Open Thread and Some Things of Marginal Importance

Some stuff, a lot of it from Twitter, where the real stupid happens:

A Blue Checkmark Mafia idiot says the GOP rigged Benghazi to hurt Hillary Clinton in the election.

Louise Mensch, who is so good at politics she successfully served as a Member of Parliament from 2010 all the way until her resignation in 2012, spends her days now nuttering about reds under the beds. Even Buzzfeed, which has led many Social Justice Warrior scalp-hunting parties against innocent nobodies, thinks she's a bit promiscuous with her many, many allegations.

Since last November’s election, the former British politician Louise Mensch has transformed herself into the leader of a wide-ranging internet investigation into Russian espionage and influence in American politics, media, and business. Every day, Mensch and her network of online detectives unravel what they claim is a massive conspiracy linking the Kremlin, the Republican party, armies of internet trolls, and moneyed puppet-masters around the world.

Mensch, who sometimes tweets hundreds of times a day, has claimed or implied that targets ranging from top government officials to journalists to teenagers to anonymous twitter users are in thrall to Vladimir Putin.

Just since inauguration day, according to an extensive review of her tweets, the New York-based Mensch has accused at least 210 people and organizations of being under Russian government influence....

Mensch’s list includes 35 American politicians and government officials, 26 journalists, 26 organizations and corporations (among them think tanks, banks, media outlets, foreign intelligence agencies, and security firms), 18 Russians, 18 US citizens notable for political donations or affiliations, 80 low-profile Twitter accounts Mensch has characterized as "Putinbots" or similar (many of which appear to belong to Americans who support President Trump), and two British politicians. The list includes figures as disparate as Bernie Sanders and Sean Hannity.

Via @EsotericCD.

By the way, if you wish to learn more about the mindthoughts of this former chic-lit-writer-turned-spyhunter, you can read her brilliant essay "Dear Mr. Putin, Let's Play Chess."

Are the elites once again whistling past the graveyard in declaring confidently that LePen can't win in France?

BTW, I think the answer is "no," because just a couple of years ago people thought the FN was going to capture a lot of regional offices because they made it into the second round, but the partisans of all other parties ganged up to vote for whoever was opposing the FN candidate. So you had the center-left voters voting for the Parti Socialist, and socialists voting for the center left -- anyone but FN.

That just happened two years ago and I don't see how things could have changed so tectonically since then that this pattern would no longer be operative.

Then again, there was just a terrorist attack, and she's kind of the only one making a big deal about it, and the Known Wolf who'd done it had previously gone on anti-cop rampages but was still at large, so who knows.

Oh, and one likely second-round opponent Jean-Luc Melenchon, wants a 100% tax on "the rich" -- so maybe even the center-right will shy away from backing him, if he makes the second round.

See update to this story: Berkeley now says it will provide protection for an Ann Coulter speech, thought it will be delayed a week.

Some groundbreaking work from out academic elites in the exciting new field of pre-natal micro-aggressions:

I recall him writing that only a few weeks after your mother gets pregnant, your father finds out your your mother is pregnant and he starts to yell and he hits your mother, and that will seriously affect YOU, that 6 week old pre-pre-human, unless you get that treatment he (Hubbard) says you absolutely must receive, the expense be darned because it's worth it, ain't it?

I recall he also wrote in that book that he was basically the smartest person what ever lived, so it must be true.

26 All this leftist shit about gender roles and such becomes laughable about ten minutes after you have a kid.

Babies/children don't play with the gender appropriate toys etc. because it's expected of them; they don't give a shit (well, actually they do) what's expected of them. They're either interested in something, or they're not. Period. And good luck interesting them in something that they're not interested in.

The elder of the Guevara spawn was born within a month of the birth of a neighbor's daughter. As soon as our son could walk (sort of) he used to push his stroller and yell "Trucks! BIG trucks!" For my part, I couldn't be less interested in automobiles generally, nor could my wife.

