Quotes of The Day

Quote I

"God could not be everywhere, and therefore he made mothers" - Jewish proverb

Quote II

"A mother's love for her child is like nothing else in the world. It knows no law, no pity, it dates all things and crushes down remorselessly all that stands in its path." - Agatha Christie

Quote III

“[Motherhood is] the biggest gamble in the world. It is the glorious life force. It’s huge and scary - it’s an act of infinite optimism.” Gilda Radner

Yes, rather predictable but what the heck.

'Moms: Your kids hijacked your brain for life.'

ONE DAY, A woman is spending her Saturdays doing her normal Saturday stuff—blueberry pancake brunch, curling up on the couch with the cat reading a novel, grabbing a beer with friends. By the next, her life is suddenly and completely about keeping a screaming, floppy, red-faced, cone-headed thing alive using fluids secreted from her chest. Happy birthday to that.

If you are going to go on a hunger strike. Leave the candy bars alone.

On May 7, Israeli authorities released a video showing imprisoned Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti, who is leading a "hunger strike" of more than 1,000 inmates held in Israeli prisons, secretly eating a candy bar in the bathroom of his prison cell. Israeli media outlets and journalists, like many of their Western colleagues, reported on the video, which has seriously embarrassed Barghouti and many other Palestinians.

A real hunger strike? You'll be dead in approximately 66 days.

How would you like to have this bitch woman as your Mom? She wouldn't know crap if it her in the head. Woman who changed hot lunch for school kids rips PDT.

But the Donald Trump administration has weakened some of the Obama school-lunch policies, and on Friday, Michelle Obama let loose, wondering why the administration thinks it’s OK for kids “to eat crap.

Go. Away. Far. Far. Away.

I think we can all agree that most Network Television is pure shit. One show that isn't is ABC's 'Last Man Standing'. In case you have never seen it, it stars Tim Allen. It looks like Trump Derangement Syndrome has claimed another victim.

ABC has opted not to renew the longtime Friday 8 PM anchor for Season 7 despite the fact that the blue-collar sitcom was ABC’s second most watched comedy this season with 8.1 million viewers in Live +7, only behind flagship Modern Family (8,7 million). It was the third most watched ABC scripted series overall behind Grey’s Anatomy and Modern Family….

New cars are expensive. New autonomous auto technology adds an additonal $5K to the price of a new car.Is it worth it?

Future, asked 1,260 people from around the country a number of questions in a “discrete choice experiment focused on energy efficiency and autonomous features.”

After running the data from the responses through several models (you can read all about their methodology in their full report), the study estimated that the average American household would be willing to spend $3,500 on partial automation and $4,900 on fully autonomous car tech. This, of course, is in addition to the already high prices of new cars today.

Congo Crisis

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has tragic history defined by its horrific abuse at the hands of Western colonial powers. After 75 years of occupation by Belgium—notable for a cruelty of rule that shocked and outraged even the French and British—the country was granted independence in 1960.

Feeling alone? Nope. Muslim girls want segregation.

With the goal of creating a “safe space” in mind, a Detroit school has set out to hold a girls-only prom to celebrate traditional Muslim customs. It’s being created for girls who would otherwise be prohibited by their ultraconservative Muslim families from going to regular proms, where attendees are allowed to have fun and dance with members of the opposite sex in good old American tradition.

And the Balkanization of America continues.

We coffee addicts have been telling you this for years. It turns out we were right all along — we actually would die without our coffee.

Research the world over is confirming that drinking coffee keeps you alive … but it doesn’t work if you drink it in moderation. In fact, Harvard researchers found that low consumption of coffee is linked to deaths from heart-related illnesses. To get the health benefits of coffee, you have to drink it like you mean it.

Wonder how my coffee consumption will go over with my doctor at the upcoming physical?

There's 34-year-old Kate, who works in finance downtown. "She's beautiful, smart, talented... everything going for her," her colleague tells me. "But her boyfriend doesn't feel settled in his career, so she spent thousands of dollars to freeze her eggs as she waits for him to be ready."

