Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Nieman Marcus Will Sell You a "Destroyed" -- Artificially Distressed to the Point of Being Nonfunctional -- Sneaker, And They'll Do It for the Low, Low Price of One Thousand Four Hundred and Twenty Five DollarsUS dollars, not some debased kind of dollar like Esperanto Bucks. We're not done with this trend yet: Neiman Marcus is currently selling battered and ripped sneakers for $1,425. At first glance, these look ripe for as much mockery as those $425 mud-stained jeans. But if you believe in fashion as art, you can also follow the argument that there's something a little more legitimate about the Maison Margiela Future Destroyed High-Top Sneaker. The white sneakers appear to have been slashed with a knife, so that bright yellow inner stuffing shows through. They’re covered with staples, as if someone survived a tiger attacked at the office and then used whatever was nearby to keep their shoes on their feet. These are not shoes pre-dirtied to approximate blue-collar style, however. These are gleaming throwbacks to Martin Margiela's deconstructionist work of the 1980s, inspired in part by the work of Rei Kawakubo's Comme des Garcons. "It's a far more edgy answer to Golden Goose’s ‘Distressed Superstar Sneakers' that featured scuff marks, ripped laces and duct-tape reinforcements," Footwear News wrote of the Future Destroyed kicks. Those Golden Goose shoes, which first came out in 2015, were meant to be a reaction to the "brand new, fresh-out-of-the-box sparkling white sneakers" that dominated the market, Net-a-Porter Vice President of Global Buying Sarah Rutson told Yahoo Style at the time. But they received quite a backlash for looking a lot like the shoes of someone who couldn’t afford to buy any new shoes, let alone a $400 pair.Four hundred a pair? Pshah. Only grubby poor people would buy those. Here's what that deeply stupid footwear looks like. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Usually, to find a shitty off-brand stupid-looking sneaker that's all cut up and stapled, you'd need to spend $12 on the sort of no-name sneaker they usually only give to refugee children, plus a knife and a stapler.

Rows using 85 lbs dumbbell last set of 7 up from 60. Pull-ups and chin ups only using 30 lbs spot down from 70. Dips no spot down from 20 lbs Made up a Murph type workout to do on my arms days 3 times a week. 2-4 miles walking and every 100 yards a set of 20 squats and next 100 a set of 20'pushups. Vans when they still had the narrow stripe were very comfortable shoes. I'm guessing it was somewhere around the time when I didn't have to call or mail order to get them anymore that they didn't seem to be as well made.

Needed new boots, and during a recent ski trip (staying in Reno) went into Scheel's late on afternoon to kill time/look around. Boss convinced me to check out the boot offerings.
Sales clerk turned out to be very knowledgeable about footwear (said the company had sent her to a "foot geek conference" where they had engineers, designers, etc. learnin' them about shoe design). She was great. Walked out wearing some new Keene boots. Very pleased. Same store where, a few years ago on another ski trip, I went in to look around and found a young clerk in the gun section with the last name Earp. I asked. Yep, he was a relative/descendant of the famous US marshals. Which was a nice touch at a gun section of a store, in the west. Posted by: rhomboid at May 05, 2017 09:42 PM (vP09u) 273

My wife has taken to knitting baby booties, and just
for kicks she did a pair in black with a red bottom. I think they're kinda cute(ish), but I'm a guy, whadda I know. Oh and they have like a knit clasp that goes across the front so it looks more like a show than a bootie. She was thinking baby LaBootiens,, or sompin. Sound like she's onto something? Posted by: OneEyedJack at May 05, 2017 10:00 PM (z79tQ) I would have bought something like that. Posted by: redbanzai at May 05, 2017 10:02 PM (FTXAT) 310
These shoes and those "muddy" pants are like the $100 hamburgers some restaurants brag about selling that I see on the news sometimes. Nobody ever buys them, but it gets somebody a lot of attention and free advertisement. The best thing for everybody to do is just ignore this stuff and not play along.

Scams work because it doesn't take many suckers for the scam to pay off.
