What The Hell Is A March For Science?

Aside from turning Manhattan into a giant parking lot, what did these stupid demonstrations achieve?

Well, it was a monstrous sea of virtue-signalling signs and hip clothing and wry facial hair, and not a single constructive thing other than widening the gulf between hyper-politicized agitation for "climate change" and...um...real science.

The idiocy that "consensus" should end the debate is insulting to everyone who understands the scientific method and isn't driven by partisanship or, probably more likely, the quest for funding.

Newton and Liebnitz and Pasteur and Einstein and Rutherford and Barry Marshall and Robin Warren (look 'em up) and Feynman and Mullis and a host of great scientists did not accept the status quo and the pronouncements of the herd.

Scientific investigation should take one wherever the data point. That the AGW establishment jealously guards its data is a testament to their ulterior motives, and a huge red flag. Show me your raw data, and show me how and why you "corrected" them to prove your hypothesis. Otherwise, you are a fraud and a liar and have no respect for the scientific method.

And another thing:

Correlation does not imply causation

4 There are so many of these dumb marches in DC that I don't even bother to pay attention. The only time I care is if I have to go downtown for something, so then I have to look up what roads are blocked off.

I will note the delicate irony that yesterday it poured rain all day and was 30 degrees colder than it had been the day before. Global warming for the win yet again. Who says God doesn't have a sense of humor?

On the hundreds of occasions when I've felt passionately about an issue or a candidate, I just wrote a check or volunteered to work in a campaign.

In 2004, I gave a couple of afternoons to a (conservative) campaign. When I got done, the two 20-yr-olds in charge of the office called me into the "private" backroom & asked me if... I would like a job running their phone bank. "We'd like you to teach our volunteers to make the calls the way you do it." Nicest compliment I've ever had, but I told them I already had a job.

Thus I missed my chance to have a career as a phone solicitor.

95 Back in the early days of computers, when memory and storage limitations existed, it could be 'explained' that multi-variable models were impossible. But here we are, with amazing technology available and we're told that one single variable 'CO2' explains every fluctuation in the planets temperature.

If you're going to do reliable multi-variable modeling, where would you start? On the climate??

Not me. I'd start on the stock market.

Don't you suppose the various financial institutions would pour money into doing that if it could be done successfully and reproducibly?

Yet here we are.

Bill Nye developed his "science guy" personal on a sketch-comedy show out of Seattle called "Almost Live". It was hysterical, but for a lot of the jokes you had to be there, or from there.

He got his notoriety and "credibility" with the kids Disney show, which was produced by the same local company, and included a lot of the cast from the comedy show.

He may have been an engineer, but his dream was to be a comedian.

128 The thing that really sent up a red flag for me regarding this whole "AGW" thing was something I heard on the news back in the late 1990s. It was a CBS news report on the Kyoto treaty. That document was actually written in Madrid, Spain. And it was reported that "after six weeks of yelling and screaming" (CBS's words, not mine) the Kyoto treaty was ready to be signed at the upcoming Kyoto conference.

Thing is, when I was a very young man I had the opportunity to hang out with a bunch of STEM guys, who were friends of my then-room mate, who was also brilliant. I think they kept me around as a sort of "bright but uneducated" pet, who sometimes asked interesting questions.

One thing I noticed about these guys was that while they could wildly disagree about this or that hypothesis or theory, they always remained very collegial about it. Oh, sometimes they'd come up with some cutesy insults for each other, like "your mother is a Crazy Schrodinger's Cat Lady" or something of this sort. But the thing was, they never got really irate with each other; there was no "yelling and screaming". You either had hard, empirical, reproducible data to make your case with, or you kept your mouth shut. It was really that simple.

What this "yelling and screaming" bit told me was that the nimrods who had written this Kyoto crap up were NOT hard scientists, and did not have any hard data to back up their claims.

And in the about 20 years since I've seen nothing to change my view on the whole AGW fiasco. It's a fucking scam, pure and simple...

Sir William Herschel discovered a correlation between wheat prices and sunspots. It is in the first of these papers that Herschel discusses an anticorrelation between the price of wheat and the number of sunspots visible on the Sun.

It's worse than that: they parameterize their models from the historical data (such as they are). That's why it's disingenuous of them to say "we would have predicted that historical result."

