Quotes of The Day

Quote I

Leadership rests not only upon ability but upon commitment and upon loyalty and upon pride and upon followers...Leadership is not just one quality, but rather a blend of many qualities; and while no one individual possesses all the needed talents to go into leadership, each man can develop a combination to make him a leader.Vince Lombardi

Quote II

Civilization, in fact, grows more and more maudlin and hysterical; especially under democracy it tends to degenerate into a mere combat of crazes; the whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary.H.L. Mencken

Quote III

You know, you put more value on every minute...I mean, I always thought I kind of did that. I really always enjoyed myself. But it's more valuable now. You're reminded to enjoy every sandwich, and every minute of playing with the guys, and being with the kids and everything.Warren Zevon

For years the Right has been claiming there has been voter fraud. President Trump reiterated that statement shortly after his election. Hundreds of illegal votes in a swing state.

The post-election audit report, released by the North Carolina State Board of Elections (NCSBE), an independent and bipartisan agency that oversees elections in the state, found hundreds of illegal votes, including votes cast by felons and non-citizens, double voting, voter impersonation, and irregularities that affected mail-in absentee ballots.

The audit uncovered 441 cases where suspected active felons voted during the 2016 elections.

Everything important in life requires ID. It's about time that an ID is required to vote. States can provide assistance to those who claim they are "disenfranchised". You know who is disenfranchised? 441 legal voters and their votes in N.C.

A flying vehicle may be coming to a lake near you.

As engineers tinker away at perfecting self-driving cars, Google co-founder Larry Page is preparing to release a personal flying vehicle.

An ultralight aircraft called the Kitty Hawk Flyer has been unveiled in a YouTube video that shows it zipping over a lake while commandeered by a single rider.

The electric, propeller-driven prototype is the work of Page’s Silicon Valley startup company, Kitty Hawk, which announced that the vehicle will go on sale later this year.

The obligatory jet-pack song.

1 truck. 12 tons of food. 5 days. Delivering food from Yakutsk, Russia to Belaya Gora, Russia. Not a trip for the faint of heart. This gives new meaning to the phrase "Road Trip".

Cult movie 'This Is Spinal Tap' made only $179 in 22 years. Not so fast says the members of Spinal Tap.

Shearer launched legal action alone at first, asking for $125 million and accusing Vivendi of having “fraudulently under-reported the revenues owed.” But the stakes rose when Guest, McKean and Reiner added their names to the lawsuit earlier this year and demanded $400 million.

The ONT Musical Interlude

April 25,
1977, Elvis Presley made the last recordings of his life during a concert at the Saginaw, Michigan Civic Centre. Three songs from the show appeared on the posthumously released Presley album, 'Moody Blue'. via thisdayinmusic.com

1982, Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Ebony And Ivory.' This was McCartney's 24th No.1 hit single as a songwriter. The title was inspired by McCartney hearing Spike Milligan say "black notes, white notes, and you need to play the two to make harmony folks!". It was later named as the tenth worst song of all time by Blender magazine and in 2007 was named the worst duet in history by BBC 6 Music listeners. via thisdayinmusic.com

It wasn't very good, was it?

How did Venezuela become such a disaster?Nope, The USA is not to blame.

It used to be a stable, prosperous, and reasonably efficient state structure. How could a country with so many natural resources be unable to feed its people? What happened? How did it all unravel? And what lessons can we draw from the drama?

To blame it all on abstractions like “socialism” is too simple. We need a comprehensive, nuanced explanation of how the country was plunged into its present state. These are the major reasons:

One man's fishing bait is another's pollution control agent. Wax worms eat plastic bags.

The wax worm, a caterpillar typically used for fishing bait and known for damaging beehives by eating their wax comb, has now been observed munching on a different material: plastic bags.

No math quizzes here. Just a music quiz. Can you name these 70's songs?

Over the weekend your humble Cob heard a radio advertisement. The ad was for a bus trip to see Billy Joel at Lambeau Field. The price wasn't bad, but Billy Joel at Lambeau? Da Fuq?!

