Survey Finds, Shockingly, that Progressives are the Least Tolerant Group on College Campuses

Most of them would be very offended to have to share a room with someone who's political beliefs didn't coincide with their own.

This reminds me of a point I think is worth making:

Conservatives used to speak of "moral relativism" derisively, and sometimes still do. However, the bulk of conservative argumentation is actually about tolerant inclusive pluralism -- because they merely want to voice dissident opinions (dissident, though often having firm majority support in the public) without being legally or economically punished for it.

Meanwhile, progressives continue to laughingly speak of pluralism, tolerance, inclusivity -- the idea that their are "many truths," and some things may seem true to you depending on where you stand -- while in fact pushing a coercive totalitarian line that exactly One truth is true, and all other are not only false, but punishable through extra-legal social justice, which may involve some phonied up charges laid against you, or a college kangaroo court, or mace in the face, or a coordinated political campaign to deprive you of your livelihood.

This is strange. People should know what they are really arguing for.

40 I was pretty conservative in my college days. I didn't really realize how conservative, to tell you the truth. I hit it off with my super libby roommate. We were roommates for all 4 years of college and remained friends through our 30s. Then it kind of all fell apart when she went off the deep end (politically). So we are now not really friends any longer.

However, I do think I was more tolerant of diverse viewpoints in college. I didn't have my own ideas 100% in place. As I got older, those view solidified...especially after having children.

I did not mind being in the same room with a liberal. We mostly talked about our families, boys, and classes. We did not have in depth discussions about our political views.

I actually avoided taking philosophy b/c I knew I would be surrounded by liberal jerks. Not for me.

Anyway, I don't see why someone's politics would interfere with being roommates. Sad that these kids are afraid of making a good friend.

The left is mentally ill.
The two driving factors behind their behavior is narcissism and pathological denial of reality.

Their narcissism is what drives their hatred of those who dare to try and inject reality into their world. For if they are wrong then they are not the moral and intellectual superior beings of goodness and light they want to believe they are.
This extreme need leads to the pathological denial of reality. Anythning that does not fit their desire, does not exist or is a lie.

102 ace, that is very well put. I'm mad at you for stating it better than I ever have.

Bingo bango. Tolerance, by the nature of the concept, requires that what you are tolerating be something with which you disagree. If you agree with it, there's nothing to tolerate.

It's interesting, donuts to dollars the Left would assume that we are all a bunch of intolerant bigots who march in lockstep on all issues. Look at the actual comments. We yell at each other all the time about stuff but we tolerate, as in do not demand expulsion into the Void, let alone the Barrel, all types of views here. Hell, we even let Yankees fans have their stupid, stupid, stupid say.

Tolerance is all the stuff that we type and delete before clicking the post button because, get this, other people are allowed to express their horrifically wrong ideas in public.

I even have to throw some blame at the supposed "pure" conservatives that were only going to accept full repeal and nothing else.

We have a Congressman here that basically took that line and is voting "no" on the latest round. I have to think it's just an easy cop out that protects him politically.

If I had my way, it would be full repeal, but once millions were on this thing, common sense tells you some sort of orderly draw down was necessary.

I'd love to just have Congress vote on full repeal and have something like a 2 year window. It would probably fail in the House, but I want these Republicans on the record.

187 Most of the very strident leftists/progressives that I see strike me as the social misfits from high school. And once they get into a position of power, they are bound and determined to punish every person who reminds them of those who they think were mean to them when they were younger.

Since I've been in a really reflective place lately, I'll cop to this.

Some years ago I was hiring and the bully from my high school had applied. First I heard about it was being scheduled to do the interview after the HR phone screen and all of that. He came to the building, went through two rounds of interviews and I was the last one. I introduced myself, he introduced himself, and I said "oh, are you such and such from Westy high school?" He said yes, then looked at my card, and the realization came over his face.

I didn't hire him, and I won't bullshit everyone and say it was entirely aboveboard. I had my bias and, truth be told, relished being the power broker for a change.

In hindsight, while I don't think he had the qualifications I wonder how much of that was me trying to justify my little power trip and how much was an honest evaluation. It did lay some things clear to me about myself though, and I hope I haven't been victim to those urges again.

205 You can hold any "truth" you wish to hold, as long as it comports with narrative. "Cops are all racists". "Red states are all on welfare". etc. The individual "truths" are the statements of varying actual truthfulness that matter to this or that interest group, even if they conflict, because they are "stories" that fit into narrative. It is absolutely relativism, within an agreed frame.

Narrative itself is based on premises which nobody is allowed to question, even if they are wrong - mostly because the core-most principles are unchanging and more or less impossible to falsify. "Man" is good or at least perfectible, but individuals (due to this or that corruption) are Evil. Evil is rooted in failure to harmonize with Progress. Progress is natural and will continue as men become Man, evolutionarily, and any failures are failures to commune correctly with the Whole of Man or to articulate Progress as Progress Must Be.

