Quotes of The Day

Quote I

If you're white and you're wrong, then you're wrong; if you're black and you're wrong, you're wrong. People are people. Black, blue, pink, green - God make no rules about color; only society make rules where my people suffer, and that why we must have redemption and redemption now. Bob Marley

Quote II

I don't believe the world's a particularly beautiful place, but I do believe in redemption. Colum McCann

Quote III

The fact is there is forgiveness for those who seek God. And I believe in the power of redemption. Rick Perry

Beer. Is it for redemption? Nothing says "I'm Sorry" like a six pack of beer. Yes, an apology six pack.

Do you enjoy reading Hunter S. Thompson? Perhaps you would like to listen to his favorite LPs.

In this same letter, collected in his second volume of correspondence Fear and Loathing in America, Thompson included a list of the best albums of the “rock age” of the 1960s, “because the ’60s are going to go down like a repeat, somehow, of the 1920s; the parallels are too gross for even historians to ignore.” The list didn’t come from Thompson, strictly speaking, but “from Raoul Duke,” the hard-living alter-ego who would star in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, published the following year

According to Mark Steyn: Cultural Appropriation slays another. Shutuppery is accelerating.

My old friend Jonathan Kay was unable to resist some snide and bitchy Tweeting when CRTV dumped me two months ago, so I can't deny the malicious old queen in me would quite enjoy reciprocating now that he's out as editor of Canada's allegedly prestigious magazine The Walrus. But, alas, my better angels are with Sheila Gunn Reid on this one:

While I should be enjoying the left eating themselves, I think every time the shutuppery bullies win is a bad thing.

Agreed. And the shutuppery is accelerating: It's just claimed its second Canadian magazine editor in a week - over "cultural appropriation", which like everything else these days started off as some obscure fetish only plonking humorless fringe Marxists cared about and then suddenly, in nothing flat, reared up like the shark in Jaws and started chewing up everyone on the beach.

Not concerned about accurately predicting the weather in the next 48 hours; Scientists have come up with what our planet will look like in 1 billion years.

No one can ever say for sure what the future will bring, but a new video has summed up all the science-backed predictions that we can reasonably make about how Earth will change over the next 1 billion years, and our poor little brains are reeling.

The reality is that it's highly unlikely that anyone will be around to see most of these changes come to pass, so consider this your exclusive front-row seat to a world where supercontinents reign supreme, Mount Everest is no longer the tallest mountain on our planet, and the Sun is a lot hotter.

The ONT is curious who paid for this stellar forecast.

The Left = Bonkers. The proposed Travel Ban brings out the cuckoo.

We wrote here about an ACLU lawyer arguing one of the Trump travel moratorium cases in the 4th Circuit who said that the president’s order “could be constitutional” if only it had been issued by the rightful president, Hillary Clinton.

As a matter of constitutional law–or law, period–that is idiotic. But it wasn’t just a slip of the tongue by an incompetent lawyer. Today, arguing in the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, the lawyer representing the State of Hawaii answered a judge’s question by saying that “context matters,” and therefore a president other than Donald Trump could properly issue the same order.

Conservative Think Tanks. Are they thinking? Or are they just spending money?

Like generals fighting the last war, these think tanks failed to recognize that an entirely new set of challenges demanded an entirely new set of politics, represented by a President Trump whom they loathed. What they forgot is the Red Queen effect (from “Through the Looking Glass”: When your opponents can react to your ideas, “it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place.”

The ONT Musical Interlude

May 16, 2010, Ronnie James Dio, singer with Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath and his own band Dio died after a six-month battle with stomach cancer. He was 67 years old. Dio’s career began in 1957 with The Vegas Kings, which later changed to Ronnie and the Rumblers, then Ronnie and the Redcaps, then in 1961, Ronnie Dio and the Prophets. In 1967, Dio and Prophets guitarist Nick Pantas formed the Electric Elves, which shortened its name to Elf. The band’s success eventually landed them an opening slot for Deep Purple which exposed Dio’s voice to Deep Purple’s guitarist, Ritchie Blackmore, who later recruited Dio and other members of Elf for his new band Rainbow. via thisdayinmusic.com

May 16, 1964, Mary Wells started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'My Guy'. Written and produced by Smokey Robinson and The Miracles, it made No.5 in the UK. via thisdayinmusic.com

Melania Trump Slowly, but surely bringing class back to the White House.

For the first time in the history of White House tours, visitors will now be able to view the famous White House movie theater, thanks to a new directive by first lady Melania Trump.

On May 12, Trump announced that the “newest piece of the tour” was meant to give people more access to the building’s “rich history” and “wonderful traditions,” according to the Washington Examiner.

