Thread before the gardening thread: Oz in April [KT]

It's elementary.

Has autumn (in Australia) brought out a bit of attention to reality? Australia unveils major changes to citizenship process. Via Maggie's Farm:

Aspiring citizens will undergo tougher tests on their English language skills and ability to demonstrate "Australian values", PM Malcolm Turnbull said.

Applicants must also have completed four years as a permanent resident - three years longer than at present.

The move comes two days after Australia unveiled stricter visa requirements for skilled workers from overseas.

Mr Turnbull said the changes would ensure that migrants were better integrated into the community. . . .

Sounds to me like some of the "Australian values" noted could be adopted as "American values", too.

Maybe reality started to set in (in Australia, I mean) a while ago. Remember when Obama agreed to have prospective immigrants to Australia who were being stored, sort of, on a little island shipped to the USA?

Tim Blair notices what's going on even in Pakistan.

Pick up your game, western university students. You may be bossy and judgemental, but your Pakistani counterparts are setting a standard that lazy Westerners just cannot equal.

13 My friend who looks after the local stray (but neutered-she had them neutered) cats asked me to feed them today. No problem. She is going with her husband to an Earth day "March for Science" gathering in NYC. She sent a bunch of people a text, "On our way to the March for Science" with a picture of the sign she will be holding. Someone tweeted back. "Great sign; Sorry I can't be there too." I love my friend but I did not tweet back a snarky reply and was happy I couldn't read the sign, since I have a phone which is very very old and pictures either don't show up or show up badly. Last year I told the founder of Earth Day murdered his girlfriend and shoved her in a trunk. She did not know that.

He is less tired but they moved him from "picking" (Placing items that come down a conveyer belt thing into a container) to packing, perhaps because he probably wasn't able to pack 625 items in an hour although they didn't tell him that. Management is non existent at Amazon. I'm sure they're working hard-they just don't have interaction with new employees.I just this is not a move to fire him altogether but other people got moved to the packing section too.

Thanks for asking.

21 Two Minnesota Democrats just voted for Life Insurance Payouts to Suicide Bombers.

Rep. Ilhan Omar, the first Somali Refugee legislator and Rep. John Lesch want blood money to flow to terrorists' families after they kill you and your neighbors. That's a kind of treason. Funding terrorists is an odd position for Lesch, a Guardsman who wants to be Attorney General. He once proposed vicious dog legislation--but now supports vicious human legislation. And it's damned ungrateful by Omar--is this her thanks for America's refuge? Paying people to kill Americans?

It's tough to change careers when you are older. Without the energy and optimism of youth , it is a struggle for an experienced person to get sync'd up with the repetitive grind.

Even after I got employed , I maintained that moving to the next level internally or externally, upwardly or laterally was still my part time job. I still have my eyes open and keep the lines open in the network. You never know.

Having experienced it myself I truly hope that he finds peace and contentment with whatever he decides to do. No salary is high enough to replace that.

She has a sign outside her house. It's the one in Spanish, English and Arabic, "No matter where you're from we're glad you're our neighbor" which is an egregiously stupid sign in her case. She's lived there for 26 years. She's a very kind woman and knows all her neighbors. She helps them clean up when their sump pump breaks down. She helps to snow plow their driveways. She's a surrogate grandmother for two little girls-the grandparents of whom are pretty much uninvolved. She KNOWS her neighbors-none of whom-as far as I know speak Arabic or Spanish as their native language and all of whom could read the sign even if it were entirely in English.

It has had sling swivels installed (and later removed), which is probably an indication of military or militia service, as most folks rode horses for serious traveling and accordingly very few civilian guns in the US were made with sling swivels. Soldier, OTOH, walked long distances, and sling swivels were a standard military design feature for that reason.

So, I think it probably was used in the Revolution.

The most egregiously stupid leftists I know here in California - ponder that statement for a minute - are ALL from Minnesota. I bet every one of them thinks that life insurance payouts to suicide bombers is a great idea.

234 I don't think I was misleading. I said "Two Minnesota Democrats just voted for Life Insurance Payouts to Suicide Bombers."

These two voted against limiting payouts like the San Bernardino killers tried to give to their mom *wink wink*. That was the impetus for this bill. It's not a limitation on innocent bystanders injuries.

A bill for an act relating to life insurance; limitation on payments to beneficiaries of persons furthering terrorism; amending Minnesota Statutes 2016, section 61A.09, by adding a subdivision.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Section 1. Minnesota Statutes 2016, section 61A.09, is amended by adding a subdivision
to read:

Subd. 5. Limitation on payment due to furtherance of terrorism. (a) For purposes
of this subdivision, "further terrorism" has the meaning given in section 609.714.

(b) Notwithstanding section 61A.03, subdivision 1, paragraph (c), a policy of group life
insurance issued for delivery in this state may limit payment to a beneficiary to the amount
of premiums that have been paid to the insurer under the policy if the insured's death occurs
directly or indirectly as a result of the insured's furtherance of terrorism.

(c) Conviction of a crime in violation of section 609.714 is not necessary for any court
of competent jurisdiction to determine by a preponderance of evidence whether a terrorist
act has occurred for the purpose of this section.

In fact, in the past Trump has tweaked the tone of rallies by having different sorts of guest/warm-up speakers - he could give this one a vets twist if desired.

Anything to maximize the contrast between the dinner - Beltway Class event nobody outside the NPR demo has ever cared about or respected - and a rally with regular Americans, focused on issues with broad heartland appeal.

In any case, beautiful.

But where I only suspected air-headedness I now have positive confirmation of that and probably worse.

Science is never settled. Ever. One of the bedrocks of physics was conservation of parity (in essence, symmetry), which was in the same pantheon as conservation of energy (now energy/mass) and of momentum.

Until 1956. Two Chinese guys at NBS proved that Co-60 nuclei emit more gamma rays up than down (IIRC). One trip to Stockholm later, physics textbooks were revised to 86 conservation of parity.

And that's hard-core, no shit physics, not the crap the leftists are pushing.

300 My ancestors fled the endless waring and famines and whatnot in Europe only in the 20th century or very late 19th and went to the Dakotas because that was where land could still be bought affordably. So my outsider analysis of the war of northern aggression. Slave owners (the Soros of the day) bought lots of news stories to get folks on board to secede in the south just because a Republican abolitionist had been elected. If they had not been so hard headed perhaps slaves would have been declared indentured servants and free after 10-15 years and as history later showed that the south worked fine with share croppers or wage paid black labor, so all that angst or and spilled blood was not needed to keep the southern economy from going tits up. However many of the southern soldiers were very honorable.

OTOH the abolitionists were sure that ending slavery was god's work and the ends justified the means when it proved difficult to win the war. So forced drafts, stomping on states and individual rights etc. and we are less free as a nation today after all that crap. They probably should have let the south go.

All of it is water long long under the bridge now. The nation fought a (un)civil war and came through it, worse off but not destroyed. I'm still damn glad I was born in the USA vs anywhere else in the world and I still want the vile leftists who dislike this country to slither off to Europe or Canada since they claim those places are more fair and enlightened.
