Saturday Evening Movie Thread 04-22-2017 [Hosted By: TheJamesMadison]

Let's Talk About Star Wars

Okay, not actually Star Wars, but stuff like this:

I think that you people know that I love movies in general quite a bit more than most. I watch a lot of stuff of a wide variety.

You may also be able to guess that I got into movies through stuff like Star Wars. I was obsessed with the original trilogy. I read the Expanded Universe novels. Hell, in about 6th grade I tried my first hand at novel writing with a Star Wars novel (I'm pretty sure it was really terrible and I'm very glad that I can't find it). I went a bit nuts when the first trailer for The Phantom Menace came out. I went to go see 13 Days, a movie I had no interest in, just so that I could see the trailer.

I was also 13 years old at the time.

I picked this guy's video at random, and I don't want to cast judgment on the guy's mental state. Neither should you. However, having never heard of this guy before, seen any of his videos, or met him in person, all I have to go on with him is this video. And he cries at the trailer for The Last Jedi. He…Cries.

Excitement

I was talking to some fellow Morons a couple of weeks ago where we talked about the Star Wars movies and Marvel movies. The part of that conversation that got me moving on this topic was how What's a Seawolf? said that he was super excited by the Thor: Ragnarok trailer. Others said that they were pretty much in line already for the trailer.

Don't get me wrong, the movie definitely looks fun. I'll eventually see it (having a 3 year old and a wife who's lost complete interest in super hero movies makes it unlikely that I'll see it in theaters), but I just don't feel that same kind of excitement anymore. The last time I felt it was probably with The Return of the King.

It's not a bad trailer. The fact that it was well made had little to do with the excitement I felt at the time. It was well made enough to not cause problems, but my excitement was really tied to my overall emotions towards the franchise. No, I didn't cry, but I do remember the tightness in my stomach that I felt. I was also 18 years old.

I'm not trying to pass judgment on anyone who sees a movie trailer and feels that same level of excitement that I haven't felt in more than a decade. I'm actually kind of jealous. I want to feel that same level of excitement again (well…I don't want to cry at a movie trailer, but you get me). I seem to have lost the ability to get excited like that.

Apathy or Something Else?

Is it apathy? Do I just not care about new movies? The most excited I've gotten recently over a movie was probably when I found the money to spend on Chimes at Midnight, the Orson Welles telling of Fallstaff's tale from Shakespeare. That movie is decades old, and I had seen it before, but I was excited in a way that was similar to when I first saw that The Return of the King trailer.

Another close one was the trailer for Silence by Martin Scorsese.

I watched that trailer repeatedly when it first came online. I also found a way to go to the theater for the one week that the movie was in cinemas.

Maybe it's the value of entertainment to me. The Marvel movies are entertaining. The new Star Wars movies are entertaining. Most big budget movies these days are entertaining. Most big budget movies are corporate products that are well oiled machines and designed to entertain. Very, very few seem to break out in my mind and become experiences that actually speak to the human condition. I feel that Captain America: The Winter Soldier did do that, but that was an unexpected surprise in the middle of all the relatively samey effect of the rest of the Marvel movies. I see the sea of movies coming out over the next year, and I just see things that are aiming to entertain, and that's about it.

I'm Looking for Greatness

Maybe the reason I'm not feeling anything close to the same experience as that guy in the first video is because we're looking for different things. He's very likely looking for entertainment and nostalgia from the new Star Wars movies. I'm looking for a movie that, no matter it's connections to my childhood or iconography that's familiar, hits on an emotional level that makes me feel something new.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi may be that experience, but it's trailer is not designed to sell that. It's designed to sell that nostalgic connection between the audience and their childhood as well as bright colorful action. We're getting a lot of that these days, and placing the Star Wars packaging on top of that core doesn't make the effect either more or less powerful for me.

I knew that Silence was going to be a movie going experience that was going to hit me hard on its own (and it totally was…you need to see that movie), but all Star Wars is telling me about itself is that it's going to have Luke Skywalker, familiar music, and lightsabers. Yay.

But then again…I'm a snooty asshole.

Good on you, my friend. Just messing.

I too would identify Return of the King as the last movie I was genuinely excited to see.

I enjoyed it at the time, until the end of the film, where Jackson completely eliminates the retaking of the Shire, which is a central part of the story and not just some sort of extended denouement.

The worst part of the Hobbit movies is that they have successfully ruined for me the re-watchability of the original LOTR. Jackson should be retroactively stripped of his Oscar and the actual statue should be melted down and sold for scrap to feed starving children somewhere.

Posted by: TheQuietMan at April 22, 2017 07:48 PM (auHtY)

30 Piker.

But perhaps more usefully, the reason you don't get as excited now isn't (just) age, probably, but the glut of entertainment options available.