Refreshing compared to the last FLOTUS.

Dogs they are a unique animal. This guy likes hanging out on the roof.

Meet Huckleberry, the doggie who loves nothing more than spending time on the rooftop of his human’s house and looking at the world from up high. Passengers are so surprised by the view, Huck’s owner even wrote a ‘Don’t Be Alarmed’ note. It says that they’re perfectly aware of the strange roundabouts of their dog and that they make sure the canine is safe at all times.

Your humble Cob's youngest K-9 will sit for hours on the picnic table in the back yard surveying his kingdom the neighborhood.

You find yourself in a foreign country. You don't know the language. There aren't many English speaking people surrounding you. What do you do in your spare time?

The transformative power of boredom

After bouncing out of the minor leagues in the US, Eric Thames found himself playing in a second-tier professional league in South Korea. Not knowing the language and with few other Americans on the team, Thames spent a lot of time by himself, bored. Applying himself, he started working on his approach to the game, his swing, and his patience.

Lucas McCain: Name callin's a handy thing for some Mark. They smack a label on somebody or something and that's it as far as they're concerned. It's kind of a special way of hating because they don't take the trouble to understand.

Mark McCain: Well you have to put a label on some things, like say a pickle jar!

90 I went to a speech, I guess you'd call it, by HST in the 1980s with my GF, at a University. Hunter pulled out a very long Colt revolver and laid it on the podium at the beginning. That was legal, I guess, or whatever at the time. Nobody would try that today I reckon however.

What they're trying to do is freeze out cross-assimilation and cultural evolution, so that they can maintain every separate people as a political constituency that can be pandered to in order to buy votes.

If everyone cross-assimilates into one American culture, they can't play the race-baiting divide and conquer game anymore.

We just moved to south Anchorage. A house, finally, instead of a duplex or apartment. It is built on silt, which most of south Anchorage is, and so over the past 30 odd years it has settled unevenly, to say the least. I don't think there is a single flat surface in the place. Feels a bit like walking around on a cruise ship.

When I applied for renters insurance, they said this area is not coverable for earthquakes. She told me that most places aren't anymore. I guess they are bracing for the big one, or something. The biggest one we've had since this place was built was a 7.2 a year ago January, and there are a few cracks, but you can't tell if they are settlment or earthquake caused.

Life can be an adventure.

Pretty ironic that Hillary's campaign motto was "stronger together." The left doesn't want people "together" because it is much easier to control individuals if they are isolated.

Many years ago I asked on a forum, what was the deal with this "depends on what the meaning of is..is"; some reading material by conservatives was suggested and it was a real awkening. The left always resorts to trickery and deceit and parlor tricks and every sort of chicanery. I get that. That's what they do.

So what the fuck is wrong with "Republicans" then? They act like spectators, at best, or talk about "bipartisanship" reaching across the aisle and all that. Once in a while they'll mumble something about "tax cuts" but they don't defend or "conserve" anything. At least they aren't in the trenches fighting the culture wars. Admittedly a tough row to hoe, with liberal dominance of the media, but it still sucks, they've ceded or delegated so much authority in congress, there isn't anyone left who remembers how it's supposed to work, I guess. Mencken was right, Democrats screw shit up, Republicans make sure it stays that way.

301 Yeah, CCI still makes a full line of their shot-shell cartridges for handguns. I've got the 38 and 22LR ones - and I think the 9mm ones, though that's semi-silly, if you have revolvers, since a semi-auto will obviously be a single-shot platform with shot-shells.

"Snake load". My older brother made his own, back before they sold the capsules to load shot in, for reloaders (or at least he couldn't find them). He and his buddy used some glue and #8 shot, I think. They worked. He shot a large rattler in the front yard when I was in elementary school (Ruger Blackhawk).

The establishment in both parties share the same agenda - the ever-increasing centralization of power, and the continual usurpation of more powers by a perpetually expanding, unelected, unaccountable bureaucracy.

They're there to fool us into thinking that we have a choice, and that the process is working.

328 OK, gotta go do some gun stuff, but - WTF? I refer to several things.

First, what world is ace in, where he is deeming Trump as "not really working out" or whatever the phrase was he used in that earlier post? I have several huge problems, even keeping in mind it's mid-May - but they are literally topics never mentioned here, or elsewhere. So what is ace's problem with Trump? I haven't seem any specifics.

Second, WTF with "impeachment" talk? Or, to quote the now-disgraced PJ O'Rourke, WTFF? There's no more chance of impeachment today than there was in May 2009 - when the country was drenched in repugnant, east-bloc-like cult of personality idiocy about the affirmative action president and his ugly (inside) wife.

