Because, that is why.

Quotes of The Day

Quote I

We cannot accept the fact that Jews wouldn't be entitled to live and buy anywhere in Jerusalem. I can only imagine what would happen if someone suggested Jews could not live in certain neighborhoods in New York, London, Paris or Rome. There would certainly be a major international outcry. Benjamin Netanyahu

Quote II

We must reject the idea that every time a law's broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions. Ronald Reagan

Quote III

With all due respect, many in the entertainment industry are deep into mind-altering substance abuse, and when one’s logic and intellectual calculating powers are replaced with dopey feel-good, fantasy-driven denial, the democratic party serves them well. Ted Nugent

Stopped by the police? Do you or don't you answer their questions? Can the police retaliate against you for your failure to answer?

Specifically, Alexander claims that the police retaliated against Alexander’s refusal to answer their questions by ordering him out of his car and then “pinn[ing] him face down onto the ground.” Several officers joined in, with “one officer press[ing] a boot or knee on the back of Alexander’s neck as his face was mashed into the concrete.” The police then handcuffed him, and an officer asked, “Are you ready to talk to me now?” Alexander responded with an expletive, which led the police to shackle his legs. Amazingly, at that point the officers arrested Alexander. The precise basis for the arrest is a little bit murky. But at least as it was written up in the police report, Alexander was arrested for obstructing a police officer.

Alexander filed a civil suit against the officers and the municipality (collectively, “the officers”.

SCOTUS Says States Have No Right to Money Taken Based on Overturned Convictions

This week the Supreme Court ruled that Colorado has no right to keep fines, fees, court costs, and restitution it extracts from criminal defendants whose convictions are later reversed. By forcing people to prove their innocence before they can get back property that is rightly theirs, the Court said, Colorado has been violating the 14th Amendment's guarantee of due process. The Institute for Justice, which filed a brief in the case emphasizing that the presumption of innocence is an essential aspect of due process, makes a compelling argument that civil asset forfeiture routinely violates that principle.

UC-Berkeley, politically correct and proud of it. They really don't want Ann Coulter on campus.

Following an intense backlash from conservatives and liberals after cancelling a campus speech by author Ann Coulter, the University of California-Berkeley appeared to change course.

Except, they didn’t really.

Uncle Bernie to endure the wrath of his supporters? Bernie Sanders defends Ann Coulter.

In a surprising turn of events, every millennial’s favorite old man, Sen. Bernie Sanders, has come out in defense of Ann Coulter, denouncing threats that forced the University of California, Berkeley, to try to postpone her appearance at the college.

“I don’t like this. I don’t like it,” Sanders told The Huffington Post in response to the security threats that forced the university to put off the conservative firebrand’s event.

“Obviously Ann Coulter’s outrageous―to my mind, off the wall. But you know, people have a right to give their two cents-worth, give a speech, without fear of violence and intimidation,” he added.

Conservative students at Berkeley Suing UC-Berkeley. Good for them.

Too big to fail? 20,000 union members at risk of losing pension benefits.

In March, four unions filed applications with the U.S. Treasury Department requesting relief under a program established by the Obama administration that allows multi-employer pension plans to cut benefits in order to sustain the long-term health of the plan. The applications from United Furniture Workers Pension Fund, Alaska Ironworkers Pension Fund, Southwest Ohio Regional Council of Carpenters, International Association of Machinists of Motor City Pension Fund, and Teamsters Local 805 Pension & Retirement Plan are all being reviewed by the department, according to the Pension Rights Center. If the cuts are approved on all four applications, as many as 20,309 union members could see their retirement money drastically reduced.

Blue Cross/Blue Shield of North Carolina faces enormous set back. h/t ibguy

A federal judge dealt a major blow to a health insurer's attempt to recoup millions of dollars it says it is owed under an Affordable Care Act program designed to incentivize insurer participation in the ACA public exchange program.

Judge Lydia Kay Griggsby of the U.S. Court of Federal Claims in Washington, on Tuesday rejected a lawsuit brought last June by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. The company had accused the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services of failing to make good on its obligation to pay nearly $130 million under the ACA risk corridors program.

Pope Francis ought to brush up on his history.

Pope Francis has drawn a rebuke from the American Jewish Committee after he likened European refugee centers to “concentration camps.”

The Pope was speaking to migrants at the Basilica of St. Bartholomew on Saturday about a man he met at a refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesbos last year.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions, is it not? Beverage and food taxes hurt the poor.