Posted by: Tim in Illinois at April 23, 2017 12:22 PM (d76uN)
For a believer, not much. It's that classic problem that Christianity (and likely, Judaism) has had since the beginning: what is meant to be taken as literal truth and what is allegory, metaphor, or a Bronze age nomad's way of expressing a Divine vision of something like the Big Bang, Planet Formation, or Evolution. It's fine to debate such things as long as you don't forget you're arguing over a relatively small portion of the first book of the Bible: as long as you agree on the broad strokes (God created all, He created Man in His image, and gave Man a Paradise which he preceded to screw up by disobeying, introducing Original Sin, thereby causing Man to be evicted from Paradise and necessitating Jesus's sacrifice) its ultimately academic. I think the Young Earth/Anti-Evolution side of it tends to become a bit obsessed with proving themselves right at times, though. Trying to prove an article of faith, especially via science, is folly. At the worst, they elevate their interpretation into a defacto article of faith. You really lose me, as a believer, when you start questioning my faith and insulting me for thinking those first few chapters were about making a few key points in a way a Bronze Age nomad would understand. And yes, I have run into this type of person. For the "I LOVE science sexually!" type, the type for whom "Science" (Meaning Left Wing Neo-Lysenkoism, Global Warming, etc), it's just another way to slander all believers and marginalize them to the rest of the country. The more radical elements of the Young Earth Creationist side makes their job much easier. (Thanks Ken Ham!)

A lot of them don't really believe it, it's more of an intentional denial because they cannot deal with the cognitive dissonance that admitting it's a child would cause.

That's why you get crazy studies on gendering your child while still in the womb is bad, lefty shows/stories like "Six Feet Under" where an aborted child's ghost visits its mom, or the longtime favorite: female character deciding to not abort magically transforms the fetus into a baby while still in her womb. I was watching a propaganda free Science show yesterday about the Emperor Penguin of the Antarctic. The adults (five year old and higher) have to traipse 70 miles over fresh ice to reach their ancient ancestral breeding grounds on firm ground. Many times, back and forth, over a six month period. Year after year.

Everything is timed exactly so that when the young reach a certain age of about five months the ice has all melted and the ocean is at their doorstep. Because the young would never survive a 70 mile hike. I was expecting the usual AGW bullshit at the end but there was none. Most likely because it would be a huge benefit to the adults to not have to traipse across that fresh 70 miles of ice every year.

I agree with the LGBQTXYZ's that 'gender' is a societal 'construct', i.e., as a state of being, it has no serious meaning beyond a literary usage.

If the topic comes up, I say just that. If the other party in the conversation is an SJW, they quickly begin to stumble over their rationalizations.

That's culture, not brains. It's why native Japanese actually do have trouble distinguishing L and R sounds, and why I can't wrap my head around tonal languages, and why feral kids raised by wolves often never get the hang of human interaction. It's not about what makes up your brain, it's more about how your environment develops it.

I remember the thalidomide babies. However, it seems the Left does not, because they are endorsing allowing children as young as six to be drenched in the opposite chemicals required by their growing bodies in order to satisfy a mental illness. I see bad things coming from this: cancers, shortened life spans, regret, and so on and so forth.

375 WRT Transhumanists and "evolution":

Yeah, just about everyone gets evolution wrong. I even have transhumanist sympathies myself (at least in terms of believing that knowledge and technology are just about the only things going for humanity, and also probably capable of solving a great many of our problems.) But all this 'next step in evolution' stuff is ridiculous.

The whole point of mankind as intelligent beings is that we don't have to wait for a few thousand generations of people to mutate and for the 'unfit' to die off to have a solution to a problem handed to us by an unthinking optimization process. We can change our minds: Change the thoughts in our heads, in a self directed process, of our own free will. We can actively solve problems, then build tools to implement the solutions. Reason, the main paradigm shift, already happened about a million years ago - it's just taken time to build up steam.

We aren't going to 'evolve' - if we're doing things right, we'll use technology to abolish any future problems (disease, disability, maybe one day even old age), and banish natural selection as an influence over man. If we screw up, then the next generation of civilization will eventually get it. It's inconceivable that mankind would exist in such brutal stasis, subject to random death for physical infirmity, for the hundreds-of-thousands of years it would take for 'nature to provide'.

