Cultural Appropriation: For $425, Nordstrom's Will Sell You Distressed Jeans Splattered With Fake Washer-Safe Mud So You Can Play Dress-Up as Someone From the Outdoors-Working Class

From Mike Rowe, who gives the post a title that really can't be improved, Jeans Made to Look Like You Work Hard So You Don't Have To.

More and more of life seems to be nothing but artifice. The carefully-curated presentation of oneself on Instagram and FaceBook and Twitter, always eating a luxe restaurants and always taking selfies at exciting places.

Rock-climbed exactly once in your entire life? Perfect-- make that your avatar on Tinder.

Why not take that Life of Illusion into meatspace and just begin playing dress-up as something you are not?

Finally -- a pair of jeans that look like they have been worn by someone with a dirty job…made for people who don’t. And you can have your very own pair for just $425.00.

Here’s the official description, from their website.

"These heavily distressed medium-blue denim jeans embody rugged, Americana workwear that’s seen some hard-working action with a crackled, caked-on muddy coating that shows you’re not afraid to get down and dirty."

On the positive side, Nordstrom's isn't purging their shelves of work-related imagery, like the owners of Monopoly did when they replaced the wheelbarrow with a rubber ducky. They seem to value icons work. What they don't value -- obviously -- is authenticity.

...

Not real mud. Fake mud. Something to foster the illusion of work. The illusion of effort. Or perhaps, for those who actually buy them, the illusion of sanity.

The Barracuda Straight Leg Jeans aren't pants. They're not even fashion. They're a costume for wealthy people who see work as ironic -- not iconic.

Rowe's write up is pretty much spot on, but I have to find something to add or disagree with, so I'll pick this nit: While I agree with him 99.9%, I'd point out that fashion has always kind of been about costuming, signalling, and aspiration. That's not new.

A lot of the "athletic clothing" purchased in America is by people who are decidedly not athletic. When a very heavy boy buys really expensive sneakers, yeah, it's dress up in a way. But it's also him putting on the mask of what he wants to be.

As Mike Rowe says, the one good thing is that hard work isn't being denigrated here, but valorized: Something worth... well not doing, but something worth dressing up as if you do.

And if I'm being honest, mudded-up jeans do look pretty good. Pretty much because whenever I see them it's a movie I'm watching and the Muscular Leading Man just managed to save a rogue cow from stampeding off a canyon edge by wrestling it by its horns into the muddy earth. (See, it's raining like hell out and there are lightning flashes because of course there must be.)

However, there used to sort of be a rule that you can't just totally play dress-up. If you bought a BUM sweatshirt, you had to go to the gym at least once or twice. You can't just wear a leather back brace around like an Olympic weightlifter for fashion if you don't ever actually lift.

Do you even mud, bro?

The falling of this rule -- that you must attempt some semblance of what you pretend to be -- is probably now permitted by endless Brand Creation that everyday people do for themselves on the internet, plus the odd and new proposition that anyone is whatever they claim to be, whatever sex they claim, whatever race.

If you can believe this -- some people on the internet will claim sometimes be 28 years old, when they're actually rather older than that. (Going on 29 pretty soon, in my case.)

But we seem to be crossing a Rubicon of Reality here where you can now play dress-up with expensively faux-muddied clothing to look like a humble cowhand.

I suppose it would be easy enough to adapt Second Skin -- make it thicker, add a yellow tint -- to begin painting on Fake Callouses every morning to Steal the Look from a real cowboy.

Anyway, this is where we are, this is who we are now.

The watchword is decadence. Fashion I don't mind, and I recognize there's an element of play and fantasy in many higher-end fashions. I always want a pea coat, partly because of its association with merchant marines, but always feel like it would be dress-up and I can't get one. Same with army-style jackets.

Yeah, I like the look, but I don't want to separate myself that far from the real world.

This complete divorce from vital, primal physical reality, and this retreat in a child's playground of Let's Pretend, seems to me to very decadence of a very advanced type.

Now I'm going to take my messenger bag and go deliver some very important military orders to my commander at Starbucks. With your kind leave, Sir.

BTW: I'm aware there's bigger and newer news. Some of it makes me so angry I really need to process it so I can express myself in something other than curses (and worse).

3 As President Trump's top advisers prepare to hash out a final policy on the Paris climate agreement dumped onto their laps by President Obama, another option has hit the table: Declare the deal a treaty and send it to the Senate to be killed.

