GAINZZZ Thread

I've been under the weather for a while (allergies and light injuries), but I had some gainzzz. Hit my goal weight of 165. Not sure why as I've been off-regimen in almost all ways.* Eventually that caught up and I regained some fat since then, but hey, hit the goal once and you can do it again.

But just because I haven't been working on GAINZZZ doesn't mean you haven't been.

Any GAINZZZ in health, well-being, or pursuing interests?

* I guess maybe the scale is a lagging indicator of changes that have already occurred. Maybe it takes a week or so for the body to react to positive work.

2 I'm holding steady at 219, so I'm calling it a win. I haven't been able to get on the treadmill this week because of something weird going on with my right leg...it's been sore for days, and it's sometimes painful to walk. Won't get to see the doctor until Monday.

3 Congrats on making weight, Ace. Hope you feel better.

I'm doing ok, GAINZ-wise. Still not getting enough exercise but thanks to IF, still trending down in weight.

Other Gainz, I'm going to writer's workshop next week. Hope to have a salable story out of that.

Double-tap training is coming along. Not making huge progress but getting better at keeping my eyes on the front sight during recoil. I suck at it, but still practicing at it.

7 Got a 5K tomorrow, which I've been running every year (with my mom!)--this'll be year 7, I believe. So that's cool.

Followed up an evening run with a dip in the pool to cool down and then a hot shower, and it may be the key to my recent sleeping issues.

Still gotta build the sauna, though.

19 Oh! And while I've been doing the 5K for a while, last year I had to walk it, because I hadn't gotten back into shape since recovering from my back issues.

I know it's only 5K but I'm happy with that. Every year I think, "I should do the 10K" and then I think, "Eeehhhh. Maybe next year."

So. Next year. Hold me to that.

31 Hit my goal weight of 180 today. 70lbs since Thanksgiving. Medication intake is down 90%. Only a benzo every now and then at night, and to taper off safely without a seizure. Been on them since 2008 when I first got injured.

Throwing around the weights for 2 hours a day and spend 2 hours at our awesome rec/fields. I do sprints. Do body squats. Push-ups. Amd sit-ups while I do my 6 mile walk.

I highly recommend Performix SST just one pill in the morning and stack it with a scope in the morning and one in the afternoon of GNC pre workout AMPed nitric oxide and other stuff booster. Then vitamins at night GNC Men's sport multivitamins.

Eat eggs every day. Will jack up your testosterone.

And sunlight. Get tan. Get that vitamin D going.

When I cut back on carbs I tend to lose weight. It is a pretty clear connection. But I also get intense cravings for...you guessed it....carbs. And that is difficult to manage.

So I have found a manageable midpoint between a pound of pasta and soaking the sauce up with bread, and no carbs. And that has allowed me to maintain a reasonable weight without denying myself of much.

Been stuck at 217 for about a week, but sticking to strict keto so I should get a whoosh in a few days. I think some of it is water retention from getting my butt kicked at the box. Either way, I'm now down from 245 on the 9th of February.

43 Good for you, ace!

I've lost 12 lbs. since mid-March and feel ready to cut back a bit more on carbs and step up the workouts. I've been at 100 total carbs a day for the past 4 weeks, with one day a week as an "off day" and there have been plenty of days when I haven't hit the 100 mark, but 75 total carbs a day will be harder. 50 will be harder still - in fact, I'm not quite sure how to accomplish that. No fruit whatsoever, I guess.

71 I can confirm calories in calories out is...what's the word? Oh yes, bullshit.

So I've never bothered counting calories. I cut the carbs and lose weight. But I decided to do a little test. I stayed low carb, but also calorie restricted to 1200/day. And yes, I did lose weight quickly. 10 lbs in a month. So, since that's basically my goal weight, I decided to experiment a bit.

I added carbs back in but kept the calories at 1200.

