Today in the Social Justice War on Civilization

A couple of white girls became fascinated by tortillas during a trip to Mexico. They researched the techniques of making them, including "picking the brain" of every "tortilla lady." They also admitted to occasionally looking into kitchen windows to see techniques.

Their dream was to open a burrito food truck.

That dream ended one day after the Social Justice Warriors screamed they were "culturally appropriating" the Mexican heritage.

And at the University of Michigan, once believed to be a real school, the meltiest little snowflake in the upper northwest has decided that wood paneling is sexist and racist.

Anna Wibbelman, former president of Building a Better Michigan, an organization that voices student concerns about university development, stated at a student government meeting in late March that "minority students felt marginalized by quiet, imposing masculine paneling" found throughout the 100-year-old building, the meeting’s minutes state.

The little melty snowflake just said something pretty racist -- minority students don't like "quiet" settings.

But I'm sure Anna Wibbleman knows many minorities through their brief guest appearances on Girls.

Another snowflake attempted to defend her, but also stating that minorities are loud and feel oppressed by quiet rooms.

Current president of Building a Better Michigan, Jazz Teste, stated that Wibbelman’s comment wasn’t necessarily about the wood paneling.

“I believe it was an off-hand comment about how many students felt marginalized by the quiet nature of the building when they entered,” she told The College Fix via email.

Wibbelman could not be contacted for further detail despite repeated requests.

If anyone who isn't a snowflake SJW claimed that minorities liked being loud, do you think they'd get away with it, with no one demanding a Viral Firing for such a problematic assertion?

But obvious, 1950s era stereotypes and racism are permitted to the SJWs. Just so long as they couch it in the right lingo.

Oh, here's the good news: Mizzou, site of the most frenetic Social Justice Warrior conniptions then seen in 2015, is still paying the price for now being regarded as a joke: It will welcome its smallest entering freshman class in almost 20 years.

No one's happy about any deaths in Manchester. This is too ironic not to notice, however:

I don't know where people get this idea that "terrorists only kill the bad people." But that seems to be the unstated premise at work.

Wrong.

I first heard it rear its ugly head 2 or 3 years ago, and now snowflakes are complaining about it left and right. When I was a kid we were taught to celebrate other cultures - hell, the girl scouts had a "world day" every year where each troop had a table with food, decorations and costumes a different country. 24 Hey YOU STUPID LEFTIST FUCKWITS:

"Burritos" as we know them in the US were invented IN SAN FRANCISCO'S MISSION DISTRICT IN THE 1950s, not in Mexico. The original-original true Mexican "burrito" in traditional cuisine is about the size of a taquito -- i.e. about 1/20th the size of a contemporary burrito -- and was considered a small appetizer, not a meal.

The whole concept of a big, stuffed-to-the-gills meal-size burrito is A GRINGO INVENTION.

So every Mexican who serves up a big burrito these days IS APPROPRIATING WHITE CULTURE!

Stick that in your ignorant bean-hole and choke on it.

My iPhone is obviously listening to me even when it is turned off, as long as I am near. It picks up keywords and these are marketed to spammers and, as you will see from reading the article linked in my nic, even Amazon.

It is extremely unsettling to imagine the depth of penetration of our privacy that has taken place, but I am convinced it is true. Read the blog post I have linked, and try it yourself. Any voice activated phone, computer, or control... must by definition be constantly listening so it can know to turn itself on...

Now, phones and such do NOT have the processing power to actually support voice recognition systems, and so send the voice data back to the parent company... where by signing the license agreement to use said product, they OWN that data... and can sell it to ad companies.

Put those things together, and you are only TRUSTING that it is only sending data once you tell it to turn on.... and not all the time...

There is a reason why there is no microphone, nor camera, hooked up to my computer.... and no voice software enabled on my computer or phone...

Father has his head down, staring at the sidewalk, grimly putting one foot in front of the other, trying to ignore the chaos around him, trying to carry on as the English do in time of trouble, as they have been told to do by their government.

His daughter, wrapped in a blanket, walking at her father's side, is alert, eyes open, head up, looking around, aware of everything going on around her, aware of everyone, including the photographer, and probably alert to the next likely suspect she might encounter in her life.

I am convinced, and have evidence to prove it, that we are being
listened to not only by the NSA and Allah-knows who else, but by Apple,
Google and whoever else.

My iPhone is obviously listening to me even when it is turned off,
as long as I am near. It picks up keywords and these are marketed to
spammers and, as you will see from reading the article linked in my nic,
even Amazon.

It is extremely unsettling to imagine the depth of penetration of
our privacy that has taken place, but I am convinced it is true. Read
the blog post I have linked, and try it yourself. It's kind of fun to
talk about some fictitious thing in the presence of your smart phone,
only to see spam offers arriving to sell you the very thing you talked
about.