Susan, 41, a single senior marketing executive from the Upper East Side, is eight months pregnant. After waiting for her match and not finding him, she decided to have a baby on her own.

And then there's Joanna, from the Upper West Side, who tells me that at age 32, she stepped off the partner track at her law firm, halving her salary to work in the firm's marketing department, so she could focus on landing a husband. But at 39, Joanna is still single and childless - and unsatisfied in her career.

These women aren't alone. The latest US Census Fertility Report, published last week, found that for the first time in reported history over half (53.8 percent) of women ages 25-29 are childless and a record 30.8 percent of American women ages 30 to 34 haven't given birth. Most of these women are college-educated. And most are single.

Exactly. Mother's Day is a painful occasion for me because my mother was verbally and psychologically abusive. She's been gone since 2003, and I can't say I miss her except in the negative sense; that is, I know that she can't hurt me any more. I was blessed, though, in having two grandmothers and a lot of aunts and friends' mothers who gave me the nurturing and affection that I didn't get from her. Thanks to the other morons/moronettes on the ONT for letting me vent, and I hope you all have warm and loving relationships with/memories of your mothers. I'd give anything to be able to have that.

61 What actually happened in Congo wasn't Belgian colonialism. What it was, was exactly humanitarianism being exploited. If you look at your old maps they call it the "Free State". Here's the reason:

King Leopold II had got all the do-gooders in Europe to bless his mercenary occupation of the country. He told them it would be a "free state" guided into the twentieth century. Leopold instead ruled the place as his personal rubber-plantation.

It was the Belgian "colonialists" who took a second look, and then took away his empire and tried to fix it. They didn't get enough time to fix it before the Cold War and general de-colonialisation put the country in the hands of the warlord Mobutu, who was just as bad as Leopold.

Thanks-- it helps to know I wasn't the only kid messed up by a modern version of Medea. Unfortunately, I was literally an only kid (she used to tell me that the reason I was an only child was that "one mistake is enough"), which means that I got her meanness full blast, no sibs to run interference for part of it. On the other hand, at least I didn't grow up to be a special snowflake, so there are compensations for a rough adolescence.

118 Read the part about fetal microchimerism. This is fetal cells that colonize the mother. These cells from the baby migrate over the placenta and take up shop in the mother's body, including her brain. They become part of her.

I remember reading something about this several years when they discovered it. They found women with XY brain cells. WTF? they wondered. Well, they had boys, and these were cells from their sons.

I remember telling my mother that to freak her out. She said she knew something was wrong with her brain, and that explains it. My warped cells had taken root.

Its taken me 58 years to get along with my Mom, but we are finally there....

Why?

The 5 Love Languages... they are Touch, affirmation (telling someone you love them), Gifts, Acts of Service, and Quality time (time actually spent together, not just in the same place)...

I'm all Touch and Quality Time..... Mom is Acts of Service and Gifts....

So even though SHE was telling me she loved me, in her way.... I didn't understand it...

Nor was I able to show her I loved her.... because SHE wanted me to do things for her.... which was not the way I show love...

Now... however... I get it....

My parents were just the right amount of strict, and we had the usual differences when I was growing up, but we've had a very good relationship during my adult years. I am in the same boat, My Mom would get drunk and tell us that our DAd was not our real father, she was messed up. When she ran out of beer she would drive to the store and get NyQuil ( stopped selling beer on Sundays and at 10 pm) because it had alcohol in it. I always thought my mom was sick as a kid but she was just a drunk.

145 130 moki,

Yes, I did. I haven't taken medication for depression since then. I've been trying to go without them. Maybe it's time to change my mind about that.

Change your mind, and talk to your doc again. Your body, after heart surgery, doesn't make hormones the right way. The meds you take after surgery (hubby was on Plavix, simvastatin and atenolol) also screw up your hormones. You may only need to take meds for depression for a little while, to kick start your adrenals to make the proper dosage.

Sorry to nag, but I went through this with my husband. It was hard, and he still has rough days, but it did get much better with time, better diet and exercise. You may need something a little more. No shame in that. Get the help. You are worth it.