Third, Trump and his team had better get serious about a problem no other administration has ever faced - full-on, relentless, criminal "leaks" (false or otherwise) and insubordination from high in the nat. security side of govt. Unless I missed it, cannot recall another president's phone calls to other heads of govt. being leaked, or details (even allegations) about sensitive matters discussed in a room with the president and 4 other people, including important foreign representatives. These are not like typical leaks, which are a normal (and mostly stupid) part of life in Beltway. These are very different.

One reason they get hysterical though - the folks in charge of such things know that it's "temporary" in the sense that public sentiment can turn on a dime, fashions come and go, as it were. While a certain percentage go through life and never change their viewpoints, a great number of people are persuadeable if given the proper facts. This is why liberals fight so hard for everything. 376 Wasn't the quote something like "let it go" - Trump to Comey?

Again, true or not - at all - plus context - we really have nothing solid here.

But if that's what was said, it certainly sounds like someone telling another person who's wrapped around the wrong axle, or obsessed with something, or wasting his time, to stop wasting their time and energy. A bit of a derisive edge, too - "you've spent enough time wondering if your ex is seeing that guy you hate - just let it go".

And if it was of any - even fake - importance, it would have caused a (factitious) ruckus way back in February, or since.

Spoke with an old Beltway colleague today, haven't in a while. He was in complete agreement - we thought the idiocy of the last 8 years (and even some of the Bush years, talking about insane media nonsense) was the low-point. But the Beltway (encompassing the press, the Dems, many GOP, and much of the govt.) are leaving us - still - speechless.

Ace thinks Trump is a very bad man, very bad man indeed, terrible, really, just terrible, big-ly, believe me.

A lot of what I've seen though has been based on never trumping bullshit, fakenews, etc. Trump has said and done a lot of stupid things to be sure, but what grates my nerves is all the hatred directed on him based on total falsehoods. That's what the left does, it's beyond maddening to see the right do it too.

That's why I've turned tone deaf to anything negative about Trump, no matter how truthful it might be. If I criticize him for anything it will be based on what I actually hear him say, unedited, in context, not what I read in print.

477 Here is a question for the Horde.

I ended up moving to a very blue area a few years back. For various reasons I won't be leaving any time soon.

I've found in my time here I've made no close friends. I do have casual friends and acquaintances.

Part of that is that the blue staters around me invariably end up being lefty loons that used to spend a significant portion of their time lauding Obama out of the blue, and now do the same in bashing Trump and anyone that doesn't hate him.

I am very much in the conservative closet for them so they have no clue but it takes effort to deal with that when I am out with them so I find myself intentionally not getting too close.

A larger part though is that the people around me tend to be very insular and aren't looking to make new friends (I can strongly contrast it when I've lived in other parts of the US).

I have tried shaking up my interests and activities over time but it doesn't really change things.

My interests are a bit unusual in our modern benighted era - I am much bigger on history, real science, and philosophy and nowhere near as big on TV as those around me.

So...any suggestions? How does one find sane, conservative or apolitical friends as an adult?

478 I think the best Dead show I ever saw was Saratoga Springs in 1984. They opened with "Dancing in the Street" and closed with two encores: "It's All Over Now", and "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue".

As I recall, it was raining for most of the show. I've heard a bootleg tape of the first song with loud thunder in the background as the storm approached.

It's probably the best acid I've ever had as well. Oops, did I say that out loud?

487 Rusty, separate topic. Don't care about character, unless it affects results - because results are what I care about. In this case, the character flaws, or idiosyncrasies, seem as likely to help as to hurt (ego and monomania may be needed to achieve anything against the opposition or uselessness of 90% of the Beltway).

Meanwhile, Gowdy has an odd statement at WZ. Basically that classified info - something related to the infamous AG Lynch/Billy Jo Bob airport meeting - makes Comey's July debacle defensible. I have no idea how that logic could possibly work - and nothing changes the simple choice a competent, honorable FBI director who knew his responsibilities faced: go along with a hamstrung semi-investigation, be complicit in felonies and obstruction of justice, or resign and shriek to the heavens about obstruction and the obvious need for indictments based even on publicly-known information.

So Gowdy, also, is unfamiliar with the responsibilities of an FBI director? WTF?

There are no grounds whatsoever to attempt it, and what would make House GOP members who are so cowardly and useless they can't repeal O-care suddenly resolute on the insane suicide mission of impeaching a new president?