And I gained 3 lbs. Not a fluke either. It sustained over 4 days until I decided that the situation was ridiculous and cut carbs again.

And then the three pounds disappeared.

Small sample. Small "gainzzzz" but yeah, in my body at least, a calorie is not a calorie.

78 Fenelon--

Over the years, it has morphed into more of a moviegoing diary. My son (The Boy) has been going with me for 10 years now, and my middle daughter (The Flower) has been pretty regular for the last year-and-a-half, since we picked up the pace on the classics.

So, sometimes I digress, thinking they may read this when I'm dead. Like, when I reviewed "Silver Skies" the director read the review and pronounced it odd and when I read it, I realized how much I'd gotten into my own set of tropes about how we (me and my family) view movies.

But every now and again, I write a review that someone else can read and understand.

81 Hey, a gainz thread I'm not 400 comments late to! I got back in my pre-pregnancy clothes a couple months ago (baby turns 1 next month). Have been refreshing my German and learning Welsh with Duolingo. Trying to learn piano (not going so hot as I have minimal musical ability, but I enjoy it and so do the kids). Doing a one-year Bible reading plan. Also writing a serial microfiction story about a woman who owns a company that builds lairs for supervillains (link to the blog is in my nick). I'm having a lot of fun with that.

85 Tennis pour moi.

Half and half. I play twice a week using junior green dot balls on a junior sized court. 60 feet versus 78 feet. The balls have about 75 percent the speed and bounce so it shortens the game and makes it a little slower.

Then twice a week on a full sized court with standard balls.

I bike over to play, so there's that. Not very far, though.

91 So a question:

I don't eat after dinner. But first thing in the morning (12-13 hours after dinner), I need to eat.

I will fall over if I don't. And it needs to be protein. Meat, usually.

Monday I walked for 1.5 miles about 40 minutes after eating.

I could barely move the rest of the day. The walk was no more than I'd been doing, the temp was lower, I'd had plenty of water.

My theory is that my body hadn't gotten what it needed from my breakfast yet and so used up reserves of...something.

Baloney? Or possibly true, based on what y'all know or have experienced?

A couple weeks ago, All Hail Eris linked the Unfuck Your Habitat website: http://unfuckyourhabitat.tumblr.com/

I've been reading that, and set a goal of cleaning one thing every day. It could be cleaning one countertop or cabinet, vacuuming one floor, cleaning one toilet, and so on. (Of course, cleaning a countertop or cabinet means cleaning everything on or in it as well.)

While I haven't quite stuck to that goal every single day, my main bathroom is cleaner than it's been in a long time and I'm starting to be able to make out a living room under all that dust and cat hair.

The problem with cross fit is the trainers get certified in a weekend. I have zero problem with it. It's intense and the people that compete on a high level are beasts.

It's going to be expensive. You have so much maintainance on your body, that you need trainers, sports massage, and athletic doctors. Not to mention the insane amount of supplements and large amounts of food you must take it as well.

And no pain is not weakness leaving the body. That saying is fucking dangerous slogan to have. That bullshit about cost me an arm for ignoring pain for over a year.

Pros: Charlie Hunnam as Percy Fawcett, beautiful cinematography, clever use of the lush Daphnis and Chloe to evoke the teeming jungle.

Cons: Weirdly modern sensibility.

I've given up Splenda too, because I was putting 2 packs in a cup of coffee and I suspected that certainly was not helping me tame my sweet tooth. I confess I got Stevia, but that stuff sucks. It's got a weird aftertaste.

On Easter, I had a slice of cheesecake at my sister's house and enjoyed it, but man, I felt sick afterward.

Yeah, that's what I mean though. If you get drained after a few miles walk in the morning, a couple of saltines with cottage cheese the night before might sort it out. If it's a real nutrient deficiency, you usually end up with bizarre cravings - not like "gosh, I really want a pizza now", but "I will literally murder someone if I don't get a jar of kalamata olives and some blue cheese". Somehow, we know what has the nutrients we need. If it's just low energy, I'd say it's just insufficient fuel.