161 Another amusing one. At that restaurant we carried my mother, I spied a hottie, seemed like a few tables over. She was with some dude. No kids, and they were fairly young looking, so I assumed a date or something.

He looked a bit rough, I thought, and I thought she was well out of his league. What's she doing with him? Well, to avoid be obvious, I had to get several quick glimpses of her and put them together for the complete picture.

She was wearing a long sleeved blouse. And I then I noticed it. There was a green fungus looking thing on the back of her right hand. Tattoo. Big one, likely wrapping up her arm.

Then I caught her feet. Tattoos there. It was probably a whole body, or close to it, job.

Nope, she was right in his league all right. Hell, he may have been above her a notch or two. She would've been a real hottie, but damn.

I'm sure she spends most of her time wrapped around a pole. On the clock and off.

I'm a surviving twin. My brother was stillborn.

As long as I can remember, I've felt out of place, like there was something missing. A while back, while visiting Mom and my sisters back in Texas, I got to talk with a friend of Mom's during a church visit. She, too, had a twin who was stillborn, and she described that "out of place" feeling that she often has...and in the same way I would.

Survivor's guilt? A bunch of hooey? I don't know.

163 And for my brag/brush with fame for tonight, BB King came to Athens for a concert, and needed to see the Embassy doc to check his blood levels for diabetes. I was assigned as his escort as a perk from the Ambassador (I was staff aide for him) so I met him, brought him in, took him to the med unit. He was asking where I was from, told him Texas, so he asked if I grew up in church. I did, Southern Baptist. So we sat in the med unit singing hymns together. I tend to harmonize, so I took a descant, he took the melody, and we went through Old Rugged Cross, Come Thou Fount, Blessed Assurance and Just As I Am.

Lucille accompanied us. It was something.

Now, good night, sweet internet friends. I hope you all wake refreshed, blessed and cognizant of the very great love there is for you all.

So true. Since we rarely talk about it, we usually don't know how many others are suffering as well. The may look fine on the outside, but on the inside they're struggling to hold it together.

If you're not seeing a psychiatrist, bite the bullet and find a good one. They're much better than general practitioners for all but the mildest depression.

Elvis Presley had a stillborn twin brother, and some people think that his sense of survivor's guilt was a factor in his later problems with addiction to barbiturates and other drugs.

209 Autonomous cars have been proven to prevent the "phantom jams" that occur on crowded freeways when single drivers slow down for no reason.

It was known early in testing, but the earlier thinking was that it would take a component of autonomous vehicles of maybe 20 percent or more of the total crowd. Recent studies have shown all it takes is one or two "robot cars" to speed things up closer to what the flow should be.

Ah so. I don't know what to tell you. I do think that special connections can form between twins, but only observably so as they grow up together. It's tough to say that there's some, for lack of a better word, mystical connection that was broken because of what happened. It is quite possible that upon learning this, your mind went through the "what if" scenarios, presumably favorable, about having had a twin brother through your, and the sense of missing something arose from that process. Just my armchair psychologist $0.02, and probably worth about as much.

257 Random thought I've been tumbling around.

Is there an inherent good or bad to stoicism? I was raised in a fairly "emotions are a bad thing, all that matters is if you get results or not. You don't need other people, you don't need to be loved or even liked, all you need is to get results." environment.

But I didn't end up all that successful in life. I never went to college (my father wouldn't let me apply anywhere, because he didn't feel I worked hard enough to earn it), and I've worked a small series of crappy jobs that I always stay with too long.

And I'm starting to think he was full of shit about the whole "You need to be on your own with nobody else in your life" thing.

I know that he's right, on a practical level, about the "in the end, all that matters is results" thing, but I don't think I can live with this whole stoic-hermit thing forever.

But I really feel like I sound like a progtard by even saying this at all, so who the hell knows.

MS made updates mandatory with Windows 10. Well, somewhere there's settings where you can "defer" them, but only for a limited time. Hell, all of Big Software pisses me off with everything.

