On the chess/open thread this weekend, I posted a snapshot taken from an antifa reddit board where one of violent protesters feared for his safety because some 4chan guys successfully identified one of his cowardly comrades despite the fact that he was wearing a mask and sunglasses. For those of you who don't hang out on the weekend threads, you should scroll past the chess content and read it, it's pretty funny listen to this thug whine and complain that he cannot continue his illegal activities with impunity. And here's another funny one. The Berkeley antifa chapter pretty much got its nose bloodied during the April 15th riots, and they don't much like it. So much so that when Ann Coulter comes to town on the 27th, they're thinking about being somewhere else. Either that or a poetry jam: Click to view antifa cowardice Other options would be a bake sale or, wait, I know, they could all eat lots of beans, then show up at Coulter's speech and toot. That'll show 'em. I don't know how widespread this sentiment is, but it actually wouldn't surprise me if the entire black bloc decided to take the day off. Antifa is mainly comprised of cowards and bullies, and all you have to do is stand up to them and they'll scurry away like cockroaches.
Here's another reason why we shouldn't be afraid of the antifa cowards.
And remember, this is coming from the side that claims the absolute certainty of SCIENCE! Oh, and this is what happens when you attach a political meaning to everything in your life. The slogan on its own, "By any means necessary," of course goes back to the 1960s New Left revolutionary radicals, or at least wannabe revolutionaries. It's been a rhetorical staple of progressive street theatre ever since.
Locally here in the SF Bay Area, I got the impression that BAMN came in to its own as an actual organization back around the time that ACORN (which has roots here) was broken up.
Naturally, the agitators, organizers, recruiters, bagmen, and agents provocateur didn't go away when ACORN did. Too good a racket to give up. They just swirled around briefly and re-coalesced under new titling. Often in the same physical premises as before.

So far the vote is about tied 50-50 go/not-go. But you are right - -I don't need to go to these things anymore because now EVERYONE has a camera. When I first started covering protests back in 2002, I basically the ONLY PERSON documenting them. Which is why my reports at first seemed so revolutionary. But as the years passed, more and more people began picking up their cameras and emulating the "citizen journalist" thing. Then when cell phones first got decent cameras around 2008, and even more so about 2012 when the quality drastically improved, "documenting the action" became completely commonplace -- everyone could do it, so everyone did it.
So if I do go, it won't be with the imagination that I need to "report on" what happened -- but rather merely to witness history.
But I do NOT want to get caught in a riot situation. Happened too many times before, and I'm too weary and old to endure that anymore. So if I do go, I'll stay WAY back in the back.
At the Milo event, I thought I was as far away as I could be, and even so I STILL got caught up in the some of the actions. Riots are unpredictable.

I had always heard that it was an errant shot -- the cop who fired was trying to fire a "warning shot" that was "over the heads" of the street-level protesters - -and he unwittingly sprayed a bunch of people on a nearby roof that he wasn't aiming at and didn't even know were there. One of the buckshot hit hit Rector in the neck and he bled out.
Afterwards, the crowd spread the rumor that the cops intentionally shot at the roof-sitters -- a lie that still circulates -- but it's very very unlikely. The cop's testimony that it was an errant warning shot is much more likely.

How Louie Two Stools Got His Name.
I grew up in the Bronx of the '50s and '60s. One of the cultural highlights of our small by New York standards neighborhood was a "candy store" known as "Eddie's Nut House" after Eddie, the owner. Now a New York "candy store" is not just a candy store. It also can have a soda fountain and sell newspapers and magazines and maybe take a bet or two on the ponies or the "numbers".
So, Louie was a big guy especially for an Eye-tie. His weight would vary from say 300-400 lbs of avourdupois. Now the customer side of the soda fountain had a row of stools set in the tile floor and with revolving seats. When Louie would belly up and take a seat, no one could seat on the stools on either side of him due to his overhang. So, one crowded day, this final gets crazy Eddie's goat and he spaketh thusly: "Louie do me a favor. When you come in, sit on two stools 'cause when you sit on one stool I loose three stools.