Their aim is that you *believe* these things, even if you can't articulate them - and vast numbers of people do! Any stories, therefore, that fit within this artificial emotional "truth", are true, even if contradictory, because they tell a story about the Progress of Man and those who are Evil. The Progressive all-encompassing weltanschauung.

Any stories outside this frame, even if factually 100% correct, or even if mostly in agreement with the accepted truth, are *emotionally* untrue, and the starkest blasphemy.

She described her three kids having an argument at the dinner table, which led to her asking each child to describe what free speech meant to them.

The twelve year old went into a textbook definition that included a tutorial on the Bill of Rights, etc.

The nine year old said there should never be restrictions on *anything* that *anybody* says, *anytime,* *anywhere.*

The five year old said, "Free speech is that you can say what you want -- as long as I like it."

That was when Strassel realized her oldest was "a constitutional conservative, my middle child a libertarian, and my youngest a socialist with totalitarian tendencies."

They didn't lose, they got their asses kicked. They outnumbered the Poles significantly, but because the SU Army was being led mostly by party members who had no command experience, when they ran into stiff opposition at the Battle of Warsaw, unexpectedly they lost. The Poles started chasing them back into the SU and the SU sued for peace. Another reason why the SU was willing to enter into the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, a chance for revenge.

227 Speaking of getting fired from your job for speaking that idiot Jeff Varner on Survivor who "outed" the woman pretending to man (Zeke Smith) and got votes out without a formal vote lost his job even though he apologized profusely saying "outing a trans is the same as assault" and he "wasn't in his right mind due to conditions out there" (basically pleading temporary insanity to NORMALIZE a woman who thinks she's a man ).
Yet Stephen Colbert is still employed.
We need to stop worrying about being able to express ourselves without losing our jobs and instead go twice as hard at these lunatics, i.e., they send one of ours to the hospital we send 2 of there's to the morgue.

233 I just finished watching a documentary about John Paul II. There was much discussion about the foundation of the Solidarity movement. His going there as Pope in 1978 started the movement.

The Communists always try to isolate people and through their media and propaganda make you feel alone, as if you're the only one who has an opinion contrary to theirs. When the Pope came to Poland and millions upon millions came out to see him, there was this sudden realization in the country for each person, that they were NOT alone and that together they could enact change. They suddenly realized there were living a big lie and were trapped in it.

The other thing he was hot on was that cultural and moral foundations are what makes a democratic country. That to have communism you must deny the cultural and moral foundation. THAT'S why the left is so intent on cultural shifts, so that they can destroy that and not have a cultural or moral ethos. THAT is where the islamists come in.

The first thing the soviets did when they took over a country was to hire kindergarten teachers.

The left isn't interested in tolerance. It's interested in cultural shifts which is why what they do when paying lip service to "tolerance" makes no sense.

236 Trumps tweets really are alarming, the ones the last day or two on the budget situation.

If he really thinks a "shut-down in September to fix this mess" is what the country needs, he doesn't understand politics or the appropriations process.

There is zero chance a "shut-down" in the fall would be politically easier or more well-timed than one now. The election will be more distant, there is no telling what other events will have intervened and how they will affect the political situation.

Substantively, if regular order is restored (separate approps bills for different govt. functions), there *will be no "shut-down" scenario anyway*. There will only be "shut-down" scams relating to particular govt. functions.

But worst of all is the *apparent* continuing acceptance of this idiotic Dem veto on anything based on a "shut-down". There have been many mini-shut-downs the last 40 years, most of which barely garnered any attention. Not a single one ever resulted in any particular political benefit/damage to either side (notwithstanding the absurd, relentless mythology about the mid-90s).

As was obvious since the Cruz filibuster in '13, the "shut-down" thing is 1) actually taken seriously, as a unique GOP risk, by many otherwise sensible observers 2) desperately embraced by GOP incumbents, most of them in gerrymandered safe districts where they depend on the cluelessness of their reliable voters 3) celebrated by the Dems, who probably can barely believe that despite their national electoral collapse they maintain a virtual veto over issues on which that collapse was based.

"Counting all the assholes in the room

Well that's just like me yoohoo and I know you too"

As a conservative, that's how I see other people. The same as me because we are all sinners, and I'm willing to sit in the same room with them.

I expect people to be assholes and have different opinions than me and would never be offended enough to leave a room just because someone had a different opinion.

I'm reading a book "Paris In the Terror" right now which is quite riverting. There were plenty of French like Lafayette who admired the American revolution and thought that that is what they were getting. Lafayette hero-worshipped Washington and probably wanted to be the French Washington himself.

The radicals - Marat and Robespierre - kept pulling the Revolution further and further to the left, so yesterday's revolutionaries became today's reactionaries. There were Girondians who wanted a fair trial for Louis XVI and a public referendum on whether he should be executed. The Jacobins nixed it because they knew the French people as a whole would not vote for the King's execution - and might even conceivably want him restored to the throne.