This bizarre wish-casting hysteria of the Dems, the press, and some of the GOP will not produce an impeachment, or a "wave" mid-term for the Dems.

590 Well, my hot water is back. When I had my morning shower, the water was barely warm, not hot. Pilot light on water heater had gone out. Attempted several times to re-light, but no go. As soon as I released the button, pilot went out. So, I figured, "Aha, bad thermocouple!" Because when the heating boiler quit, that was the problem. Go to hardware store, buy thermocouple. Come home. Damn, it's too short. Go back, exchange for 24" one. Come home, install it (you have to remove the entire burner assembly, too) and it still won't light.

Call the local plumber. "You have to press the tab on that switch that has the two wires going to it." Me, "I thought that was a flame sensor. It's got nothing on the inside, just two metal studs." "Look for the little tab", he says. Found a tiny tab on the junction block where the two wires go, press it, and doggone it, the pilot lit, and stayed lit. Evidently the thing is a flame sensor to shut off the pilot if it senses a flame outside the appliance. Who knew? Plumber told me if it continues to give trouble, just unplug it, and bridge the wires with a 3-amp ATO-style auto fuse, which will act like a fusible link, and melt in short order if there is a fire outside the heater.

Sure, if he wins he gets candy (and incentive to pitch the next temper tantrum). But he doesn't have sense enough to figure out that malnutrition is not in his long term best interests.

624 606. yep - getcha a good one - carbon steel. and check the interior - it should have a sorta rough surface (if hammered) or a series of grooves in it (if spun).

Those one-piece drop-forged things are as useless as those aluminum ones with the nonstick coating. You need a rough inner surface to help hold food when you push it up and out of the cook-zone.

Got a gas range, I hope? i've never had much luck with electic ones. Hell, for a while there, I used a little purpose-built charcoal burner for wok-work. Gotta be super high heat on super thin but rough metal to work properly - otherwise, you're just sorta braising or maybe steaming your food.

Anything from Paradox is usually very high quality. And they are one of the few who still make games in the 'grand strategy' mold. Their Hearts of Iron series (WWII) has been very good (have not played 4 yet.) Crusader Kings II is their latest medieval game and is pretty typical of the types of games and immersiveness they have.

645 other wok tips - use peanut oil, and heat that damned wok up until it's just starting to smoke before throwing anything into it. make sure all the stuff you cook is a as dry as humanly possible, and NEVER use those bags of frozen stir-fry veggies - too much water, they're too cold to cook properly, and the mixture contains stuff that does not and cannot be cooked together (i.e., the broccoli will be overcooked before the lotus root is done, & etc.)

Red Dead- OK.
Portal 2- Very Good.
Witcher 2- Ok. Witcher games pre-3 had a tendency to make the characters such raging assholes that you did not really become invested. 3 took the much better path of making the main story line something that drew you in and made you relate to the characters much better.

Sugar is a much cleaner sweetness. Plus Corn Syrup has a tendency to reduce the overall perception of sweetness. Try taking a swig of a modern soda and then eating a spoonful of ice cream.

684 Uncle Palpatine's Protein, Cabbage, and Mushroom Stir-Fry (adapted from a Northern Chinese dish favored by a very dear friend):

One pound tofu (extra-firm), beef, etc, cut into chunks about the size of sugarcubes. (if using tofu, cut up ahead of time, pat dry with paper towels, and leave, uncovered, in the fridge to dry out as much as possible)

One head Napa cabbage, chopped and shredded

Two small onions, peeled and chopped

Five cloves garlic, peeled and minced

Two knobs of ginger, each about the size of your thumb, peeled and grated

Half-pound of mushrooms, sliced

1/8 cup each of soy sauce (or Bragg's Liquid Aminos, which is tastier), hoisin, vinegar, and water

Three tablespoons of sambal

Two tablespoons corn starch

Fry the protein first, and as soon as it's browned, transfer out of the wok. Wait a moment and when the wok's smoking again, toss in the onions and stirfry for about a minute, then transfer out.

Add the cabbage in portions - about a handful at a time - and stir-fry for not more than two or three minutes per portion. Make sure you get a bit of scorch, but no actual char or burn, on EVERYTHING you cook. Transfer out.

Dump garlic and ginger into the wok and stir-fry for half a minute, then dump all the previously cooked stuff back in - again, in small portions, to keep the wok hot - and keep it all moving as it heats up. Dump in mixture of liquids as noted above after stirring cornstarch into them.

Keep moving until steam rises, then throw in the mushrooms. Flip and stir fry, then kill the heat.

it's done.

probably takes longer to describe the process than to actually do it. Great dish, never fails to please.