Entertainment used to be scarcer and of lower quality. You think you got excited around the turn of the century about movies? Imagine how people got in 1980 when "Empire" was announced.

Another reason is that one does get burned. One gets excited at the prospect of, say, "Return of the King", only to find out that it was a tedious, soulsucking extension of the same superhero crap the studios had been peddling (for only about 5 years, actually, but it seemed like forever even back then).

I see 150+ movies a year in the theater--that's my snobbery, I don't watch them on TV, or hardly anything on TV--but I don't get excited at trailers, generally speaking. I do get excited at, e.g., "Casablanca" coming on the local revival calendar, and taking my kids to see it.

Things change.

43 Damn it. I wanted to go into the trailer hating Thor. But it looks really good. Chris Helmsworth goes a great job with the part. He has good comedic presence.

That's the thing with the Marvel Franchise, starting with the core group of Ironman, they have done an excellent job of casting the parts.

I want to hate it but I'll have to wait until The final two movie Averengers Infinity with the 60 or so cast members.

The disappointments and the movies falling short are Antman, and the second Thor, and the second Avengers. I have not seen Dr. Strange.

You have to give them credit and props, they did not fuck it up...... Unlike what the DC universe always does. Except for Nolans Dark Knight trilogy.

48 I really want to see "Silence," but having been to Japan and being a Christian, I think it'll be hard to watch.

I've always been a fan of Led Zepplin's "Immigrant Song," but wow, the use of it for the Thor trailer is pure genius.

And I got chills down my spine for the ROTK trailer, even though it's been 15 years. Such a great movie.

56 I saw The Lost City of Z yesterday, the story of British explorer Percy Fawcett's expeditions to Amazonia and his belief that there was at one time a civilization in the heart of the jungle, based on tribal anecdote and pottery shards. Later discoveries seem to bear this out:

"In the very area where Fawcett believed he would find the City of Z, Heckenberger and his team of researchers had discovered more than twenty pre-Columbian settlements. These settlements, which were occupied roughly between 800 and 1600 A.D., included houses and moats and palisade walls. There were geometrically-aligned causeways and roads, and plazas laid out along cardinal points, from east to west. According to Heckenberger, each cluster of settlements contained anywhere from two thousand to five thousand people, which means that the larger communities were the size of many medieval European cities."

The movie itself is kind of plodding and episodic, but Charlie Hunnam is very good as Fawcett, as is Robert Pattinson as his assistant. The photography is beautiful and I like the use of Ravel's lush Daphnis and Chloe.

It is sometimes jarringly modern in its outlook, and occasionally preachy.

Everything is better on the big screen. Everything. Comedies are funnier. Horrors are scarier. Romances are weepier. Everything.

I never realized how great Planet of the Apes was until I saw it last year on the big screen. I could never sit through 2001 when it was on TV, but it was fairly compelling on the big screen. (Even the last act holds one's attention, spacey as it is.)

While you're doubtless right, leave us not pretend that the new "Star Wars" movie won't be exactly like the =last= "Star Wars" movie.

They will bland it to death. But it'll take decades to kill, probably. How long did it take Paramount to kill the "Star Trek" franchise? 20 years?

78 More trailer: I gave my parents a heads-up when the The Finest Hours trailer popped up before a Youtube video because it seemed right up their alley. I was expecting it to be melodramatic and effects-heavy, rated aah for New England accents, and it was all those things, but it was also based on a real act of selfless rescue that happened the year they were born. So it was neat to see the period cars and clothes, and while it wasn't particularly a masterpiece, it was fun as hell to watch and that has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE CONFUSING FEELINGS I GET SEEING CHRIS PINE ON SCREEN WHO EVEN TOLD YOU THAT

99 Thursdays are Movie Night for Mrs IMG and I. One of the Cinemarks near us did a huge refurb late last year and all seats in all theaters are electric recliners.

Tickets are for specific seats and pre-paid entry is a 2 second scan of the smart phone. This is a huge improvement for us. No arriving insanely early to make sure of getting a decent seat. You pick your seat when you buy the tix (online or at the box office). So, we buy early and get there just in time for trailers, opting out of the ad spots.

We love the big screen. I think, if we had enough free wall space, Mrs IMG would talk me into one of the curved 65" 4K screens she fondles when we at at Best Buy.

Antman turned me off because of the message it sends about fathers and rubs fathers faces in this message. So he is trying to keep a job he is overqualified for but can't because of a bullshit white collar crime. He has a daughter who loves him. His ex wife and her new husband alienate him from his daughter saying you are not welcome here unless you get a job and pay the toll.

So he falls into Antman and this is the only way he can be the hero and father allowed in his daughters life. Then he submits and admits he was wrong and acts like a total Cuck to his ex wife and her husband in front of his daughter.

That's the message. And it's unrealistic yet highlights the very real shit fathers face and Disney rubs our nose in it.

