For which the doctors have me on a 2-week course of Cipro. I just don't feel up to much right now. Fortunately, the book thread was mostly done before I started feeling like crap, so there's that. Hopefully, I'll be back to normal next week. And not to worry, all you 'ettes, there's some dress pr0n below the fold.Problem 1 - White To Play (482) Hint: White can win material 8/p7/1pkprrp1/2pR1p1p/2P2P2/1P1Qq3/P2R2PP/5K2 w - - 0 1 Problem 2 - White To Play (BWTC 172) Hint: White can mate in at most 4 moves r1b1qrk1/2pp1ppp/pb1n1Bn1/1p6/3PPQN1/1BP5/PP3PPP/RN3RK1 w - - 0 1 And Now, Dress Pr0n! It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and past it into your chess app. ___________ So that about wraps it up for this week. I mentioned last week that I wanted to re-learn (from my long ago youth) card games like cribbage, gin rummy, etc. I discovered my ability to shuffle a deck of cards is terrible. I could shuffle cards as a kid. It doesn't help that my hands are like catcher mitts. But I also learned that the actual cards make a difference. Regular decks like Bicycle and Bee give me the most trouble. Better, more expensive, plastic decks like Copag, KEM, or Da Vinci are easier.
I know there are mechanical shufflers but part of my interest is to get more dexterity in my hands. On a side note, while reading about different decks I was surprised how strident regular card players are about their preferred brands. Not professionals, which I might expect, but dedicated amateurs. It reminded me of longbow/crossbow or Chevy vs. Ford. Made for amused reading. Posted by: JTB at May 20, 2017 05:44 PM (V+03K) 40

A strategy related question for the Chess Morons:
As Insomniac so succinctly said the other day, I am shocked to find myself in the middle of a gay catfight. FYI, heterosexual female here. Back story: Two work friends, J and T. They are in a long term gay relationship. J is my department supervisor, T is a coworker. I had a falling out with T around the time it was announced the business was going to close in the fall. T has gone full psycho, and although I tried to salvage the relationship, T went full on Histrionic Liberal Victim and I haven't spoken to him in 7 months. Since that time, J and I have done several things together. J knows T does not want me to spend time with him (T is super possessive and controlling) and J will not lie to T about what he does and with whom. Tried to be civil to T the other day, and it went incredibly badly, and ended up with T telling me in a threating manner that I was not to spend time with J outside of work. "Or else" was unspoken. It was a threat. Well... I find myself in a conundrum. T has gone off the deep end, has my phone number, knows where I live and what car I drive. I do feel that he would not hesitate to key my car, slash my tires or even "accidentally" hurt me at work. If I talk to HR, I will put myself in the position to be a victim on this nut job. I restarted playing chess after 40 years, and am now getting my ass kicked by 7 year olds on chess.com. Posted by: BumperStickerist at May 20, 2017 06:02 PM (uBKPR) Tell me about it. Some years back, one of the other guys in my church brought his 8-year-old over for a game. The little shit cleaned my clock. I was amazed how such a young boy was able to coordinate his pieces in a strong mating attack. This is stuff that ordinarily takes years to learn. Told his parents they should probably take him down to a local chess club to see if his talent can be evaluated, but they never did. O'Muse, before you take Cipro, please google "fluoroquinolone-induced tendinopathy." Read and take careful notes. The main symptom to look out for is pain in the Achilles tendons (followed by spontaneous rupture). If this happens, stop taking the medication, and call your attorney.

Speaking of history, in my reading this week I read of the tragic story of Ignaz Semmelweis, the Hungarian physician who pioneered antiseptic practices for medical operations.
Despite his results (mandating that surgeons wash hands in chlorinated water before entering the OR), he was bucking the "consensus" of the day, and eventually was driven out of practice and even when teaching obstetrics was only allowed to use leather dummies for instruction, not live patients. His textbook was shunned in favor of titles teaching the prevailing practices. Eventually he was driven to insanity by his frustration. Once he was beaten badly by the asylum staff, and in a cruel irony died of infections from the wounds he incurred from it. And lo and behold, human nature hasn't changed in 150 years. No apologies necessary gNewt. A big thank you to the Horde for your input, I do appreciate it. I have done the retreat thing since last fall, but that will be harder since we'll be working in closer quarters this summer. And yes, I am job hunting. This pays quite well for the amount of time I have to be there, which is why I haven't quit yet. There are some other options as well. Our department brings in contract labor, some of which are scary [hetero] black guys who like me. I'm thinking about talking to one or two of them. When I first explained to someone in my department what was going on, they thought it was one of the contract guys bothering me. And yes, there is parking lot security and so on. The only benefit I have is that I'm almost 2 hours away from his place, and he hates to drive, so it would take an effort to come to my place. He may or may not have my address. As for the rest, I will miss J's friendship, but he's enabling the psycho case, and, to be honest, I assumed we'd lose touch in the fall. So maybe I just should just blow this all off and continue Doing What I'm Told by the Psycho. Also... awesome race! Go Cloud Computing! Posted by: shibumi at May 20, 2017 06:55 PM (BPeNq) 193

Lasorda, 89, has a history of heart problems and was hospitalized following a heart attack as recently as 2012. Charles I was embarking on a number of interesting things, taxation without consent of Parliment, raising illegal taxes, quartering troops without consent or payment, bills of attainder . . .
That these were hot button issues in the American Revolutionary War is not surprising since a good number of the American colonies were set up by or in conjunction with the Puritans and the members of Parliment and the House of Lords that initiated the proceedings against Charles I, and George III was nothing if not a traditionalist in the way that Charles I was. LOL. My three basic criticisms of the game are: 1) They've simplified it to the point of silliness. The original Diablo had three character classes, but a lot more flexibility in how to build your character than later games. I want more potions, spell scrolls, etc., back. And class-specific skill trees need to go away. 2) It's cartoonish. I rolled my eyes when the Skeleton King (How many times does this fucker need to be killed?) floated in the air, shouted, "You can never defeat me!", and laughed. It was stupid. Compare that to The Butcher from D1, where you walk into a room covered in blood and gore, and hear a voice whisper "fresh meat..." 3) It's too damn easy. I died twice on Normal difficulty, both times because I was lazy and didn't respond to something. The rest of the time, I basically sat there blasting away everything, including Diablo and Malthael with overpowered spells. Posted by: Colorado Alex In Exile at May 20, 2017 07:37 PM (Tnhbr) 258

Well he knows T doesn't like it, knows what kind of a person T is and yet doesn't mind putting you in harms way to get a rise out his lover. NOT a friend. These people are making you an supporting player in their strange little story. Your job is over there soon. Stay away from them both, get to looking for a new side gig - maybe the venue that will be taking over for most of the events that used to be held at your current place will be needing more employees. Beat the rush of all the folks that aren't gonna start looking until the week the p(a)lace closes. Posted by: cfo mom at May 20, 2017 07:46 PM (RfzVr) 259

My problem with it was not so much the difficulty (It is a pinball machine.) Rather there is nothing to the game but the grind. I liked the game much better as Borderlands 2. Loot fest with some humor and actual characters you could like. Posted by: Aetius451AD at May 20, 2017 07:46 PM (ycWCI) 260

Screw the Cipro. Lots of side effects, temporary solution. Start eating a small handful of pumpkin seeds every morning. The zinc in the seeds is readily absorbed by your body and will reduce the swelling in your prostate. Eat them for the rest of your life. You're welcome.
