15 Weasel word
A weasel word (also, anonymous authority) is an informal term for words and phrases aimed at creating an impression that a specific and/or meaningful statement has been made, when only a vague or ambiguous claim has been communicated, enabling the specific meaning to be denied if the statement is challenged.

26 A measure to make former President Barack Obama's birthday an honorary state holiday now heads to the governor's desk after clearing the Illinois House unanimously Friday. The bill would make Aug. 4. Barack Obama Day in Illinois, but state government and businesses would remain open.

40 Mollie Hemingway at The Federalist -- Tips For Reading Washington Post Stories About Trump Based On Anonymous Leaks
1. In the immediate aftermath, news outlets will get it wrong.
2. Don’t trust anonymous sources. If democracy dies in darkness, anonymity is not exactly transparent or accountable. Unless someone is willing to to put his or her name with a leak, be on guard. Pay attention to how well the reporters characterize the motivations of the anonymous leaker. All leakers have motivation. Does the paper seem to have a grasp on how the motivation affects the veracity of the leak?
3. If someone is leaking national security information in order to support the claim of a national security violation, be on guard.
4. If someone is claiming a serious national security crisis but not willing to go public with the claim and resign in protest of same, be on guard.
5. Compare sources willing to put their name and reputation on the line.
6. Big anti-Trump news brings out the fakers.
7. Pay attention to the language that the media uses. Is a story about something unimportant being written in such a way as to make it seem more important?
8. Beware confirmation bias. Everyone has the tendency to interpret new evidence as confirmation of one’s existing beliefs or theories. Be on guard that you don’t accept critical or exonerating evidence to match your political preferences.
9. Pay attention to how quickly and fully editors and reporters correct stories based on false information from anonymous sources. If they don’t correct at all, it’s an indication of a lack of respect.

45 Bit of trivia for you all...

Up early this morning and I saw that video on the ONT about things going BOOM. Well boys and girls, there is "boom", and there is....WTF!

Many years ago when I was a young man (this was around 1980), there was a lot said in the media about the so-called "atomic veterans". These were the men who were present and worked at the various above ground nuclear tests that were done between the 1940s and 1960s. So happens back then I had a neighbor, an old guy named Al. I met Al because when I'd come home from wherever, ol' Al would always be standing out on his balcony smoking his roll your own cigarettes, which his wife refused to allow him to use indoors.

Al and I talked quite a bit, and come to find out, he'd been in the service, some kind of technical specialist, and was an atomic veteran. And oh yes, he'd been pulled in by the VA and other government agencies and checked over very thoroughly for any aftereffects of having been present at all these nuclear tests. And Al had been present for damn near all of them back in the day. (The only effect he seemed to have suffered, and I saw this myself, was the pigmentation on the underside of his arms was largely gone, due to radiation exposure. He said they'd worn protective suits, but when he'd walked over the ground where the bombs had been tested, holding some instrument before him, the radiation coming up from the ground did still affect his skin in that area. He apparently suffered no other ill effects from his work at the tests.)

Among the tests (or "shots" as they were called) Al had been present at was the first test of a thermonuclear (hydrogen) device, at a discreet distance, to be sure (Al was on a ship several miles away). Al said it was not a "bomb" at all, but a cube shaped metal building about two stories high, set on an island, with all the boom bits inside. (The later H-bomb tests he'd worked were after they figured out how to make the things small enough to be carried by a bomber or missile.)

Naturally, I ask him, "Al, what does a hydrogen bomb sound like when it goes off?" Al's reply was "Imagine, if you can, the sound of a thousand tornadoes coming at you at the same time. That's what a hydrogen bomb sounds like when it goes off"....

One of my theories, is the reason that islam and all its crazy beliefs can take hold, is that the heat in that part of the world bakes the brains of the kids, damaging their cognitive skills and they become fodder for the wicked belief system.

Evidence? Out of a population of 1.5 billion, 3 Nobel Prize awarded; one is a functional excommunicate albeit to a sect, another a Turk expat who moved here permanently, and the other seems a bit squishy but worked here also. None of the 3 seems to wear the faith on their sleeve.

68 This talk of dogs got me to remembering Ginger, our first golden retriever. She was a fine dog, and we loved her very much. Called her the "Queen of Lake Conroe", because she just loved going boat riding. All I had to do was say the word "boat" and she'd be at the door, wagging her tail (thump, thump, thump), ready to go.

Ginger loved children. One day my brother was visiting with his herd, all small kids at the time. They were out in the front yard playing with Ginger, climbing all over her, trying to ride her like a pony and all that, and Ginger is just standing there, with her happy face, tongue hanging out, tail wagging, like "I'm loving this". That's how she was with kids.

But something happened that day that surprised me, as I'd never seen Ginger like this before or since. I was outside too, mowing the grass outside the front fence line, and this man walks up. He was some kind of, I don't know, Jehovah's Witness, or something like that, and I stopped for a second to talk to him, damned if I know why.

The kids, curious as to what was going on, come up to the fence to listen in. And here comes Ginger. Ginger comes up, and stands in front of the kids. Not barking (Ginger was never much of a barker), but her tail was not wagging...and her hackles were up. I'd never seen Ginger's hackles raised, ever. And she is staring at this guy.

Golden Retrievers have very expressive faces. Ginger, being a good natured dog, usually had her happy face on. But not this time. I glanced over at her and was frankly a bit frightened. Because the look in Ginger's eyes and on her face was..."I am Death, and I have come for you. If you take one more step towards these kids, I will rip your fucking throat out."
Nor did I doubt for a second that Ginger could have jumped that four foot chain link fence we had like a shot if she wanted to.

