Trump Ducks on Obamacare Cost Sharing; Won't Commit to Ending Them, Won't Commit to Keeping Them Forever, Either

As an end to the cost sharing arrangement could lead an even bigger exodus of insurers from their own business of selling insurance, which would of course be blamed on Trump, Trump is asking for another 90 days of cost sharing.

It seems like some bullets must be bitten.

He will be blamed regardless, because the insurance companies are anticipating his reckless acts, don't you see? Might as well just do it. OTOH, there may be some deep political chess happening which we don't know about. At this point, the only real choice is to assume he's doing all he can, or not.

30 Where is the money for cost-sharing coming from? Is it from the law's requirement that money-making plans prop-up money-losing plans?

Or is it coming from outside the system, making it just another means of hiding the true cost of these plans?

If it's the former, it's stupid, but the law hasn't yet been repealed so let it go. If it's the latter, let it burn. Then use executive orders to clear the decks.

55 This might be a smart "carrot and stick" strategy to get some sort of reform through by keeping the "hostage" alive.

Especially to get the Chamber of Commerce wing to support some reforms if Insurance companies want their dough. Big Business seems to be the only people the GOP listens to anymore.

But this is why the GOP is batshit crazy not to do something about ObamaCare, when it collapses it will be blamed on the GOP as stuff like this comes crashing down.

I agree in part, if Trump's proposed tax plan goes through, it would easily offset several times my rising health care premiums as a result of ObamaCare.

Why can't they change the tax code to let ALL out of pocket health care expenses be tax deductible? That's how my state does it and that's how it is for corporations (not LLC's) it would be incredibly popular and give small business owners immediate relief.

This is what the left, MFM, RINO's and the general public cannot come to terms with. For every winner there must be a loser, that loser is usually the taxpayer. If Trump can somehow pawn some of the pain on the insurers who rather gleefully bed with the devil - then great. Otherwise Repubs will get beaten over the head with this mess in 2018.

This will be a never ending circle jerk of a cluster fuck for years to come.

It's a terrible thing to be threatened. I understand the fear people feel when a nutjob sends a nasty tweet or makes an anonymous obscene phone call or--like that crazy lady a few weeks ago--follows them and tries to drive them off the road and what have you.

All that said, if some Republican politicians feel they are too intimidated to do their job then they need to resign so that someone who isn't too intimidated to do their job can do their job.

If the GOP repeals outright with nothing else... Dems/MSM will blame everything on GOP, resulting in Dem majorities that will impose national socialist healthcare.

If the GOP doesn't repeal at all... Dems/MSM will blame everything on GOP, resulting in Dem majorities that will impose national socialist healthcare.

If the GOP "repeals and replaces" or otherwise tries to fix it... Dems/MSM will blame everything on GOP, resulting in Dem majorities that will impose national socialist healthcare.

The only real way out of this is to sunset Obamacare over some lengthy period of time with grandfathering of plans, while concomitantly overhauling healthcare/medical regulations and laws to allow the maximum amount of freedom to innovate. At such time as Obamacare finally phases out, the possibility of minor and much less intrusive government intervention can be dangled to dismiss "wanting poor people to die" arguments.

This give the free market a chance to adapt and succeed without any plausible complaint that people are being thrown to eeevil corporate H8rz or something.

My employer's costs were indeed going up fast before. We got switched to a high-deductible plan to keep the premiums down, but they still went up..

As for the kids getting covered up to 26, it is certainly not for free. You still must pay a premium to keep that kid on your plan. And 26 yr olds cost almost nothing actuarially speaking. That policy change was probably a net gain for insurers, so it probably is not a cost being spread to others.

Might try something like TrueCar, not sure what they do regarding leasing but I thought it was a good way for someone to buy a car that doesn't want to play all the games.

But usually a car dealer's advertised lease rate is about as cheap as it gets in most circumstances is my underdstanding.

177 My employer's costs were indeed going up fast before.

You don't see it in the news but the change in the age adjusted rate accounts for 530,000 additional deaths since passage in 2010. That's more Americans than all American war casualties from WWII onward.

Ah, probably the infamous "American Community Survey".

Which not only asks a bunch of questions tailor-made for identity theft purposes, but also wants to know, e.g., how many toilets there are in your home. No kidding.

This is *way* outside the legitimate Constitutional ambit of Census work, but they do it anyway.

And, apparently, midlevel officials at Census have performance bonuses keyed to the percentage of ACS surveys returned complete, so they will latch on to you with barnacle tenacity once you've been "randomly" tagged for ACS "participation", including sending feds to your door to harass you in person and threaten you with harsh penalties.

No one so far as I know has ever actually been subjected to those penalties. I think that J. Random Resident just panics and knuckles under once the legal threats from Fedzilla begin.

I'd really like to see someone lawyer up with heavy duty counsel and take this into the courts and hopefully get rid of it for good.