Meanwhile, his distaff Döppelgänger did nothing of the kind, but liked dolls and such.

It's almost as if the sexes have innate differences in their interests.

50 So the vile, criminal, racist piece of human garbage now serving as Dem assembly leader in CA slanders the administration's immigration policies as "white supremacist".

The AG calls this "despicable," but otherwise *defends* the administration policy.

FFFFFS.

One-half sentence, throwaway, reminding all that of course there is nothing racist about rule of law, borders, and immigration tailored to the national interest. Then - 100 megatons of vitriol - and FFS the president should weigh in personally, not via Twitter but in a soundbite - should be poured on DeLeon. Call him and everyone like him what they are - racist, authoritarian scum, harming their constituents and the country.

Perhaps paradoxically, given the state of the electorate, the public agrees with admin. policy - even clear majorities in f***ing CA agree with it. Raise the f***ing profile of this guy, he asked for it, vilify him from every level, make sure his district hears it all.

He openly brags about illegal family members in the US. F***ing prosecute him under various statutes for abetting violation of immigration law.

The GOP in general refuses to engage in politics, beyond the minimal kabuki needed to fool their largely lazy or dim voters. So it's up to the administration to, finally, draw a line, and take a stab at returning sanity to the public square.

Calling the NYT "failing" was half-amusing for about a week. How about actually doing something useful with your soapbox, Donald (and cabinet)?

60 I feel sorry for the children of those gender studies profs. Lord only knows what they'll be subjected to.

My husband and I didn't find out the sex of any of our kids before they were born, even though we certainly could have. I talked to all my babies in utero, and it never occurred to me that I'd be talking to them differently if I knew their sex. Because I wouldn't.

And they play with what they want to play with. When my son was one, we were out of town visiting friends with 4 little girls. My son stood at their toy box and methodically went through every toy in there until he got to the bottom of the box and found a small firetruck that some other boy had left there. That was what he wanted, and he went through a ton of other toys to get there.

This is interesting, and we discussed this a while back on the ONT a few times. They've confirmed that some stone carvings on some pillar they dug up at the mysterious Gobleki Teppi site commemorates an SMOD impact at around 11,000BC.

It was a comet swarm that caused a catastrophe to the planet at the time.

Anyway, that's cool.
Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at April 21, 2017 08:23 PM (aKqWT)

I read that earlier today.

There is some evidence that there was a comet impact around that time, or perhaps multiple impacts of fragments in various places. But they haven't found a smoking gun yet. I think it's a bit of a stretch to say that the carvings had anything to do with the comet. At least it's not obvious to me.

Guy Fieri makes me want to gouge my eyes out with a grapefruit spoon, but I have to give him due credit on two counts:

- I used to give him shit for trying to be all fancy because he was born "Guy Ferry", but it turns out he changed his name back to what it was before his ancestors came through immigration, and I have to respect that.
- His tomato soup recipe is amazing, and I don't even like tomato soup. Put ingredients in a roasting pan, cook at 400 degrees until bored, grind it up in a food mill, splash a little milk or cream. Your house will smell awesome for days.

Pretty stupid for a "deal-maker". The obvious play was to maintain an ambiguously negative posture while relentlessly pursuing the other illegal immigration priorities (thereby reducing the "dreamer" problem along the way) - then, *possibly*, down the road, when you're making major progress, trading some "compassion" idiocy for the racist/lawless element lying down on something else bigger.

You know, actually, I don't think so. I suspect they're just trying to outrage popular opinion, and to undermine society generally by calling everything into question, regardless of how ridiculous their attempts are.

It's of a piece with their interest in mainstreaming mental illness and severely dysfunctional cultures/lifestyles generally.

169 On a darkly humorous note, Cong. Steve King apparently hinted that more lawfare against the "dreamer" lawlessness might be needed, given Trump's pathetic statement.

Not sure about the mechanics of this. Obama's EO was stomped by the court. But Trump can now just adopt the worst tactic of the lawless idiots who have gutted the rule of law in the US: just refuse to enforce the laws. Wonder if he will. Sessions wouldn't be a fan of this, I'm guessing.

