I don't see any mischief in those eyes.

Been fans of Ace for years, love the pet thread, thought we'd send some pics in.
This is Magnum (the smaller one with the insanely cute, smug smile) and Samson. Pure bred Rough Collies.
We've always rescued animals (dozens over the years) but we had a rescue collie (Rowan) for many years and upon his passing decided that the breed was just perfect for us, so we went in search of another rescue. When we couldn't find one, we decided to go to one of the best collie breeders in the U.S. (Holmhaven) and get one - Magnum came to us at 9 weeks of age, and Samson followed about 6 months later - he was a return due to the owners having financial and health issues. They are actually cousins, and are best friends. What an incredible breed. -Eric

Mina, standing, and Geddy, sitting. Rescued Geddy as a puppy from a meth head needing money. Mina just wants to be touched. They love swimming in the irrigation canal, hunting mice and gophers on our acreage and love being bed hogs in the morning. S.Lynn

Hi, this is my dog named Rowan. Australian Cattle Dog with a lot of energy. He's surveying the back yard two years ago in the winter. I'm a lurker who spends most of my time at The Hostages where I typically post on Thursdays.

Last but not least are these cute cats.

Say Hello to Tammy and Tig. Tammy showed up on our doorstep quite thoroughly pregnant; Tig is the only survivor of his litter. When he was born we put a berm of towels up around their nesting place to keep the kittens from crawling out of their nest. First day he was born tig crawled straight to the berm and up on top and took station on guard. Figgered he had some Tig in him. He'g going on 7 weeks now, over 27 ounces, will fight anything, and REALLY lets you know his opinion of veterinarian anal probes. -richard mcenroe

10 Once again the Moronimals prove we do *so* have high standards. At least for our pets. What an adorable bunch of troublemakers! And that military dog totally is thinking "I pulled off the fake limp AGAIN! Yay me!"

Had a baby crow learning to fly a few days ago. Flopped on the ground and mom and dad were NOT pleased when I came too near Junior (ignorance is no excuse). I claim them as pets since they have their nest in my yard. Junior is doing much better with the whole flying thing now and is now working on keeping all his feathers tucked. (We still have a few baby feathers that will not lie smooth--so adorable!)

Looks entirely monotone and glossy in the wrong places. Are NatG units still using old non-flattops from the 80s? The charging handle looks curved.

17 Moroni also Geddy reminds me of a cat I met a while back. The boarding kennel we use for our pets has several cats that "work" there : begging for pettings from the customers and walking on the keyboard when the human staff are trying to ring up the bill.

The new one's name was Crystal--not a weird name but the staffer went on to explain that she was a rescue because her owners had been arrested for making meth. She's a nice kitty.

20 Merovign, the 'prop' M-16s I have seen usually have a magazine molded into the magazine well. This one does not.

Charging handle is being seen from above and at an angle so not only seeing the top but the thickness of it, so that might account for the 'curve' you mention.

I would be very surprised if every M-16 in the US military has been changed over to the flat-top version. Talk about expense so older but still capable models will linger in inventory.

As I say it may be the lighting, but it looks like it's all the same material. It's definitely a much older design.

The photo seems to be too popular to find the real story behind it, but there are hundreds of different versions at random blogs, forums, pinterest, etc.

I was just curious about the oddity and the original story behind the picture.

They are amazingly affectionate and easy to train. I had a male tri-color, Dunrobin of Kingswood "Robin." I got him when I was 19.

33 A while back, a bobtail longhair orange/white striped kitty appeared in our yard. My darling bride started feeding it, so it stuck around, imagine that.

Anyway, it got liquored up and loved on, or the feline equivalent, and, surprise, surprise, a litter of four kittens arrived.

The daddy must have been of a swarthy variety, for two of the brood are black striped. The remainder favor their mama.

Interestingly, one of each color pair are bobtails. Whodathunkit?

