Thomas Gainsborough definitely improved as he got older. Look at some of his portraits done in his 20s. The models have wooden expressions and posture, typical for the time but not very attractive. Today's example shows his mature technique: the lighter colors, the flattering skin tones, the relaxed, graceful posture, the sheen of the satin cloth and the delicacy of the lace.
He takes a moderately attractive woman and imbues her with grace and style. No wonder he was so successful and popular. And yes, this is art. Even without trees. Posted by: JTB at April 26, 2017 09:46 AM (V+03K) 64

Quote of the Day from the Texas Monthly (I'm on their e-mail list) repeated exactly as they sent it:
"The juvenile was accused of urinating in a drinking cup that belonged to one of the teachers and she didn't find out about it until after the fact. She thinks she (ingested) it but she doesn't know 100% because, according to her statement she made the comment that the water fountain always tastes funny." - Moody Police Chief Roger Kennedy to the Waco Tribune Herald. A sixteen-year-old Moody High School student was detained on Monday and faces three felony charges for allegedly peeing in a teachers drinking cup earlier this month. Also, Moody High School might want to get that water fountain checked out. Posted by: Tom Servo at April 26, 2017 10:16 AM (V2Yro) 180

The Volstead Amendment (alcohol prohibition) was rapidly repealed in 1932 when the States, rapidly going broke due to the spreading depression, realized how much revenue they were losing due to the ban, and how much revenue they could raise by lifting it.
MJ prohibition will end for the same reason. It has nothing to do with morality, or safety, and everything to do with coming up with ways to keep feeding Leviathan. Posted by: Tom Servo at April 26, 2017 10:24 AM (V2Yro) 235

MaryJo is bad, especially on the young brain, and young character (youth should get the natural high ... like sports or reading?). Lot of truth there. I only have anecdotal things, but when I was in school it was very clear who the pot smokers were. Lazy, apathetic, rarely seen, and if you did see them added no real value to the classes. Most of the time they'd hang out on Stoner's Corner across the street from the school. The YAF is getting a lot of net condemnation for pulling out, but I think their legal counsel told them they had to. With an anticipation of violence on Thursday night, they were getting set up to be held liable for damages for anyone who was injured, on a "reasonable person would have known" standard.
Even if they eventually won, their enemies would have been able to tie them up in court for years and cost them hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees. They had to pull out of official sponsorship, they had no choice. Posted by: Tom Servo at April 26, 2017 10:32 AM (V2Yro) 282

Weed is not benign; its peculiar nastiness is that it doesn't make a big mess of you so much as it simply slows you down until you won't do anything useful. It makes you a lump rather than a train wreck.
Neither is it worth all the enforcement effort we put into it. It should be as tightly regulated as booze, and no more tightly. The expression of the trees is a bit muted, as though they are in mourning, or perhaps angry, at the camelia in bud, ripped untimely from its proper place, by the metazoan in the middle. This is a deep and moving portrait: a meditation on the anguish of the Ericalea and the vicissitudes of fate.
It could be improved by maybe a cabin on the left. Cabins are always nice. Posted by: Alcoholic Asshole Shut In at April 26, 2017 10:34 AM (CPk08) 293
Woman, ex Army I think and boyfriend tied her rescue pitbull to a tree and shot it five times, then buried it. Filmed it all, laughing while they did it. I am sitting here sobbing at my desk.
Were they my neighbors, I would be sorely tempted to get a few husky folk together and beat the two to the edge of their lives, while recording it for YouTube. Go ahead, jury. Convict me. Especially since the outright murder of millions of children each year produces nothing but yawns, but people go apeshit if you so much as touch a dog.
(I note for the record that in some jurisdictions it's far easier to get weed than booze.) Posted by: joncelli, Longbow Afficianado and Phalangist at April 26, 2017 10:33 AM (RD7QR) Ok, let's make it legal throughout the land, and let it be up to the states if they want to make it legal in their individual jurisdictions. Like states and communities used to have no Sunday alcohol sales, no sales on holidays, no sales after a certain period of time or dry counties. Tax the crap out of it and designate the money goes toward, umm schools, or pot prevention programs. And please, please, spend millions of dollars on no smoking and smoking cessation programs. Allow insurance companies, employers, etc. to penalize you if you smoke pot. The same crying leftists and politicians who want to legalize this and glorify it are the same ones who are pretending to be horrified at the epidemic of heroin and meth usage and overdosing in the country. But by all means, let's legalize it and glorify it. Posted by: Jen at April 26, 2017 10:44 AM (YZ5sm) 356