I don't know to this day what Ginger picked up on with this guy, but she sensed something. I quickly terminated the conversation, and I think this man picked up on it too, as he left with alacrity. And like a switch being thrown, Ginger is back to her old self and goes back to playing with the kids like nothing ever happened.

Damn, I miss that dog...

She's really a sweet and loving and a "servant"-30 years of caring for in her home a severely disabled son and then her elderly, ill MIL and then her mother-who's now 96. For a number of years her MIL and her mother were both living with their family. I'm not sure i could do that. Then I came back to some light BIRD-.booby tit/hooter jokes with various hordelings. Thanks for the laughs, folks! :^)

Today I walked by water where I saw a blue heron stalking fish and drove through a town where one house had azaleas which were bright orange. Lovely! Thank the Lord it's not in the 90's today!

99 Reposting a pair of comments I saw at Belmont Club yesterday:

First, from "el baboso":

Not only a coup against Trump, but a coup against us, against the very idea that sovereignty rests in we the people and that the only powers a just and legitimate government possesses are those that the people freely delegate to it.

Instead, the "resistance" wants a oligarchical mandarinate that one can only be a part of by attending the right schools, joining the right law or banking firm, serving in the right party jobs, and working for the right think tank between party jobs. The rest of us, the citizens of this country, would be unqualified for office, to determine our political future on our own, and most importantly, to to ever withdraw our consent from an increasingly unjust and elite government.

If Trump is declared unfit, then we the people -- those of us outside the mandarinate and with no clear path to join it -- will objectively be unfit as well. After that, the mandarinate will proceed as it will, unchecked. Government of the people, for the people and by the people will be dead.

And from "Derek":

This is what is interesting. The rationale behind elections and democracy isn't some magical way of appointing angels. It is to make the hanging and beheading of those in power unnecessary.

The people doing this stuff in Washington are dismantling the systems and institutions that keep their heads attached to their shoulders. And they as so blitheringly stupid to not recognize it.

This isn't going to end well.

104 The loudest explosion I ever heard happened about 20-odd years ago. We were living in rural Montgomery County, Texas at the time, near the small town of Hockley.

Sun was up, but it was still early, and being on my days off, I was still in bed sound asleep. All of a sudden I'm awakened by the house being literally shaken, sort of a boomboomboomboomboom. Best way I can describe it was that God was knocking, and He wanted in BAD. My mother-in-law, who was living with us at the time, runs into my room, obviously scared out of her wits.

About this time, the phone rings. It's my wife, who was already at work, at a hospital about 20 miles away. "Did you feel that?" she asked. "What the hell was it? The whole hospital was shaken up". I told her I'd check and call her back. I turned on the TV, and the local morning TV news was still on. When I switched on the TV, it was just in time to hear the news reader say "Yes, ladies and gentlemen, we felt it too. We don't know what it was, but as soon as we find out we will let you know." I happened to know exactly where that TV station's studio was, and it was a good 50+ miles southwest of where I was.

It didn't take long to find out what had happened. About 50 miles west of me was the small town of Giddings. Outside of Giddings there was an underground natural gas storage facility. Sometime during the night, this facility started leaking natural gas, in large quantities. It had been cold that night, and there was a temperature inversion going, so that by sunup you had this huge cloud of natural gas, sitting close to the ground, waiting for something to set it off.

And unfortunately something did. Some poor schumck in his old beater came driving by, the car backfired or something....and set off the gas. The explosion was heard and felt over a good part of Texas and Louisiana.

Fortunately the loss of life was low. The guy in the car was killed, as was a family living in a mobile home that happened to be located nearby. But since that facility was located in a rural area, no one else died.

But boys and girls, that was one hell of a bang, let me tell you.

No disrespect to Ginger and dogs, but we all have that sense, we've just been conditioned to ignore it. Deployed soldiers have to re-learn to trust it.

We live out in the country - 1/4 mile from the nearest road and that road isn't exactly on the beaten path. You can have all the alarms, gates, and guns in the world but nothing scares the bejesus out of would-be bad guys like a dog who might mean business.

We have 2 goofy all-American dogs who live outside, one old girl GSD with a bad hip who moved in when my cousin, her friend, died, and a gorgeous black male GSD in his prime. They are the sweetest things and never met a stranger, but once or twice I've seen the Alpha's neck hair go up when a visitor arrived, and it really gets your attention.

Really, I agree., I do think dogs have some psychic sense. On the other hand, first time I was trying to babysit my friend's dog-which she had gotten from a shelter-the dog barked and ran all over the place trying to get away from me, and I'm neither a pushy evangelist or an axe murderer. Apparently, the dog prefers men to women. She has that reaction to most women who visit their house, I think she may have been abused by women as a puppy. She has gotten better with me now.

I'm a calm law abiding person, and am angry at this. I can only imagine far worse anger in others (and I am not suggesting this, but it is possible) who might be, say, compiling 'hit lists' of media people who have fueled this fire.

If I were a media person, I would NOT be doing what they're doing. Kind of like doing heroin..feels great at the time but with a great potential downside.

Oh yes, the Texas City explosion. It took no time at all for the media and others to start drawing comparisons between the two. In terms of intensity the blasts were comparable, but fortunately the loss of life was far less in the latter case.Back then I had an uncle who was a star player on the University of Houston football team, and he and a bunch of his football buddies piled into their cars and drove down there to help. They were turned back by the authorities because the second ship was still on fire, and no one knew what was going to happen. The second ship blew up shortly thereafter, and that is how that anchor was found in a field several miles away.
It's still there, to this day, as a memorial.

Just an aside...I have a friend who has vertigo and she has been helped tremendously by vertigo exercises. Apparently there are a few different versions, but pretty much they all involve moving the head in different positions in a specific order. She said a couple that she first tried made her symptoms worse, but she finally hit on one that worked, and it relieves her vertigo in a matter of minutes.