Would be nice if Trump suffered something painful over this. Might remind him that actually fulfilling campaign pledges (something he's done more than any other recent president) is a very good idea, and abandoning them is a verrry baaad idea. Politically.

So, D'oh Boy was on a FOB on a sunny, pleasant day, and found a latrine with an actual plastic toilet seat.

He settled in for a relaxing spell, when in the distance there were loud "BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!s" and everyone started running around yelling. He said he pulled out what passed for pathetic toilet paper that actually felt like and resembled crepe paper, and had just adjust his clothing, grabbed his weapon, and began trotting for his vehicle.

Then BOOM! and he was airborne and face-planted on the ground. His bell was rung and he couldn't hear a thing. Medic's lips were moving and there was no sound.

He wasn't "seriously" injured, just has a messed up back he'll be dealing with forever, but his Sgt. pointed, his eyes bugged out, and said, "Look!"

The latrine our son had just left had taken a direct hit from a mortar.

He laughed like it was the funniest thing in the world. My stomach literally flipped over a couple of times.

Illegal immigration is a one-sided issue. Always has been. Both parties being on the wrong side of was a sine qua non for Trump's campaign, and victory.

Do that heavy lifting, win the battles, and the lawless racist (and moral narcissist "compassion" clueless) elements will be happy to take a few crumbs. And the problem will be significantly reduced by then.

well, again, let's go with what he has stated.

seems understandable that someone who has been raised here and does not have any relation to the country their parents broke into our country from would be a compelling case to give some consideration to.

there are probably lot of these people who are adults who do not need to have their parents here so there is no reason to give the parents amnesty.

even then Trump's point is that he is not hunting them down as a priority, does not mean he will not grab them if they are found misbehaving.

stated earlier, my preference is to hunt them down and drive them out of the country, however, no point in screwing our own team.

I have a 2009 Impreza wagon, new to me ca. 2015. Less than 100k miles. I haven't driven it more than a few miles per week in the last few months (medical reasons), and about 2 months ago it wouldn't start, but the portable jumpstarter got it going, so I ran it for about 10 miles just to get it charged. This week, even the portable starter wouldn't get it to turn over; the lights come on but all that happens when I turn the key is I hear a relay or solenoid flutter. I'm assuming the battery's stone dead and will be replacing it as the first and most obvious fix.

- Does that sound reasonable? If it were the alternator or something, I'd expect that it wouldn't start again even after being run 10 miles.
- Within walking distance, there's a NAPA store and a Sears auto shop, so I was planning to just pull the battery, stick it in a backpack, and swap it for a new one. Does anyone recommend one place over the other?
- Is it worth paying more for a battery with a longer warranty? I don't even know if the Sears company itself will outlast a 24 month warranty.
- Is there any reason to spring for the 660A battery over the 540A one or whatever, or should I just save the extra $20? It's just a 4-cylinder boxer, right? Does it take that much power to turn it over?

229 Does that sound reasonable?

236 "Does anyone recommend one place over the other?"

NAPA. But don't buy their least expensive offering. They typically have at least a two-tier and sometimes more lineup. The costlier units will be better.

"Is it worth paying more for a battery with a longer warranty?"

Pro-rated warranties on vehicle batteries are usually crapola. Look for something with a reasonably long full-replacement term.

"Is there any reason to spring for the 660A battery over the 540A one"

I would buy the biggest battery the form factor of the engine compartment would admit. It'll give you more leeway against no-start situations when/if there's a small parasitic drain like a light left on. It'll work itself less hard in a cold start and perforce last somewhat longer.

237 No, politically astute, or astute negotiator, says nothing about this issue.

Nothing is forcing him to take a position, or even to show any body language, on the matter.

Amnesty/illegal immigration are the most important, most politically one-sided issues in the country going on two decades. Trump would not be in the WH if he hadn't dramatically broken with the uniparty jihad on this issue.