Under their vision, Mr. Trump could toss out Mr. Obama's decision that the Paris accord was an executive agreement, declare it a treaty and send it to the Senate, where it would need a two-thirds vote for ratification.

Which is why I have no problem with this.

Because most of my jeans (well, I usually wear Carhartts and Dickies) are torn and mud / grease stained.

So now I'm fashionable. Maybe people will think I spent $425 on my dirty pants, not that I spent $15 at Kohl's, then, you know, worked in them.

47 Yeah, anything but a uniform IS a sort of costume.
We're making a statement about who we are with everything we put on.

I prefer logo-less clothes for that very reason but I do have my 'business casual' clothes and my blue jeans and tee shirts. For a long time, I wore nothing but black. Made color coordinating easier. But I was told that was 'too intimidating' in a work environment, so I made an effort to buy and wear bright colored shirts.

My 'see? I'm harmless and certainly don't have lethal weapons in arms reach at all times' costume.

Name that Quote:

It is, he says, a manifestation of "the modern trend toward undifferentiated dressing, in which we all strive to look equally shabby." Denim reflects "our most nostalgic and destructive agrarian longings -- the ones that prompted all those exurban McMansions now sliding off their manicured lawns and into foreclosure." Jeans come prewashed and acid-treated to make them look like what they are not -- authentic work clothes for horny-handed sons of toil and the soil. Denim on the bourgeoisie is, Akst says, the wardrobe equivalent of driving a Hummer to a Whole Foods store -- discordant.

95 And yes, there's an aspect of play/make believe in all sorts of clothing styles. If you're wearing a fedora and you're not Philip Marlowe, for instance - or wearing a bomber jacket if the closest you ever got to the military was melting GI Joe with a magnifying glass.

I think this is a step beyond those because:

A. The price. Complaining about jeans being too expensive is a bit played out, but $425 bucks?

B. Fake mud? Really? Again, as another commenter noted, riffing on pre-tattered jeans is a hack comic trope, but seriously...fake mud? What the actual fuck.

C. Pretending to be an average workin' man just seems gauche. Adults wearing sports jerseys may be a tad pathetic to some, but at least that's aspiring to be something most of us can't be. Same with the fedora-and-spats private eye look - most of us can't actually be Sam Spade. If you want to be a manual laborer, *get a fucking job doing manual labor*.

http://wapo.st/1kX85ki

This is not complicated. For men, sartorial good taste can be reduced to one rule: If Fred Astaire would not have worn it, don't wear it. For women, substitute Grace Kelly.

Edmund Burke -- what he would have thought of the denimization of America can be inferred from his lament that the French Revolution assaulted "the decent drapery of life"; it is a straight line from the fall of the Bastille to the rise of denim -- said: "To make us love our country, our country ought to be lovely." Ours would be much more so if supposed grown-ups would heed St. Paul's first letter to the Corinthians, and St. Barack's inaugural sermon to the Americans, by putting away childish things, starting with denim.

I saw an article about a town in Africa where they spend every dime they make on fancy duds. It's a thing, there. Live in a hovel, and wear a $1000 suit costing a year's wages. mmmmkay.

And then you have much richer people 'dressing down' like with these jeans, or like rock stars with their invariably ripped and torn clothing. There's such a demand the manufacturers invented 'stone washed' jeans to simulate the look. Whereas in the past, poor people would patch their worn clothing as they couldn't afford to replace it, but wanted it to look maintained.

about my work, when I worked in the city, and I still have my favorite shirt. I had to wear, REAL business casual while throwing wrenches and grease up to my elbows, long sleeve button downs and shit, and I showed her my "favorite" shirt.

It's a fucking mess. just COVERED in grease because I'm electronics, but most of my work at the time was mechanical, so while I'm also mechanical, I wasn't gear oriented, and there was something that we all did to the new guys. most of the gear I worked on back then had a single central contained, Axle really, just a long ass pip with a bunch of bearing inside it, and it was all contained, every 2 years we had to push the grease out of it, but in general we had to make sure it was propperly packed with axle grease, I think they were called hydrostatic? The shaft actually rode on the grease, not the bearing itself right?