36 Again, an almost ridiculously good-looking buncha moranimals. You can see how hard they work for their kibble.

Son's puppy stayed at my house last weekend. She is really pretty good for 4 mos and does try to obey. My old dog keeps her in line if her puppyness gets ahead of her. Cat finally confronted the puppy and could not understand why she wasn't cowering and crying like the toddler when the cat has had enough. I think mine forgot the two kittens who stayed weekends when son was busy and couldn't leave them alone yet. Puppies and kittens are cute and all, but the sigh of relief when they go back to their own home is pretty heartfelt.

37 in other news, we adopted a new kitteh last week.

we were at the feed store for cat litter and such, and there was a new flyer for "Royce" who's person had gotten very ill, and wouldn't be coming home to care for him.

the location was right around the corner, so we went over, decided he seemed like a good fit, and brought him home.

he wasn't happy with the trip. and spent the first day or two under the bed during the day, but would come out late at night.

then he started coming out when Resident Evil came home from w*rk.

as of yesterday, he's out and about, just like all the other house lions.

gonna be awhile though, before we see how he likes his new yard.

he's a DSH tabby, very vocal, and is already taking no shit from the other boys. he even put Mijo in check, which serves the pushy little shit right.

53 Our rough collies (one a backyard breeder dog, the other a Gambit collie) would lay in the doorways when the weather was good and the doors were open. If a child, or even me, went outside, one would follow and the other would stay inside to guard they family. If I was working outside for a long time, the outside collie might eventually go back inside, but the other would come out to watch. Always. Best dogs ever.

57 I still have toddler coming over at least one day a week, even though I am supposed to get a vacation while kidlet#2 is on maternity leave. The two old farts (dog and cat) really went into a decline when they didn't have the kid for a couple weeks. They both seem to remember what a baby is and I was laughing when they laid down on separate sides of the car seat with noses touching the new baby's leg. It will be a zoo when I have both grandkids, but my trusty assistants will be there to nag me if the baby snuffles or fills her pants.

Congratulations on your new family member. That was nice of you to adopt the cat from a person who was sick. When we got our ferall rescue Tabby from a from a friend the cat got out of the room we had her in and retreated to a crawlspace in what we call our box room. She was in there for two days, I got worried but now (2 years later( she's a happy inside cat looking out the windows and occasionally jumping up up and hanging off the front door window l as if it's bars in a prison and she had rather high decibel level purr.

Speaking of ticks, vet gave me a prescription for Bravecto for Conor and so far it seems to be working. It is not a tick repellent, but ticks that bite supposedly wither and die within 6-12 hours or so. The dose lasts for 12 weeks. Conor seems no worse for wear after most of a week and I haven't seen a new tick yet, and the old ones dropped off, but it is still early in the tick season, and the monsoons here have been conducive to walks.

I don't like meds like this but Conor was plagued with ticks before and was really upset when I tried to remove ticks, so I decided to try this.

64 When I was a youngster my best friend's family had a collie. I could never figure out why she always smelled so much better than the dogs we had on our farm. Eventually it dawned on me that the collie actually got regular baths instead of just swimming in the creek.

She called me up and said, "Daddy, I need you to bring Clearwater down." He'd never seen a sheep in his life, but the next morning she took him with her. The sheep ran to the bottom 40. Megs took the collie down, and ran a sweep with him to herd the sheep to the barn. The next morning, "She said to him, "Go get the." Dog joyfully sweeps into the field, and drives the sheep to the barn. The next morning, the sheep saw the collie coming and ran to the barn. Both the collie and the sheep knew their job. Later Megs had me bring Tamarack, the other collie, and did the same thing with her. Collies are the BEST. DOGS. EVER.

72 A few weeks ago I mentioned we were considering adopting a kitten through a rescue organization. Went through the paperwork and home visit. Precious little guy.

Upon giving ourselves the weekend to consider, we chose to allow our soon-to-be sixteen y.o. kitty to live out however much time she has left in peace.