Posted by: Boulder terlit hobo at April 26, 2017 10:40 AM (JKpVF) Sorry, you'll have to walk me through this one...or maybe Ben Rothlesberger is lurking ATM? That's fringe enough for me. Newsletter, please. Posted by: General Zod at April 26, 2017 10:37 AM (Bdeb0) Ha. To stop being coy, there are still Indonesians alive who practiced cannibalism in the not very distant past. The three degrees of separation is from someone in Papua, used to be Irian Jaya, whose tribe practiced cannibalism. My wife knows a former missionary kid whose family ministered to the tribe. He's the one who asked how we taste. I have another connection that's actually only two degrees of separation. In the early 2000's the government forced migration of Madurese to the the Dayak region of Borneo (Kalimantan). Results were mixed, and in the resulting bloodshed the Dayaks reverted to cannibalism. I have a friend who was at a conference where Dayak pastors (!) were repenting of having fallen back into the practice. Yow. Dad's cousin is also a medical missionary in the same Dayak region. He actually went to the market and confiscated human parts that were being sold there and gave them a proper burial. Posted by: TexasDan at April 26, 2017 10:52 AM (yL25O) 407

271,
"And while it's still not clear if there is a second hand smoke danger from tobacco, there's no question that alcohol has an observable effect. But never mentioned." The "second hand smoke" danger from tobacco, and from pot, come in conjunction with the presence of radon in the air with the second hand smoke. Radon normally would be breathed in and out but it can get attached to the sticky tar particles in second hand smoke and then when they are breathed in they stick to the lungs and when radon breaks down its radiation, which has to be in intimate contact with tissue to be a problem, is close to cells and can cause mutations which can lead to cancer. It's the combo which is a danger and that happens only in closed spaces where there is a source of radon that collects in that space and a source of tar particles. Somebody told me one time that if I thought health care was expensive now, I would really hate it when it was "free".
The same rule of thumb applies to marijuana. Right now it's untaxed and they have to obtain a warrant to bust in your door to catch you smoking it. When it's legal, your name will have to be recorded (like cold medicines) when you buy it, it will be taxed so hard it will be more expensive, they will devise tests so that they can bust your ass driving after smoking where they incarcerate you, fire you from your job and fine the hell out of you for DWS, you will only be able get it from government approved corporations and they will make it into a regulatory nightmare. Be careful what you wish for, you might get it. Posted by: Malcolm Tent at April 26, 2017 11:04 AM (gtQ/3) 511
Here is a fact for Senator Schumer - which is not subject to debate: The founders put the second amendment into the Constitution so that if the government ever became dictatorial that the people of the United States would have the means to overthrow it. Read the minutes to the Constitutional convention - that is exactly what they intended.
We don't have a right to keep and bear arms to protect us from criminals, we don't have a right to keep and bear arms for purposes of hunting; we have a right to keep and bear arms to protect us from people like you, Senator Schumer. >>The three degrees of separation is from someone in Papua, used to be
Irian Jaya, whose tribe practiced cannibalism. My wife knows a former missionary kid whose family ministered to the tribe. He's the one who asked how we taste. OK, so serious question. How sacramental is the cannibalism, if at all? Is it just a cultural commonplace, or is it reverential? If it's part of a ceremony, I assume the practitioners are kind of, well, for lack of a better term, sampling, rather than digging in with a kind of Falstaffian gluttony? 448 355 Weed is not benign; its peculiar nastiness is that it doesn't make a big
mess of you so much as it simply slows you down until you won't do anything useful. It makes you a lump rather than a train wreck. /// OTOH, not everyone is affected like that. When prohibition was repealed the amendment language left it entirely up to the individual States on how they wanted to regulate it.
Here in SC it was put to the public during a special election vote. The voters overwhelmingly legalized booze. This is the only time they put a vote to the public like that and they did because they knew the legislature was still controlled by the prohibitionists who would have shot it down. It's never mentioned but some good did arise out of the period of prohibition. The significant ones to me was drinking on the job was no longer considered normal or allowed after the repeal and the cases of cirrhosis of the liver decreased dramatically .
Posted by: Jack Sock at April 26, 2017 11:15 AM (m/vQu) There's a reason that the temperance movement rose when it did. The industrial revolution caused massive changes to society and suddenly minor nuisances became serious social problems. When you have a society of small agricultural communities, the town drunk is a minor problem that the community can deal with. When you have a city of hundreds of thousands of people and easy access to lots of alcohol day or night, the negative effects feed on each other. The early movement didn't want to ban alcohol, just end the problem of drunkards abandoning their families, getting themselves killed in an accident, or working themselves to death. Not to mention the problem of conflicts, prostitution, etc enhanced by access to large amounts of alcohol. Posted by: Colorado Alex In Exile at April 26, 2017 11:26 AM (Tnhbr) 687

States are getting wise to that. In PA, the price of my 1 lb. bag of "pipe tobacco" just went from $16 to $27.
Posted by: rickl at April 26, 2017 11:22 AM (xjiRE) That's why I said 'for now.' I figure VA will follow suit soon enough. Then my $11 bags will double in price. regard to how a constitutional amendment got passed against the will of the people. Posted by: Jack Sock at April 26, 2017 11:25 AM (m/vQu) The federal congress voted it in and the individual State legislatures approved it. This is why when the repeal was voted on they sent it directly to the voters and not the legislatures. It is the only one that has even been done that way. The YAF is getting a lot of net condemnation for
pulling out, but I think their legal counsel told them they had to. Posted by: Tom Servo at April 26, 2017 10:32 AM (V2Yro) They had a choice.