It’s certainly intuitive that taxing sugary soda and bad-cholesterol-ridden potato chips will prompt consumers to buy fewer of those items—and that people will substitute healthier alternatives. But it turns out that consumers’ buying habits do not change markedly in response to the higher prices, and that the burden of those taxes falls most heavily on the low-income, who allocate larger shares of their budgets to food than wealthier people do. Together with our coauthors Adam Hoffer and Regeana Gvillo, we describe these effects in more detail in a new paper published in the Journal of Entrepreneurship and Public Policy.

Carried away: The inside story of how the Carl Vinson's canceled port visit sparked a global crisis.

With the benefit of hindsight, officials in the Pentagon and in the Pacific said they should have done more to nip the story in the bud before it got out of control.

“In my view, we shouldn’t have announced the port cancellation so early,” one official mused.

But many defended the decision to make the announcement, saying there was no way that they could tell 5,000 families on the Vinson that their port visit to Australia was canceled and it not get out.

The ONT Musical Interlude

April 24, 1961, Del Shannon started a four week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Runaway', also a No.1 in the UK. Del was the first person to have a hit with a Beatles song in the US with his version of 'From Me To You.' via thisdayinmusic.com

April 24, 1968, Louis Armstrong was at No.1 in the UK with the single 'What A Wonderful World / Cabaret.' At 69 years of age, it made Armstrong the oldest act ever to score a UK No.1. via thisdayinmusic.com

The ONT is not sure why the climate alarmists haven't told us about this. Polar bears travel over thick ice to hunt Canadians down and kill them like seals.

The same day that the above satellite image was taken (19 April), at the north end of the Strait on the Newfoundland side, a polar bear was spotted in a small community northwest of St. Anthony (marked below, “Wildberry Country Lodge” at Parker’s Brook). It’s on the shore of north-facing Pistolet Bay on the Great Northern Peninsula, near the 1000 year old Viking occupation site of L’Anse aux Meadows.

Hunting down and killing Canadians? Nah, just kidding.

31 How To Innovate Without Reinventing The Wheel

It seems almost inevitable with government, that increasingly it takes longer to get less but with greater cost. Red tape and bureaucracy, combined with an obsession of reinventing the wheel, so as to speak, throttles innovation and development, as well as implementation itself. The type of innovation in the military seen during World War II is unheard of in this day and age.

New York, sure. Rome maybe, as I don't know what's going on there these days. But while no one actually admits it, there are certain neighborhoods in London and Paris where "being Jewish" is akin to signing your own death warrant.

179 Attention everyone:

I've discovered a way to hack eHarmony.

Here how you do it..

They have a feature called "What if?", which shows you summary profiles of women how are "close" matches. But the catch is you have to initiate a communication with them or else their profile will go away, by hitting the "pass" button. Problem is most of the time you're like "I don't want to text or talk to her! I just wanna masturbate to her pics." A real tricky dilemma. But here's the hack to get around it.. while using the iPhone app press the button to send a message but the once on the next screen immediately hit the back button on the app. You will see her profile pic go away and the next girl in the list will appear. But check out your "matches" section, the girl's profile you wanted to keep around is now one of your regular matches.

235 Re the feel-good firefighter story:

One time near Christmas, a co-worker and I were the only people working late. She walked in and asked if she could tell me something.

She said that her father was a violent and abusive alcoholic. After one particularly bad beating, her mother took the children and left. She was eight years old at the time.

Her mother had no job skills but she found a menial job after a few days, so they moved from a homeless shelter into a little apartment. Christmas was coming and her mother told the children that there was no money for presents. Her mother told them, "Let's just enjoy being together this year and plan on having much better Christmases in the future."

On Christmas Eve they heard a siren. A firetruck turned onto their block and stopped at their building. Six firemen came up with a big Christmas dinner and lots of presents for all of them. They got to ride on the firetruck and Santa drove them.

She, like me, was approaching 60, but she said since that time she'd never thought of Christmas without thinking of those men and how kind they were to her and her family.

I guess the hawk finally got pissed off.

299 Re the guy suing the cops, the court threw out his claims of 5th and 1st Amendment violations. The cops saw him moving around parking spaces in a motel, and pulled him over. He handed his license but told them that he refused to talk to them, then refused to get out of his car which, btw, is a common and reasonable request in traffic stops.

