Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Obamacare Cost-Sharing Subsidies Will Not Be Part of the Deal Republicans Make to Keep Democrats From Shutting the Government Down, Ryan ClaimsThat's a deal that only a Democrat could offer to a Republican. In exchange for you continuing funding Obamacare, we'll allow you the benefit of also being permitted to continue funding Planned Parenthood. We are always bargaining from a position of weakness. Never strength. Just this cramped posture of a beaten boy who rolls up into a ball covering his head and crying "Uncle." And by the way, I assume this is a negotiating position and when the Democrats shut down the government, we'll give in on some cost-sharing subsidies for Obamacare. John Sexton explains what cost-sharing subsidies are: Direct payments to insurance companiesCost-sharing reduction payments are separate from the subsidies used to lower the cost of insurance premiums for people buying Obamacare plans on the exchanges (those who make under 400% of the federal poverty line). CSRs are additional payments made directly to insurers to lower out-of-pocket costs including copayments and annual deductibles. However, the way the law is written means that insurers must discount those items for people at the low end of the income scale whether or not they are receiving the money to cover it from the federal government. So if the CSRs are cut off, as Democrats worry the Trump administration made decide to do, insurers will be losing, even more on the exchanges than they already are.Insurers are mandated to offer discounts to the poor, Sexton reports, so the cost-sharing subsidies are really just a gimmicky rigged game to try to disguise the fact that yes, you are subsidizing other people for their insurance. The government taxes you, the government orders insurers to lower costs for the poor, the government taxes you more and gives some money to the insurers. Without the subsidies, the insurance companies will lose money even faster. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

That is just money that is basically government health care for all, including illegals. I'd rather see Obamacare, which is just socialized medicine via subsidies and mandates, rather see it DIE. Because the GOP still doesn't represent the voter. It, like fellow-traveling socialists, has a different agenda. Empowering you by leaving you alone is not its plan. And it can't afford to leave you alone because it needs your taxes like every other authority designed to control you. Posted by: AnonymousDrivel at April 26, 2017 06:49 PM (H8S+R) 107

This stuff is reason 100,00000 why repubbies and by extension conservatives keep losing to the left. Then we complain on blogs like this. If we cannot find a way to results and to have people with spine to represent us we are toast. Our savior like coulter buckle too, since there is a book to sell. The left meanwhile plays to win every time, and does not apologize and knew they would lose seats over Obamacare short term but did it anyway because they play the long game, knowing once they infect the system the entitlement will be clung to by the dependent public eventually and you will not get rid of it ever, u just play defense until it cannot be removed as a cancer without killing the host. The left plays th long game, they win bc they know how to fight and do so, 24 seven and we could frankly learn a lot from them on tactics, even if their ideas on actual issues are insane. You learn from successful people, and that ain't us...

Any of you been on Obamacare? We have, for about the past year and a half, and I can tell you it is an unmitigated clusterfuck of the first order. I was switched to Medicare last year, but my wife is still on it. What she has, as of this year, planwise, is basically Medicaid (the plan she had last year was shut down by Aetna at the end of the year). First few months of this year it was costing us about $58 a month. Now the "exchange" wants $520 a month for her Medicaid coverage, because they decided I make too much money. The only income we have is my Social Security and a tiny pension of $320, and that's it.
Any of you think that, along with the mortgage, other insurance, utilities, groceries, prescriptions, etc, etc, we can afford an extra $500 for fucking Medicaid? And you know how many doctors take Medicaid? Not very damned many. And we don't qualify for actual Medicaid (again, make too much money). I don't see a way out of this short of blowing my fucking brains out.... Thanks, Obama. Posted by: The Oort Cloud - No-Longer-Deplorable Source of all SMODs at April 26, 2017 06:53 PM (T1H5V) 124

