ABC Cancels Tim Allen Comedy "Last Man Standing"... Despite High Ratings

No politics here at ABC/Disney/Marvel/ESPN.

The cancellation came as a shock for many fans considering the show's high ratings. Deadline reports the sitcom was the network's second-highest comedy this season and averaged 8.1 million viewers, just behind "Modern Family," which averaged 8.7 million viewers this season and was recently renewed for two more seasons. It was also ABC's third highest watched scripted series behind "Grey’s Anatomy" and "Modern Family."

So why was the show killed?

Some fans speculated it was due to the show's conservative slant.

ABC denies that politics informed the decision, though they admit, this was a hard choice, given that the show was a "steady performer."

They're claiming they're just not doing comedies on Friday nights any longer -- making Friday night all about its poor-performing, in-danger-of-being-cancelled-every-year Agents of SHIELD and its new (8-12 episode) Inhumans series, and I guess they can't find any room in their schedule on other nights for their third highest watched series.

"'Last Man Standing' was a challenging one for me, because it was a steady performer,” said Channing Dungey, ABC Entertainment President. "Once we made the decision not to continue with comedy on Friday, it was just kind of that's where we landed."

...

Dungey said she used the same criteria in considering the future of "Last Man Standing" as she did in examining what to do with other canceled series, like "The Catch," "The Real O’Neals," and "American Crime."

Except those shows were not the network's third highest rated show.

She also said studio ownership, future creative direction, ratings and viewer engagement were factors she considered in making her decision.

What does that mean? "Future creative direction"? Does she mean that they're taking ABC on the same path as ESPN, where no conservatives are welcome either on TV or in front of it?

I wonder what "viewer engagement" means -- I have a feeling they mean people don't tweet about the show. Instead, they do this bizarre thing called Actually Watching the Show.

I think it would stun and blindside ABC to sell the show to a competitor network only on the condition that it be put up against Modern Family or the on-life-support Agents of WHO CARES.

Speaking of that, for established TV series, there should be a list somewhere where you can check which episodes you should watch first that give you a good representation of what the show is about and the humor or tone. Especially with comedies, it often takes a season or so for the writing to get consistent and figure out how they want the characters that starting at the beginning isn't often great.

I do wonder if there's a possible stockholder derivative action here. The show was the third highest show, it doesn't appear that there were contract issues and it sells well in syndication, though I *think* Disney doesn't get a piece of that action.

Yeah, this is a conscious decision to cancel a show that was a money maker for no obvious reason at all.

Considering that Disney loves only copyright law more than it loves money, this really does appear to have only a political motivation.

78 In fairness, this may be less about left wing bias than simple, stupid, short-sighted capitalism. The TV biz has swallowed whole the idea that a lower-rated show owned by the network is better than a higher-rated show owned by someone else.

They're chasing after the money to be made in secondary and tertiary platforms like Hulu, Netflix, etc. It's blinded them to the fact that getting people to watch their network in the first place is the actual point of their enterprise.

television - (te le vi zhen) noun (archaic)
A type of sedative used in nursing homes and for terminally ill patients in hospitals. Also occasionally used to sedate passengers in airport terminals. During the middle portion of the 20th-century, television formerly was considered a form of mass entertainment, but by the arrival of the 21st century had been almost completely forgotten, so the definition of television as "a device which enables the remote transmission of moving images" is now considered obsolete.

Maybe so. The conservative slant was hinted at in the show's first season -- Mike, Tim Allen's character, was clearly not a liberal snowflake, and was not afraid to say so. Then the arguments/discussions between him and his oldest daughter, who is very PC, and Oldest Daughter's BabyDaddy, who is vegan to boot, ramped up with their recasting in Season Two. Rare it is on TV today to see a conservative character, let alone a male one, voice his opinions and yet not be painted as a doofus/bigot/clown.

It's also got some of the funniest dialog in current sitcoms. Remember, Allen began as a stand-up comic, and he knows how to set up a joke and make it pay off.

Ah, heck, watch the reruns for Molly Ephraim, the lovely middle daughter. Girl looks something like the young Elizabeth Taylor, but she does comedy like an angel.

99 Sort of a cross between Galaxy Quest and Star Trek as a comedy.
Objection: Galaxy Quest already is Star Trek as a comedy, which will mean that Orville will be a hackneyed retread. Y'know, since that is quite truly the only kind of thing that Seth M. even knows how to do.

100 90 Seth McFarlane is doing a SF show, The Orville. the critics are slobbering all over it. I peeked at the plot summary and it looks awful.

As a comedy in the vein of Galaxy Quest, it looks hilarious.

As a serious sci fi show? No.

108 There's a bit more to this. The show is (currently) produced entirely by 20th Century Fox Television. But the increasing cost of the show (because leads ask for raises every new contract) caused Fox to put a line in their contract with CBS that CBS Television (the production arm of CBS, not the network side) would start picking up half the cost of the show starting next season. CBS Television doesn't want to produce the show, so they pressured the network to cancel it.