Basically, the only "right" this guy is asserting is the right to generally be an asshole and to be belligerent and threaten cops with his vehicle. (BTW, I'm not saying that he was going to try to run over the cops -- but the whole reason they ask you to get out of your car when they run your license is so that you don't, you know, run over a cop when their back is turned. This guy refused to do that and spewed profanities at the cops.)

335 328 Whiskey Jack, or "Camp Robber"; are a type of Jay, I think they are, out West, in our Very Large Square States. They are attracted to bright, shiny things.. like rings.. or watches.. or car keys... Can only imagine what it's like, in some remote National Forest, watching a bird fly away with those.

Yeah, Gray Jays. Smooth head, no crest. Playful and curious little devils. But they tend to avoid populated areas; you have to go into the woods to find them.

I bought one! A couple years ago. You want the one with the knuckle guard (imo) and the sharpening stone, and the little booklets, the whole nine yards. Nice canvas case. The only ding, it's not "real" Military canvas. They treat the genuine article with a fungicide or whatever. I kept my Woodman's Pal in the garage in a drawer, and it got a little furry because of the humidity. Other than that, it's perfect. Works great for culling sucker growth off of trees. Listening to the radio during a little run to town I just had to make, I learned the "End of the World" or WWIII will start on April 26th Wed.

There was some show on, who the hell I don't know. It was getting into Coast-to-Coast territory sounded like, but it wasn't George Noory. It was some political guy with a C-to-C bent.

Anyway, supposedly, back in Sept. 2016 there was a "mysterious" broadcast. It was a brief Emergency Broadcast tone followed by an announcer repeating "Trump April 26th. Trump April 26th...." And they have helpful recordings, of course.

So, they've deduced that was some secret Illuminati message about their plans. Either that or a time leak. Maybe a warning from the future.

And, they warn, that's the date when the Armada arrives off North Korea.

So WWWIII starts Wednesday. Make a note.

Buy a box of the copper shit ammo, and fire off a few rounds at some tin cans or something. Keep some rounds of it near the gun, in case the game warden shows up. Use the lead rounds for shooting crows and/or foxes.

So very, very lightweight, that it weighs less than the I.D.s and too-thin money clip in my pocket.

Traditional "Buck 110" profile and mechanism, but at maybe 1/10th the weight and 1/2 the length and 2/3 narrower than the Buck.

Customer service w Gerber has been nothing but superb. I asked them to locate an area retailer that sold the LST, as I couldn't find a replacement for one that went into Galveston Bay.

They got all my information.

Then, unasked, they mailed me an LST, an LST compact, and an LST Keychain-Mini, all for free.

Because I liked their product well enough to contact their HQ, and as where I could find it.

That makes it to me, a very, very valuable knife, all at an MSRP of about $19.00.

I do have a modern Marttiini puukka, but it doesn't have that full length fuller and the blade is more of a standard shape. It also has the rubber handle and smooth pommel.
The older puukkas have a slightly humped back, and of course the casein plastic grips that are always sort of crackled, and some of them have a horse's head too.

And that doesn't get to the handles made of birch bark

414 I would like to see a fairly comprehensive set of tests and reviews for the common machetes and variants thereof. Ones from today's marketplace, not the days of yore.

Cold Steel, Gerber, Woodsman's Friend, etc.

Steel specs, Rockwell hardness, ability to take an edge, durability of that edge, strength (to destruction with a few sacrificial samples), condition of edge after chopping through some 1" willow branches and then 1" bamboo stalks.

Add in some other tests, if need be.

For me, I'd want to find the best of the test, but one priced such that its semi-disposable, more or less.

A Machete is no tool to invest +$1,000 with a custom blademaker. Unless you just want a very pretty, too expensive to actually use, wall hanger.

What are the large knives, like a machete, but tapering from small at the hilt to thick and broad at the tip, with a square end? Puts the center of mass closer to the tip, and makes chopping easier.

Posted by: weft cut-loop at April 25, 2017 12:02 AM (GgzGa)

My hunting knife has finger guard on it, there are times when you don't want a greasy muddy handle slipping your fist down and over the blade. The day I dressed out a deer with my pocket knife was because of a really dumb move on my part.

However, each tool has a use, and the tool is designed for that use. The Opinel is a nice design, it is cheap and well made, and I picked the size that fits my hand to where the butt of the handle cuddles into the base of my palm when I hold it, reducing the risk of it slipping.
I mostly use it for opening envelopes and cutting salami.

For a Machete, I delegate nearly all such pedantry to the manufacturer of said blade.