She seems to have recovered fully from Spanky's death, and is doing really well on her hyperthyroid meds, putting on weight, and occasionally going on a running sprint through the house, nearly bouncing off the walls.

When she passes (which vet said could be a few more years), we'll adopt two (perhaps bonded) kitties.

She greets me at the door every night, curls up with me to sleep, and is only interested in the keyboard when I'm using it. She's my boon companion. 80 Our Sandy sleeps pressed up against my side every night. She will actually go and meow and "nag" my husband to get him to come to bed, and then she gets on his chest to allow him to "worship" her. She's been doing this since she was teeny tiny. Oh, and when she's on his chest, she tucks her right paw under her chest and grabs his finger or thumb with her left paw and squeezes it like a baby does.

81 MY big boy Smokey brought me a present yesterday morning. A dead possum. I think he felt bad for it because he kept looking at it and looking at me. "Make it move!" My husband disposed of it. He usually brings in live things that he drops on the kitchen floor and then we spent hours looking for them all over the house. Our female just kills the creatures and leaves them where they lay. Neither. In the process of writing (sadly kind of out of order) I have simply found a lot of things I can substantially improve.

Rather do it now than wait through half a dozen rejection slips 'cause they saw the same things. This is taking too long, but that would take a lot longer.

I may be crawling across the finish line, but I intend to finish.

Ginny has several jobs. Her self assigned ones are to make sure that the mailman, ups driver, and fedex guys hear her viciousness (she sounds like a squeak toy) and retreat from the house after they've approached. So far she's been highly successful.

He second self assigned job is to make sure no one climbs the 8 foot fence at the far back of the yard. Most times people walk completely down its length before realizing that she's protecting the place. She must continually run the entire distance or they might double back. This task has given her "impressive musculature" according to the vet. Might want to copy it for GAINZZ.

Another is to answer the house phone. When it rings she rushes to it. Hasn't figured out how to do the rest, but she's go the first part down.

Also acts as greeter, food sweeper, cooking pan/pot degreaser.

Weirdly, she's the only dog I've ever had that "hugs" like a person.

Assigned tasks are simpilier, companion, alerter, vermin killer and warmth provider.

Our neighbors came over and asked us what to about this little snake on their porch they were scared of. It was only a foot long and as thick as a cigarette. Cute lil' thing. It was tan and maybe a little darker on top. I don't know if it was a baby or an adult of a small species.

I had never heard of any poisonous snakes around here, and also I thought that poisonous snakes had bold, colorful markings. I later learned that last part isn't true.

But, not knowing that at the time, I gently picked it up behind its head and released it outside.

169 I had never heard of any poisonous snakes around here, and also I thought that poisonous snakes had bold, colorful markings. I later learned that last part isn't true.

Coral snakes, which are extremely venomous, are bright colored, but they resemble some other species of harmless snakes. If the red bands touch the yellow bands, it's a coral snake so do not mess with it.

I worked at a large aquarium that was all new construction on newly cleared land, so we got interesting visitors at first. One time we were eating in the staff cafeteria when a cook came out from the kitchen with a dried up dead snake on his broom. We started reciting the old rhyme "red on yellow, kill a fellow..." Yep, that's a coral snake dude.
In our employee kitchen.

The pooches sure demonstrate the variety of canines. They may all be the same species, but hardly the same family - appearances and behaviors.

Just one example: dogs who love the water v dogs like our guy who detests it.

Those collies are just beautiful (or handsome, as per zheir gender preferences). Excellent critters - for someone else. We wouldn't want a purebred, really - give me a good mutt any day - nor a long-hair out here in rural Okla.

We had a found-us Australian Shepherd with a thick, tight coat, perfect for Alaska, not so much Oklahoma. (Miss ya, Foggy Doggie!) Had to keep him clipped for at least 3/4 of the year. Since he was blind in one eye and didn't like to be approached on that side, shaving him could be a real task, and might occasionally involve sedation.

