McMuffin is a real piece of dirt. I can't say I had much common sense last year (I was planning to vote for Johnson before he flipped out over an interviewer daring to call illegal immigrants illegals - at which point I voted Trump), but McMuffin always struck me as . . . odd. I've since learned why. He's essentially a very bad actor doing a very poor impersonation of a "conservative".

I saw some good comments at Belmont Club. From "el baboso":
Not only a coup against Trump, but a coup against us, against the very idea that sovereignty rests in we the people and that the only powers a just and legitimate government possesses are those that the people freely delegate to it. Instead, the "resistance" wants a oligarchical mandarinate that one can only be a part of by attending the right schools, joining the right law or banking firm, serving in the right party jobs, and working for the right think tank between party jobs. The rest of us, the citizens of this country, would be unqualified for office, to determine our political future on our own, and most importantly, to to ever withdraw our consent from an increasingly unjust and elite government. If Trump is declared unfit, then we the people -- those of us outside the mandarinate and with no clear path to join it -- will objectively be unfit as well. After that, the mandarinate will proceed as it will, unchecked. Government of the people, for the people and by the people will be dead. And from "Derek": This is what is interesting. The rationale behind elections and democracy isn't some magical way of appointing angels. It is to make the hanging and beheading of those in power unnecessary. The people doing this stuff in Washington are dismantling the systems and institutions that keep their heads attached to their shoulders. And they as so blitheringly stupid to not recognize it. This isn't going to end well. Posted by: rickl at May 19, 2017 08:00 PM (sdi6R) Posted by: Widespread Pepe at May 19, 2017 08:01 PM (2qHjF) 51

I think the one indisputably good thing about the whole media wetting their pants every day over Trump nonsense that gets us all so steamed up here is that it's finished the off the NeverTrumper RINOs as a media force for good (Washington is a different matter so far). Check out RedState's frontpage. The quality of the site has gone down the tubes in just a year. There is no constituency for these people when you have so many other media outlets competing for market share in the "I hate Trump" market, and any non-leftist who was ever the slightest bit sincere about their beliefs has to tire of this incessant elitist Yoko Ono style screaming from the media. I've turned to Breitbart for a lot of my news, even though I find their tone somewhat paranoid, simply because I won't support the MSM with even a click, and I certainly don't need to listen to some "conservative" pouring the same derision on Trump and his voters (even after Trump's done plenty of conservative things) day after day.

"I just fired the head of the FBI. He was crazy, a real nut job," President Trump said in a meeting with Russian officials last week, according to the Times report on a document summarizing the meeting. "I faced great pressure because of Russia. That's taken off." And how did the NY Slimes get their hands on this document? Posted by: TheQuietMan at May 19, 2017 08:19 PM (auHtY) What makes you think any such document exists? Why beleive anything these asshats say anymore. There's a scene at the end of, I believe, an early James Bond film, where the bad guy is holding the hero at gunpoint on the tarmac of an airport, and thinks he has the upper hand, until...an approaching propeller plane decapitates him in an instant as he steps backwards.
That's what I think is going to happen here -- the left is like the villain on the tarmac, while Trump has his hands up, yet strangely is still smiling and chuckling to himself. When the whole impeachment thing here fails, which it will, Trump knows he will then be immune for the rest of his 8-year term. Ooops! The propellers of reality. Some people will stick with it, but must will literally and metaphorically change the channel. OT, but there are people on YouTube claiming that SpaceX is faking the landing of their rocket stages. Elon Musk even cracked a joke about it. Someone asked him on Twitter why most of the landings have taken place at night, and he replied, "It's easier to get the CGI right."
Posted by: rickl at May 19, 2017 08:30 PM (sdi6R) ============= Just finished reading a biography of Musk by Ashlee Vance. Pretty well-done and balanced; he's certainly an interesting and iconic (Jekyll-Hyde-like) individual with a prodigious (likely eidetic) memory. I had a very negative opinion of him before, but that has softened. You have to hand it to the man, he gets results (always very late and over budget) even with the taxpayer subsidies. His employees (whom he pushes to unreasonable lengths, but no more than himself), generally, both love and hate him. Posted by: ShainS at May 19, 2017 08:49 PM (ZcAbN) 183