I just want to know which is the best bang for the $20/$50 buck, hanging on the pegboard at the Bass Mountain store.

Conversely, when I invest in a highly personal working blade, such as a hunting knife or EDC pocket knife, I'll shoulder some of the burden of the Pedant, and demand a degree of knowledge thereof.

And if I'm paying multiple $hundreds or $thousands for a blade? Me and the bladesmith are going to consult at length, over every aspect of the thing.

But I'm thankful for Pedantic Metalurgical Engineers. They dedicate much learning and effort into the specs for every spring that opens the CD drive of this computer, every alloy and steel which comprise the truck I drive, and literally, billions of unknown, unnoticed and unsung components of every thing we use every day.

To them, my next bourbon.

No need to spend stupid money on good kitchen knives. These are GOOD, but you also have to know how to dress the edges when needed.

They're also made to wear out, be discarded, and replaced.

We were once on a flight and got bumped by Dennis Farina. Our flight was $50 each way due to a SW airlines anniversary special. We got vouchers for $200 each, not a bad deal.

Off to bed, work beckons tomorrow. Be well you Morons.

513 weft, a few years ago we bought a small set of Cutco (basic kitchen knives - butcher/chef's knife, paring knife, small and large carving knives, and their unique spatula-like knife with one smooth and one serrated side) - partially a favor to the son of a friend's friend. The kid was nice, as was his sales partner.

Anyway, while pricey, we have used those knives almost every day, sometimes more than once, since. Exactly the sort of thing I don't mind spending $$$ on - quality tools that I use all the time.

And I've been thinking of getting a set of their steak (table) knives, actually. Do you have them? I assume they are similar quality.

516

Back in my day, in the 80s, there used to be steak houses galore all over the place. There were regional chains, and local places.

No more. There was a venerable old one in Greenville, "Charlie's Steak House" that went out of business just a while back. It was high end. It had been around for ages, and I think they said the current generation of "Charlies" didn't want to take it over, and they couldn't find a buyer who would do it right, so they just folded.

I don't know what happened, but there are damn few steak houses left. THere's an OUtback, somewhere, and some high end places that cook good steaks (but you'll pay an arm and a leg for 'em). And that's it.

I have an uneven relationship with "buy American". Have long tried to do so, but it's not always feasible or acceptable - depends on the particular item and requirements (and whether industry/company has any involvement with dubious import-restriction shenanigans).

But Cutco is the sort of USA-made that I am happy to buy, due to their quality (and apparently their service, though I have not yet had any reason to deal with that).

Can't recall if Cutco has sales (I think so), need to keep an eye on that, and get some steak knives.

But there is very little indication that what happened on Saturday will counter these misconceptions. Instead, the march revealed the glaring dissonance of opposing that trough of ignorance by instead accepting a cringe-worthy hive-mind mentality that celebrates Science as a vague but wonderful entity, what Richard Feynman called "cargo cult science." There was an uncomfortable dronelike fealty to the concept - an oxymoronic faith that information presented and packaged to us as Science need not be further scrutinized before being smugly celebrated en masse. That is not intellectually rigorous thought-instead, it's another kind of religion, and it is perhaps as terrifying as the thing it is trying to fight.

542 A person who says that climate change is the most important issue of our time would have considered the bankruptcy of Solyendra a huge crisis. Consistent people would have moved to Canada crying and flailing their arms like Kermit the frog. SOLYNDRA GREEN IS PEOPLE!

And there many examples of inconsistency. Now that's not a great argument by itself, but the issue has been covered. I thought that the issue would go away quietly, compared with the dull roar of it's existence, and maybe it will. Without a lot of debate.
In 2005 Michael Cricton and ?Monckton? debated two other famous people. We've said our peace, and now trust in experts has eroded. I always thought I would have to wait twenty years, but maybe it will be sooner than that.

And the fact that his musings drove him bugfuck nuts adds a little weight to his efforts.

RIP, Mr. Pirsig.

It reeks of quality.

557 That Reagan quote, about needing to reject the collectivization of guilt, is spot on. Much of Leftist thinking depends upon the idea that all of society, or a large segment of it, is collectively guilty of various sins.

Guilt is only ever individual. It doesn't have some magic transitive property where, if one person of the same race commits some heinous act, I'm somehow partly responsible for it. They did the thing, I did not.

The idea of reparations, of privilege, and of patriarchy can not stand without the notion of collective guilt. It's a one-legged barstool, you knock out the leg, everything on top of it is going down.