I didn't watch the show for a number of years based on the overall premise. Then I saw a couple episodes, and now I like it.I don't care about/overlook the lefty/ghey stuff (which isn't too bad, or didactic, really). However, the writing and jokes are very quick, and clever. With respect to the characters, every one of them is quirky, annoying, and/or a doofus.
Plus, I think the comedy is even handed. When the gay couple (Mitch and Cam) sneaked into the restaurant they loved in defiance of the gay march outside, hilarity ensued. "What are we protesting now?" was the question they asked when they joined the protesting line. Then the waiter ran out to give them their receipt and credit card, busting them.....

193 As I said yesterday, the whole point of network TV as a business is to MAKE MONEY. That is the prime directive (supposedly). The shows are to put eyes on the tube to sell ads at high rates.
The "news" is there to put eyes on their channel to sell ads at high rates.

Simple. Easy Peasy.

Except the big winners certainly subsidize the losers, whether they are up and coming shows waiting for audience growth, or shows that press an agenda and get slotted into a prime night at prime time to sell it.
This is the last domino to fall, taking a money maker off the air for politics. All statements to the contrary are hogwash. But this bites them in the butt in the long run. After all, it's one less subsidy for the failing shows, and that means either cost cutting elsewhere, or more subsidy from the conglomerate they are part of.

Whatever. Nothing we can do about it except see it for what it is, and them for who they are.

Posted by: mustbequantum at May 16, 2017 01:54 PM (MIKMs)

212 There's also the matter of ownership - LMS is produced by 20th Century Fox Television and sold to ABC. This means ABC funds all (or most) of the production and gets all the first-run and ABC channel repeat commercial revenue, but the studio gets all of the syndication revenue.

2 Broke Girls was cancelled for the same reasons (It's a Warner Brothers Studio production), and it was doing very well, too.

Timeless was cancelled, and the un-cancelled, probably because as a joint Universal/Sony production, they renegotiated the agreement to give NBC/Universal more of the sweet, sweet syndication money.

They're chasing after the money to be made in secondary and tertiary platforms like Hulu, Netflix, etc. It's blinded them to the fact that getting people to watch their network in the first place is the actual point of their enterprise.

Mike

Posted by: MBunge at May 16, 2017 01:35 PM (0MU1I)

No, the point of the enterprise is to sell advertising minutes. Getting people to tune in to a show is how the networks build their product: The Audience.

The trick is to build an Audience in a demographic that can be sold to advertisers for top dollar.

If ABC was smart, they'd simply state that while the raw ratings were excellent, the demographics were such that they couldn't make enough from the advertising to keep the show viable. It'd still be bullshit, but it'd be a decent Jedi hand-wave distraction.

260 You missed the not-bolded "studio ownership" and that's a shame because there's the real reason why the show was cancelled.

See, networks don't own all the shows they broadcast. This means they don't make as much money on them, and their infantile execs can't ruin the shows with their notes.

This happened when the AE network cancelled "Longmire," based on Craig Johnson's best-selling mystery series set in Wyoming, despite the fact it was the network's highest-rated scripted show. They went to the producers, said "Nice show. Shame if anything happened to it."

"Like what?" the producers said.

"Oh, you know, cancellation. Maybe you should give us a share of the show. To protect it."

They didn't, and "Longmire" was cancelled. Fortunately, Netflix picked the show up and it's still running today. (Note: The story behind this came from Johnson, who freely talks about it on his book tours.)

ABC is notorious for fucking up shows. They did the same thing with "Lost," refusing to let the producers end the show when and how they wanted. The producers walked, the network hired the mooks to drain as much dosh as possible from it, and the result was a trainwreck. But, hey, they made their quarterly predictions!

Tim Allen must have gotten the same offer.

270 STATEMENT FROM ABC:

We reject the innuendo from this person who calls xerself "The Ace of Spades."

We note that "spade" is a well-known derogatory term for African-Americans, and since the ace card is the card with the highest value, therefore it is all too clear that this person is claiming superiority and domination over black bodies, a true modern-day slaveholder.

Our decision to remove comedy from Friday nights has nothing to do with politics. It is simply that in the age of Trump, things like comedy and laughter are suddenly trivial now. The comedic life is dead in America. Only the Revolution remains.

We are not concerned with ratings. It is our belief that Americans should be provided with essential television viewing without regard to capitalist concepts like "ratings."

We call on the federal government to define a package of essential television shows that every American must have access to. These shows must inform Americans on the correct news that an American should know and the correct opinions and attitudes that an American should hold.

And in order to provide access to these shows to the poorest and duskiest Americans, the richest and whitest Americans must bear their shared responsibility for making these shows available through a shared responsibility payment enforced by the federal government.

I have an intense loathing of the quirky/popular/pretty/outcast girl (and it's nearly always a girl) offing herself sub-genre of YA. It's angst porn of the worst sort. I have an absolute and particular loathing of John Green. It's as manipulative as anything that Nicholas Sparks writes but at least Sparks is going for a happy ending. Green, et al, are all about woe woe woe everything is helpless and awful and you'll never get past not realizing how smart, suffering, pretty whatever the object of your fixation was.