We are so-o-o far down the rabbit hole that there is not even a hint of light down here.

Way too many times we have gotten in the car and said let's go home and suddenly her iphone has the GPS app loaded with directions and the estimated time to get home already loaded on it.

That has happened three times in the last four months now.

There is nothing in the world that isn't "appropriated" from another (usually long gone, and probably unknown) culture.

"appropriation" is why humans have developed societies and we have the world around us, and why apes, who are capable of only the most minimal appropriation, live in zoos.

But, whatever. Fine, only mexicans can eat burritos. I'll agree to that if only Irish can drink Guinness and only Americans can use electricity or the internet.

The story my brother tells about the development of rap was that it really came out of Jamaica. The only radio stations they could get were some southern stations from the US and they heard the southern DJs yapping over the records. They mistakenly thought that that was something normal so they started doing it intentionally and then rap developed from it.

I have no idea how true that is but my brother swears it's what happened.

Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair

?????

Rap developed from "Toasting," which what Jamaican DJs did with portable DJ trucks driven to small towns in the Jamaican backwoods, starting in the mid-late '60s. The poor folks didn't have radios, and the mountains prevented good reception anyway, so their only access to music was when the DJ truck came to town, so everyone would gather around for a big party. Each DJ would try to outdo his rivals with ever-escalating "introductions" to the rock-steady and early-reggae songs. It eventually got to the point, by around 1969, that they would talk over the entire song, from beginning to end, often with outlandish boasts. Oddly, this became popular with the crowds, who demanded more of it. So the record companies began ca. 1969 to make all the flipsides of all the single be "versions" of the hit on the A-side -- basically a karaoke version of the song, with the lyrics dropped out, and mostly just bass and drums audible -- to facilitate the "toaster" being able to "toast" (talk) over the song without having to compete with the actual vocals.

By '72, the toasters themselves would make records of themselves talking over the "versions" - - hence began the "toasting" style of reggae.

Around that time was a big Jamaican influx to New York. They brought the style with them. It began to be copied by the local African-Americans. By '78, "rap" (as it began to be called in the US) was a distinct style.

All of this is pretty solidly documented.

It has nothing to do with Blondie or Leon Russell.

Shit ... the word for song in Hebrew is "shir" ... which is "poem", too. Talking in a song has been around longer than the English language, itself. A lot longer.

The difference with rap, of course, is not just the talking but that the voice is used as a percussion instrument. Of course, the influence of black culture on pop music has been to turn everything into a percussion instrument, which has reached its peak with rap. There's nothing left to convert to percussion, really.

The revamped bar sold only libations, but in the evening they partnered with a food truck, and bargoers could order from the bar and the food would be brought in from the truck. The bar avoided the extra overhead of providing food; the food truck had a reliable revenue stream for a few hours each day; and the customers did not have to leave their chairs to eat.

Pretty cool idea.

--There's another angle that popped into my head: Since so many locales (if not the establishments themselves) ban smoking indoors, the food truck parked outside allows the bargoers to eat while enjoying their smokes.

And the overhead is not just about the skill of the crew, but if a joint is not open for breakfast or lunch, then the potential payoff is so much slimmer vs. the investment and food costs.

424 Regarding paper, I have read that in the classical world, Egyptian papyrus was widely used in the Mediterranean area. As the Romans spread into Europe, they brought it with them and spread learning and literacy.

After the Roman Empire fell and the Muslims conquered the Mediterranean, Europe was cut off from sources of cheap papyrus and were forced to adopt much more expensive parchment.

Thus the collapse of literacy in Europe during the Dark Age can be laid squarely at the feet of the Muslims.

Conventional history teaches that the rediscovery of classical knowledge preserved by the Muslims brought Europe out of the Dark Age, but it sounds like they never would have had a Dark Age in the first place if it weren't for the Muslim conquests.

Meh. It's not a big deal, really. There are lots of other professions.

Do you know why Central Park West was built? because Jews weren't allowed in the restricted buildings on 5th avenue so they decided to build their own "5th avenue" on the other side of the park. And that was when most of the buildings on Central Part West went up.

Same thing for Goldman Sachs and the whole investment banking industry. Jews weren't allowed in JP Morgan (which was everything in banking) so they had to build their own industry.

In the end, the discrimination worked out well for everyone. New stuff got created and everyone benefited.

Anyway, what's with the hate on food trucks? They're not "trendy" if they've been around for decades, which they have in some areas, in various forms.

Don't know about social media, participate/exposed to zero social media, ever, but food trucks are sometimes great at craft breweries - if they're good, it's a fantastic combo. Trick of course is finding the good ones. And what's the difference between a mobile street taco or BBQ operation that unloads from the truck to cook, vs. keeping everything in the vehicle?

