Manet bar.jpg

A Bar at the Folies-Bergère
Edouard Manet

Don't get used to this ridiculous information overload that OregonMuse gave you yesterday.

Dates are a social construct designed to perpetuate the cis-normative patriarchy.

I have to admit that I am intrigued by this bartender... and does anyone recognize any of the booze?

Yeah the women are nowhere near the same physique and hair color. Manet was a very good painter so if he wanted to do reflections, a) they'd be executed perfectly and b) he'd make it obvious that you're looking at a mirror in the first place.

77 This problematic painting is terrible on so many levels, representing the patriarchy as it does, but the most pressing problem are the flowers represented by the artist as pushed between the subjugated woman's breasts. This is a statement that she is nothing more than another bar decoration. The only other flowers in the painting are in a glass on the bar and we are meant by the artist to conclude this strong woman is nothing more than a bar glass with flowers in it. Pretty damn obvious.

212 OK, sorry to beat a dead horse but had to reply to something in the last thread:

"How do people who get grossly overweight not look themselves in the
mirror at about the halfway point from skinny to where they are now and
not say, "Damn...this is a problem. I should do something about it."?"

Based on my own experience, there is NEVER, EVER a single day when someone who is grossly or even moderately overweight doesn't think they "should do something about it". The problem is that "doing something about it" becomes an increasingly overwhelming task, particularly when the rest of your life is crazy/stressed and your favorite foods are your only form of solace. In addition, the body has a built in reaction to perceived starvation that makes weight loss increasingly difficult with every failed attempt. So it's easy to just give up and say the heck with it, I'll eat what I want to eat. At least it's not tobacco, pot, booze, gambling or drugs....

That said... small, gradual steps such as increasing exercise, reducing (not cutting out completely) portions, etc. do help quite a bit. I know they have helped me as far as maintaining my weight, having more energy and strength, etc. but I still have a long way to go and there's no telling how soon, if ever, I will get there.

As far as "fat shaming" or "body shaming" goes, I agree 100% that overweight people should NOT be gratutitously insulted or assumed to be stupid or lazy. However, I DON'T agree with forcing people to pretend that being fat is just as attractive or "hot" as being thin, and I don't like seeing women of my size or greater wearing short shorts, tank tops, tight skirts, etc. out in public. I accept the fact that fashions designed for 20-something skinny girls just ain't going to work on me.

I just read Sandburg's account of Lincoln and Grant meeting for the first time when Lincoln gave Grant the Lieutenant Generalship at the beginning of 1864.

295 Great catch on the Pear Williams, moki! Definitely Champagne in the bottles with gold foil tops, and Bass in the bottles with the red triangle. The other bottles must be some kind of wine, more likely a rosé rather than a red (or it could just be artist's license). The painting is from 1882, and red wines weren't as red and extracted as they are now. But rosé was also made at that time, and the Loire would be a reasonable guess as the source, since it was close to Paris and the wine would be on the sweeter side--suitable for a party drink at the Folies.

Busted a shear pin on my mower, and now I can't get the flywheel off, (BS 15.5 HP 28N707). Penetrating oil X 3 days, and so much tension on the flywheel puller it's bending. Will never forget how George Bush met w/NYT editor (Kelly, IIRC) when they had a story about the terror financing tracking program. He asked them not to publish it because it was a really effective program that the story would kill. They ran it anyway and the writers naturally got a Pulitzer.

And wasn't it the WashPost who did a story on the planes and CIA agents who were transporting terrorist captives for interrogation - outing the people and planes used (including #s on the tails of the planes used, which airports, etc.).

No words for how craven these people are just to harm a prezzy they don't like. They are totes OK with helping terrorists and getting Americans killed to score points.

358 Example of how fake news can be inserted into a real story.

In my car this morning and TownHall comes on at 9am with the news. Says Sen. Thom Tillis collapsed during a 3 mile charity race and was given CPR at the scene, then put into an ambulance and rushed to a hospital.

I"ve just now had an opportunity to check on this and imagine my eye roll when I see Mr. Tillis has put out a video saying he is fine, he just got overheated and went down.
There was never any "CPR", he was administered to on the run route , then taken to a hospital for a full evaluation(unlike Hillary, who simply went to Hospital Chelsea and got shot up with whatever and was dancing on the street three hours later)

Tillis' video went out from his ER bed and he has since left the hospital.

How do you look at someone who fainted during a run, and then report they were given "CPR"

He has been insufficiently aggressive in cleaning house. An FBI shorn of its top two layers of leadership on day one would have been preferable to what we have now. He has not followed through. Mind you, he's probably done more than anyone else would have, but he's either not bloody-minded enough or he's been poorly advised.

420 I just read Sandburg's account of Lincoln and Grant meeting for the first time when Lincoln gave Grant the Lieutenant Generalship at the beginning of 1864.

-
Good story about Sherman and Lincoln. Sherman met Lincoln in the first days of the war. Sherman attempted to impress upon Lincoln that they were in for a hard fight to which Lincoln responded, "Oh, I imagine we'll be able to keep house." Sherman thought he was an idiot and, although offered higher command, Sherman accepted only becoming a colonel commanding a brigade. As he was leaving he met Irwin McDowell who bragged of his own high command and told Sherman that Sherman could have demanded higher command. A few weeks later, McDowell humiliated himself and the country at First Bull Run.