The Oort Cloud@123,
Yep. Obamacare was designed as a takeover of your life. Hyperbole aside, it is, in its essence, a distinguishing feature of its implementation. You want to live? Pay up and screw the free market. The whole fiasco is designed on moving money into an industry that has bottomless needs. There will never be enough money to keep everyone healthy. But that's not the point. The most viable market is one where unsubsidized competition exists. The object is to drive down costs of the entire enterprise. But that's not what we have. We are getting mandated plans wherein the providers are guaranteed money by a third party. The end-user has little say in the exchange of payments for services. Consequently, like in education, there's a bottomless supply of money and no check on costs. Insurance, and expensive at that, coverage will increase but actual service will worsen. It is a horribly designed, anti-market approach. Posted by: AnonymousDrivel at April 26, 2017 07:06 PM (H8S+R) 160

We are never on OFFENSE and that is the point, all we do is react to the latest outrage from the left acting first, and that is dumb.
Absolutely correct. But to be on OFFENSE, we'd actually have to decide upon a shared set of beliefs. The left has done so--they believe in *power* and their right to hold it. They will quite literally SELL OUT any make-believe position they have taken IF...they believe that doing so nets them more *power*. The right is not much better. Sure, we pretend to care about border security. But the idiots we elected will shelve constructing the wall if it keeps the government operating. That's NOT really showing any conviction about border security. And we pretend to be concerned about abortion. But we'll fund PP if it keeps the government operating. And so on. And so on. And so on. To play effectively on OFFENSE, we'd have to be part of something that is COMMITTED to certain *principles*. If we had that kind of *conviction*, there would be no selling-off of policy positions that were used to get elected. Posted by: Crusader at April 26, 2017 07:07 PM (ewSN2) 165

In exchange for you continuing funding Obamacare, we'll allow you the benefit of also being permitted to continue funding Planned Parenthood.
We are always bargaining from a position of weakness. Never strength. Just this cramped posture of a beaten boy who rolls up into a ball covering his head and crying "Uncle." So, do you suggest we just threaten any GOPer with explusion from the caucus for not going along, pass it, and then just sit back with the deluded "knowledge" that we can just kick back and that the Democrats can never ever do anything about this whatsoever because you think that's what the Democrats do? The Democrats lay the ground work, and get people on board before making any move. Is Ryan a coward and "gone native" in D.C.? Yes. Is blindly pushing through without planning the only alternative? No. I get it. People are frustrated. But that is no reason to act like a f**kin' amateur and DERP our way into a less than zero outcome. You cross your "t"s and dot your "i"s, and make sure you get your ducks in a row. Honestly, Mitch McConnell should be handed the responsibility and authority to take care of this, since he's at least demonstrated how to get things done and do so in a way that minimized or even hurts the Democrats, as seen with the SCOTUS nomination. Just give him the acceptable parameters for a "phase I" Obamacare repeal that will move things in a right direction. Posted by: The Political Hat at April 26, 2017 07:09 PM (rUIbB) 172

The mess we have now is equivalent to having to pay thousands of dollars a year to be allowed to fill up at a gas station, provided the gas station is "in-network" (a thing you will not be permitted to know until after you fill up), provided your vehicle has no pre-existing dents or scratches, and provided the lady behind the bulletproof glass--whose job is to fill out myriad computer forms for myriad gas providers, all with different rules--never ever makes a mistake or even a typo. This is starting to annoy me. It's obvious that Trump's Not Really Even Trying To Win! is a a concerted narrative designed for consumption by easily spooked frustrated conservatives. It's *literally* *exactly* the same nonsense they used just a few months ago. Remember?
I get that we have to hold Trump to a standard, but doing that doesn't require being suckers. Didn't we figure all this out last year? Seemed like it. Yet, here we are. Anyway, not funding the CSRs is a good thing, and a serious blow against Obamacare. But I'm sure we're losing somehow, anyway. The repeal is a phased approach, by necessity. This has been explained lots of times. The Freedom Caucus supported the phased approach until their Nevertrump members decided it was time to play their GOP constituents by claiming Trump was a tricksy little traitor. This tactic may sound familiar. For some reason it keeps working. See above. Posted by: GalosGann at April 26, 2017 08:12 PM (md1b/) 252