The Koran says (like the Bible) that the world was created in 6 days, but the word used in Arabic for "day" can be translated somewhat like "epoch" or "period" which can be up to 50,000 days long, according to my reading and some Mullahs teaching.

That still only makes the world somewhat around 310,000 years old, since they teach that Adam was put on earth 7,000 years ago -- or at least, used to until recently.

As I noted, they've changed their tune, in public, to the West. How they teach in private I doubt has changed, particularly in places like Iran and Syria.

382 Can I just agree that the sign is stupid. Fear the rightThe earth is not 6000 years old." Gee, did they take a poll of everyone of the right to ask them how old the earth is?. Get a clue, idiot. There are many fine people of religious faith who believe in evolution and even fine people who don't believe in evolution as formulated by Darwin (a lot of missing pieces there) and STILL don't think the earth is 6.000 years old.

396 I honestly believe that had religion not taken a side in the whole evolution debate, much of it would have been discarded over time just through scientific consensus.

But because this is an epic battle where two sides have dug in, the scientific community will only attempt to batter the "knuckle draggers"

417 Best news in the French primary elections today is the hilarious vote totals of the Socialist Candidate:

Benoit Hamon, Socialist - 6%

And remember that the the current president of France, Hollande, is from that same Socialist Party. It would be the equivalent of a standing Democrat president getting 6% of the national vote.

The other commie, Melanchon, got about 18%. Overall, the left in France has basically collapsed, from being the majority not too long ago to being borderline fringies -- similar to the Labor party's collapse in England.

The bad news is that the boring no-ideas "centrist" without a party, Macron, will probably win the general election over Le Pen, because the ENTIRE political system and media are allied against her.

419 My problem with a lot of science is that in the name of short hand and the result of sloppy, ignorant reporters, stuff that should be stated as "we estimate based on present evidence..." is stated "SCIENCE DECLARES" in absolute terms. The age of the planet for instance. Nobody knows.

The best guess is hundreds of millions of years old, but there's this cone of uncertainty like tracking a hurricane, the further into the past you get, the less you can be sure of something, because more and more events, changes, and forces you can't have predicted or guessed about are taking place.

The earth appears according to modern science to be very, very old, many millions of years. That's the best anyone can say.

But you get absolute, total certainty statements, and worse, absolute contempt and derision toward anyone who has a doubt or believe that differs from this. Its just not known well enough to be so reeking with arrogance and spittle-flecked mockery the way people are about it.

I think on an individual level, fear of chaos is actually a big motivator for AGW proponents. I look at my brother, who went banana-cuckoo-nutso over AGW and I see a man with no core spiritual faith, a personal life in disarray (ugly divorce, lost his medical license due to unprofessional conduct, depression, alcohol abuse) and it gives him something to hang his emotional hat on. In my own life, losing my father-in-law (disappeared without a trace) and the 'unfairness' inflicted on families who have children born with major birth defects have reinforced the seeming randomness of life, and my wife and I are okay with (accepting of) that. 460 I think on an individual level, fear of chaos is actually a big motivator for AGW proponents.

I agree, I think for many of the non-climatologist types (and probably some of them, too) its about control and trying to make things not be different. There's a reason they all base their ideal climate on "what it was like when I was young." Its this bizarre form of quasi-scientific nostalgia.

463 A quick reminder:

Liberals adore quoting Dwight Eisenhower (whom they had viscerally hated while he was alive and in office), on the subject of the risks to the public interest posed by the "military-industrial complex".

That line is from Ike's farewell address, the reading of which I commend to all of you. It has stood the test of time.

What liberals do *not* want to quote or remember is that Eisenhower also warned against extensive Federal funding for science resulting in the capture of public policy, against the public interest, by a "scientific-technological elite".

I'm nearing completion of my 60th trip in orbit around the sun and can say that I participated in a protest march just once. It was the spring of 1976 and my state college had proposed an increase in tuition & fees, so a big bunch of us trundled down to the State House to protest. My particular interest in this march was fueled by a certain attractive co-ed that I thought was hot for me; she was one of the ringleaders and I figured she'd be super impressed with my commitment to the cause.

As it turns out, I was mistaken, she was hot for some other dude. I did manage to get baked, for free, though. Which was nice.