How does Joel continue to sell out stadium concerts?

ut Joel’s dominance doesn’t end at the terminus of the Hudson River Line. The MSG residency, with help from a methodical regimen of packed stadium shows across the United States and beyond, has turned Joel, who was all but retired just a few years ago, into the music industry’s fourth-highest paid performer in 2014 and 2015 (the most recent years for which data is available). Another way of putting it: Despite having not released a new pop album since 1993, Billy Joel is outearning the likes of U2 and Adele.

Another story of the inmates running the asylum. Scripps College coddles special snowflakes. And it isn't cheap.

According to Mann, most of the resident advisers are African-American or Latina. They receive free room and board worth, which is worth almost $16,000 a year.

Yet, they feel (or claim) that their “labor” is worth more. According to Mann, who attends Scripps, that “labor” largely consists of opening dorm doors for residents who forget keys, asking students to turn down music on weekend evenings, and so forth.

*****

Not to be outdone by Scripps College for ridiculous employment practices. Pomona College joins the fucking nuts fray. Students demand to be the HR Department. Yes, the wet behind the ears brats want the power to hire teaching staff.

In an open letter to Pomona College’s Sociology Department, Dean of Academic Affairs, and President, an anonymous group of 128 students, alumni, and “allies” of the Sociology Department demand that the college rescind its offer to hire “racist” and “unethical” Dr. Alice Goffman as a sociology professor and turn over control of future hiring to students.

I learned how to make my own bullets. And it was harder than I expected.

23 Just watched "Rogue One." Not bad.

I had this idea. I am not egoistical enough to think it is original. But get this:

With the computer use all the great actors and actresses of the past and put together a Star Wars without any living actors. Greta Garbo, Ray Milland, Greer Garson, Humphrey Bogart, Gilbert Roland.

Holy crap. It would be great.

Just an aside. If I am standing by a tropical sea with a pretty girl and we are about to die, I would definitely say "Wanna go skinny dipping?"

I love Spinal Tap.

I got 100% on the 70s music quiz - which everyone should, because they have the artist's picture on each slide, duh, but hey, I knew them all anyway.

And - I saw Billy Joel in concert in college.

53 Mortkid (16) came home today from school. Apparently he got into it with some loony lefty teenmoonbat. She demanded to know if he was pro-life or pro-choice.

He said he told her that he was pro-freedom but absolutely opposed to killing babies.

He asked me if he did okay.

Then he told me with a funny look on his face, " Dad? There's two kinds of people in America today: the illogical, emotional, crazy people and us. "

Glad he's such a great kid. Hate this is where things are.

169 As far as Billy Joel, I'm under the impression he varies his standards for his live shows. (New York State of Mind would lend it self to that.) Keeps things from getting boring for him and keeps the audience alert. No idea if he does any new stuff these days. It also helps that much of his music is head and shoulders above most of the more recent crap out there.
--

So, I'm going to ruin live shows for everyone. So... if you go to live shows and want to be surprised, DO NOT READ ON!

There's a site called setlist.fm

Search a musician, and they'll bring up the shows he's played and the set list.

Here's how it goes: real musicians (like Billy Joel, and, Eric Church, for example) play somewhat different songs every night. Most pop artists (Madonna, Katie Perry etc.) have shows that are really complex and, well, automated. So they have to do the same set every night.

BTW... Billy Joel is awesome. "Vienna" made me cry when he did it live. And he's very loyal-- the guy behind his live shows has been with him since the beginning.

Posted by: Puddleglum at April 25, 2017 10:25 PM (pY+s4)

Men Going Their Own Way.

