And Yet, I Persisted (MJ)

Back in the late 90s, when I was in high school I wrote a letter to President Clinton.

I never got a response.

And in case you're wondering, Nichole West got pink eye once.

Then she dumped me.

Best Sadie Hawkins dance, ever. Go Screaming Eagles!!!

39 Okay, question - because Book Thread is earlier and I didn't report on books I've been reading this week.

I mentioned earlier this week that Clark Ashton Smith's "City of the Singing Flame" was his "Nightfall". "Nightfall" is a famous story by Isaac Asimov. It has these characteristics:
* Short
* Good - as in, really really good, it'll be talked about in any context of this author's work
* Early in the career (not necessarily first published, or even first good published - Asimov had done "Marooned Off Vesta" beforehand, which still holds up)
* Definitive of the author's work: in Asimov's case, science as a guide to human life (successful or not); in Smith's, the allure of oblivion

Can we think of any other Nightfalls in other famous authors' work? Like, what's Robert Howard's? Arthur C Clarke's? I'm not sure about HP Lovecraft but maybe Rats In The Walls or From Beyond.

While i'm expostulating completely bunk theories about the universe for free, here's another one for y'all:

I've always had a hunch that the whole shooting a pistol sideways thing came about something like this:

"Gansta" hip hop artists wanted to look tough in music videos, movies, etc. Yet said tough-guys never actually fired a live round in their life. In order to "spice it up" for the camera, they held the gun sideways. No rounds were actually fired, so what the hell. Roll with it.

Then, the actual gangsters who actually shoot actual people with actual guns, who also idolize the above mentioned artists as authentic somehow, felt the need to emulate this silly behavior. For authenticity, you know. So by necessity, they grew accustomed to firing effectively in that manner, at least up close (

Or, you know, people are just feckin' stupid. There's always that theory.

134 Now let's not be slandering the good citizens of Chicago (or at least the ones using their shootin' irons).

According to heyjackass.com, the current ratio of killed/wounded is 1/5.

Yeah, yeah, I know, 1/2 or 1/3 is more common in modern warfare.

But that's almost entirely due to artillery, which does most of the killin'. As our distinguished fellow citizens currently shooting up parts of Chicago lack access to artillery (oppression! denial of opportunity!), the less lethal ratio is understandable. And, of course, the quality of and quick access to medical care, vs. a battlefield.

So please folks, let's keep things in perspective.