157 Congrats Ace on hitting your goal weight. It may be that you're metabolically fat-adapted now and as a result you have more leeway to be unGAINNNZZy without snapping back into your former status; carbs may not be as damaging to you now as before (if that was ever really the case for you). I've noticed something like that in my own situation. I find I can loosen up my restrictions and seemingly not suffer the consequences like before I got my act together. I'm afraid it's going to set up perverse incentives for me, though, unless I keep my head on straight.

I think from HIIT, with the military aspect thrown in by Greg Glassman (I may have e his name wrong). There will be some Pavel Tsatsouline influence, too. It didn't start out being quite so crazy, though. If you know what you're doing, and many people and trainers do, Crossfit can be done a little differently and be very good.

that's what I thought too but when I stopped eating plants suddenly the pains I didn't even realize I'd been having in my gut vanished. I'd just been so used to getting "mild discomfort" of one sort or another after eating but when it stopped I was like wow, I feel free.

I may have had some kind of IBS without knowing it.

Walk was great. It was the rest of the day that was tough.

The only thing that seemed different about the walk was the timing. First morning one I'd done.

And considering how hot it will get soon, I need to walk in the mornings!

Maybe just wait an hour or more after eating.

Or could have been random. I will continue to work out and see what happens!

The vegetable thing is interesting because for years, I'd get the intestinal pains which I would attribute (in the Protestant) style to my sinful soda consumption. They went away somehow (regardless of my soda consumption) and I didn't give much thought to it, until they came back years later.

You jsut have to find the right box. At mine, it's a mandatory month of fundamentals class, twice a week. Nothing more than 45lbs. They want to ensure that you have form down first. They stress being careful not to injure yourself. They all also stress scaling to do what you can do, not to walk in and start trying to qualify for the games.

208 So we signed up for a year of yoga- hot yoga. This week we only went once, (too many commitments we had to keep), but the past few weeks we've been going at least twice.

It's tough. A few years ago I did yoga enough that I tried two power vinyasa classes in one day to see if I could do it. (I did, not recommended, I was wiped for days!) This place is a little hotter, not as humid, and I'm doing Hatha to start. I was born with flat feet and have enough injuries that I want to ease in before I get crazy.

Down a pound, up a pound, but I think some of it could be muscle. I'm starting to get some indentations back again, and my jeans feel better and stamina is better. Doing a bunch of garden work tomorrow and then hopefully back to twice a week yoga next week and IF one day.

I feel better and clothes fit better, so fuck the scale.

Going to make home made pizza tonight though, which we haven't had in weeks, so I don't expect tomorrow to be brill, Gainzzwise. If I think of it I'll send a pic for the food thread.

Hope you feel better, Head Ewok, and grats to all the Gainzzz winners!

209 MamaAJ--

With a nod toward "I have no idea what I'm talking about":

If you were stiff/sore/old-feeling, I would look for inflammation. If this was mild exercise for you, and a normal breakfast (for you) but an unusual after-effect, I would consider--and this is the whole "ignorant Internet dude" coming to the fore here--an "allergic" reaction. Spring, and all that. (I have some experience with that, and it surprised the heck out of me..)

If you just had zero energy, I would suspect insulin issues.

This is the thing about gaining wait on low-calorie diets: You're eating less, how can you gain weight? Because your body doesn't burn as many calories. Well, how does that manifest? You're tired. Your body tells you to lay down, you can't do that, maybe eat some Doritos.

I highly doubt that you need to eat more/more frequently, but if it were me, and it happened more than once, I'd consider seeing a doctor.

After moving to the first very warm place years ago, I had to get better about vitamins. And Delicious Greens. And Emergen-C. But I'm much better about veggies now.

And I know I need protein.

It's just I had checked all the boxes and it still happened...