Men who recognize the legal, cultural, economic, and social risks that feminists and feminism bring when men and boys engage in any kind of relationship, with them. Feminists and feminism is a cancer seeking to dominate and subjugate men and boys as subhuman as to the will of feminists. It's Islam for girls. MGTOW recognizes that only by not engaging with feminists and women can pressure be brought upon by other women and even white knights to nuke feminism from orbit. Men also recognize that we are more productive amd can accomplish our dreams and goals without relationships with women. We can save money, lots of money, and do what we want. Feminists and white knights have nobody to blame but themselves for the current state rapid death consuming Western Civilization.

Thats how I see it.

264 Great news lindarose and infidel... continued prayers for insomniac, Uber Lyft Driver, Country Boy, et al.

I gotta vent about something. The IL House today passed a bill to add abortion coverage to its medical assistance/Medicaid program and it is likely to pass the Senate as well. The governor says he will veto it, and there probably aren't enough votes for an override at this time, so it's not a done deal. However, I'm sure it's just a matter of time before it does happen.

I am beyond disgusted with this state, which is beyond broke and has cut back all kinds of services for people like my autistic daughter, yet thinks it can afford millions of dollars to pay to kill babies. To top it all off, if/when this does become law the state Medicaid agency will have to draw up rules to determine who qualifies for coverage, what if any criteria the providers have to meet -- and it will be my job to review those rules. I've been a devout pro life Catholic all my life and the thought of having to play even a small part in that process really bothers me.

I'm thinking I should quit my job and get the hell out of here now but the problem is that I'm already well into my 50s and really don't know where else to go. I have lived in downstate IL all my life and do not have any friends or family elsewhere. We also have a lot of debt related to our recent efforts to start a self publishing business, and not a lot of income to spare for traveling hundreds of miles to look for jobs and places to live. Any advice? Am I overreacting or is this concern of mine legitimate?

292 To blame it all on abstractions like "socialism" is too simple.

But it's true. Socialism (and leftist political schemes, in general) stagnate and kill the body they direct. That is the essence of socialism, to begin with - stagnation - and with stagnation always comes death.

The other particulars of Venezuela's problems are due to the fact that it's one of the ex-spanish/portuguese colonies, which have all been shitholes since they gained independence. But socialism will stagnate and kill even the best societies.

299 I haven't been to a popular music concert in decades, just local symphonies. I'm too cheap to pay those ticket prices. But I will go on YouTube and watch certain songs performed live over time to see how (or if) the singer changes things. It's fun to listen to "Only the Good Die Young" from the early album then as a reggae style at a concert. Or some Three Dog Night. (Yeah, I'm old.)

I've been to concerts by the Stones, Beatles, John Denver (excellent, BTW), Neil Diamond, Blood, Sweat and Tears, and others, especially jazz. One of the best I ever saw was from The Carpenters in 1971 or 72. They didn't just repeat the records. The act had humor, Richard got to show off his considerable piano skills and arranging, and I thought Karen's voice was even better in the hall than on vinyl. I was surprised at what good entertainers they were, not just performers.

That's the big question. I see a lot of conflicting information online about where the "best" places for adult autistics to live are (she's 21). I see stories about long waiting lists, service cutbacks, etc. in other states and wonder if it really would be any better elsewhere. I would guess that any more fiscally responsible state would have to be an improvement but I don't know what the reality "on the ground" is. This is something I've been pondering for a while (leaving IL) and today was kind of the icing on the cake so to speak.

325 I was listening to an interview with Billy Joel (I like him, a lot!) and he told an interesting story about why he quit writing new stuff. He said he was always great at music, but not so good at the business side, and he got taken to the cleaners by bad agents and double dealing music companies. The one that ended up with his contract (I think it's Sony) made sure that he knew that they had ironclad ownership rights to the next 5 albums he produced, and he would just get some nominal royalties after some payoff point. And then they told him he couldn't do anything about it, it was all signed and legal.

and so Joel said "okay, that's fine, guess what. I ain't writing no new music, and I ain't making any more albums." And from that point on, he focused on only doing his live shows, which he has gotten phenomenally good at.

Sony still owns all of the rights to his next 5 albums.

346 Speaking of vote fraud, the standard works like this...

In areas where Dems completely control the local election officials, they take some of the real ballots and put them aside.