Well, because it was encased, all contained, the grease didn't go anywhere, we only had to PM it for cook out(when grease looses it's viscoscity or granulates) so like a tiny TING little squeeze. Well, I was the new guy, and I got joked. . . . "I don't think you have enough" as I'm pumping black axle grease into this enclosed environment (you can't compress a liquid) so I just kept pumping it into the zerk fitting, and then I remeoved the fitting from the nipple, and I got splattered with grease.

FUNNY! for a fixer, embarassing, but funny, and that is my favorite shirt. Because it saw work.

Also, I used to climb rocks every single day after work, and I have ONE picture of me climbing a rock, why only one if I climbed so much and so often? Because I was too fucking busy climbing the fucking rock to think about scaling out a panoramic.

Sexy Lenin, e-smoking Stalin, and Marx the Terminator

The Russian Communist Party is sexing up its election campaign with Photoshopped posters depicting the Bolshevik leader, Lenin, as a young stud with a red laptop, a communist t-shirt, blue jeans, and a hot babe by his side. Then there's a Photoshopped picture of Stalin sucking on a red advanced personal vaporizer, or MOD (a type of e-cigarette for you non-smokers), with a caption, "Modernize, comrades!" There's also a leather-clad Karl Marx carrying a volume of Das Kapital (spelled in English for some reason as "Capital") and saying the Terminator's line, "I'll be back," also in English.

241 I think Ace may have read the story about Portland being Portland.

So they apparently have this long "Festival of Roses" coming up. There's a para(one of a few, apparently) that had as entry 66 or so, the Mnultah county Republican party. I probably spelled it wrong.

So allegedly some antifa protestors sent in a letter to the city claiming that they were going to haul out the Republicans marching and beat them senseless because of their crimes against the LGBT crowd.

Result: the city canceled the parade. Thus teaching the lesson that all you have to do to thwart Republicans is merely threaten violence, and the city will quash them.

See Althouse for some of the details.

The rest of the crew would bitch that we were the only ones allowed to wear them.

But as the CO said, you want to wear the hat?

One of the funny things about getting older (as in, not really funny at all), is watching professional athletes get younger and younger.

I remember when I was young enough to think pro ball players were men. Doing men things. Like being on tv, playing a sport.

Now I look at these guys, and they're just kids. Even the grizzled old veterans, the ones lucky enough to still be playing into their late 30s/early 40s, they're really still just kids. Boys.

So.. yeah, boys play dressup. You wear a polyester uniform, with your name splashed on the back, some city's name/logo on the front, and you're playing a kid's game.

The beards are just part of that. Pretending to be men, and still being little boys.

312 Yeah, I'm really cheesed off by this and the Berkley Coulter event being called off.

They want a fight, let's give it to them.

Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards

The event is still happening -- but just without Coulter. Also, the location has been moved to Provo Park (near downtown) instead of on campus.

Not stolen valor, but a guy on the bus the other day had one of
those jackets with twenty or so military patches on them - different
units, different services. It was interesting for me to ID the units,
but I don't think he had a clue who they were.

Posted by: Banana Splits Guy at April 27, 2017 01:21 PM (CYch+)"

It might not be stolen valor, actually likely not. A coworker is a biker in an open club, and he has a thousand "3%" acknowledgements, but he also has a tag that says, something like "It's not me but I'm proud." I guess that is a thing with some people, though he was navy in wartime.

317 I always want a pea coat, partly because of its association with merchant marines, but always feel like it would be dress-up and I can't get one. Same with army-style jackets. -ace-

Get one! They are fantastic! They look good and are really warm, which comes in handy in NYC 4 months of the year.
Mine is a decade old, still looks good. Get a real wool one, not a fashion jacket. You won't regret it and you won't look like you're in costume unless you get the cap and fishermans sweater to go with it. Even that's not a bad look, as costumes go.

I'd like to wear a cowboy hat, but I don't have a horse or any cattle, boots, and I am not a particularly capable rider. Me and the horse get along fine, but that's about it. I don't want to look phony but I really like how a good comfortable stetson looks.

She's not wrong. I don't give a crap about the wall, I think its dumb and kind of an ugly symbol, but its also symbolic of the government's commitment to border security and whether they are listening to the public or not. Its a question of leadership and representation. People want that wall, they want Obamacare gone, and they want government to listen to them for once. The GOP has a chance here to step up.