Our current German Shepherd-whatever mix (who also found us) is a short-hair, utterly mellow temperament, relatively easy to care for; perfect for us. We'd be mighty lucky to get another pooch as smart and devoted as our old guy.

I had the same reaction you did. I'm glad you posted your comment. I'm feeling low today because it's the anniversary of my dad's death (heart attack; he was much too young for that, and I was only 15 when he died). He was a WWII vet, so the photo of the soldier at the top of the pet thread was all I needed . . . to make my eyesight blurry again. To get back to the video-- the last thing I needed was a putdown of the faith that sustains me. So thank you again.

177 SarahW, So sorry for your loss. Most of us here have been through it. Give yourself a little time to mourn (and that what it is) but try not to dwell on the sorrow too long. Remember the moments that made your cat special and take joy in them. Yeah, there will be moments when the tears come again. That's OK.

181 Ben, water moccasins don't gather into balls, but harmless water snakes do. Several species of harmless water snake look just like water moccasins. We have scads of them on my granny's place and for awhile I was scared to swim too until I finally learned the difference.

Several days ago, I was talking with the neighbor at the shed. We share a large yard. His daughter and granddaughter were zipping around the acreage on their zero-turns while he criticized their technique. Heh.

Granddaughter zips up, hops off the mower, goes to the truck, and comes back with a nice little pistol, zips away again.

As she goes off, the neighbor brags how all his kids and grandkids have their licenses.

Thanks to my extensive knowledge of hoplophilia, derived almost entirely from reading this blog, I said to him, "and I bet they all keep up on their practice, too."

He assured me, yes, indeed.

Then six shots rang out from north of our house. When I got over there, the ladies had a rake, and were holding up a snake, with three gaping holes, still hissing and trying to strike. The grand-daughter was pretty proud that she'd hit him three out of six, and it was amazing he was still wiggling with those holes blown in him. He wouldn't last long.

First time we've ever found a water moccasin that close to the house. All the rain temporarily made EPA-controllable wetlands out of the place, so I hope this will remain a rare, if not unique, instance.

Okay, not a pet. Um... Um... our cats were inside (as usual during mowing) so none of them were harmed.

A shotgun on the other hand....I remember my mom using hers to blow the head off a rattler, which still kept striking for awhile even without its head. Good times.

Milady and I, and Dog, spent Thursday night down at my Mom's, and Daughter took care of the felines.

Next morning, she texted me: "Saw all kittehs but Spark.

He may be sleeping off his mouse from last night!"

She reported that the previous night Spark had been observed having much sport with the carcass.

As usual, it was Spark's sister Spirit who had caught it. #Guycat Privilege

Spirit ditched the kill to go hit some fresh kibble Daughter brought out. Go figure.

Daughter wondered if kibble was some kind of kitteh crack. (I think Spirit is just watching her svelte summer weight.)

#Rural Life

Daughter hung out awhile on the porch, and chased off (sort of) a sneaky raccoon raiding the kibble.

188 The dog I grew up with became very lethargic one day and laid in the garage on the cool concrete. We took him to the vet who said he had been bitten by a poisonous snake but had somehow survived. The experience turn him into a snake hating machine. Our property had several nests of copperheads as it turned out and we spent the next year or so tracking them down and destroying them.

Our dog, which we had named Rover, for laughs, was like a mongoose with a cobra after his snake bite recovery and I watched him many a time bobbing and weaving as the snake struck at thin air. When the time was right, Rover would dart in and grab the snake behind its head and shake it like a bullwhip until he had broken its spine. While all this was happening one of us was there with an axe, rake, or brush-hook trying to get a shot in at the snake, because we didn't want Rover to get bitten again. Decades later, I still miss that dog.

You don't want to mess with poisonous snakes. Daughter in law got bitten by a copperhead while walking their dog. Son took her to ER as soon as he could, but years later she still suffers from nerve damage in that leg!