Pursue the illegal migration priorities. Go on (rhetorical) offense against the vile race-baiters (incl. in your own "party"). Floor the accelerator, put people on the spot. (watch the "dreamer" situation attrit, naturally, as you do these other things).

Then, down the road - MAYBE - offer some compromise. In return for some very big surrender by the lawless racists.

Not complicated.

Yes, battery is stone dead. Any battery that is of the equivalent CCA or higher will be fine. As far as warranty goes, go with NAPA if that's a concern - Sears may not be around to honor it.

I'd say get the fancy AGM battery, but your car doesn't need it and they are a fair bit more expensive.

Same experience recently with a vehicle I drive maybe once a week. Battery deader than dog food.

My mechanic saw the Bosch battery and guffawed. They're made in Mexico now, and have chicken feathers and burrito wrappers in them. A Russian mechanic coming over saw the Bosch battery and laughed also.

They both recommended Interstate batteries, made in the USA, as having wildly better quality. FWIW.

Beyond the nominal load of whatever a car draws sitting doing nothing for a week, my guess is cold, and the fact that it's probably 8 years old. I have a power controller for the ham radio that only starts it if the voltage goes above 13V (when the car starts) and turns it off 5 minutes after it goes below that (when the car's off), but if it's not transmitting, it shouldn't draw that much, plus I switched it off when I started having trouble turning the engine over.

261 I had three dead tractor batteries, big 4DLTs. I said screw it and bought 3 new ones, all at once. Guess it was a waste since we don't use them that much, but I was getting sick of jumping them off and putting the charger on them all the time when I needed to start them.

And now, I had to cut grass for the first time this year, and the dinky little lawn mower battery was gone, too.

To check if there's a drain, charge it up and see if it makes a little spark when you touch the terminals. Borrow or get a good DC amp clamp to confirm if you want to.

Another good investment, if you've got a lot of batteries is a load tester. You can see how much the voltage drops under load and that will help tell if the battery is going bad.

Disconnect the positive terminal and interpose an ammeter. If you have a parasitic drain, you'll see it with the engine off. A current more than (IIRC) 50 milliamps or so is indicative of a drain.

268 Don, staying quiet on this relatively minor aspect of the larger problem, while vigorously pursuing all the major attacks on the problem, is the obvious call.

The ambiguity comes from not committing to anything in particular, and in this specific case, by just not addressing one's campaign comments.

Tactical ambiguity (with a negative posture, as I noted) on this relatively small part of the mass illegal migration disaster, in the context of winning huge victories (border security, internal enforcement, criminal deportations), does not amount to ambiguity about the rule of law itself. As the battles over enforcement on all the other major components will make clear.

Johnson Controls make a whole bunch of batteries for retailers' private labels. If you buy a battery from Wal-Mart or Sears or Costco, or any of several of the chain auto stores, it probably was OEMed by Johnson Controls.

They also moved auto battery production south to the land of the mordida and the siesta, and quality took a steep nose dive.

We had one of those 4DLT batteries that lasted over 10 years one time. They have these little date "punch holes" on the label, and they're only good for ten years. They have a month punch hole, and then 0 - 9 digits.

Well, I realized that that had "rolled over" because there was no way that battery was just one year old.

That was one that was on the far right tail of the ol' life Gaussian.

Then I had them last less than 2 years. And, over my life, I've had three battery explosions. Catastrophic failure mode. If anyone is that interested, I could 'splain it, but it would take paragraphs.

304 Another good investment, if you've got a lot of batteries is a load tester. You can see how much the voltage drops under load and that will help tell if the battery is going bad.

I've found a trickle charger to be an invaluable asset for batteries that are regularly cycled. That coupled with a load tester is about all the simple maintenance you can do.

The ammeter (and a cheap one will do) will let you find parasitic drains. If the drain is high, start popping out fuses to see if it drops to a reasonable level as you may have a bad contact switch somewhere.
