Marijuana will.

And of course, hair tests are the most cheatable of any drug tests -- you can buy shampoo online that fucks with the markers in the tests so you come back clean even if you're a heroin addict who is high on opiates at the time of the test.

Or, like most drug addicts, you probably have a script for your drug class of choice anyways, which means that you don't care if you fail for opiates because you have a script for opiates from a doctor.

473 Here is the crux of that 4th Circuit descision...

"The question for this Court, distilled to its essential form, is whether the Constitution, as the Supreme Court declared in ... remains "a law for rulers and people, equally in war and in peace." And if so, whether it protects Plaintiffs' right to challenge an Executive Order that in text speaks with vague words of national security, but in context drips with religious intolerance, animus, and discrimination. Surely the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment yet stands as an untiring sentinel for the protection of one of our most cherished founding principles that government shall not establish any religious orthodoxy, or favor or disfavor one religion over another. Congress granted the President broad power to deny entry to aliens, but that power is not absolute. It cannot go unchecked when, as here, the President wields it through an executive edict that stands to cause irreparable harm to individuals across this nation. Therefore, for the reasons that follow, we affirm in substantial part the district court's issuance of a nationwide preliminary injunction as to Section 2c of the challenged Executive Order."

The family believe the hacker was trying to plant evidence to back up his claim that Rich was the source of the DNC hack

The Rich family have dismissed the claim as a malicious conspiracy theory

Well, I'm sorry you have meth users in your family, but there is zero causation and almost zero correlation between meth use and marijuana use.

Put another way, 99% of marijuana users have never used meth.

Put another other way, 99% of meth users have also used caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, or other drugs.

It's like saying "100% of people convicted of a DUI have driven a car in their lives, so driving cars leads to DUIs."

Look at it from an employers perspective:

1) Employee does drugs on his off hours. Fine. You usually end up firing him for not showing to work on time or at all. Trust me, this is the case for around 90% of almost all firings- attendance. This is all well and good you are not firing him based on the drugs, but rather his actions.

2) The other hand is this: the guy is driving a forklift and hurts someone. Now any sort of accident on the job triggers an automatic drug test at anywhere I have ever worked. However, if the guy or gal hurts someone while under the influence, and there is no drug policy with testing in place, the employer is now liable for part of the damages to the person who was hurt- negligence.

3) Even if someone is under the influence and we send him home, if he gets in an accident on the way home, we can be sued for negligence if we do not put him in a cab or a cop car.

4) Drug use has a correlation to problems on the job, not just the ones I mentioned above. Why should a company take on an employee who might cause them liabilities and make them waste the time, effort and money of training, if they are just going to have to fire him or her later?

I am not saying that this is right, I am saying it is completely understandable that companies try to protect themselves, completely outside the war on drugs- because honestly, most companies don't give a crap- they just want to make money or at worst, not lose massive amounts of it.

The statutory language is clear. Congress, idiotically, gives the President full and unlimited power in this area. There's no tea leaf reading and no oh oh oh but other people will be haarrrmmmeeedd. Funny, the people who may possibly get nail bombed at a pop concert won't get to sue the ever loving motherfuck out of the judges who issued this ruling. That irreparable harm doesn't count.

This is why all y'all what to put me up against a wall and go shooty (well, one of the many reasons). Because it takes lawyers to dork the statute up the squeakhole like that.

Inevitable consequence of a health care "system" where costs are absolutely out of control. Employers want you safely out the door before the age at which those heart bypasses, knee and hip jobs, and costly cancer drugs start showing up.

Costs were out of control before Obamacare. Obamacare itself then did absolutely nothing to reduce costs -- merely shuffled the deck and redistributed costs around to different payors. And now the Beltway GOP's Obamacare Lite similarly does nothing about costs.

What ludicrous, lawless nonsense. As usual, "courts" just making shit up.

It's not the court's role, when reviewing a clearly lawful executive order, to insert their own baseless delusions and bigotries and judgements about "context" or motive. Period.

By NOT repudiating this sophomoric crap, and not forcing SCOTUS to either embrace the final dissolution of the constitutional system (or more likely, back down by nuking the lower courts), Trump's administration has, in effect, deepened and worsened the problem.

It's similar to the situation with key legislative priorities. Either you force a time of decision, reintroduce politics to politics (decisions, consequences, accountability), or the slide continues - and accelerates.

There were no errors or "uncrossed t's" in the EO. Maybe some more shut-up, and fewer tantrums, from those who don't bother to understand the substance of issues, is what's called for here.

They screwed up the first one, which is why they needed the second. That screw up and the statements from the campaign is what led to this.

Trump's amateurishness and glibness aided and abetted those who want to destroy all immigration controls.

The second EO as written seems perfectly Constitutional. But that doesn't mean that the courts will find it to be Constitutional, or lay down precedent like they just did.

It doesn't matter how Constitutional it is... you do not go out of your way to give the other side a chance to shut down not only this, but by precedence all future similar actions. To ignore that is the height of stupidity.

529 What did they screw up in the first executive order? What, precisely, was unconstitutional and not legal in that order?

530 323 The problem is that it's crappy work, sometimes intermittent,
========
That's exactly it: That farmer says he's offering $22/hr.

Great.

But, it's for what, one or two months? So, $4k to $8k.

Then what?

Then there is this show you might have heard of, Deadliest Catch.
And another, Gold Rush.

These guys work like 5 months a year and somehow have a full year's wages.
And magically, the owners don't really have labor shortages.
And they're still in business.
Employing Americans, too.

Odd.

And the sale of that "season" of work yields enough revenue to pay those wages and keep the business a going concern, too.

Does a strawberry field generate the same revenue?

The harvest times are staggered in places like CA. And there are several growing seasons per year.

Grain harvesters for hire migrate with the work, too. Some will buy a harvester in the mid summer and work their way south to north as crops ripen, then sell the machine in the fall.

Sometimes, you need to go to where the work is. My granddad, during the depression, loaded up wife and 4 kids in a trailer, then hit the road. Carpentry, electrical, and plumbing.