So fuck Antman.

152 Derptastic--

The thing about seeing the old movies again is which ones hold up SFX-wise. It's interesting. Everything looks fake in short order, so the movies whose SFX still work are the ones that work on an artistic level.

Forbidden Planet, Planet of the Apes, most of Temple of Doom, Blade Runner--not a great movie but a beautiful one, Aliens. That stuff holds up. Jaws (except for the final shark attack), too. Robocop, surprisingly well.

Once you get into CGI years, it tends to look both fakey and cruddy.

Recently the blogger -- who is a professional movie and TV guy -- was looking at upcoming movies and wasn't impressed by Dunkirk. He said he can't figure out how you can make an exciting movie out of a bunch of guys running away (his words, approximately; not mine).

I have difficulty understanding how a person can think that way.

160 All Hail Eris--

It's a perfect riffing movie, it's so oddly incompetent. The boys did a great job.

I found it jarring because it was filmed in my town and they would be in a house deep in the hills, then seem to just wander out back to the ocean...or pan left from city hall to China town...

Some people can't watch anything that doesn't look like the latest-and-greatest-technology. Me, I love the old Flash Gordon serials, with the art deco spaceships and sparklers in the back.

Oh, that was another one that surprised me, a bit. Though quite a few of the big composite shots are rough, the 1980 "Flash Gordon" holds up surprisingly well. The set designs are beautiful.

189 First: thanks, TJM, for the movie threads on Saturdays. I'm really enjoying them.

Most movie trailers do nothing for me. Even being the comic book geek that I am, the trailer for Thor: Ragnarok didn't excite me. I think it's because there's a lot of "been there, done that" for me not only for superhero movies, but films in general.

That being said, I am going to see Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 on opening weekend, but I would do that without seeing the trailer. I enjoyed the characters in the last movie, and I want to see if they can catch lightning in the bottle twice.

234 Okay, let's talk about Star Wars {1977}. It was a breath of fresh air after all the anti-hero films of the 60's and 70's. It made movies fun again, pure entertainment without some schmo trying to guilt the audience into a deep message. Good triumphed over evil was message enough for me and the day. I would welcome a board where we could share films and discuss films.

That is not to say that I do not appreciate films with a message, such A Man For All Seasons {1966} or The Mission {1986}, both written by Robert Bolt.

The following films had emotional impact upon me: The Best Years of Our Lives; Anna and The King of Siam {1946}; Penny Serenade {1941}; On Borrowed Time {1939}; and Golden Boy {1939}, to name a few.

Check out Gunga Din {1939} to see what inspired Temple of Doom. If you know anything about PTSD, once known as shell shock, check out Random Harvest, a huge hit in its day, but largely forgotten today in our information age.

I loved LA Confidential {1997}, where the three protagonists all become what they hate before starting down the road to redemption.

I find that the best movies are often based upon plays. I think this is because plays must be a good story at heart and are dialogue driven.

270 Star Wars are among the worst movie plots ever released. The first three were so-so and the rest were AWFUL!

Lucas is among the worst story-tellers in the history of modern cinema. There are plot holes big enough to sail Nimitz carriers through in every one of the Star Wars movies. The last movie was nothing but recycled scenes lifted from the first 3 movies. Go back and watch them again and you can identify scenes lifted from other movies.

I doubt I will ever pay to see another Star Wars movie. Literally, if you have seen the first three you have seen them all.

Posted by: WarEagle82 at April 22, 2017 09:16 PM (xUc0d)

271 musical jolly chimp--

I wouldn't trust a thing Lucas says about "Star Wars" today. The prequels--and honestly, "Return of the Jedi"--showed that he never understood it very well. (Worse, say, than Roddenberry understood Trek.)

Even back in the day, the number of movies he "planned" for this clearly one-off film-that-maybe-might-get-a-sequel changed at seeming random. (At one point, he claimed 12.)

He also said "Star Wars" was an analogy for the Vietnam War, and you can guess which role the USA played in that allegory.

I wonder if I will be as disturbed by it as I was by the original story by Melville. On a related note, don't tell me they made a movie out of "The Man Who Was Thursday" by G.K. Chesterton. I would say this guy's mental fitness is anything but solid. Not just the fact that he cried nor that he posted himself crying for the world to see, but the entire picture - the state of his hair n beard, the tattoos, the statements he made at the outset of "training people to be cool." It just all reeks of several tweaks off zeroed in.

287 There's an excellent book, "Disasters of the Deep" by Edwyn Gray. It covers just about every known submarine accident in history. (It does not cover submarine combat or wartime losses.)

Along the way, it manages to be a history of the evolution of submarine technology, and there are gripping moments of drama and tales of courage and tragedy. Most of the accidents discussed are practically forgotten today.

OK, it's not a movie and this ain't the book thread, but someone mentioned submarines, so there you go.