Charlotte Corday initially welcomed the Revolution. Her horror of the bloodshed that came after, much of it caused by Marat, made her a "traitor to the Revolution."

All subsequent leftwing revolutions have followed the French one.

You see, said the Hindu elder, there are many truths and many paths to enlightenment. One must accept all things as truth to become enlightened.
I still disagree, but please proceed, said Ravi.
What is truth for me may not be truth for another soul and vice versa. Don't you see? Your truth exists AND my truth exist. Unfortunately, you must alter your world view to become fully enlightened.
To which Ravi replied, so you posit the truth of the matter is that EITHER I am right and the world has black and white truths OR I am wrong and it doesn't!

One other thing with that. Lefties like to say that the Soviets only became aggressive during the Cold War because the rest of the world was arrayed against them. Problem is, from the very moment the Bolsheviks took power in the October coup (Revolution my ass), they started aggressively subverting neighboring states, sometimes with invasions like Poland and Ukraine, other times instigating violence resulting in civil war like in Finland during the same time frame.

From what I understand (and my understanding of that era is woefully incomplete, so correct me if I'm wrong here), Lenin was the aggressive one, internationally speaking. Once Stalin took over, the focus of Soviet repression and violence was largely pointed inward to domestic enemies.

@LASue -- honestly I don't care if an adult (not children) man or woman
wants to pretend to be the opposite sex, gets hormones/surgery, etc.

But I do draw the line at being told I have to play along with their
delusions and that my taxes should foot the bill for their
"transitions"

Now, otoh, I would be willing to kick in for some psycho-therapy to
help them fight their delusions and accept they are what their DNA
dictates they are and why they "hate Science" so much.

315 Greetings:

One of the many things that my father inflicted on me, mostly through repetition, was the idea that you learn a lot more with your eyes and ears open and your mouth shut than otherwise.

As a culture, we seem to have lost the concept of "keeping one's own counsel" from "a gentleman never tells" to "especially an infantryman never tells".

Too many people nowadays have been seduced by microphones, cameras, or just crowds to exercise any level of adult supervision on their own mouths.

I fear that this is a genie that will not be put back into its lamp.

318 While self loathing seems to be behind a lot of what the left pushes, I no longer think it is the case. You see, in order to show how moral and selfless they are they prostrate themselves before Islamic fascists, etc.
The left is quite competitive with each other and even if what they propose is degrading, it only shows how "down" they are and better than the average leftist. In fact, they don't see it as degrading at all. They see it as justice, blah, blah, blah. Again, narcissim.

Posted by: Tilikum KAW at May 03, 2017 01:22 PM (+aCe4)

319 Ace, I don't think it's really a contradiction as much as it is a difference in perspective (and possibly/likely maturity).

I'm very conservative and I believe that there are objective truths and they can be known. I would even take it a step further and say that I think right-thinking people should hold similar beliefs to mine.

However, I am realistic enough to foresee a time when my viewpoint could be severely culturally disfavored or in an extreme minority and end up suffering persecution due to those factors. So I favor pluralism, partially because my own world-view teaches that people should choose to do and believe right and good (which inherently means they will and probably should have the ability to choose and do wrong), and partially because I'd like there to remain a space where I can voice my views without persecution, which means we have to allow others to do the same.

The speech-killing lefties, on the other hand want pluralism and free speech only as far as it allows them to air their own views and, despite all their whinging about microagressions and persecution for being "different," apparently can't ever foresee a situation wherein their ideas and opinions might be on the outs and need that protection, and thus are unwilling to extend those courtesies to anyone else.

Plus, even though they like to claim the mantle of free-thought, they're just as conformist as they people they decry, and honestly very militantly so. Which is why you end up with these idjits eating their own over whatever the offense du jour is.

Posted by: aelfheld at May 03, 2017 01:46 PM (IxDhF)

322 The problem with this is that the left does not believe "that exactly One truth is true" at all. They do believe that there are many truths, but in the sense that there really isn't such a thing as truth at all. There is actually only consensus; and breaking with the current consensus is treason. They really do buy postmodern pragmatism, insofar as they think at all.

I still remember when I was a teenager, reading some book from the early days of the US, and the writer was defining tolerance and so forth. Then, in the middle of the explanation, he dropped "but one need not tolerate Catholics". I checked in with my teacher after class (I was reading ahead), and found out that yeah, the whole tolerance thing was being worked out!

Nowadays believers can differ so much from each other (recently heard a discussion between Mormons and Pentacostals), but they tolerate each other while disagreeing. Religions are supposed to be divisive and anti-intellectual, but the so-called open-minded "liberal" people want to shut down everyone outside their belief-system and turn into petty dictators as soon as they get the slightest power