Remember when they leaked the conversations Trump had with the heads of Mexico and Australia? And then it turned out it was all bullshit?
This is the thing they do. This is secret, so it can't be released to you, so we will make up what it says and then the only way they can refute it is to release secrets. And then we will pounce on that. Posted by: blaster at May 19, 2017 08:51 PM (tFx3r) 187
To Kosciusko
GOOD Kosciusko, thy great name alone Is a full harvest whence to reap high feeling; It comes upon us like the glorious pealing Of the wide spheres-an everlasting tone. And now it tells me, that in worlds unknown, 5 The names of heroes, burst from clouds concealing, And changed to harmonies, for ever stealing Through cloudless blue, and round each silver throne. It tells me too, that on a happy day, When some good spirit walks upon the earth, Thy name with Alfred's, and the great of yore Gently commingling, gives tremendous birth To a loud hymn, that sounds far, far away To where the great God lives for evermore. Dershowitz - while dumb as a post politically (even to the point that his vehement nearly unhinged pro-Israel fanaticism doesn't make him uncomfortable with the vile authoritarian anti-Israel party he grew up with), is OK for legal technicalities.
And most of his points have been made, or speculated about here - even in the last thread. The bit about a president having the power to direct the FBI chief is one of those classic cases: technically clearly correct, but in practice (reasonably) superseded by an historical consensus that maintaining maximum FBI independence - at least in criminal matters, and esp. anything dealing with a president's own direct interests - is in the country's best interest. And even in this context - pursuit of a dismissed (for other reasons) and now thereby disgraced figure presumably for technical violations of foreign agent registration rules - if Trump said what is reported it seems quite reasonable. If it was a counter-intelligence probe, that changes the picture, but I don't think that was in play. Nothing Flynn is reported to have done/said crossed any of those lines. 172 Propeller scene:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jW1CeAVPhVg Posted by: Emmi Thx! However, that's not the scene I was thinking of. That "Raiders of the Lost Ark" propellor scene was a complete ripoff of the exact same concept from a movie many years earlier. Could have been a Charles Bronson film from the '70s, but in my memory it was actually an earlier action film from the early-mid '60s. Maybe a Bond movie, or some similar spy/thriller drive-in fare. "[Dershowitz] also emphasizes that a candidate coordinating with a foreign govt.
to help win an election is not a federal crime. There is no statute forbidding it." Errrrrrrrrrr if there is coordination to the level of promising specific government action on behalf of that foreign government after the election has been won, I figure that even a 1L student could argue it as a potential breach of the Emoluments Clause. (Not to imply that such promises were made in this case.) Let's note that President Obama and would-be President Hillary Clinton would also have been in a world of legal hurt if such a strict reading of the Clause were to have been applied to them. As for Dershowitz, I really wish he had faded into early and deserved obscurity after the stint he had on the O.J. Simpson murder trial defense team. Even if I occasionally agree with the guy these days, he's still a shitweasel. Posted by: torquewrench at May 19, 2017 09:01 PM (ujwCG) Posted by: Egg McMuffin at May 19, 2017 09:01 PM (Uxokn) 203

His employees (whom he pushes to unreasonable lengths, but no more than himself), generally, both love and hate him. Posted by: ShainS at May 19, 2017 08:49 PM (ZcAbN) Yeah, he's a workaholic and he just naturally assumes that everyone else should be, too. Yet it's not unusual for a business owner to work at least as hard as his employees, Marxist propaganda notwithstanding. I don't think I'd have the energy or stamina to work for him, though. Still, for a young engineer to have SpaceX on his resume should make any prospective employer sit up and take notice. Posted by: rickl at May 19, 2017 09:02 PM (sdi6R) 204

Plus he's likely a far-out lefty loon who really believes he's saving the human race (because we're destroying the planet) by getting us off this rock ASAP. The problem is the existence of the taxpayer subsidies. That's on the government.
Just as there is nothing wrong with taxpayers taking advantage of any legal deductions they are entitled to, I can't fault businesses for taking advantage of any subsidies they can. Posted by: rickl at May 19, 2017 09:14 PM (sdi6R) 206