Empire strikes back - I was 7. Week before I watched New Hope twice. The over marketing of Marvel and SW is giving Disney Diabetes.

327 Speaking of Andrew Garfield and movies that affected us, I recently watched a movie he was in called "Never Let Me Go". It also had Keira Knightly and Casey Mulligan.

I had no idea what it was about. I just have liked Garfield in most movies he has been in and I think Knightly and Mulligan are kinda cute. It was on HDMOV Channel, so I figured, why not. DVR'd it.

Wow, what a messed up story! Starts out innocently enough, following these characters in their early teen years at a boarding school. But then a new teacher finds out exactly what the school is all about and decides to tell the young teens that their futures have all been planned out for them. I won't say anything more than that about it, to not give it away.

I guess I watched it like any other movie, expecting that there was some happy ending coming. It seemed to be leading up to that. But... well... I'll leave it at that.

But I have to say, while I went away from the movie thinking I just wasted my time watching it, I haven't stopped thinking about it since I watched it last weekend. There's the overall storyline of these teens having their futures already planned out. Then there is the human part of it, the interaction between the characters as young teens, older teens and young adults. Of course there is a love triangle.

The one scene that got me was when one of the characters had kept something one of the other characters had given them when they were young teens. The character took that item out when they wanted to remember better times or comfort themselves.

Made me think about how I do similar things in my life to comfort myself and remember better times in my life.

Same for me, go figure. I was 4. Although I saw it at a Drive-In with my uncle and his friends. I remember being as excited about being at a Drive-In as I was about seeing a cool movie.

329 Never Let Me Go is a morose little film. I liked it.

333 Other than the first teaser trailer, which was just the fellowship walking past a rock outcropping, I don't even remember the Lord of the Rings trailers...

On the other hand, I have very clear memories of the first 300 trailer. Man, that was a work of art unto itself!

335 Ah damn, got a name drop on a week I couldn't make it.

Great post as usual TJM.

I think our differences in feelings for Marvel movies/trailers and excitement levels stem from a similar source.

General apathy and boredom towards Hollywood and what they've been making. But we both love movies in general and are seeking entertainment and being 'wowed.'

Marvel fills that niche for me that the rest of Hollywood abandoned (both for political and lack of talent reasons.) They may not be the greatest movies, some may have similarities, and they certainly don't do for me what Star Wars did for me as a kid.

BUT they are very entertaining, deliver, and (however loosely or not) are connected. I think that last part is HUGE in why myself and family/friends have made seeing Marvel movies an event.

We KNOW we will see laughs, a solid story, and something that is part of a BIGGER story. Something to keep us talking and guessing and speculating.

Marvel movies don't work for you as they do for me, but you'll find something to fill the entertainment void left by Hollywood selling out entirely. It's just a matter of that right thing coming along.

336 He's actually younger than me.

And I thought I was the baby (well, Seawolf, really....)

And yes, until someone proves differently, I am the resident AoS baby, and I ain't giving away the title easily.

337 23 I certainly didn't cry, but the trailer for Logan was amazing. And I saw the movie opening night, an experience somewhat sullied by some moron behind me who kept blurting out her emotional reactions during the movie. So I saw it again during the week when the theater was deserted. The last time I remember seeing a movie twice in the theater was Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, 17 years ago.

Great movie, quite possibly the best of the superhero/comic-book movies.

Any trailer with Johnny Cash's "Hurt" is a going to be a gut-puncher, and that was particularly meaningful in the Logan trailer.

338 Qdpsteve brought up "Streets of Fire"- I was really into that movie when it came out. Michael Pare and Diane Lane were at their hottest, I loved the vague futuristic dystopia (we don't have to explain nuthin'), and I loved the soundtrack. I still have they vinyl, and crank it every once in a while. I should rewatch it and see if it holds up for me.

339 13 Days was a good movie.

I've also thought about why I lack that excitement I used to have at watching some movies, or seeing their trailers. I see you touched on it for a moment: I think it's simply because we've already breached all those excitement levels, and once breached, they can't be re-breached. Our sensitivity decreases each time we have one of those experiences, or better yet, actual real-life experiences that put those imaginative ones into perspective. Seeing new, younger folk going through their own brings about a sense of derision (because our moments were so much better, and they were, to us), but also envy, as you said.

Perhaps some stories have the potential to move us again, given the right combination of references to our past with projections associated with our own sense of direction or meaning in life. This next Star Wars movie might have had the potential, but after seeing The Force Awakens, I'm kind of doubting it. TFA was a big let-down, and I couldn't fully put my hand on it until I read Ace's review which articulated it (in a very angry but truthful way). So we'll see. I don't hold my breath anymore. I've got new frontiers in my life now. The excitement and meaning that video games and movies used to give me are only good but distant memories now, and their current counterparts hardly fill those memories' shoes.