I installed Windows 10 last month, or late March to play with the new Linux subsystem, WSL or "bash on Windows". It's a version of Ubuntu. They put a module in the kernel that emulates the Linux kernel and it can run actual ELF Linux binaries (no X stuff, though. Yet).

I was absolutely appalled reading the fine print. I turned off all the phoning home and data collection shit I could, having to go through about 4 screens of settings to do it. Most non-tech people will just accept the defaults. If you do, MS (and Bob@NSA, of course) owns you.

288 221 Evening all.

A humble prayer request for myself, if you please. Having a exploratory procedure done tomorrow. The procedure is no biggie but my Drs found out the hard way last time that I am one of those patients that takes an inordinate amount of sedation to be put under. And I must be put under for this. So, it's a little dicey to wake up properly.

If you would please. Thanks.

I'm a deterministic nihilist, so it could be worse. Or maybe a nihilistic determinist. Either way I have no control over it and it doesn't matter anyway.

My instinct, with all due respect to your father, is that he was full of shit. Very few people can get by in complete isolation from others, whether we like it or not. Independence and self-reliance can be highly beneficial character traits, but when taken to an extreme can be detrimental. As one example, I'm not super social, but if I didn't have the Horde to talk to I would be in a much worse place than I am now. Plus, in many areas of endeavor, developing relationships, working with, and navigating your way through other people are essential to success.

Why the Sam Hill would that be political?

Sounds like a control freak impeded your choices, and you need to start breaking that mold. Which is, by the way, a long, difficult process.

People are freaking different, and people are freakishly hung up on being different. Unfortunately. That goes for people who claim to love difference as much as it does people accused of fearing it.

As for stoicism, IMHO it's of primary benefit to others, and at some point you have to realize that's *why* they're telling you to be a stoic. And then you have to decide what you should do for *you*.

Pretty much everybody's grand philosophy of life comes down to "shit I want to be around," and at some point you need to decide what you want to be around and act on that, and it sounds like you don't like where you are very much.

And there's no easy way, you just have to do it like everything else, one foot in front of the other.

357 King Leopold II had got all the do-gooders in Europe to bless his mercenary occupation of the country.

IIRC, one-time British diplomat Roger Casement had a part in blowing the lid off that, amongst other things he blew. He ended his days as a client of His Majesty's hangman, and justifiably so, but he did manage to shed a light upon the abuses suffered by the Congolese.

366 Think of it like this; we use turn signals to signal a change in our routes. Many drivers ignore or are unaware of them. Autonomous systems can't ignore them and are more aware of them than 99,99% of human drivers considering they'd be transmitted to all vehicles in the vicinity.

The problem with human/auto traffic is there is no way to program a system to anticipate something like Chad Dicknuts driving onto the wrong side of the road to get into the intersection turn-box because he's better than you. ( saw that last week. )

Had some beers from Prairie Brewers, a new local microbrew outfit. Quite nice, they were. As were the boobehs on the waitresses, who all seem to single mothers. The prime rib and three beers set me back $51, which is about par for that sort of thing around here. And the prime rib was very good, too.

473 Don Q-

Regrets are negative feelings about your own actions. You can't "regret" things done to you by others, or by life itself.

That being said, I agree that the opening quote is simplistic and unrealistic. Regrets can be positive if they move you towards self-improvement. Regret is closely related to having a conscience. A person without regrets just might be a sociopath.

OTOH, at some point you have to move on, forgive yourself, and not wallow in the past.

And soon thereafter, 95% of all consumer-miles traveled will be via these things.

Big companies, will own the fleets. When you need a ride somewhere, you just pull out your smart phone and request one.

Your brain develops in the womb, and the primitive brain first forms it's sensory capabilities and reactions to stimulus. During your initial wiring, your twin was present and intimately intertwined with your own development. Your twin is pretty solidly imprinted on your subconscious. Your brain has been looking for its brain-mate. In fact, it has been grieving since the loss. And it's down there really deep. Grief processed in the frontal cortex that develops when we are older can process grief more effectively because of advanced emotions, intellectual development and raw processing power. The amygdala and primitive brain aren't built for that. Pretty much like a computer operating system has a basic kernel that, if corrupted in a fundamental way, will affect the way programs and i/o are handled. Grif is built into your brain's operating kernel.