398 My guess is that Tim Allen's show ends up....nowhere. He's been blackballed by the entertainment industry.

I don't know where he goes next. He has plenty of money, and will continue to make money from the syndication of the show. It's just that it is a very obvious bit of "Hollywood" entertainment BS. They are canning the show because it doesn't fit into their propaganda.

The slogan of Disney in Walt and Roy's days was:
"Offering the finest in family entertainment"

Michael Eisner gets control when Walt dies, and drops the "family". And it's been downhill ever since. If Walt and Roy were still alive, they'd be hopping mad. Roy outlived Walt, and was fighting some of this, but he just didn't have the money and energy to stop it.

The motiff of the Left: take over an institution, kill it from the inside, and wear it's skin to pretend it still exists.

Every episode is the same thing.

Tall Blonde: *Offhand naive remark showing she doesn't understand all the horrible things going on in the city*

Kat Dennings: *Witty comeback which insinuates she likes to sleep around*

Eastern European cook of indeterminate accent: *crude sexual remark*

Old Black guy: "I'm old and black!"

Small asian guy: "Look how pathetic I am"

Older woman who also has prominent knockers: "I also enjoy having sex still!"

Laugh track: hahaha

I honestly don't think "business" plays a role in these decisions. It's not some sophisticated act to woo people.

If everyone involved can make money and they get to make the show they want to make and they get praise from their peers, that's all that really matters.

Years ago, large companies were run by staunch Republicans and they wouldn't have advertised if they thought the show as alienating people. Now it's SJWs that run the largest companies.

457 We love Modern Family, and have for years. It is (or was) a masterpiece of craft --

Theirs is an ensemble that you pair off, combine, and/or permute with the requisite hi-jinks ensuing. And to do that for nigh onto 8 seasons is no small thing. It's not as side-splittingly funny as it once was (what could be?) The non-sequitur misunderstood dialog alone is priceless. And the atrocious puns. And the references to Cam's childhood experiences on the farm... !

Often, the recording starts at the 'coda' / credits roll of of the previous show - which is uniformly and head-scratchingly unfunny.

Oh and speaking of unfunny, Will and Grace is coming back - and the 'trailer' is just achingly awful, with a laugh track after every line.

I envy the folks on that laugh track, because I imagine their relief at not having to listen to it live.

Yes. I was about to mention this.

I was unfortunate enough to overhear innumerable episodes of that stupid show as Mrs. Galt was watching it (or falling asleep while it was on). Incredibly whiny, leftist, preachy, smarmy, and lame.
The other gay guy is a well known actor, but I have repressed his name.
Waterson's whining gave me the strong urge to punch him in the face. I think 'mewling quim' accurately describes him.
Just mentioning it makes me want to punch them all.

461 honestly don't think "business" plays a role in these decisions.

I totally agree. Have you ever watched anything on Bravo? It's totally a gay channel. Andy Cohen--the mastermind behind those silly, but lucrative , "Real Housewives of Wherever.." runs that network.
Every commercial they run is from a top-flight corporation--automobiles , foods, whatever.

492 Re: all comments about "13 Reasons Why"

If you are already unhinged enough to contemplate or go through with suicide, you don't NEED a stupid TV show to go over the edge. The same comments about how the book/show is encouraging suicide are the exact same ones I heard 25-30 years ago as a young, teenaged headbanger about certain heavy metal songs/albums (Ozzy's "Suicide Solution", which is actually about alcoholism; the "Stained Class" album by Judas Priest).

I can't tell you how many times I heard Slayer's "Hell Awaits" album which such feel-good songs like "Kill Again" and "Praise of Death". I have yet to act on them for some reason.

496 I think ABC licenses Last Man Standing from Fox Studios and doesn't own it. It has been a late renewal the last several years because they've been renegotiating the licensing fee. I wouldn't put it past ABC given ESPN's crap, but this is likely an economic decision. Most of the nets are producing their own shows these days and not licensing from other network studios because the money is better with your own and you don't pay licensing. ABC doesn't get syndi money when LMS airs everyday on Hallmark, CMT, and local and indies. That likely all goes to Fox.

Posted by: laddy at May 16, 2017 04:32 PM (RAwQ4)

497 I've read that next season the costs of producing the show would have shifted from the production company to ABC. The cast's high salaries made the show expensive to produce. ABC crunched the numbers and decided it didn't make sense to continue. No political conspiracy, just a business decision.

501 "I think it would stun and blindside ABC to sell the show to a
competitor network only on the condition that it be put up against
Modern Family or the on-life-support Agents of WHO CARES."

I do not believe that will ever happen. When one network is pushed into this sort of self-wounding action, it is only done by a Hollywood network sufficiently broad-based to include threats to the other networks. Those who instigated this didn't want to wound ABC far worse than does this act, but threatened to do so, if ideological purity was not restored. The same threats will be made clear to the other networks.

In an industry so corrupt that it openly gives pedophiles awards, the demands about what they really care about are not going to be ignored by any one network.