They replace them with an equal number of ballots that they've cast.

If the election isn't close, that is where it ends. The vote totals for the Dem only move slightly (since they were going to get 80-90% of those votes they hid anyway) and the total number of votes stays correct.

However, if the election is close, Dem election officials start "finding" the ballots they put aside. They are perfectly willing to let anyone look at those "found" ballots though since they are 100% legit.

This is why Dems are always "finding" ballots after a close election, and in said close elections they routinely get 100+% turnout.

It's not that we don't get along, but we don't have a lot in common either. My husband has a considerably bigger family (5 siblings, at least a dozen nieces/nephews) but he doesn't get along with any of them... I personally don't understand what his issues are, they seem nice enough to me, but he won't visit or call any of them except his mom, who's in her 80s. So the issue isn't that we're "attached" to family here, so much as it is the lack of any connections elsewhere who could help us.

The nature of music has changed, and the ONLY way artists make money now is through touring. That's why they do these huge productions to justify high ticket prices.

I just spent my whole workday redoing some archive tarballs we create for public access because the software engineer that wrote the code never tests anything and heyO, the directory listings for files created in the last several months didn't match our standard. Whole day spent waiting on file copies and babysitting slow codes instead of producing anything new.

I am SO GLAD I got this twerp removed from being supervisor to anyone. It wasn't a malice move, I suggested and bosses followed just moving him sideways to a special *research* position where he doesn't supervise and thus has no power to hold back our talented younger software folks by insisting everything still be done with the old language he knows inside out but the rest of the world hardly uses anymore. So he is still here and still a PITA at times but at least he ain't the supervisor and things are gradually being modernized.

It's not quite as dangerous as it looks. In the Spring, rivers and lakes get a layer of slush and temporary ice over a thick layer of old ice. You can break through the thin ice, and get mired, but still not go through the thick ice and go to the bottom.

Oh, I think she was always quite the guitarist. Guitar playing is strange, it's sometimes very difficult to emulate the sound of a song, even if it's simple chords. Sleepy kitten rental. Get a bunch of kittens, and stimulate the hell out of them just before a reservation. Toss toys around, nip them up, whatever. Then, when the appointment time arrives, the client gets a completely exhausted kitten delivered to their door to lie on their lap for a half hour, snrrrrking and making little paw-flippy dream motions.

Set it up in a college town and you could basically make enough money to retire during finals week.

Something to add- when you're feeling like twice boiled shitcakes and believe life is just a spirit crushing killdozer, just remember two things:

1) Life unfolds in a sine wave;
2) Perception lags reality.

-so while you may perceive that things are horrid and you're in the trough of existence, in reality you've already bottomed out and things are getting better- you just don't realize it yet.

456 So of course some other gun nut probably already talked about the reloading article, but just one comment. OK two.

The load he listed for Alliant's BE-86 powder (between 6.4 and 7.2 grains) is very, very "hot" for a 230-grain plated bullet. I think. I just happened to load 50 45ACP rounds last night (shot them today) with BE-86, my first production rounds with that powder. Using a 200-grain lead bullet - 6.3 grains (you use more powder with lighter bullets, and vice versa).

Alliant lists 7.4 grains of powder as a max load for a +P (higher than normal pressure) round using a 230-grain FMJ (full metal jacket). For plated, you're supposed to use the *lower* end of FMJ data - so using FMJ +P charges is pretty aggressive, especially for a first-time, introductory, series of loads. Ironically, the article says "For the experienced loader, those numbers may seem low." Um, no - quite the opposite. Also oddly, the numbers for the HP-38 powder are quite reasonable.

But the main thrust of the article - that reloading is difficult - is just wrong. It's not. At least basic reloading, replacing factory ammo, which is what most people do.

So any morons considering reloading - do it. Don't be discouraged by the WarIsBoring article.

472 I think today's situation is arguably the inverse of the Mencken quote above, MisHum. The bit about politicians vying to agitate the populace about "hobgoblins".