So far all I know is:

The dude named "Gavin McInnes" from "The Proud Boys" -- a semi-satirical alt-right group that's part improv comedy troupe and part street-fightin' army -- along with sex-bomb alt-babe Brittany Pettibone and a few other conservative "citizen journalist" stars, have apparently gotten the text of Ann Coulter's speech, and will read it at Civic Center Park (more commonly known by its nickname, Provo Park) at Allston and MLK near downtown Berkeley at 2pm today (the same place where the previous two riots happened).

They said "We WILL read the speech, and no one is going top stop us, period."

It remains to be seen if Antifa will show up and take the challenge.

From what I can tell, BAMN will indeed be there -- but BAMN is a smaller group, who generally DON'T mask up, and are a slightly older demographic -- but no less violent (in fact, are potentially more violent, as their philosophy approves of killing to induce revolution).

The "problem" is that BAMN almost certainly could not generate enough number of attendees to even come close to challenging the alt-right types who are already in town. And without Antifa to back them up, BAMN may simply stand down and taunt from the sidelines.

I suspect the whole even will actually be much smaller than the April 15 event, because:

-- Antifa may be too scared to volunteer to get their asses kicked once again; and
-- The alt-right are more likely to have jobs and be from out of town, and so couldn't show up in Berkeley on a moment's notice for a rumble.

Could be a big fizzle.

Anyway, even from afar, the current status is easily seen: several helicopters (police and media) already circling over Berkeley in anticipation of the possible fracas.

The squat rack or platform should not look like a drug bust just went down. I've been able to chalk up everywhere including gyms where it's banned because I chalk up conservatively. 481 From what I can tell, BAMN will indeed be there -- but BAMN is a smaller group, who generally DON'T mask up, and are a slightly older demographic -- but no less violent (in fact, are potentially more violent, as their philosophy approves of killing to induce revolution).

Posted by: zombie at April 27, 2017 01:51 PM (DQ4Fv)

I've tangled with BAMN before. They're a bit more about the message than the violence compared to AntiFa, but far more willing to get violent, and are probably more capable of it.

Well, their name says everything you need to know about them: By Any Means Necessary. It's taken froma Malcolm X speech, from before he "mellowed out" near the end of his life, when he said, essentially paraphrasing Vladimir Lenin, that revolutionaries need to take "any means necessary" to bring about communism, meaning bloodshed. It is one of the primary philosopher pillars of Leninist thought -- that the ends justify the means.

The half-reppers are amusing/irritating, but people standing fixed barbells on end should have their balls cut off.

And as for re-racking, I once saw a female gym employee struggling to carry another fixed barbell all the way across the gym back to where it belonged.

Being old-fashioned, I stopped what I was doing and did it for her. But who is so ignorant as to do something like that? You took the barbell; now bring it back.

542 Ace, there's also the element of deliberate denigration of the working man in the faux mud look. There is still a residue of virtue in honest work, and the culture will not tolerate it. So, make it so that any schmuck can be indistinguishable from the real deal.

The same effort is at work in films, like Brokeback Mountain: destroy the value of the real deal.

In fact, I was just reading in the letters section of The Walking Dead comic where a young lesbian was complaining there were no real lesbian relationships, and felt there needed to be someone she could "relate to" and the author basically fell all over himself and blamed himself for being a white male.

I wish I was kidding. It's all about validation and signaling for these people. As if they cease to exist if media doesn't slobber gratuitously all over their lifestyle.

588 Way OT: So I found a rather incredible piece of petrified wood. It's lying loose on the ground about 1.25 miles from the nearest road. The way to the road is rolling and thick with sage and this piece is very heavy, think small stump. There are only narrow game and cow trails through the sage. No vehicle access possible.

Getting it out is a conundrum but I want it in my yard.

Posted by: Meremortal at April 27, 2017 01:09 PM (3myMJ)

Cool! Is it in growth position? Do take pictures as you recover it.

I know where there is a petrified stump, apparently in growth position, here in Alberta. And it's part petrified wood, and part coal. Makes me wonder if the forest around there was partly burned before it got buried and petrified.

I suppose it would be easy enough to adapt Second Skin -- make it
thicker, add a yellow tint -- to begin painting on Fake Callouses every
morning to Steal the Look from a real cowboy.

Bob and Ray once parodied that idea with their ad for a product called "Grit"; you rubbed it on your hands to roughen them up and give them "an honest workman's appearance". But then you needed another product (Smurge) to get the Grit off and still another (Whiff) to get the smell off after you'd used Smurge...