Anyway, food trucks, roadside stands, etc., same same. Memories of incredible grub from them, whether grilled corn in Brazil, kebab and fresh yogurt in Azerbaijan, or amazing tacos or tamales or other Mexican stuff in various places across SoCal and central CA.

From what I understand, "cultural appropriation" originally referred to the disrespectful, sacrilegious or out of context use of some practice or object that is particularly meaningful or sacred to the culture from which it was taken -- for example, the ceremonial headdresses and rituals of American Indian tribes. It also can refer to attempting to pass off half-assed imitations or mashups of another culture's art, food, clothing, etc. as "genuine". The problem is that the definition of cultural appropriation has expanded far beyond that into an all-purpose way for SJW's to beat white people over the head with their supposed "privilege".

496 Conventional history teaches that the rediscovery of classical knowledge
preserved by the Muslims brought Europe out of the Dark Age, but it
sounds like they never would have had a Dark Age in the first place if
it weren't for the Muslim conquests.

It wasn't just Muslim expansion. Once the Roman Empire started to fall apart, all the tribes that had been at the periphery started moving in. Huns, vikings, etc., combined with local warlords fighting over scraps, basically the whole of Europe collapsed into warfare and social upheaval for about 500 years.

I believe he pitched four no-hitters during his career (including the perfect game), which set a record that was broken by Nolan Ryan who ended up with seven (but no perfect game).

In 2010, the Phillies' Roy Halliday pitched a perfect game in the regular season, then pitched a no-hitter in the playoffs which was only marred by a walk in the fifth inning. In other words, he came within an eyelash of pitching two perfect games in one season. No other pitcher has had two in his entire career.

I got invited to play with a rake and scrape band, which was a blast. The rake and scrape is a screwdriver dragged along a saw blade for percussion. Think washboard. The music is American pop hits with a disco beat, no matter what kind of beat the tune was originally recorded with.

Protestants need to read more of the Church Fathers. Get a better sense of history. IMO, only."

The notion that Constantine "corrupted" the Church with wealth and political power may stem from a forged document known as the Donation of Constantine, in which the Emperor allegedly gave the Pope temporal authority over the entire Western Roman Empire.

The document's authenticity was questioned since at least the year 1000 and it was finally proven to be a forgery in the 14th century (by a Catholic priest, no less). Nevertheless, many people in the mid to late Middle Ages believed it to be genuine, including Dante Aligheri, who lamented its corrupting effect on the Church in his Divine Comedy ("Ah, Constantine, how much evil was born/not from your conversion, but from that donation/which the first wealthy Pope received from you!"

Again, realistically, ALL pitchers throw at batters occasionally, if for no other reason to move them off the plate and instill a little fear in them. It doesn't take much fear to impair someone's hitting; just having the thought in the back of his head that he might have to hit the dirt is enough.

Interesting. Her statement matches closely to the Gainforte campaign's statement:

Jacobs declined a request to lower his recorder, when asked, the statement alleges. "Greg then attempted to grab the phone that was pushed in his face. Jacobs grabbed Greg's wrist and spun away from Greg, pushing them both to the ground," says the campaign statement.

If the Guardian reporter really did "push Gianforte in the face" he could file assault charges against him...

The timing of this though might indicate an entirely new era of "october surprises" instead of holding onto old scandals (eg 2000), or making up fake ones (2004) it appears we might have the left moving on to attacking candidates on the night before the election to run to the public to claim they were the ones attacked.

Posted by: 18-1 at May 24, 2017 09:55 PM (aZq03)

685 Don't forget the mass human sacrifices by the Aztecs.

An early version of Aztecs (mexica) arrived in the valley of Mexico and asked the local king for his daughter, whom they promised to make a goddess.

So during the celebration dinner, the Mexica priest came out wearing the king's daughter's skin as a cape.

This did not make them popular with the girl's tribe.

It's amazing how few people grasp that, and think that the Spaniards conquered the Aztecs single-handedly. There were one million Aztecs, but 300 conquistadors (with muzzle-loading muskets). So the first charge of Aztecs would have resulted in 999,999, 700 Aztecs and 300 very soon to be dead Spaniards frantically trying to reload their muskets, but for the conquistadors Indian allies.

Let's face it, the Aztecs were Stone Age Nazis.

Little known fact in most quarters, not including the HQ.

I'm always amused by Mexicans in SoCal wistfully harking back to the Aztecs, apparently too stupid to figure out that statistically they were much more likely to have been victims of the Aztecs than members of them.

In this, they're of a piece with our Negro ex-President, who supported abortion, evidently little realizing that if it had been legal in 1961 he'd have ended up in a metal pail on a gynecologist's floor.