482 Hello #452, this may be true of liberals in general. Before I found this site, I used to read a liberal site (that changed topics frequently), and even before Trump they hated the world, especially the white world--which was rather strange because when they posted photos of their meetups, the only brown person in sight would be the waiter. There is a non-trivial percentage of white people who hate...white people, and I'm sure that if they ever get the race war they want, all the non-whites will instantly perceive that these particular whites are on the Side of Righteousness. Sure they will.

Anyway, most of these folks seemed to have no grounding in life. They are desperately seeking something to believe in and so far, all they seem to have found is abortion, racism, and Hillary Clinton.

I should point out they're not all bad--they routinely take up collections for good causes. But you definitely don't want people that troubled running things.

501 The tweeted photo is simplistic and problematic. What separates the two lists is the ideas on the right photo are all testable by controlled experimentation. Those on the right are not. Rather, the latter rely wholly on observations of uncontrollable events and extrapolation of simple concepts to complex situations which may not be applicable. It may still be proven that the observations supporting evolution and the earth's age are wrong, though carbon dating is pretty accurate. However, as noted above, correlation does not imply causation, and there is no evidence, let alone proof, that a relatively small concentration of CO2 can significantly effect the earth's climate.

Posted by: daveSF at April 23, 2017 04:30 PM (/mMiN)

502 I agree with everything on both signs. Relatively few people on the right think the world is 6000 years old. Climate change is certainly real. As for the cause, well, 99.999% of the climate change that has happened in the history of the Earth has had nothing to do with humans. Even today, human impact is smaller than noise.

That said, the left sign doesn't actually contain any useful information. You don't need to know about the age of the Earth, evolution, or climate change in any decision in your life. At most the climate change question would modesty affect your investment in government policy. The sign on the right, everything impacts decisions relevant to living your life, the least useful being nuclear- but as energy prices are highly relevant to the cost of everything else, still highly relevant, though again, mainly on public policy.

Posted by: Infidel de Manahatta at April 23, 2017 04:53 PM (ucIu7)

504 It's not that I don't believe in science. It's that I don't believe that if you had the quality of data you say you have, you'd be spending big money in court trying to keep others from examining it. Since you can totally destroy that argument at any time by simply stopping doing that, but keep on anyway, I am going to keep on not believing you.

Here's a good story I heard but cannot vouch for.

Seems this photographer who was in love with pictures of coastlines came across a 100-year-old photo collection of the coast of California. He was in heaven just looking through it, but soon noticed that the beauty of many of the photo locales had been despoiled by seaside development.

Being a conservationist, he decide to re-shoot the entire collection of shots as they appear today, to show the change and hopefully prevent further ruin. Since this was beyond his ability to personally finance, he prepared a before-and-after sampler portfolio to use to seek funding.

He decided to go for the best and submitted his work to a highly regarded nature society. When they said they wanted to sponsor him he was ecstatic. All that remained was establishing the contract. All the legal stuff went smoothly with the lawyers, until only the final approvals from the top management of the society remained. Suddenly there was a brick wall - nobody would sign off. Ultimately his portfolio was returned with a polite but uninformative rejection letter.

The photographer was not only disappointed but frustrated that nobody would give him an explanation of the sudden loss of interest. Finally a friend of a friend managed to get at the answer from a well-placed insider. Apparently a big celebrity sponsor was shown the project, and pointed out that in the hundred years between the photos, there was no noticeable change in sea level. Even when the photos were not taken at the same tide level, the high tide marks were visible in both, and virtually identical.

So the bottom line was: no global warming, no funding! How many time do you think that has happened with researchers and government or philanthropists? I suspect hundreds of times!

506 Scientists lie and they lie for money and will lie until their tongue turns black. They will create as many adult fairy stories as they can to get as much money out of the common man that they can. These people at this time appear to be trying to set themselves up as the New Middle Ages Catholic Church, full of white-instead of red-robed scientific cardinals creating dogma and threatening to destroy anyone who questions them or their findings.

Most people, wanting a peaceful life, will go along with it because it simply isn't relevant to the living of their life and some of it aligns with how they want the world to be, whether it is or not. But my thinking is that this is all coming to a head and ready or not, reality is going to come crashing in on their constructed reality. Hence the marches to bolster their position before the roof caves in.

I'd personally rather see them start teaching logic and critical thinking starting in grade school, because right now that will be more useful than a lot of the stuff they want to teach them. And I say that as a bible believing christian.