After Richmond fell in 1865, Sherman, now second to only Grant in influence, again met Lincoln as he toured the former Confederate capital. This time Sherman was struck by Lincoln's humble wisdom and compassion. A few days later, Lincoln was dead.

It is unclear to me whether Sherman misjudged Lincoln in 1861 or whether Sherman met a changed Lincoln in 1865.

You cannot have a special prosecutor appointed to investigate a counter intelligence matter.

And David Webb had on a constitutional lawyer big wig last week who is so frustrated over all the babbling from Congress about independent prosecutors, whom DO NOT EXIST anymore. Independent prosecutor law was allowed to expire via congress about a decade ago after both parties realized how far afield an IP can go a la Ken Starr. Not to mention the original law setting up independent prosecutors was unconstitutional because the constitution only allows for three branches of government , one of which is the judicial branch with is overseen by Congress and appointed by the President. An independent prosecutor answered to no one and had no restrictions per the bill of rights, etc. because he was independent of all three branches.

Justin Amash is Glen Beck nutty. He needs to be primaried and his constituents need to understand that any of us can be fooled by a representative.

No doubt. Lincoln knew essentially nothing of military matters when he assumed office. He trusted career military leaders knew what they were doing, and what they were talking about.

He was awed by sharp looking fellas in shiny uniforms (and also dismissive of old foops like Winfield Scott).

Eventually he learned enough about military matters to know it mattered who you put in command, and it mattered that you kept the politicians out of it as much as possible, especially himself.

was damaging to Trump in retaliation for his firing. But of all the deep staters, his information was
likely the least damaging information to the country and national
security. And he is probably the least lefty wacko.

You think Koskinen would hesitate to leak the tax returns or falsified version of every Republican since Reagan if fired?

You think Lerner would hesitate to falsify criminal investigation and evidence about this administration and leak it?

473 The media has been unmasked. They've cried wolf so many times and been shown to be liars that I think people, and not just conservatives but pretty much anybody to the right of Michael Moore, are tuning them out. They are becoming irrelevant. This makes them even more frustrated and makes them foam and scream and turn the crazy up even more. Wash rinse repeat.

Highly recommend OAN news. Channel 347 on Direct TV. Actual news, delivered without hyperbole.

This morning, from OAN, I learned President Trump and President Erdogen from Turkey held a news conference yesterday and discussed cooperation on fighting ISIS.
I also learned that there was a deadly tornado in Wis. and OK yesterday and saw details of it.
I also saw protests and learned what they were about in Peru yesterday. I also learned that another South American gov. is transferring prisoners in masse from one prison to another due to gangs organizing and running operations from individual prisons and so they are moving them around.

Etc. Factual news , with few commercials and an obvious respect , without being syncophants, toward Trump and the Trump Whitehouse.

And to be fair, Karl Rove was on Maria this morning and was defending Trump. Discussing how he talked yesterday with a DC lawyer who is aghast at the Time's leaks and says that Trump has done nothing wrong and moreover, has every right to be discussing individual cases with the FBI director in which national security is part of the equation.

476 We got married twenty five years ago as of this saturday, and the MW oven we received as a wedding gift lasted us until just last year.

Yeah, but I bet the wife's taken a lot more maintenance.

We have an unusual microwave - it's a Sharp R-1214 undercounter (but not over-the-range) model. It's the only one on the market like it (and as such it's been in production since forever and Sharp still sells it) and we did a rather unique installation that won't accommodate anything else.

So it's kinda like our marriage. We change the mica waveguide every five or six years and go on...

(fwiw, we have several kitchen appliances that date from around the time of our marriage, and our Cuisinart food processor and Kitchenaid mixer were my mother's and date...in the case of the mixer, probably into the late '70s, the Cuisinart into the mid '80s)

What I want is a government run and guided by conservative principles. If Trump can't or won't do that for any reason, then I'd be fine with Pence in the Oval Office.

Right now, I'm really not too convinced of Trump's conservative credentials.

He seems more interested in countering the media's Russia stories instead of actually leading and promoting conservative governance.

Why does he care if the media pounds the Russia drums? He did nothing wrong so pay them no mind. Get your legislative agenda ready and move on it. Work with the House and Senate while you can, get shit done.

553 Here in New York, there is a practice of capturing political appointees from the opposing party rather than replacing them with appointees of the your party.

It is a form of career control. The Governors and Mayor then know what the political appointees are doing and can defang them and grind their career to a slow and tedious pace.

If you cut them loose, they can go out and work against you full time/all out without the restrictions of financial reporting, ethics restrictions, direct observation, etc. etc.

It's like a tiger cage appointment.

I clicked on a link here last year and the next thing I knew I got an ominous ransomwear alert telling me to call an 800 number or else. I freaked out and called my husband, who told me to immediately shut down my computer, which I did. He took it into his office the next morning and had one of his IT guys working on it for a couple of days to clean it up.

595 Here is the deal on the painting. Tall, blonde, long face, fair skin, pink features IYKWIM, that's French Huegenot all the way. A religious sect, they were kind of like the Jews, without the long religious history, and basically blamed for everything wrong in France, back in the day (again, like the Jews now and then). The classic thing was to call, and to portray in art, all the young Huegenot women as prostitutes. So there you are. A little cultural commentary in that art.

I find it interesting that Bass Ale would be so prominently displayed at a high-end French cabaret. Beer in general seems an unlikely beverage for that milieu, and British beer even more so. I would never have expected to see Bass there.