Today, the people appear unable to make the political class alarmed about very real problems and crises that affect them, many of which have their origins in policies of government. Even with massive "rebellion" elections.

Attempts to divert or agitate the populace, say with bizarre and obviously stupid crap like "Russia!", fall flat as a green energy company's revenue forecast.

But it appears no amount of voting or screaming can force the bulk of the incumbents to do anything about serious problems affecting people very directly and perniciously. We'll see.

My Interarms MkX Mauser is right at 1 MOA, with cheap-ass, Winchester White Box 150 gr. rounds.

All the "premium" brands, including some match ammo, are less consistent.

That's one rifle, one sample. This, I freely admit.

But my Ruger M-77 International in .308 prefers the same cheap brand and weight.

I have absolutely no doubt that a talented handloader could work up far more accurate loads for each.

Suffice to say though, that the factory rounds aren't always crap. It's a crapshoot though, as to the combination of rifles and rounds that work together, though.

There's not much difference between the "premium" brands (unless you get into the really spendy stuff) and less expensive ammo. The rounds are still mass produced.

What handloading teaches you is that a given rifle- even the same model and caliber- responds differently to different loads and bullet weights. Finding the right load takes time.

Take two otherwise identical rifles in the same caliber bought from the same store and the same day and they'll "like" different loads. One might be more accurate with a 150 gr bullet at 2750 fps and a specific powder and case length. The other might prefer a 165 gr bullet.

It's not at all unheard of for a 3 MOA rifle to become a 1 MOA rifle with nothing more than different ammo.

Posted by: Hollowpoint at April 26, 2017 01:53 AM (pX+Iv)

496 Hollowpoit,

You're entirely correct.

Point I was making though, is that not all "factory ammo", is absolute crap.

That said. I'd far prefer a rifle and load that can produce 1 MOA at 400 yds, than one that can barely nudge 1 MOA at 100 yds, then fall the hell apart, further down range.

Premium components, handled with great care and precise measurements, tend to prevail. And mostly, do.

But on occasion, the rare match of production rifle and production ammo... well, lightning strikes.

Which is the only point I was striving to make.

516 Mornin'.

Talked to my big boss yesterday (I'm in the import-export biz) and he says Trump is absolutely slapping a 20% tariff on Canadian softwood imports, in the form of ADD/CVD (anti-dumping duties/countervailing duties.) According to my boss, it's not just a rumor and will be announced within a few days. He's tied deeply into the trade movers and shakers, so he knows. He added that "cows are next." Hmmmm.

ADD/CV is used to punish countries where the government subsidizes industries. The argument is that the Canadian government subsidizes their lumber industry and allows private companies to clear-cut on public lands.

The last time we went through this, about a dozen years ago, the US collected ADD/CVD for months, then caved and gave it all back.

Is this Trump's opening salvo in a NAFTA-renegotiation? Signs point to yes.

518 I had a client call me yesterday all pissed off that "That asshole Trump is making us file ISF-5's."

ISF-5 is a form of Importer Security Filing used for trans-shipments through the US. For example, if you own a business in Canada and have a shipment arriving in a US port, such as NY, and then being trucked to Canada, even though the load is sealed and none of it is entering the commerce of the US, the US government still wants an ISF filing. They want to know who loaded the container, where it was loaded, what's in it etc. etc before the vessel even leaves the foreign port.

Because dirty bombs and the like. Vince Flynn based a whole book on that scenario.

So this guy's going off ranting and raving about Trump. When I finally got a moment to cut in, I informed him that ISF has been the law of the land for ten years, started by Bush and fully implemented under Obama. This guy had just never had a trans-shipment before, apparently.

After I dropped some truth on his Trump Derangement Syndrome, he calmed down.

I do wonder what the fatality rate is for animals. It seems that shipping them is hazardous.

Chelsea, you need to start mapping out your road to the White House. Someone has to do it and your mother Hillary will never be President.