Saskatoon is a decent small city. Much nicer than Regina, the capital of Saskatchewan.

Saskatoons are berries, that grow on bushes found all over the prairies. Kind of like a dry, pulpy blueberry, and one of the essential ingredients to pemmican. They make nice jam and pies, but are not great to eat right off the bush, IMHO.

637 Bathroom noise reminds me of a couple of funny stories that still make me laugh so hard I just about pee myself.

Neighbor lady's story. She in a bathroom at some shopping center, mall. Big public one with a long line of stalls. Terrible resonating acoustics. She's in the end stall, and no one else is in there. Two chatting biddies, she says, constantly jabbering. come in. Yak, yak, yak, yak.... The each go into a stall, and one keeps yakking the whole time. The other is occupied and stops yakking a bit.

She, uh makes a huge, explosive expulsion type noise. The commode serves as sort of a bull horn, and the bathroom design, long room with hard tile floor and walls, low ceiling, is a resonance chamber for those frequencies.

The sound resonates and rattles the cages.

The other lady, who has been yakking at the one who just made the noise, stops and says, "Wooo eee, you *did* have to go!" And then just continues the previous stuff she was yakking about.

Neighbor lady said she almost laughed out loud, and had to literally cover her mouth to keep from laughing.

The Doctress Neutoptia was (is) a hippie commie whacko who would hang out on usenet trying to "imagine" a society where everyone would just lie around in magic giant cities and make love. Who would pay for this was.... not well-explored.

I just checked, she's on facecrook now. Did Not Look Closer. She was like a fourt-tier academic back in the early 90s, no idea what she does for bread and water now.

662 The other bathroom story involved a great-aunt of mine. Aunt Laura. She was a card. A character. One of a kind. I ought to write done some of her antics. Anyway, I was a kid, maybe 10 or thereabouts. It was family dinner at our house, for Thanksgiving or some other holiday.

I had gone in my room, which was right across from a bathroom. Aunt Laura comes down the hall to use the bathroom. She didn't know I was anywhere around. Somehow, the sound carried where I could hear every sound in that bathroom lying on my bed.

She had a habit of humming this annoying little tune all the time. It was some sort of silly little tune, sort of like Laurel Hardy's tune. It makes you think of some idiot doing something stupid. Hmmm, hummm-humm, dah, dah da da.

Well, she was humming that stupid tune as she went in and sat down on the terlet. She was getting older, and was not a small woman. She had to sort of strain to lower herself. She was humming, and that became a grunint sort of "uhh, uhhh, whup, whup.....Ahhhhh." Then the humming started again.

It was interrupted by the sound of a water stream hitting the water in the bowl, at which point she stopped humming the tune, and went "Weeeeeee!"

I still laugh at the recollection, 40 years ago.

I did play the first graphical MMO, Neverwinter Nights, though only during the free periods (that was not cheap, even then).

I think I'm gonna to start to get that pump off tomorrow. Of itself, it's no trouble, but you've got to tear the front of the little tractor off to get to the plate on the front of the engine. It's so tight between that and the fan, you can't get in there.

There was a neigbor who had to rebuild the pump on of his a while back, similar, a Ford 3000.

The timing is done with marks on gears. A gear on the crankshaft drives the gear on the pump and also the camshaft. The crankshaft turns 2 revolutions for every one of the pump and camshaft gear. So when you take it off, you need to make sure the marks are aligned. If you don't, you have to open it up and make sure the camshaft is on mark as well.

This neighbor didn't think to do that. When they got the pump back, they just aligned up the marks on the crank gear. The camshaft gear was not aligned. The crank needed to turn one complete revolution again.

They got it back together and cranked and cranked, with raw fuel mist finally coming out of the exhaust.

They couldn't figure it out (reading a manual would've explained it in about 1 minute) and finally called the mechanic at the Ford place. He explained it. I still don't think they understood it but they followed his instructions to take the cam cover off and align the marks on the cam gear together with those on the pump gear.