Republicans are about to be voted out of office for not repealing Obamacare, not building a Wall, and not Reforming Taxes. WHY?

Democrats take over, and we get the British NHS Healthcare. We get VA Care for Everybody. Singlepayer Government Healthcare.

Posted by: rd at May 22, 2017 03:12 PM (XSEwK)

197 Insurance costs were going up fast before Obamacare as well.. Not sure
if it is even possible to calculate the O'Care effect on employer-based

Costs skyrocketing are no doubt pushed heavily by the fact that we've been inviting practically the entire third world here for decades and essentially given them free medical care - paid for by all the rest of us.

And it's primarily the Democrats pushing this ruin and then mirabile dictu, they are the ones to come up with the fix. To the problem they created.

Much like Dodd-Frank was the fix to the collapse that Dodd and Frank essentially engineered.

Anybody that keeps voting for Democrats should have his head examined. Or they're in on the scam that is the Democrat Party.

All car buying decisions are "stupid" you have just have to find the one that gives the right balance of your finances and how much headache you want.

The "smart" money is to buy used and make repairs as needed, but if you can afford it, I understand someone just leasing an inexpensive new car and redoing that every few years.

Sure. But you hit a certain age and say, 'WTF, I don't care, scrimped pennies all my life, I'd like a new car every couple years with the latest tech.' I'm willing to spend X dollars a month for an automobile. Then spend it.

Even worse, around here anyway, is that it is really hard to get cars to pass inspection. I'm driving an '04 at the moment that will not pass this August because of a rust hole in the rocker panel. Not that long ago I would have sold it for a few bucks to someone who needed a car which would run for a couple of years (tires have that much left in them), probably to get to and from work. Now it can't be sold, except for scrap. I lose out, poor people lose out, and car manufacturers make out. At this rate the market will never recover.

Posted by: CaliGirl at May 22, 2017 03:40 PM (Ri/rl)

Yes, that is what a large percentage of "pick up trucks" cost today.

Why? Because the overwhelming majority of pickups have crew cabs, all the heavy duty brakes, transmission coolers, radiators, heavy or extra batteries, etc. Then the insides are full of electronics, some because of consumer demand, some because of government regulations. Add in all the extra computer stuff on the engine, and additional safety featurers mandated such as side bags, air bags, etc. and voila, $60,000.

Try to find a single cab, long bed pick up new. I guarantee it will a 3/4 ton, white, and look ready for the utility company. And it will still cost $35,000-40,000 and will likely have to ordered as there won't be one on the lot.

Some car companies are really aggressive with leasing and some aren't.

My advice is shop around and not be married to a brand.

One car brand you may want to look at is Subaru. I didn't look at their lease rates, but they really seemed to offer a lot of car for the money compared to others I was looking at.

I changed my passengers headlamp on my Sierra. You have to take the breather box out and unhook the MAF sensor to do that.

I also replaced rotors and brakepads at the same time.

When I restarted the truck, the antilock brakes and the posi trac warning lights cam on. I really thought I had messed something up with the brakes.

After an afternoon of fiddling with the brake sensors, I finally realized I hadnt hooked up my MAF harness. Did that and the ABS and Positrac codes went away.

Why the fuck would antilock brakes be in any way dependent on the MAF sensor???

Because city kids that dont need them buy them. Why?? Because they are the last vehicles that have any "leg room".

In my entire life, I have never been contacted by any census taker, in person, via the mail or otherwise. I have a suspicion that the Federal government does not know I exist.

304 They make them that way so you have to take them to the dealer for repairs.

The three basic function of a car:
steeringaccelerationbrakingThey all use to be directly under a drivers control, but slowly they started to put a computer in between the driver and the car. That started a good 10-15 years ago. They knew driverless cars were coming way before they let us in on it.

305 Why?? Because they are the last vehicles that have any "leg room".

Yeah, I just paid a whole bunch of money fixing the AC my 2005 town car, because I don't want to have to deal with searching out a new vehicle that has real room inside.

306 Why the fuck would antilock brakes be in any way dependent on the MAF sensor???

Posted by: fixerupper at May 22, 2017 03:55 PM (8XRCm)

Possibly convenience. If they were "relatively" close to each other the sensors may have all shared the same electrical supply. There is probably a practical reason for it, but I don't have enough specific knowledge to say.

310 Wait. I thought Trump was going to get rid of the lines around the states (having crossed several state lines since January 20 I think he succeeded because I didn't see any lines around the states). Or I thought Trump, who IS a statist (and it cannot be denied that Trump is a statist) wants an absolute government monopoly in the medical world. He had to appease the Bernie supporters that he wanted so very badly. Or we were going to have such great medical care as long as he is President that no one in the country would die - of anything - as long as he was President. I'm so confused...

Also, would appreciate prayers for daughter, who has yet another surgery tomorrow. Poor kids is starting to look like frankenstein, with all the stitching and scars.

Hugs and smooches to you all.
